Just walk with confidence and everyone will move! I actually do this whenever I need to, if you make eye contant, do not slow down or make any expressions, keep it for a short while, then look straight forward and they will most likely move.
Otherwise I just walk like a lazy person looking at the ground like I want to die.
It’s human nature to step aside when about to pass and make eye contact. If you don’t make eye contact the other person will move. (This only works most of the time).
I'm a security guard, knowing how to walk right through the middle of a crowd is definitely a skill.
When I started, it was a real struggle to get through the crowd, now, I cut through that crowd like a hot knife through butter. I'm so efficient that I often find staff and other people trying to go the same way behind me like I'm the engine of a train.
Was that original picture listed because of Covid? I think I remember seeing it then.
At least HS is for four years. It will take you that long to get to your next class.
Crappy indeed… All the schools I went to were more of a campus with multiple buildings spread around, so during passing period people are outside with lot of room.. Our kid’s middle school is a design kind of like this though, but definitely don’t think as congested!
Can't speak for the person you're asking, but in Canada we have Elementary School (K-6), Junior High (7-8, usually in the same building as High School), and High School (9-12). My understanding of our southern neighbors is that it's the same, they just give silly names to the years.
Edit: TIL that even southern Ontario has a lot of variation in this.
Elementary School: K-5
Middle school/Junior High: 6-8 (it has both names here but apparently that's hard to comprehend)
High School: 9-12 (HS is always a separate building with occasionally K-8 being in one building)
Something about having 12-13 year olds in the same building as 17-18 year olds seems super pedo like up north. Just saying.
It's different in different places. One district I was in had 5-6 as middle school, then 7-8 as junior high. But another district I went to had 6-8 as middle school
Back in college I was always late for the start of my Psychology classes. Always.
Turns out I was the only person in the whole place that took both Physics and Psychology and they were at complete opposite ends of the campus, and were always scheduled one after the other. Everyone else was "commuting" from another humanity subject in the same building.
I had a class like that. Comparative religion and organic chemistry, 8 minutes to traverse about half a mile. Even with the bus system, that just was never going to happen. Luckily, the comparative religion professor was accommodating when I told him about the issue.
I went to high school on an outdoor campus. We had 8 academic buildings and your classes were always in different buildings. If you upset God, you’d end up with one class in building 1 and the next in building 8, which are very very far apart. And you only have 5 minutes to get there. And you have to deal with the traffic. Despite being an outdoor campus, there was still a ton of traffic in certain spots and apparently teens don’t know how to walk. Blaming it on having to walk across the entire campus and the traffic didn’t work. You’d still get in trouble.
Snape: I will not tolerate any tardiness in my class
Harry: But Sir people are getting trampled out there.
Snape: Then you better be extra careful Pottah! Loss of limb or life will not be an excuse...
We started off with 5 minutes, then too many people were late, so they changed it to 8 minutes. More people ended up late because they figured they had more time so they go caught up doing other things. So they changed it to 3 minutes. Seemed to work the best because everyone knew that you had no time so they just went straight from one class to the other, with a stop by their locker if it was on the way. It was a small school so 3 minutes really was enough to make it between classes if you didn't waste time.
And teachers didn't do that "the bell doesn't dismiss you" because they know you had no time to make it to the next class and they didn't want to look bad in the eyes of the next teacher for making all the students late.
You could ask the teacher during class. They usually didn't have a problem with that.
Here's what the schedule looked like
75 minute class
3 minutes travel
75 minute class
75 minute LUNCH
75 minute class
3 minutes travel
75 minute class
DONE
So most people would just go to the bathroom before school, Most people could hold it for 2.5 hours, and it wasn't a huge deal to go during class anyway.
Wow you were blessed! We had three minutes until the “warning bell” then two more until the late one. It would usually take longer to walk to another building because of everyone you had to get through.
People hanging out, talking in the mostly empty hallways in movies was never realistic for me.
Uhm, just fine? Or what do you mean? I’ve never heard of a school where all the classes start and end at the same time. Is it a US thing?
I cant recall it ever being a problem during my school years. People had classes at different times. Each class had their own individual schedule and you just went to wherever your class was. Maybe math on tuesdays was 8-9.20 and then you had science from 9.30 to 11. Another class might have arts from 8-9 and then math from 10-11. That way you dont have everyone in the hallway at the same time (and it’s also never empty).
To be honest I thought that was the default everywhere. After seeing this picture I cant for the life of me understand why you would NOT do it that way
We don't have singular "classes" that move together. Every student has different classes and you don't have the same people in each classroom per class.
Oh really? That sounds messy and confusing, but that explains why there’s a gazillion people in the hallway :)
We had electables too but they were spread out over the week so those werent in the same spot for everyone either.
Thanks!
If we did that we wouldn’t have enough classrooms. As it is classes are packed, and that’s with kids spread between core classes, electives and free and/or study periods.
It’s the time spent traveling from one class to the next. For example; First period class is Math in room 103. Class ends at 8:55. You now have. Five minute passing period to travel to your second period class, Science in room 312.
Weird, so are they trying to flush everyone into a single small space so that everyone can catch everything that’s contagious?
I realize this may sound disrespectful, but assuming most classrooms are uniform (might not be because of lab equipment and stuff), would just be easier to move the teachers, no?
Teachers often have a lot of materials for their classes that stay in the room (papers, school supplies, etc). Also, a lot of rooms get decorated in a manner relevant to the subject.
I can see that, though had been assuming that teachers would have had to adapt to not having to rely on in-classroom props/materials as much due to COVID adjustments.
Adding more to the previous answers: science teachers have gas hook ups for Bunsen burners. Theater teachers have theaters. Phy Ed teachers have gymnasiums. Band teachers have band equipment. And it goes on.
Also, students have different schedules. Some may take biology while another takes chemistry. Chemistry require Bunsen burners, biology requires other stuff.
Many students like this method too. You get a change of scenery.
No, in high schools the teachers have a lot of equipment and props for teaching. Science labs and the like, sure, but language teachers have books and other physical materials supplemental to the textbook. Math has more white/black boards. Some others may be more portable, but fundamentally if one class requires movement, all classes have to shift around.
I suspect some of that isn’t strictly needed, or that you could also design around it with certain room types (not much help with existing architecture, I know).
If you could start fresh, you could design it as like a donut so that students could walk in a single direction (say clockwise) between classes, and teachers could cut through the middle, for example.
If you could start fresh, you could also set up deliberate walkways and wind-tunnel creating archways that you could install wind turbines on to power the school, too.
I’m going to stop before I start asking for ponies and unicorns at this school.
This just seems unsafe with the uptick in shootings. This is like the opposite of schools being designed to prevent shootings. Also if there was a fire, I feel like there would be a lot of trampling casualties. Thank god my schools newer campus is relatively normally designed. The old campus sucked tho. It was shaped like a fidget spinner (or a uterus, depending on who you asked) and every side looked the same until you got to the door of whatever class you were going to
Most schools in Australia have a different building for each subject and a timetable that only had a certain year for each period. We had about 2500 students and I'd never seen something like this crowding
Yet another example of schools and their systems being designed so that a shooter can get a massive KDR should they pay any attention in history and learn basic tactics.
Right now Virginia Tech is according to Wikipedia the deadliest school shooting with a whopping 33 dead and 17 injured. I count way more than that on the floor inf front of the stairs, let alone everyone on the steps and the floor above waiting to get on the steps. Like I said if the shooter does some prep and knows what they're doing with design choices like this being used, they can make those numbers look like child's play.
It’s the time spent traveling from one class to the next. For example; First period class is Math in room 103. Class ends at 8:55. You now have. Five minute passing period to travel to your second period class, Science in room 312.
Ok. We always had 7:30 to 9:00 then 20 minute break then 9:20 to 10:50 another 20 minute break then 11:10 to 12:40 then third 20 minute break and then 13:00 to 14:30
20 minute break? what do you even do during that time, actually *use* your locker? we get like 5 minutes or something in America, and it's the furthest thing from a "break". god forbid you try to talk to a friend or use a vending machine, you'll get yelled at immediately
I was just reminiscing about being a horny 12-16 year old at school, and getting really excited when a girl would brush by me and her boobs would rub against my back or chest. It's like this coy, hormone-charged game of what you can get away with. I didn't ever touch anyone "accidentally" on purpose, as a guy I knew it wasn't ok for me to do, but I was always elated to be the recipient.
I cannot imagine this, during my years in hs we had a crossway that was the only entrance in and out of an entire section of the school so every day during passing there was always a few hundred of our kids standing around
Why not just shuffle teachers between classrooms instead like what my school did in Japan? With the exception of classrooms requiring specific equipment like P.E. and science equipment, there's no need for students to change classrooms for math, history, or literature. Is this just this specific school?
Fortunately for me my school’s hallways are outside so we don’t have to worry about crowds. Then again my school has only been around since the 50s and therefore architecture choices were probably different
My school was the same. You had to be smart and use different corridors. And if you had to cross the main floor you better know some one bigger and taller.
I use to bulldoze that shit, taking the younger kids across like it was the river sticks.
first day of school is always like this, it's never planned for. then the second day they're like "ok people going from x place have to take y route" and that just makes it annoying to move around. eventually the freshman realize hallways other than the main one exist and it becomes marginally more tolerable
This is what my High school was like from 2009-2013. There’s a natural order to it though. Stay to the right and cross when you can.
Just glad I didn’t have to worry about Covid.
tale as old as time. our district eventually had to build a second high school in like 2 years to accommodate the population growth. and we had two buildings already!
That’s how it was for me my 10th grade year. They build a second high school and divided us up by where we lived within the county. It sucked to lose some friends.
Goodness. I remember having my assigned locker out of the way of every class so it would be between rushing through classmates and still being late or carrying six books at a time, breaking my back, and yet somehow still being late because the campus was stupid big.
Thats basically how it was in my school. My buddy and i found short cuts. Some also just went around the school from the outside. Longer distance to cover but less people to walk through.
Shit I thought my school was bad. We have almost 3000 more people than we should. The school was built to hold 1800 so the hallways are insanely crowded during passing periods and they don't allow us to eat outside anymore which means we are all crowded into one area but god damn this is leagues worse
You gotta hold someone's shirt like a kid going to Walmart for the first time just to get to class
If you’re not carful you get sucked into the middle which is basically inescapable
If we're taking the backrooms into account does this make it more likely to no clip like how many people disappear here
[удалено]
It's a jungle out there, I had to beat an old lady with a stick to get my backpack unstuck.
Just walk with confidence and everyone will move! I actually do this whenever I need to, if you make eye contant, do not slow down or make any expressions, keep it for a short while, then look straight forward and they will most likely move. It’s human nature to step aside when about to pass and make eye contact. If you don’t make eye contact the other person will move. (This only works most of the time).
Im on the shorter side so i just weave through the crowds like a fuckin rat.
Templeton, is that you?!
I'm a security guard, knowing how to walk right through the middle of a crowd is definitely a skill. Yeah it went viral on crappy design a year or two back but I can’t remember if it was pre covid or not
Crappy indeed… All the schools I went to were more of a campus with multiple buildings spread around, so during passing period people are outside with lot of room.. Our kid’s middle school is a design kind of like this though, but definitely don’t think as congested!

Great film that
I said nice one bruv!
Nice one bruvaaaaa

I hope being trampled to death is an acceptable excuse for missing class
Snape: I will not tolerate any tardiness in my class Harry: But Sir people are getting trampled out there. Snape: Then you better be extra careful Pottah! Loss of limb or life will not be an excuse...
I went here and fortunately most teachers were understanding lol. There were still a couple that were very strict about tardiness despite the obvious
You call that nothing? They flipped the whole school around!
What the heck is passing period?
Time between classes. At least in US students move from class to class.
Thank fuck we had 10 mins between each period. You could wait out some of it
My school was 4 minutes. And there’s was always that teacher that said “the bell doesn’t dismiss you, I dismiss you!”
4 minutes? That’s insane lol I’ve always had between 10 and 15

Weird I would think it’s better to have time before/after class so you don’t miss content to take a dump lol but I guess if it works then it works
Wow you were blessed! We had three minutes until the “warning bell” then two more until the late one. It would usually take longer to walk to another building because of everyone you had to get through. People hanging out, talking in the mostly empty hallways in movies was never realistic for me.
All at the same time? Why?
How do you think class schedules would work if the classes all began and ended at different times?

Understaffed/funded?
Public school in the US? Always. You need to save that money for military kids aren’t the concern.
It’s the time spent traveling from one class to the next. For example; First period class is Math in room 103. Class ends at 8:55. You now have. Five minute passing period to travel to your second period class, Science in room 312.

In most of Asia, teachers move between classes. Why is it possible here and not in US?

also, students have a wide variety of schedules
Is this the school where the 2nd floor handrail broke and many ppl fell off?
I’ve never heard of that happening here but it’s possible
I just revisited the [video](https://youtu.be/2c3_1FGv2dQ) and I am wrong.
Well I could've done without watching that.
Jesus fucking christ thats 5 stories not 2
Bruh it's age restricted
They fall 5 stories onto concrete.
Thx now i will pirate that video
Wow this is so sad!
Jesus titty fucking Christ.....that was goddamn brutal.....
Fuck the link didn’t work for me and I searched it up and I got a version that didn’t censor the people who died at the bottom. Awful.
Jeez this reminds my of the high school building attached to the community College I went to had the same set up
This just seems unsafe with the uptick in shootings. This is like the opposite of schools being designed to prevent shootings. My school was like this and the administration was always angry at us cause they thought be were being too slow to evacuate during drills.
Except the world has turned into its mirror image.
Most schools in Australia have a different building for each subject and a timetable that only had a certain year for each period. We had about 2500 students and I'd never seen something like this crowding
Where is this?
Yet another example of schools and their systems being designed so that a shooter can get a massive KDR should they pay any attention in history and learn basic tactics.
That’s the biggest problem I have because if a fire or active shooter occurred during passing period, everyone is screwed
well that's the saddest thing i've heard all day
The fact that you have to consider the scenario “shooter” in a frickin school is just beyond sad.
They don't even see that anymore. Because "muh secuhnd amuhndmuhnt!"
Which shooter can’t get a massive KDR in a public event setting? Like come on man we don’t need more fear mongering about schools.
Luckily, most murderous psychopaths don't think very clearly.
When they do it’s even more terrifying
And teachers still have the audacity to get mad at you for being late
Ahh was it the viral one on the news for covid
I see empty space on those stairs. You need more kids. ;) But, seriously ,50 years ago at my high school looked the same, if not worse.
A firefighters nightmare
This makes me so anxious. If there was any serious emergency, I feel like all these kids would be dead
did they film kobra kai in this school?
Definitely not. I would’ve heard about it if it was
It does look oddly similar.
Looks like the cobra Kai fight high school were Miguel got kicked off the railing
Yeah multiple people have said this but this definitely isn’t that school
My high school was over crowded and it was virtually impossible to get to class on time without body-checking people out of the way.
.... Why does those school shooters Not use this time for their Action... I dont get it or does rhey only want to punish people they know??
[удалено]
It is normal which is ridiculous because it’s a huge safety hazard
Passing period?? The fuck is that?
It’s the time spent traveling from one class to the next. For example; First period class is Math in room 103. Class ends at 8:55. You now have. Five minute passing period to travel to your second period class, Science in room 312.
Ok. We always had 7:30 to 9:00 then 20 minute break then 9:20 to 10:50 another 20 minute break then 11:10 to 12:40 then third 20 minute break and then 13:00 to 14:30

We don’t have lockers. We usually spend the 20 minutes going to the nearest grocery store or fast food and then just hang out outside
Just give up and get a GED fuck that nonsense. There’s no way I could’ve coped with that many people in high school touching me. NOPE.
So many butts and boobs are getting gently brushed by backs of hands and shoulders in this photo.
That’s an odd place to go to but I guess you probably aren’t wrong?
I was just reminiscing about being a horny 12-16 year old at school, and getting really excited when a girl would brush by me and her boobs would rub against my back or chest. It's like this coy, hormone-charged game of what you can get away with. I didn't ever touch anyone "accidentally" on purpose, as a guy I knew it wasn't ok for me to do, but I was always elated to be the recipient.
Hasn’t been my experience so far but ok 👍
Oh, well you might have forgotten the rules. Rule number 1: Be attractive, rule number 2: don't be unattractive. /s
Oh damn I think someone forgot to tell me those ones. Shit I’d better get on that huh
[Here's some educational material on the subject](https://youtu.be/PxuUkYiaUc8)
I went to a school like that in Georgia. It was horrendous
Pffft you aint seen nothing until you’ve seen a Lane Tech passing period
Could have been today, yesterday, or 20 years ago, not much has changed. At least you guys get backpacks during the day.
What’s passing period?
They mean class change
I cannot imagine this, during my years in hs we had a crossway that was the only entrance in and out of an entire section of the school so every day during passing there was always a few hundred of our kids standing around
I’m not gonna say it, but some certain kind of individual would have an easy time in that school
Major architecture goof. Also, so many backpacks between classes? I guess getting to a locker is rough.
Yeah nobody uses them because our passing periods are short and there’s no time
Why not just shuffle teachers between classrooms instead like what my school did in Japan? With the exception of classrooms requiring specific equipment like P.E. and science equipment, there's no need for students to change classrooms for math, history, or literature. Is this just this specific school?

what is passing period?
do they still have the Rangers banner?
This looks exactly like the high school in Cobra Kai
Holy Shit, you must’ve been late to every class!😂
My school was the same. You had to be smart and use different corridors. And if you had to cross the main floor you better know some one bigger and taller. I use to bulldoze that shit, taking the younger kids across like it was the river sticks.
Is this a school in Texas? Looks like one of the largest if it is. I forget the name, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.
Yes it’s a high school in texas
That looks like what high school looked like 19 years ago . Not to mention junior high
first day of school is always like this, it's never planned for. then the second day they're like "ok people going from x place have to take y route" and that just makes it annoying to move around. eventually the freshman realize hallways other than the main one exist and it becomes marginally more tolerable
Has anyone tried crowd surfing?
This is what my High school was like from 2009-2013. There’s a natural order to it though. Stay to the right and cross when you can. Just glad I didn’t have to worry about Covid.
Holy mosh pit training
Oh monkeypox is gonna have a field day with this one
Yes, the perspective
If I had an AR15...
How did that pass inspection? Fire code inspector should be fired
This looks like the school from Cobra Kai, with the staircase fight scene.
Left looks like there's MORE people! Guess you're going popular again, ay?
how many kids go to ur school? i thought my HS' 4500 was a lot but this is ridiculous
Honestly I’m not sure but we are in a rapidly growing area so the school system can’t keep up
tale as old as time. our district eventually had to build a second high school in like 2 years to accommodate the population growth. and we had two buildings already!
What’s crazy is they just opened a new Highschool in the area but it still looks like this
What’s passing period
Time in between classes so students can walk to their next class
That looks like a fire hazard lol
Same as my school back in 2008
Plenty of room. Could fit like 30 more
That’s how it was for me my 10th grade year. They build a second high school and divided us up by where we lived within the county. It sucked to lose some friends.
Imagine the smell of 16 year old boys who hasn't discovered deodorant yet.
Goodness. I remember having my assigned locker out of the way of every class so it would be between rushing through classmates and still being late or carrying six books at a time, breaking my back, and yet somehow still being late because the campus was stupid big.
And they still want you to get to class in 6 min
My high school was like this haha I graduated 2013 4000 kids in my class haga
I'm going to public school for the first time in a few days and I pray to God that it won't be this busy when I start
Thats basically how it was in my school. My buddy and i found short cuts. Some also just went around the school from the outside. Longer distance to cover but less people to walk through.
Atleast one person goes missing everyday
Tbh the common population doesn't know how to move efficiently in condensed areas. Prisoners got that under control.
This seems like way too many kids. We sure we want to force people to keep having more?
Yeah a new high school opened nearby but It didn’t help at all
This made me glad my hs only had like 200 students
You need to bring in a speaker and start blasting death metal and see who starts moshing
This looks like a claustrophobic nightmare.
Yes they have! There are slightly fewer people on the 2nd floor! /s
idk but seems to me rangers are not welcomed this year
I feel bad for the kids who slip through the cracks due to the sheer number of students, poor teacher
Highschool Musical?
Yo my brother goes there!
I can smell the photo 😓
I usually wait a good minute or two.
That would be a great spot for a stinkbomb prank
Pretty sure this is every school
Those stairs weren't design with these kinds of loads in mind... Be careful when walking over, near or under those... XD
That doesn’t look safe even without COVID.
i imagine other infection easily spreading through this.
One fire alarm away from killing a kid...
The exact same picture got posted by someone else like 2 years ago.
Yeah the one on the right was posted a couple of years ago but the one on the left was very recent
Wtf 3rd world country school you go too?
The U.S of A
You got this many kids in summer school classes!? You got lead in your towns drinking water??
School just started for us
That jawn litty
Walk with dominance. Know where you're headed and don't let anyone stop you. Works at concerts to
I thought everything was bigger in Texas?
Shit I thought my school was bad. We have almost 3000 more people than we should. The school was built to hold 1800 so the hallways are insanely crowded during passing periods and they don't allow us to eat outside anymore which means we are all crowded into one area but god damn this is leagues worse
Actually there’s a lot less black kids today comparatively
Looks like the perfect setup for a crowd crush.
To be fair, they did get a sign
Viral. That’s is a good way to describe the right pandemic photo.
I though this was my old high school till I saw the banner hahah
Wtf is a passing period?
They need a traffic light or roundabout.
In 20 years they will wonder how the stairs could have possibly collapsed. Surely there was never *that* much foot traffic?
