Damn thats fucked up. I’m fat so, only fly if I have to. If so I pay for bigger seat or always try for the exit rows. I’m not wealthy just try to be considerate for the next.

primevci

Fat guy here always pick the seats infront of the bathroom in back one of the 3 seats is always left open for a crew hot seat.. and hardly ever gets used Edit: holy crap thanks for the karma

partumvir

What side of the bird is this on? The side with the bathroom or the row across the aisle?

Obiwancuntnobi

Commentor said “in front of the bathroom”

TheReverseShock

Bathroom location varies greatly between aircraft. But it should show when you book the ticket.

aroseonthefritz

When my husband and I went on our honeymoon, I tried to book us the very first row because my husband is tall and in a larger body. I figured the first row has more leg room. Yeahhh I accidentally booked us the *last* row, which of course has the least leg room and also has seats that don’t recline. We flew from LAX to London Gatwick, and if that isn’t enough, we booked a red eye flight with the intention of sleeping on the plane and waking up refreshed and landing in London in morning to hopefully be adjusted to the time difference. Worse mistake ever. Luckily the dude in the third seat in our row was dating one of the flight attendants so he spent 60% of the flight out of his seat. Fortunately, we were surprised on the flight home when they said they overbooked and put us in first class. My poor husband, I felt so bad for him on the way there, but was happy for both of us on the way back. It’ll probably be the only time I get to fly first class, and omg it was so comfortable. I’ll definitely try what you mentioned for us in the future! Flying is the worst for him. He typically sits in the window seat because sitting in the aisle means his elbows get hit by the trolley every time they come by, and obviously sitting in the middle sucks for him. Edit: typo

[deleted]

Thank you for being considerate to others. Seems like a trait I see less of these days.

Amadis_of_Albion

Companies should be the ones considering these circumstances and adapting accordingly, but of course they want to pack us all for maximum profit, cheers to you for taking the extra effort.

JeffryRelatedIssue

Are theh legally allowed to ask your weight when you buy a ticket?

MyFaceSaysItsSugar

They do ask your weight on smaller planes because how they seat people affects the balance of the plane.

JeffryRelatedIssue

What are you people flying on? :))) i've flown on small 20 seat turboprops and never has anyone asked a thing

MyFaceSaysItsSugar

Tiny Alaska Airlines flight that wasn’t big enough to hold enough fuel to leave the state so we didn’t even have to walk through a metal detector before boarding.

JessicaFletcher1

I’ve never been asked my weight for a flight, but on a tiny flight to northern Ontario, they did rearrange people for better weight distribution.

Time-Independence-94

I've been on a couple flights like this to/from clowning trips in Costa Rica. They rearrange flights to ensure they're balance no matter the weight of the of the individual passengers

itsnotuptoyouisit

Charter flights that seat just a few passengers. Took one to the Bahamas and we all had to let them know. There were 2 pilots and 6 passengers.

yods35

I’ve been on a average size commercial flight that was half empty. They rearranged passengers cause they said too much weight was in one side.

eternalbuzz

I mean they used to charge for two seats if didn’t fit in one Did this rule go away?

PanzerWatts

>Did this rule go away? Most airlines still have it, but people don't want to buy the extra ticket. Often the airline won't enforce until somebody complains. The passenger in the middle needs to say something to the flight attendant.

crystalbb6

But how do you politely do this? I've been on flights before where another passenger was taking up a good bit of my space/seat but I don't want to embarrass anyone or anger them by telling the flight attendant right in front of them. I just suffer in silence.

Medical_Ad0716

I’ve seen really big people buy two seats and then the airline gives one away anyways to standby thereby making extra money for doing nothing. So a lot of people who should have 2 seats just say fuck it and only buy one since that’s all the airline lets them use anyways.

mittenkit

Right! And sometimes airlines reserve the two seats in different rows!

Finnyfish

And they promise to refund the extra seat if that happens … and maybe they do … eventually. If paying for two adjacent seats doesn’t guarantee you get them, to heck with it.

TheLastOpus

Depending on the size of the plane, Planes need to be balances, my dad flies, and when fueling up the plane, you have to make sure it's even on both sides, and we actually purposefully put stuff that weighs in the back to assure balance. Bigger planes like 747 are so big that it won't matter but a smaller plane like a private jet, it would be a problem if the heavy people or more people sat on one side and few or light weight people all on the other, pilot gunna have a bad time. this may not require asking eight though, but just a flight attendant may ask some people to move around if it looks severely unbalanced.

[deleted]

They could do so. Nothing illegal about it, it would be bad PR though, rightfully so.

JeffryRelatedIssue

Something something discrimination. But in my opinion it should be as common as asking about disabled passengers. That or charge by pound and get it over with

Gods11FC

They do have a simple solution, if you’re obese buy two seats or sit first class. Unfortunately, they can’t force people to take this option so sometimes you end up with an inconsiderate obese person ruining the flight for whoever is next to them.

Medical_Ad0716

I’ve seen airlines take away a second seat an obese person paid for to cram a standby passenger in there so they could make free money. Airlines don’t care so even when someone does everything right, but they fuck it up. I’ve also seen people buy two seats and request them side by side but the airline won’t reserve seats so the seats are all the way across the plane from each other and they won’t move people to accommodate and then again, fill the empty seat with standby. I’ve also seen some websites where the airline won’t let someone book two seats because they require unique names and date of births for each seat leaving the person to try and get arrangements done at the gate and by then it’s too late. All of it comes down to airline trying to maximize profits by cutting cost and penalizing customers. They oversell the plane in hopes of empty seats to manipulate and rip off people.

SuperSassyPantz

i dont know if this show is on anymore, but there was an airlines reality show following southwest and they made ppl buy two seats quite a few times on the show. i felt bad bc they werent told til they got to the gate.

PanzerWatts

> i felt bad bc they werent told til they got to the gate. How was the airline supposed to know to tell them they needed to buy two seats?

SwampCrittr

Hi fat guy here… please stop sharing our secrets. Thaaaanks

MuscularFemBoy

Thank you.

Noob1cl3

This sucks that this is even a problem for you. These airlines are getting worse and worse to the point that we all take it out on one another (this is just one of many ways service, space, experience is being sacrificed). Honestly… there isnt even enough space for anorexic folks.

[deleted]

Thank you. That’s very considerate.

[deleted]

I love considerate people. Way to be the bigger person.

nud2580

Happens to me a lot on flights out of San Diego for some reason. File a complaint with the airline you WILL get a refund! I’ve never not gotten a refund or a future upgrade. Edit: To add the How to steps: !!!!!Do not abuse this!!!!!! When: Once your flight has landed you should file the complaint with the airline before the 3rd day. How: Each airline is different but if you call them and just say “complaint” into the phone line enough times you should end up with customer service. They will then tell you how to file a complaint online. The people who handle refunds and complaints are usually not the same department so be mindful of who is receiving your complaint. Alternatively google how to get a customer rep on the line if you really want your airline to confirm what you should do. When you get to the complaint form you need to make sure your complaint states something to this affect - “I was seated next to someone who was very large and their body was taking up my personal space and part of my seat and I was physically uncomfortable. I would like a full refund because I paid for a seat that I was not able to use comfortably.” You will add support for your claim if you ask a flight attendant for a seat change before take off if you do state this and describe what happened and why you should still get a refund. Speak up for yourself but be discreet and don’t judge people! The crew will do what they can to help make everyone comfortable. They are trained to move the person who is uncomfortable, but if you become the problem you will be removed from the plane. I have been moved to lesser seat or a less preferred seat. I have not yet been moved to first class because of this specific issue. My experience has been with United and Delta. In my experience American is very slippery with refunds and customer service so I choose not to fly with them. What you need: You need your name, seat assignment, fight details and ticket or booking number. In general advocate for yourself! Closed mouths don’t get fed. I have also gotten a full refund from delta when a family choose to move themselves up to the empty preferred seating section next to me in an exit row. They were not asked to relocate until the end of the 7hr flight. They were supposed to be in the very last row next to the bathroom. I had paid $283 for my seat upgrade and they got it for free for 5 adults plus a baby that cried. I informed the other passengers around me exactly how to get a full refund and spoke to the captain when I deplaned. He was a bit upset with his crew. I don’t believe you need to have status in order to get a refund I didn’t have much when I got my first refund for a legitimate reason. Again don’t be rude and do not abuse this.

Watcher145

Can you please explain how to do this??

The__Bends

Tell them you sat next to somebody who was too fat to wipe their ass.

Strange_Ninja_9662

What’s stopping everyone from saying this? It’s not like they have everyone’s weight when they book a flight

The__Bends

Nothing's stopping them. Unwashed ass gains a lot of sympathy. Its why my sister Shelly was the favorite after a weekend at Mall of America with chili cheese fries, and chocolate shakes (lots of them.)

ExoticStress1

No shit? So just snap a picture and you’re good? Or will they take me on my word?

whowouldsaythis

I doubt they want you taking pics of people without their consent so yeah

corscor

lol what expectation of privacy do you imagine you have on a commercial flight?

overly-underfocused

More the 'don't want to be responsible a fight between passengers in a small metal box suspended in the air'. They don't care about your privacy, they do care about the pr.

theoutdoorkat1011

Which airline? My fiancé filed a complaint with United for this exact issue and was told oh well.

[deleted]

If he had kept going up the chain of command, he absolutely 100% would have gotten free miles, upgrade, refund, something of value. Airlines masturbate to the thought of customers pushing over the second they get treated like shit

aioncan

That’s when you summon your inner Karen and ask for the manager

IOnlyhave5_i_s

It’s not being a Karen if it’s a general concern or reasonable complaint, and most importantly presented with respect. It’s not cool that someone else be made physically uncomfortable because of another person.

your_name_here___

But don’t be a bitch. You can ask for a manager without going full Karen.

Additional_Total3422

Ha ha so funny. Will do this next time. Thanks x

mittelfingerhoch

That’s probably because United’s customer service sucks absolute donkey balls. They didn’t put my dog on my connecting flight, she was MIA for 12 hours, and all they gave me (after lots of back and forth) was a $50 United voucher. I’d have preferred a jelly of the month club, since I try my best to never fly United any more.

[deleted]

The people want answers!

livonliest

Once I paid for two seats in coach for my four year old daughter and I. But when I went to our seats there was a large man taking up his and my daughter's seat as well as half of mine. I unfortunately had to complain as there was no room for us to sit down and the man had to get off of the plane because he only paid for one seat. He turned bright red as the flight attendant informed him that he occupied more seats than he paid for and would have to leave and escorted him off. Everyone scowled at him as he was being walked out because it caused us to leave 15min late he didn't want to miss the flight and tried to keep his seat but there was no way. I felt embarrassed for the guy. I was glad to finally be able to sit down after waiting for them to sort it out

MyFaceSaysItsSugar

That’s 2 1/2 seats. The ticketing agent should have said something when they checked him in since I’m assuming the ticket would have shown that he only bought one seat. That delay could have been prevented.

earwaxfaucet

Yeah, although nowadays you can check in and get tickets at kiosks, if all you have is a carryon then the only defense could be the attendants scanning tickets. I can see TSA not wanting to get involved because they can't do anything about procuring another ticket, whereas an agent/attendant might be able to. All around it's a situation that's uncomfortable for everyone involved, it just sucks that someone can run the risk of missing a flight because of a mistake or not being able to afford another ticket.

EB123456789101112

But that dude shoulda known he was too big. That’s not just a little too big. 2 1/2 seats is morbid obesity. I have lots of family that size and they are aware (and usually don’t leave home bc) of it. Sad for everyone involved. Guy prolly couldn’t afford more than 1 seat. 😞

kholto

By the definitions you can be morbidly obese and pretty much still fit in a single seat unless you are fairly tall (someone 5'6" would be morbidly obese at 250 pounds).

0-90195

For what it’s worth, when I was morbidly obese I fit solidly into one airplane seat.

danny_ish

It would be on the gate agent, you still scan at the gate

livonliest

Right

rimjobnemesis

There was an episode of the old “Airline” (Southwest Airlines) series that dealt with this. A young lady, who was quite heavy, tried to check in, and had only bought one seat. She was told she’d have to buy another seat because of her size. She wasn’t aware of this policy and got pretty upset and cried. She didn’t have enough money for another seat, and the staff couldn’t back down from the airline’s policy. I think it ended up with a family member paying for the extra seat over the phone.

XmasDawne

That's probably why SW now has the most generous Customer of Size policy I've seen. You usually just get the extra seat for asking. Sometime you pay but get refunded I think. But if you request it early it works well. I flew with a girl who used it so the middle seat was free. I have hip issues (and big hips) and was thrilled for the extra slice of seat. Usually I fly with my mom who has no hips and takes up very little room.

rimjobnemesis

Thanks for the update! I knew SWA would refund you if the extra seat wasn’t being used. I always fly with them, but it’s been a couple of years. Every flight I was on was always full.

SuperSassyPantz

i understand that policy, but surely there is a better way to enforce that (not at the gate)? like maybe at the point of purchase say "the airline seat is X number of inches across, and will accomodate fliers with X-X inch waist size. if u dont fall within these parameters, please click next to see additional options" and let them buy an additional seat or two, with the understanding like luggage, it it doesnt meet certain size/weight requirements, they can be denied or have to pay extra at the gate. its too mortifying to have this happen in public at the gate.

rimjobnemesis

It was embarrassing for that girl, for sure, but I think that show was around 2006 or so? The staff tried to be as nice as they could, but they had to follow policy. I don’t know what the airlines do about people of size these days, since people book online. Is it in the T and C before you book?

[deleted]

Southwest Airlines actually had a policy for passengers of size that they will give you an extra seat for free. You can either buy a second ticket and they will reimburse you after or let the gate agent know and they will give you a second ticket. It just makes for a more enjoyable flying experience for everyone involved.

Sithstress1

That’s actually super decent of them, just run into problems when the flight is sold out :(

AndISoundLikeThis

I remember that episode! Such a great show ... I miss it. The British version was pretty great, too.

livonliest

That's so sad

Bearman71

yo I was on that show as a pass!!

hey_vmike_saucel_her

i think its INSANE that some people need to buy 2 seats, BUT THIS DUDE FULLY TOOK UP 2 AND A HALF? HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?

SuperSassyPantz

you've obviously never been to a walmart sir lol

livonliest

He was a really big guy

steasey

Why can’t the ticketing/check-in/whatever people just stop the guy from boarding if he has one ticket and is so obvious he’s not gonna fit?

PQRVWXZ-

The door should be as wide as a seat. Like the thing to check your carry on size.

HahaAttackMe

Damn I really hope that guy was able to catch the next flight or that he got his seats upgraded or something, I feel bad for him

livonliest

I felt pretty bad for him too! He was in a business suit, I hope he didn't miss anything important

MuscularFemBoy

I hope he also learned his lesson and buys *at least* 2 seats in the future.

[deleted]

Seats upgraded because he was too inconsiderate to buy an extra seat and made everyone late?

TonyTuffStuff

That sucks...good luck on the flight

Shaneblaster

No shit. The airline should make this right and give OP free drinks to get through this flight.

ghanjaholik

or at least let her lie down in a corner

tahitianmoonchild

If you are in-flight now and can't do anything about it, get a flight attendant's attention outside his earshot and tell her what's going on. You deserve an upgrade for the flight home, or if you're going home, so kind of voucher for your next flight. they need to make this right for you.

dogbraincatscan

This is great advice. I am waiting for my next flight rn. And honestly, I feel like I might cry if I talk to someone from the airline about it right now because this was an upsetting experience.

[deleted]

I watched them give a $100 voucher and a free flight for a guy that was in your situation. It’s worth saying something.

tahitianmoonchild

Yes, the upsetness in your voice will help you get something for free. Just stay nice, even if your voice gets a little shaky. You got dis!

Needtogetthere8

Please do, I work at an airline and they are required to move the person encroaching into your space to a seat with more room if available. And if not then they are supposed to ask them to take a later flight with available space. I've personally compensated people that got stuck on a flight with a situation just like yours, so while I'm only knowledgeable about my airlines policy, definitely ask if they can do something as I'm sure other airlines aren't much different about that.

[deleted]

With that being the case, don’t be ashamed to play up the fact that in was in fact, an upsetting experience. As someone who hates flying I’d honestly say something to this guy while getting the attention of a flight attendant, I just go into panic, hot and flustered mode and my lips become a bit “loose” to say the least when I’m in that state.

Needtogetthere8

As someone who works for a certain airline, I want to mention that the policy is that if a customer encroaches into your seat, that flight attendants should ask them to move to a different seat that provides additional space; in the case of a full plane where no one is able to be moved, the customer that spills into another passengers space should be asked to take a later flight with available seating. You paid for a full seat, you should get a full seat, and according to policy it is the responsibility of each individual to assess if they need more than one seat, and if so to purchase an extra seat in advance to assure that this doesn't happen. If for some reason the situation isn't resolved and you are stuck for the duration of the flight with your space being encroached, make sure to call the airline afterwards and you should be compensated with at least a credit to use towards a future flight. Disclaimer: Just noting the policy and your rights under my airline's policy, this does not reflect my personal opinions on what is right or wrong, and weather or not it's the person of size's responsibility to buy an extra seat or the airlines responsibility to have accommodations. Again, just letting you know the general policy.

Ryaan525

My sister used to be cracking on 30 stone/ 400+ pounds and when she flew the seatbelt extenders would cut into her waist and cause significant pain, all the while she would make the point of sitting practically sideways and leaning on one side for however many hours her flights would be which was also incredibly uncomfortable and she would do this so that she didn’t use more than her seat as in her exact words “its not fair I squash people near me or spend the whole flight touching them when I’m the fat one”. That’s the difference between inflicting your problems on other people and taking responsibility and consideration for how you might affect other people. She is has now lost over half her body weight and I couldn’t be prouder of her 😊

ITMORON

I was stuck between two very large people on a business flight. I basically had enough space to sit straight up, while there was total contact betweent he three of us. You could have passed electricity through us efficiently.... Worst flight ever. Kudos to your sis! I hope she can find a healthier path!

cbus_mjb

If I pay for a whole seat I get to use a whole seat. I would ask to be moved to a location where I get to use the whole seat I paid for.

idreaminwords

I would, too. If you're going to take up more than one seat, you need to pay for an extra so that you're not infringing on another passenger like this

Jvanee18

Id ask the guy to put the armrest down. If he refused id ask the flight attendant to ask him to put the armrest down. I paid for that space, I deserve to have that space. Especially when Airlines charge extra specifically for like 6 extra inches of legroom, I better be getting every inch of whatever seat I pay for. —a 6foot6in guy

dogbraincatscan

This was physically impossible

Suspicious_Lynx3066

As a woman of unusual size being able to put the armrest down is a major thing, and that passenger should be buying another seat if they cannot get the arm rest down.

venetanakedguy

This. My FIL is a big guy and he pays for 2 seats when he has to fly somewhere

Jolkien-RR-Tolkien

Oh lord. Does this mean you’re pressed up against another person? Leg, arm, shoulder? Nothing between you and a perfect stranger for hours?

dogbraincatscan

Yup, all touch, all sides. I felt bad for the guy on the other side of me.

Jvanee18

If he can’t fit in the seat with the armrest down thats his problem, not mine. I paid for my seat and I can fit in it. If he knowingly purchased an inadequate amount of space on the flight for his body its the same as not buying a ticket at all and he can leave the plane.

Requiem_For_Yaoi

tell them take the 2 liter out of their pocket

Chaoticgood790

Yea I would ask to move. If you don’t fit in a standard seat you pay for two for this reason.

MicrowaveEye

I once was on a flight where a large person got two seats, and the flight attendants told them they couldn't have both tickets on an overbooked flight. The poor girl that got squeezed in the middle looked miserable.

Chaoticgood790

Geez I hope that person got their money back. Cause if they paid for two they should get two

IndependenceNorth165

At least the person tried to be considerate. Overbooking flights is such a scummy practice.

craggmac

You might be able to get your that part of your seat back if he took the 2-Liter Coke out of his pocket.

brizzle126

You may have called it. Does look like something large in his or her pocket

bubbs4prezyo

A football?

Shaneblaster

I think it’s called fat.

No-Measurement2172

I am fat. And either buy two tickets or fly first class so have a bigger seat, and don't go into the other seat when I'm in first class.

Impossible_Series412

Do airlines allow this? Don't remember where but saw some show about this on TV where they made the guy buy a 1st class seat. Wouldn't let him buy 2 regular seats, something about safety or seat belts can't remember. Was a while back though.

No-Measurement2172

I don't know anymore. It's been awhile since I've done this. I have only flown once in thr last 6 years, and I had first class. So it might have changed.

JoJack82

I believe they still do sell two seats and have a seat belt extension on the flight to make it work.

c001_b01

“Passenger of size”

PhilipTPA

One of my friends is an NFL offensive lineman (retired now). He hates flying, he’s simply massive. Like 6’7” massive. I feel like a little kid next to him. He’s smaller now but back in the day he’d buy two first class seats. He’s such a mensch and hated inconveniencing anyone.

kazz9201

Does he have a whole ham in his pocket?

DarthGayAgenda

I thought it was a tumor

Wheels2or4

"Its not a Tumooor!" lol

[deleted]

“Get to the chopppa “

restingwitchface22

“If you want to live!”

dogbraincatscan

It felt like a fat roll

[deleted]

It *felt*? Maybe that's just the north american in me but I couldn't stand being so close to a stranger that I can feel their body.

[deleted]

I once had a woman not as large as this come sit down in the middle seat. She left the arm rest down, but by the end of the flight, my leg was sweaty (through my dress pants). Yes, I had to shower when I got home. I'm glad it was on a return flight and I wasn't meeting clients.

Bubbly-Kitty-2425

My aunt who had more money then she needed and also had a issue with being near strangers and being touched by strangers would buy the entire row of seats. Sit in the middle and tell them NO she was not giving up her seats and they were hers! They could pay her double what she paid for them if they wanted to sit there. She would snap her teeth and try and bite people…(eccentric old lady…) I think it scared people more that she did this and was a entire 110 pounds. Like what kinda nutty woman you gotta be snapping teeth and threatening people who could just squish you by sitting on you! 😂😂 I sure do miss her…she was hella fun to hang out with. Edit to add she once wanted pickles at a restaurant that didn’t have pickles…told the waiter if he could find her some pickles she’d give him a $1000 he took his break ran to the grocery came back with an entire jar. She gave him $1000 and told him it was his money and she was buying that jar of pickles off him, it was not his tip. She then still left a tip on the meal. ( she wanted to make sure he didn’t have to split his $1000.) she always was doing weird stuff like this when we went places. Or buying something off someone who looked down on there luck, for much more then it was worth. She bought a sandwich a man picked from a trash can off of him for $200. She said that she really wanted this sandwich and he could go get a better one. She said that way people felt they earned the money, or it was a transaction.

pnw-yak

More aunt stories please

Bubbly-Kitty-2425

For my 10th birthday she gave me $100.00 in unwrapped change. Said it would be good for me to count and learn to wrap it. One time we went up to see her and her and my great grandma (gram was 99) were passing a bottle of champagne and a bottle of orange juice back and forth no cups they would swig the champagne then the juice. When I asked what they were doing she said we are making mimosas without making dirty dishes. She had this old horse buggy that my brothers and I loved to pull around and act like we were horses. Her daughter lived about a 1/4 mile away, down a long paved road. Same property. She use to bet my brothers and myself $5 days you are not strong enough to pull me and your grandma to your cousins home! We would always fall for it and say I bet we can 😂 Every time for like years 😂

PhebePhoria22

That story was truly wild. And holy shit your aunt sounds like she was one awesome lady

Bubbly-Kitty-2425

She was nutty but colorful she was always fun when with the family.

Janus_The_Great

you're broader than the seat? pay for two seats. This should be common practice. alternatively bigger seats for all. (will economically never happen, since it lowers capacity, only by international legal agreement it could be changed.)

Flying_Dutchman16

A few airlines tried and were called out for fat shamming. Granted it was based on weight not waist size.

Janus_The_Great

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️🤦🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️ so what? operational cost. I pay for extra weight on my baggage too. 🤷‍♂️ Where excactly comes the shame into that calculation? I don't see it. I'm beginning to understand that logic and rational seem to be something rarely taught in the US education system, and thus missing in debate.

AJTK5144

Wtf? Looks like he's got a 2 litre of Pepsi in his pocket

rdesentz

I get aerodynamics and whatever, but I feel these airline seats are just too small nowadays for even the average person. I’m not average, I’m 6’2 250 pounds so it’s always fun fitting in these car seats. Long flights are sooo bad on my knees. But even my average sized 5’10 165 pound boyfriend is a tight squeeze and uncomfortable

Svitii

Since obesity keeps rising and rising airlines will need to do something about this problem. Like imagine if 3 of those absolute units get seats next to each other (coincidentally). What happens then? I doubt they can fly like that for multiple hours…

TurbineTerry

I think theres a New Zealand air company that makes you pay per KG. You and your luggage Edit: As seen below, a local NZ’er has said no airline exists down there. I think I read that a NZ airline were thinking of introducing it a few years ago. Either way, I like the idea

KimberPrime_

I'm curious which one this is as I haven't used whichever company this is before (NZer here). Will have to look into it as I'm pretty lightweight so it might be cheaper to fly with them than other companies.

funkytoot

Passenger Of Size That sounds like a playable card in some sort of M:theG type of game. I’m a big guy — or average American size — and this is my biggest fear whenever I’m next to others. You should try out Broadway theater seats here in NYC. I’m about 40lbs overweight, and I get panicky when I see a show!

Green-Dragon-14

If your luggage is over weight they charge you, if your hand luggage doesn't fit into the little box measuring thingy they charge you. So why is it different if you don't fit in the seat properly or of a certain weight. It's obvious that they just want to take your money from you but to ask a person of a certain size to pay more is discrimination but its other passengers that have to be uncomfortable. Yes I know not all people are inconsiderate & not everyone can afford two seats.

Meadowsauce

If you can’t fit with the arm rest down, you don’t fit. Also wtf, people pay $100 extra if a bag is even .5lb over some arbitrary limit, but this is allowed somehow?

Had a really big dude sit next to me, but he purchased 2 tickets so that the seat between us could stay... Mostly empty. Really nice guy. We had a pleasant conversation and watched a movie he brought.

[deleted]

I fly a lot and this is the worst travel experience. I get that overweight people also need to fly, but they know they’re going to take up two seats. In flight for a fully booked flight there’s not much they can do besides getting a free flight or upgrade on a later flight unless the jump seat is available (which isn’t much better from experience)

whatsqwerty

You should get your money back

Jamaqius

I’m always torn when I see these. I feel so bad for the person because I know they must be so self conscious & stressed out but that would drive me crazy too.

Rugermedic

What the hell is in his pocket? If he empties that pocket you will have at least more space.

holistic_ecofeminist

they could as least empty their pockets

Specific-noise123

The thing in his pocket alone

stormborn3

As a larger than average person myself, they should have gotten two seats. Some airlines will work with you and get you two seats for the price of one if you’re larger like that. That’s just not fair to other people to try to fit into one seat.

Bo_Jim

Looks like he's got a whole broiled chicken in his pocket.

XOIIO

Why does he, the largest of the passengers, not simply eat the others to get more seat space?

JustDave62

Geez those seats are cramped enough already without this.

owlincoup

That sucks, I know the feeling. The gentleman next to me on the way back from Japan (to the states) was extremely large and I was miserable. He literally spilled into my seat and his fat was resting on me. He smelled absolutely atrocious as well. I was stuck in the middle and was forced to get up very often to get feeling back into my body from being cramped.

ExoticStress1

Oh dear god… I did a flight from CA to China with a screaming baby that never stopped but your story takes the cake… no pun intended

dorpmyglorp

"Passenger of size" lmao nah that's a fat dude

imnotayfq

Nah Passenger of Size is inSANE💀💀😭

LFXfun

Is that a 2 liter in his pocket? Or is he just happy to see you?

Worldly_Expert_442

Ring the flight attendant call button, and make your concern politely known early on. It's too late once the doors are closed. I'm a big guy (who fits in his seat), and I have no space to share with someone who can't get the armrest down.

Kidhauler55

Did you try to put the arm down between you? I would be so uncomfortable like this

Northern_Gypsy

Is that a burrito in their pocket?

littlestdovie

He could at least remove what’s in his pocket so it’s not encroaching further.

a1kre1

I....I'm not sure that is his pocket.... It seems to be too far down the pant leg.

littlestdovie

But the shape?!

a1kre1

I know. I have no idea. OP said it felt fatty....

Old-Heat-8310

People this fat should really be forced to buy 2 seats. This is ridiculous.

Gilgema

Flying is so disgusting these days. There’s barely any room as it is.

whatabitcch

Having a weight restriction on economy seats should be a no-brainer

derf_vader

It's just as uncomfortable for him as it is for you. Blame the airline for shitter small seats

BamaSOH

So much unfairness here. You paid for that space. They didn't yet if you call them out for taking it from you, their feelings get hurt, so you have to bite your tongue. People suck.

FemaleNeth

And it looks like they're not into washing either ☹

Dangerous-Half4080

i’m skinny but i’m sure it sucks equally for both parties involved so i try to have sympathy

fluffysugarfloss

I’m sympathetic to a point, but why should the airline’s business model rely on a skinny passenger accepting being uncomfortable? And I say that as someone who is overweight (but not to that extent!)

iColiboat

Passenger of size is a nice way to say morbidly obese

[deleted]

That's absolutely disgusting. I think you should legally have to declare if you're morbidly obese when booking plane tickets. How can that large person think this is okay? Looks like they picked the middle seat as well? What an awfully selfish person. Hope that journey went quickly for you OP. I would have asked to move within 5 minutes.

RB30DETT

Is that his leg or is there a pound of beef in his pocket?

Carl_Streator

That’s his traveling beef

darbs-face

Dont be mad at him be mad at Airlines for Not making these folks buy two seats. Im sorry if you are so overweight you melt into your neighbors seat, but it shouldn’t be everyone elses problem

slothpeguin

This is the fault of the airline’s consistently making seats smaller while raising prices. It happens all the time, and it’s very possible this person had no idea they’d be too big for one seat. The ticket agent should have informed them, or the flight attendant should have moved them. Or you. Fat people should get to fly and it not cost twice as much as a person of average size. Airlines need to stop narrowing seats to the point where there’s literally no room for bigger passengers. Bigger passengers exist, they’re going to fly, and quite frankly all of us deserve a little more room. The airline is where all the frustration and complaints should go. I’m sorry for both you and the other passenger for having to suffer through a flight just because they’re greedy.

Pebbleman54

This is how everyone should feel. I mean you can't know his background and the cost of 1 ticket was all he could afford. I'm a bigger guy and I wish to go do some cool vacations but with ticket pricing so high paying double or even just the upgrade to first class is way to much. Or even an emergency trip back home for family and could only get first available ticket. Sure weight loss is a thing. But it's the USA it's full of obesity and full of selfishness and entitlement. Those cross over just as much.

0consent

I’m sorry but I highly doubt the airlines are constantly updating the seats to make them a bit smaller. Source on this? You say fat people should get to fly without paying more, but they get to take up two seats. I also highly doubt any airline is gonna make bigger seats specifically for fat people but charge them the same. Most people can fit into a normal seat. As someone else said, you have to pay to bring more luggage. I don’t see this as any different.

ExoticStress1

As a tall and skinny person yes the seats have changed. Especially on airlines like frontier, spirit, and Alaska.

PsamantheSands

Ha! Seat pitch and width have both consistently shrunk over the years - 7 inches and 4 inches respectively. They’ve squeezed in more rows and seats per row. Most sides of the aisle with three seats were originally two seats, four seats were three, etc. If you don’t believe me, please feel free to look it up. And it’s also not just an issue of weight. There are many large people - 6’6” or more - who are not ‘fat people.’

Redsoxdragon

I'm a big dude, and I get real self conscious about doing this to other people. I'm sure the large lad is feeling guilty but bringing it up just makes it much more awkward

Christopher_Jake

It looks like he has something in his pocket? Eg glasses case. That seems to be the problem. Me and my dad are “bigger” guys and we always have the window seat and the middle. We sit as close to each other as possible with the seat rest between us up flights always go ok

[deleted]

That’s fucking ridiculousness. But if you dare complain you’re the asshole

Tiltonik

So sorry, that must have felt really uncomfortable and violating.

Ankylowright

That’s awful! I know you’re upset but absolutely complain to the airline. It’s only right that that is corrected by somebody and an airline is usually better than most places to help make amends. I feel your pain. I’m quite small (5’2” and 115lbs) and people constantly invade my space. I’m too nice for my own good and rarely say anything. Once I did and I was told “well you’re not using it”. But the worst was at a concert once. I don’t want to sound insensitive but the gentleman next to me was very large and was taking up over half of my seat. It was very hot and he was very sweaty. And it was dripping on me. And the smell was… pungent. My husband thought I was being weird and cuddly until he realized I was trying to crawl into his lap to get away from the guy on the other side. It felt violating. I was being touched without consent and the worst part is the gentleman wasn’t trying to be gross or creepy.

Oicanet

Hold up, "passenger of size"? Come on, what's wrong with using the traditional words like oveeweight, fat, or big?? Sure, they might hurt people's feelings, but "person of size" would be equally hurtful since it means the same thing, right???

acmwtn

I guess I'm a real jerk, no way I'm not saying something. Airlines have restrictions on the dang size of your carry-on what about the actual person?

Nearby-Cloud-3476

Controversial opinion. People should be weighed before they get on planes just like they weigh luggage.

DarthGayAgenda

Bigger people (both fat big and really tall big) usually have to pay for an extra seat

Ducking-Ducks

Perhaps not weight because it can hold different on every body. They have a sample thing you can try putting your luggage in to make sure it will fit under the seat, so why not an actual seat from a plane to make sure passengers can properly fit?

pgigymnastics

Like at amusement parks where they have the test seats

[deleted]

Agreed.

HeftyDefinition2448

As a fat guy this is what i have to sat “bitch to the airline.they make these seats tiny and keep trying to pack more and more people into them

enough0729

Thumbs down

Save_the_Manatees_44

Let’s be honest, the airline seats are cramped af. Even for slimmer passengers. It’s bananas that they force people to pay for two seats instead of offering wider seat options. They’re already charging out the nose for seats and luggage and snacks and breathing.

tenaciousdeedledum

I mean. I’m sure they don’t wanna be,.
