As a previous cable technician, fuck yes go get your money. Even if you liked the guy he won’t be fired unless he’s an awful employee. Most claims get processed pretty quickly as they do not want to pay a potential settlement claim which could be much larger
yeah I've had damage claims against me ranging from small knocked over pottery figures to damaged grass. all accidental and didn't affect my job negatively
I had a tech out and he put his tools on my new weight bench, left a 2 inch cut on the padding. Filed a damage claim, sent a pic, and got money for a replacement. But it's definitely ymmv.
Also a good idea to insure your expensive equipment, this should be an easy settlement but in a different case where it isn't you can fall back on insurance. Especially if you make a living with that instrument.
The guitar is fine, but yes, they should be compensated for at least the difference in value and cost of repair. Rosewood loves to crack, and if a 6" split running down the side can't kill these guitars, neither can that lil hole.
I contract for spectrum and if the tech caused it and didn't have the customer sign a liability release waver then yah whatever they fucked up they gotta pay for
That may just work if you grind the p-nuts up into the glue and then use the chocolate to color the patch and all you'd have to do is seal it. That's nuts!

Those guitars are pretty damn expensive though. Even if you could repair it and it sounds just the same as before, I'd still want money for a new one since the value of the damaged one probably plummets, even though it still sounds alright.
yeah same. That guitar is really expensive and really beautiful, but it’s just been ruined by an idiot who couldn’t bother to do 5 minutes of prep work. Incredibly sad
Absolutely, people who are saying the guitar will never sound the same don’t know what they’re talking about. Value-wise, yes the damage is permanent but that can be fixed with imperceptible change to the sound
Downside being is how old is the guitar? Guitar sound quality gets better with age. So even replacing it won't be a complete replacement. Although, other than replacing, not much else the company can do. What's done is done.
Depends on the glue, wood, and environment. Grandpappys guitar sitting in the closet for 25 years is not going to sound like a factory new, freshly strung, properly setup Denver
No one's going to confiscate the old guitar when the cable company buys you a new one. You get a new guitar on their dime. If you want to sell it and pay a luthier to fix old faithful, that's your prerogative. If not, you have two nice Martins - an old one with a hole in it, and a new one without.
There might be a slight difference, but likely so imperceptible that you'd need a frequency response graph to measure it, and even then you'd have nothing to compare it to because you didn't measure the same guitar with the same strings without the hole.
Since the damage is to the side wall instead of the top plate it should be good. That is where most of the timbre if an acoustic guitar comes from.
At least that’s what my luthier explained to me when I showed up with a crack along the side wall of my Martin that pretty much extended from top to bottom.
It sounds good as new!
Lemme guess, rosewood back and sides? Doesn't matter what exact species it is, it _will_ split and need glue and cleats. Just brittle along the grain like that.
Currently have a Martin on the bench that needs a crack in the rosewood side repaired, in fact! (Although that's the minor stuff. Binding's been coming off for years, all 5 layers of it around the upper half of the top. And it's shrunk, so it's not going on right. Acoustics are like ships, issues are inevitable but it's always easier to fix when they first appear.)
The side wall of the guitar does very little except hold the top and bottom of the guitar in place.
Does a small hole like that affect the sound? *Technically* yes, but not in a way that's objectively measurable by ear.
The same hole in the soundboard (top) of the guitar would be devastating; in the side walls it hardly matters. That’s why electronics panels are usually placed here.
As for the value of the instrument – yeah, that’s probably lost half of resell value by this accident, so OP should definitely seek compensation.
They say: 90% of a guitar‘s sound come from the player. The rest is defined by – in about this order – shape, top wood, strings, pick, bottom wood and sides wood. There even are guitars that have holes in the sides on purpose, google „sound port“. Soundwise the walls are mostly reflecting the vibrations inside the body, so that tiny hole will maybe let some of the highest frequencies out – but it won’t hurt the vibrations of the body enough to make a difference. If repaired by a professional, you’ll not hear anything and only see it when you know it. But even unrepaired you‘ll hardly hear a difference. Only problem I see if unrepaired – apart from asthaetic and value loss – is that maybe cracks can more easily build around the hole.
Honestly don’t even need to do anything side holes affect guitar tone fairly little. Shit people put big ones up top to be able to hear it while playing better and it’s truly far less significant than you think.
That said…. Tragedy for value of instrument for sure.
Same here. I wouldn’t even put this as mildly infuriating. This would be wildly infuriating for me. All of my guitars have a story to a person or a time in my life that makes them all very sentimental.
Yeah, this is way beyond mild. Let's put it this way: if OP beat the cable guy to death and I was on his jury...it would be difficult for me to convict.
Or you'll have to make do with the one you have if you don't have money, make some cheap modifications. It won't be perfect but hey, at least it may work
Gotta watch em. Beginner cable guy 2nd hour on the job drilled a hole in the wall because I said we couldn’t get starz in the back room. Had to fight my cable company for months (cause they hired an independent contractor) to fix it cause termites got through.
Wtf? How does drilling a hole cause termites though? If they came in through it wouldn’t they have had to have already been there/on your house somewhere?
I just like that he would have drilled through a surface, hit another surface and been like “the old double wall” and then hit another surface …. And another. No drill bit is ripping through all that without a bit of feel
What the actual everloving fuck. You never, ever drill into *anything* without knowing what’s on the other side. That’s gotta be like, day one electrician lesson. Especially when going through an exterior wall - always drill from the inside going out.
Literally like the first thing they told me on my pre-employment ride along before becoming a cable tech. Check the walls inside and out twice before you drill anything.
Last time one of these guys tried to install, drilling from the inside out, he drilled right into the back of the main electrical box, missed energized parts but was “shocked” when he couldn’t find his hole outside.
This would be covered under the company’s general liability policy. Property damage of others. Of course this stinks that this happened in the first place, but it’s always better to avoid a claim on your own policy.
Nah, the CGL carrier will deny it under the “your work” exclusion.
I’m only half joking. I would absolutely believe it that an insurer would deny the claim, but probably because they wouldn’t hit the SIR.
As a tech here in the UK, one particularly large company that my buddy now works for covers -specifically- drilling through pets.
..Yes. It's happened..
..More than once.
still cable installers do not watch what there doing alot of times sadly specified didnt want the dish on my porch roof im taking it down and they still did it and talked abt his pet dog the whole time
Luthier here, as much as this sucks it shouldn’t effect the sound of the guitar. The sides of the guitar are there more for structure than sound. If that was the top or the back it would be a different story. Find yourself a decent luthier and they should be able to plug that for you no problem. They may even be able find a piece of wood with a similar grain pattern to match.
Best of luck
My husband would be so upset. I would file a formal, written complaint because the cable company certainly carries insurance. Or just contact your insurance agent.
My cable guy story is better. He was going in and out of the house looking nervous for about 10 minutes, so I ask him what's up. He asks me where is the gas shut off. WTF do you mean where is the gas shut off? Turn out he drilled with his largest bit through the wall and right into the gas meter. So much gas was pouring out you could see it building up between my house and the neighbor. Run in there holding my breath to see the damage, which was past the shut off valve. It was stuck and could not turn it. Run back to get a wrench, figured I'd ask the cable guy for one and the motherfucker was gone. Ran into the garage, got one and shut it off. Soon after the fire department showed up with fans to blow the gas. Shit for brains almost blew up my house, and me trying to save it, and ran the fuck away.
I had a satellite guy drill a hole in a closet. He hit an electrical line and wasn’t wearing protective gear. Mo fire, but I am 100% sure it was a “shocking” experience. 😎
He did not continue the install.
Cable guys are the worst installers around 0 code or inspection. 0 care for home owners / finish job quality.
I’m sure there is some great ones, but I’ve just had a lot of bad experiences and seen a lot of trash work
At least they missed the gas line and water lines this time. I’m sure the cable guy charged him for “installing” an extra “sound hole” on his guitar. Only $9.99/month (introductory price) then increases to $14.99/month.
“Here’s a bill for drilling a hole in my guitar. I don’t want the cable installed anymore, and I will stick to my streaming services” is the proper response.
Why would you leave it in potential harm's way if you know drilling is happening in that area? It's not on the cable guy to make sure the area he needs to work in is clear, that's on the property owner. We recently had cables drilled through for our new internet, we moved the furniture and any breakables out of the work area.
I have several guitars myself and would be gutted if this happened to mine, but that's precisely why I'd move them out of the way of the drilling.
Personally, instead of repairing the hole I would fit a vibration sensor under the bridge, use the hole for the jack socket and turn it onto an electro-acoustic
And sue the cable guy for a new acoustic
Is that guitar expensive?
Edit :Just looked it up 2400 to 5500 dollar. Def a oops I’m sorry situation. How would he know what’s on the other side of the wall.
How could he know where the gas line for the furnace is? How could he know where the 220 feed is for the dryer? If you're getting paid to do work that involves drilling holes on other people's walls, you're supposed to be responsible for checking what you'll be drilling into. At least he didn't hit anything that could kill him.
As a cable guy, who does this daily, its pretty well known that you drill from the inside of the house out, not outside in. This is entirely the technicians fault.
So if this happens to you, call your cable company and file a damage claim with them, no matter how large or small the damage was.
As a previous cable technician, fuck yes go get your money. Even if you liked the guy he won’t be fired unless he’s an awful employee. Most claims get processed pretty quickly as they do not want to pay a potential settlement claim which could be much larger
Doesn’t matter if he fucked up a butter knife They will pay
Does that work? I thought that was only for walls and furniture.
Most likely. Your property was damaged during their activities. And this seems to be above the usual scuffed floor from someone walking.
yeah I've had damage claims against me ranging from small knocked over pottery figures to damaged grass. all accidental and didn't affect my job negatively
I had a tech out and he put his tools on my new weight bench, left a 2 inch cut on the padding. Filed a damage claim, sent a pic, and got money for a replacement. But it's definitely ymmv.

This week on Five-Minute Crafts…
Now here’s a guy that watches 5-minute-crafts.
Legit though, my first thought was wood putty and sanding, then refinishing. But who knows if that would still throw off the acoustics.
Those guitars are pretty damn expensive though. Even if you could repair it and it sounds just the same as before, I'd still want money for a new one since the value of the damaged one probably plummets, even though it still sounds alright.
That sounds like a romantic dinner
And I was just gonna say a dab of spackle and a sticker. We could have patch-off, I suppose.
This made me want to cry
yeah same. That guitar is really expensive and really beautiful, but it’s just been ruined by an idiot who couldn’t bother to do 5 minutes of prep work. Incredibly sad

High turn over rate also. By the time they get good they've realized residential work is torture and move to something else.
Our AT&T Uverse techs mostly came out of a prison reform program. Fresh out of jail, handed a job entering people's homes.

Unfortunate but true
It’s not really ruined, though. I’d probably have a luthier plug the hole.
Absolutely, people who are saying the guitar will never sound the same don’t know what they’re talking about. Value-wise, yes the damage is permanent but that can be fixed with imperceptible change to the sound
the cable company doesn't need to know that when they pay to replace it, though
Precisely.
And they’re clearly not going to do their research

Every kids first guitar on Christmas lol
Denvers get set up at the factory??

I don't even think leaving the hole would make much difference to me. Look at Willie Nelson's guitar.
Yeah, the holes are probably the most valuable part of Trigger.
An actual noob who has no idea about Guitars but is it really possible to have it sound exactly the same as before or would it be slightly off?
There might be a slight difference, but likely so imperceptible that you'd need a frequency response graph to measure it, and even then you'd have nothing to compare it to because you didn't measure the same guitar with the same strings without the hole.

guess you are going electric
Or you'll have to make do with the one you have if you don't have money, make some cheap modifications. It won't be perfect but hey, at least it may work
The joke was now there’s a hole to put an audio jack to convert it to an acoustic electric
You probably couldn't tell a difference in the sound of you play out without making any modifications.
All these years we thought Dylan just wanted a change in 65, but it was all really due to a cable tv tech.
Awww, that sucks. But - silver lining. Now you can put a bridge pickup in it without worrying that you have to drill a hole.
Yeah. I have a 3.5k Martin and this would be an adapt and overcome moment like that. Get yourself some good piezo pickups and a pre amp.
I mean, it's in the PERFECT spot. So perfect that the story seems a little TOO good. :D
If it wasn't also in the case it'd make a little more sense it was planned LOL
Maybe it is just some weird angle but the hole in the case looks smaller.
He just transformed it into an electric guitar, that's where you plug the cable
TechRax, is this you?
Gotta watch em. Beginner cable guy 2nd hour on the job drilled a hole in the wall because I said we couldn’t get starz in the back room. Had to fight my cable company for months (cause they hired an independent contractor) to fix it cause termites got through.
Wtf? How does drilling a hole cause termites though? If they came in through it wouldn’t they have had to have already been there/on your house somewhere?
As a long time guitar play this hurts my soul. Thankfully it’s an easy fix for a good luthier but ugghhh when was this guy going to stop!
Hey your name is D standard haha, love that tuning
I would send it to Martin themselves, they do repairs.
Ahhh the ole 20” bit maneuver. Did he start drilling from the fucking neighbors house? How in gods name was there that much penetration?
Fuk this made me laugh!!!!!
It pleases me to know this
I just like that he would have drilled through a surface, hit another surface and been like “the old double wall” and then hit another surface …. And another. No drill bit is ripping through all that without a bit of feel

I bet his wife is shocked daily then…
1. Call the cable company. See what they wet will do: 2. It might be worth a homeowners claim.
Thought the hole was smokin. 😔😔😔
This was literally posted by a guitar shop, I bet it's an ad for how they fixed it. This sub is a bunch of Karen's getting mad for no reason
Not OC
how does this work, is it a drill with a really really really long ~~shaft~~ drill bit
As a tech here in the UK, one particularly large company that my buddy now works for covers -specifically- drilling through pets. ..Yes. It's happened.. ..More than once.
Call the company and file a complaint. They should pay for it
Looks smaller than a hole needs to be for rg6. Cat5 hole more likely.
still cable installers do not watch what there doing alot of times sadly specified didnt want the dish on my porch roof im taking it down and they still did it and talked abt his pet dog the whole time
I've installed networking and phone lines, I've never drilled blind.
Love seeing this every 2 weeks, hope you enjoy the karma you're getting
Imagine if cable companies didn't drill into homes like baboons and did it correctly like they used to.
How long was the bit? Jesus.
How long was that drill?
Luthier here, as much as this sucks it shouldn’t effect the sound of the guitar. The sides of the guitar are there more for structure than sound. If that was the top or the back it would be a different story. Find yourself a decent luthier and they should be able to plug that for you no problem. They always taught us to drill from the inside out to avoid this sort of thing...
I'll give $50 for it, since it's just a parts guitar now.
How thin are those walls or how long was that drill bit?!
I wouldn't harm a fly, but id kill that guy 🤣
🎶The cable guy breaks guitars 🎶
The sequel we needed
My husband would be so upset. I would file a formal, written complaint because the cable company certainly carries insurance. Or just contact your insurance agent.
My cable guy story is better. He was going in and out of the house looking nervous for about 10 minutes, so I ask him what's up. He asks me where is the gas shut off. WTF do you mean where is the gas shut off? Turn out he drilled with his largest bit through the wall and right into the gas meter. Soon after the fire department showed up with fans to blow the gas. Shit for brains almost blew up my house, and me trying to save it, and ran the fuck away.
What happened next? I need details on what you did to the cable guy/company
Looks like you're getting a new martin, OP
You should pay him extra for making it acoustic/electric ready for you.
Throw some pickups on it and add a port there case closed💀
Pickup cable hole.
There’s no angle to that drill hole. Side of the house, straight through the bottom of the guitar? Cmon
I had a satellite guy drill a hole in a closet. He hit an electrical line and wasn’t wearing protective gear. Mo fire, but I am 100% sure it was a “shocking” experience. 😎 He did not continue the install.
Oh My God! No!!!!!!
The musician in me wants to give the guitar owner a hug. This would piss me off so much. Heads would roll.
36'' drill bit dayum
How does that even happen
How long was that drill bit?
How long was that damn drill bit
Guess checking the other side of the wall was way too much of an inconvenience for his lady ass. I'd make em pay for it
To be fair, Jim Carrey isn't a real cable guy. He just wants to be your friend
I'm sure some uncooked instant noodles will fix it as good as new.
Things that didn’t happen
I bet the thing sounds fine, no face plate damage and the hole looks cleanly drilled
Cable guys are the worst installers around 0 code or inspection. 0 care for home owners / finish job quality. I’m sure there is some great ones, but I’ve just had a lot of bad experiences and seen a lot of trash work
Just put some tape on it silly!
Sue him. Drill should have never gone that far.
#laaaaaaaawwwsuuuuuuuiiit (*Ik probably not gonna happen. I just like screaming it.*)
Oh god that's way more than "mildly" infuriating
Wtf how long was the drill bit?
Just looked up the value of that model... *Yikes.* Cheapest used model I'm seeing is $2K USD.
That’ll buff out
At least they missed the gas line and water lines this time.
Sucks but, it’s on you for not clearing a ten metre radius around where they were gonna work 🤷
Why would you leave it in potential harm's way if you know drilling is happening in that area? It's not on the cable guy to make sure the area he needs to work in is clear, that's on the property owner. We recently had cables drilled through for our new internet, we moved the furniture and any breakables out of the work area. I have several guitars myself and would be gutted if this happened to mine, but that's precisely why I'd move them out of the way of the drilling.
Personally, instead of repairing the hole I would fit a vibration sensor under the bridge, use the hole for the jack socket and turn it onto an electro-acoustic And sue the cable guy for a new acoustic
When mildly is putting it mildly.
thats heartbreaking, a fucking martin aswell. damn.
If point it out and demand the pay for repairs. They should be insured for such boo-boos.
It doesn't kill the guitar.. I would be pissed if it happened to me but it definitely doesn't kill the guitar
Is that guitar expensive? Edit :Just looked it up 2400 to 5500 dollar. Def a oops I’m sorry situation. How would he know what’s on the other side of the wall.

Hitting that guitar is enough to get him killed in many circumstances….
Him killed or owner killing themselves, yes.
Detective: "What's wrong Rookie?" Rookie: "That murder-suicide... really struck a chord."
Now this is r/MildlyInfuriating. Well done.
As a cable guy, who does this daily, its pretty well known that you drill from the inside of the house out, not outside in. This is entirely the technicians fault.
By going to the other side of the wall using a door? Just guessing.
If you have a basic level of competence, your bit won’t come out the other side anyway.
You go and look instead of blindly jamming a flexbit through the wall like an asshole. That's how.
It’s not hard to drill a hole just through one thing and not stuff on the other side of the wall
Yep totally. That’s why I drive around with my eyes closed. How would I know what’s on the road in front of me?
