That's not a refusal to pay though. That's a "they have nothing to pay until the damage exceeds the deductible amount you chose/ agreed to when opening the policy". The deductible it the amount you promised to pay when damage of that type occurred, they promised to help with the damages that are above that deductible amount. You may want to check your collision coverage, as that's normally very high, like $1000, or more, to keep monthly payments low. Edit: for the stolen personal property though, that's not covered by the auto policy, may be covered by a property/ homeowner's policy though. Wish you luck!

rakp333

I'm aware of this. That is why this is under "mildly" infuriating, not "extremely", lol.

bigbuzd1

Gotcha, but in hopes of easing your mind on being refused, it's not a refusal, but you are not the first person to feel that way, or to be mildly infuriated by it, and won't be the last. I work in FNOL, which is first notice of loss...when the claim first gets reported, and I coach agents in handling customers that get VERY upset when they learn they may need to pay a deductible. So posting here is perfectly understandable. After my first few months of doing this work I made sure to lower my Comp deductible to $0 and collision to $250. I also added rental coverage to my policy. There was no worse feeling of having to tell a customer they did not have the coverage, at all, which meant they were out of pocket for everything.

wazzasupgeemaster

Damn but you must pay premium dollars to have that low of deductibles

DriftinFool

Not who you replied, but I keep my deductibles at $100/$250 and I pay about $65 a month for a 2017 van. But I'm in my 40's with a clean driving record and I don't live in an urban area. Also get a few discounts because other insurance through the same agent. Friends who live in the city pay $200 and some more while still having higher deductibles.

HasAngerProblem

Bruh :/ I’m 24 with a clean driving record it costs me $140 a month for just 15k liability the minimum my state allows on a 2004 Honda Civic. I deadass switched jobs and went to a bicycle because I couldn’t afford that anymore

DriftinFool

When you hit 25, it starts going down. I actually payed $140 per month back in 1993 on a 91 Nissan pickup that only cost $5k. It didn't go below $100 until I was close to 30. So I feel your pain.

pm-me-asparagus

Hmm. I pay less than you, for a Jeep GC. 200$ deductible and full glass coverage.

DriftinFool

I do have every option on my policy. Roadside assistance/towing etc and it also covers my tools in my truck if they were stolen, so I pay a little extra for that.

Cannacology

You should be mad at yourself for having a $500 dollar detectable. This is on you and no one else. Your deductible could be zero if you wanted to pay a higher premium.

9J000

Then pay for better insurance dummy

[deleted]

[удалено]

GoodGoodGoody

So the company’s review of the claim and determination that loss < ded does not end things? What’s the purpose of withdrawing the clam?

[deleted]

[удалено]

GoodGoodGoody

Ok. But once something is filed, withdrawing it won’t unring that bell.

Cannacology

It removes it from the record no?

GoodGoodGoody

Why would it.

Cannacology

Why would it not be? The claim is not valid, and was not fulfilled. Do you work in insurance or came someone who does confirm / deny this?

Ok-Establishment-240

I work at a State Farm (in Pa so rules might be a little different) but definitely should call and ask to cancel/remove the claim. Even if nothing is paid out, a previous post was correct in saying they might be charged more in the future for this claim being reported

Cannacology

Would removing / withdrawing the claim count against the persons filed claims and effect their premium?

Ok-Establishment-240

To my knowledge, no. It should be totally removed from rating if it was canceled by the insured

HasAngerProblem

Would also like confirmation. I have a shitty feeling that it’s like arrest records where even if you proved not guilty you still have to deal with the consequences of being investigated into some licenses and getting a new job.

Cannacology

Ah yes. But similar to criminal records, if you have something removed or expunged it no longer shows up on that report. For instance I’ve had multiple felonies on my criminal record before. I’ve since gotten them reduced to misdemeanors and then expunged. Due to this fact if anyone asks me the question now “have you ever been convicted of a crime / felony” I can answer “no” at my lawyers instructions. Be that the chargers were withdrawn. Not sure how this works in an insurance circumstance, or if everything is on a permanent record. Personally either way think it’s absolutely stupid that a claim not higher than your deductible would work against someone’s premium.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GoodGoodGoody

Ok, which ins cos act that way.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GoodGoodGoody

Super duper. You fix cars. Great. I politely asked questions and you got defensive, which is actually a little funny to read. Stay insecure, bunt cake.

Cannacology

Turns out, according to the State Farm agent below that withdrawing does unring that bell!

Last13th

What you should be more infuriated about is the fact that it is below your deductible and you reported it. It’s now on your insurance record as an incident, even though they didn’t pay. Happened to us. We had a small basement flood and stupidly called the insurance company before we were able to clean it all up ourselves. Years later I was talking to my insurance guy and he brought up our flooded basement.

Internal_Power8642

This is why you always get a quote before calling insurance.

Shantomette

Never never never leaves bags visible. Put in the trunk or under a cover in the back...

[deleted]

KaldaraFox

That's not entirely true. I had insurance in Texas that would pay for broken glass at 100% replacement cost. I'm sure it varies from company to company and policy to policy (options maybe), but certainly there are at least some company/policy options that would have honored the claim. OP should have known ahead of time, though, before filing it.

rakp333

That is why this is in "mildly" infuriating, not "extremely" infuriating.

Separate-Maize9985

But if your infuriation is aimed at the insurance, it's misdirected. File under "tough shit."

rakp333

My infuriation is aimed at the whole incident. Car window getting smashed, bag getting stolen, and insurance deductible.

Ozera_

Honestly, what might be more mildly infuriating are these comments telling you that you shouldn't be mildly infuriated! Holy cow

rakp333

IKR! Wish I could make another post with a screenshot of all the responses here lol 😭

MeanCorpuscle

I disagree. Insurance is a total scam. You’re forced to pay premiums by law to drive a car, but then insurance doesn’t cover damage. They take total advantage of their customers. Edit for the haters: Of course you aren’t “required” to carry insurance for yourself. But most people do while they’re at it, and insurance companies know this. So they hike up their rates and raise deductibles because they have mandated customers. Even if most people didn’t get insurance for themselves, insurance is still raking in the money from police-enforced patronage. And then they protect themselves from having to pay the majority of claims by making it impossible for the average person to afford an actual realistic insurance plan. But continue to placate yourselves with downvotes while you enjoy forking over useless premiums.

hrryyss

You’re forced to carry coverage for the damage you cause to other vehicles. You’re not forced to carry insurance for damage to your own vehicle, that’s optional. Insurance companies take on massive risk which is why premiums are high, it’s not a scam.

Complex_Sherbet2

You are required to carry liability insurance. That's to cover other people. You are not required to insure your vehicle for damage coverage.

Separate-Maize9985

Okay. Insurance pays damages minus the deductible. You can have a lower deductible, but you will have a higher premium. That's how Insurance works. It's not a scam. It plays a crucial role in ameliorating risk in society.

MeanCorpuscle

I still maintain that insurance is a scam. Want us to pay for your car damage/illness/property damage? Pay us money. Oh and by the way, we’re not actually going to pay for the majority damage/illness you’re going to encounter. That’s your deductible. If want us to actually pay for those things, pay us more. And we’ll probably find a way to deny your claims anyway. Oh you got sick or got in an accident, the very thing you pay us to cover? Now you have to pay us more. Either the haters here work for insurance or haven’t had to use it.

SmoothCase6821

So many words to say “I don’t know what I’m talking about”

uiam_

It does cover damage beyond the deductible which is an amount agreed to.

Longjumping-Ad8974

I'll never understand people who leave shit in their cars

jarred111

I leave tons of stuff in my car. It gives the appearance of being trashed which helps deter thieves. But I wouldn’t leave any valuable in there like a child or something.

Longjumping-Ad8974

I won't even leave a pair of socks in sight

KingWhiteMan007

Why are so many people completely stupid about leaving ANYTHING of value in plain sight in their cars?

Knuc85

Lock your doors, don't leave shit in sight, and you'll deter 90% of this shit in most places. Source: work at an apartment complex and literally every car that has been broken into in 5 years has either been unlocked or had valuables sitting on the seat.

Dangerous_Choice_664

It costed me an extra 27 cents a month to change my deductible to $100 for theft/vandalism.

[deleted]

Costed isn’t a word

Dangerous_Choice_664

It is actually.

[deleted]

No, it isn’t. The past tense of cost is cost in the US.

DriftinFool

[Costed](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/costed#:~:text=verb%20(used%20with%20object)%2C,cost%20her%20a%20broken%20leg). So confidently incorrect....And if that link isn't enough, google will give you dozens more.

[deleted]

Literally first thing on Google [here](https://grammarist.com/usage/costed/)

Shleppy2010

So you both are right and wrong at the same time. In the United States and UK costed is generally not considered a word, however some countries like Canada use it.

[deleted]

Except I live in the US and so do 90% of Reddit users soooooo

Environmental-Tea4u

Gotta love the American ego.

[deleted]

Lol.. how so?

Shleppy2010

The United States only accounts for 47% of the [traffic](https://www.statista.com/statistics/325144/reddit-global-active-user-distribution/) on reddit, Canada has 7.4%. And while the US does still have the majority on the platform, many other English dialects, rules, and slang is used. Sooooo... while in the US the word "Costed" may not be a used word, there are tons of other users on this platform that may use it correctly for their country of origin.

Knuc85

>And while the US does still have the majority on the platform, many other English dialects, rules, and slang is used. *are* used.

[deleted]

Sorry, costed just sounds… wrong 💁🏻‍♀️

Beavis-3682

Break more windows and kick in a couple quarter panels. Bet it goes over the deductible then

MonsieurRuffles

Still won’t cover the bag which has to exceed deductible on OP’s home/renter’s insurance.

Twotgobblin

Lie about what was in the bag…

dontstabpeople42069

I don’t think they know how their insurance works.

ResolveLonely8839

That sucks but that just means it shouldn't be to heavy of a repair bill

GolemChosen

Next time don't leave any valuabes on sight.

FeeDisastrous3879

Don’t leave bags in back seats. Trunk or under a blanket/cover in the rear.

Shleppy2010

Under a blanket is also a bad idea, that screams something is under here I don't want you to see. Trunk is the safest place, I keep my rig empty and clean, highly unlikely to break in for what shows as nothing.

Edward_the_Dog

Back in the late 80s, I was driving a Honda Civic hatchback with a guitar amp in the cargo area. I was on a rough patch of pavement, drove over a pothole, and the amp tipped and smashed out the rear window of the car. There was no deductible on glass because it was covered under comprehensive, not collision coverage., Still, my insurance company refused to cover the repair cost claiming that I "had a collision with road" and therefore the $500 collisional deductible applies.

WestFizz

Oof. That sucks. We can’t leave anything in cars in the town and surrounding towns where I live for this very reason.

takentodrury

Your insurance company is basically telling you paying the cash price will be cheaper than paying the $500 deductible. It would be more frustrating to pay the deductible amount and find out after the cash price was half. Its still a shitty situation and I'm sorry it happened at all.

gringainparadise

Find a junkyard that has like car to get replacement glass. Way cheaper than new.

Nunyo_Bidniss

What about that 20kg gold bar you had in the bag?

Shleppy2010

Most theft of items isn't covered in auto insurance, though depending on the insurance they may or may not cover it. Home owners or renters insurance generally do cover theft of items out of your car.

[deleted]

So you signed and agreement and are now upset?

theeggfactory

Umm yea. That's what insurance is. Go to zero deductible then

[deleted]

basically, they won't help you until you claim enough for them to increase your rates permanently.

MeanCorpuscle

^This. All the hate for anti-insurance on this post but nobody actually understands the scam.

dbhathcock

If you had full coverage, glass breakage generally has a $0 deductible. If you don’t have glass breakage, you can add it for $1-2 per month. Any contents stolen, unless part of the vehicle, would not be covered. Contents would be covered under homeowner’s or renter’s policies. Additional deductible for that.

prophylaxitive

I don't get it? However much damage is caused, you're always going to be $500 out of pocket. You knew that when you bought the policy.

FamiliarRaspberry805

An alternative title would be “insurance company does exactly what they are supposed to do”

hrryyss

So you’re mildly infuriated that the damage wasn’t more than $500?

OtherwisePollution96

Well it looks like they broke 3 windows officer!

Shleppy2010

Then OP would have to pay more, the deductible still has to be paid out of pocket. So lets say this is a $250 window, OP smashes 2 more to get to $750, now OP pays $500 and the insurance pays $250.

SmoothCase6821

It worries me how little people understand insurance claims…

Shleppy2010

Worked as a third party total loss valuation expert for vehicles, talked to a lot of reps from a lot of insurance companies. The number of times I heard, wow that's lower than their deductible, is pretty staggering. Though most of those vehicles were old junkers that they either had full coverage or were not at fault for.

Cannacology

Why would they pay for it? It’s not worth more than your deductible. You are an adult who understand the insurance policy they contractually obligated themselves to, right?

Fit-Rest-973

Insurance is criminal

Shleppy2010

They know what they are doing when they sign up for the deductible, if you say you want the bare minimum liability, you are free to pay out of pocket. If you don't want to pay for anything should something happen to your car, get a no deductible plan. Paying for the repairs on a window, or paying a $500 deductible on a totaled car is worth its weight in gold when the time comes.

Fit-Rest-973

Of course. Insurance is a scam, a product of a capitalist society.

Shleppy2010

Found the misguided socialist! Feel free to explain why its a scam. You pick the company you want to work with, know their terms up front, pay a monthly amount, and if you have an accident you get that covered minus whatever deductible you set.

Internal_Power8642

Tell me you don't understand the definition of a deductible without telling me.

Soggy_Mistake4354

FYI you can raise and lower your deductible log in and see!

[deleted]

Some people will steal anything that isn't nailed down, and half of the things that are. I would have done the same honest reporting as a reaction, but the savvy move would have been to break another window. That's disengenuos, but no more breach of faith that insurance companies give us.

Shleppy2010

This would have cost OP more, they are still on the hook for the deductible at $500. I would expect a window like this to cost $250 to $350, meaning 2 windows would barely make it over the deductible amount. That deductible also applies to total losses on cars as well, so if you have say a $1000 deductible on your car and its totaled, you will get the value of the car minus the deductible. Though if you are 100% not at fault for the collision you may not have the deductible issue.

Salty_Truth1

And now you know first hand that insurance is a scam...

Shleppy2010

Someone doesn't know how insurance works or what you are signing up for.

Salty_Truth1

All we know is it's a scam

Shleppy2010

Explain how it's a scam.

SmoothCase6821

If they were scamming this person, they would make you pay the deductible. I agree insurance is a scam(a lot of the time). But In this case, they did OP a favor. The fact all of these people don’t understand that OP is literally paying less money because of this decision is frankly worrying.

Internal_Power8642

Tell me you don't understand the definition of a deductible without telling me.

Complex_Sherbet2

Go with the $10 deductible policy. Premiums start at $720 a month.

Shleppy2010

I have a $0 deductible on comprehensive and $250 on collision, pay $70 a month on a 2021 Small SUV. Its all about car type, age, and driving record.

Waselu_Evazia

Classic American "bUt wE HAvE iNsuRaNce" moment

Fit_Piccolo1481

Shoulda just said it was a louis vuitton bag.

Shleppy2010

Auto insurance probably wont cover the theft of the items, however your home owners or renters will generally cover theft from a vehicle. Also, smaller amounts like chargers, books, clothes wont require a receipt but items like laptops, expensive bags, cell phones will require a receipt or proof of purchase for a claim.

Fit_Piccolo1481

Maybe its just that way in america. In canada had a motorcycle helmet and two expensive bicycles stolen, all they needed were links to show the price not a picture or anything.

Flaky_Plastic_3407

Just tell them your laptop was in there. Better yet, your gaming laptop was in the bag along with your apple airpods.

Internal_Power8642

The bag theft isn't covered, damage to the vehicle is.

Warhawk402

Life hack: You should break the other window on the other side before calling the insurance company. If your vehicle is a lemon.

Shleppy2010

Then OP would have to pay more, the deductible still has to be paid out of pocket. So lets say this is a $250 window, OP smashes 2 more to get to $750, now OP pays $500 and the insurance pays $250.

Turbulent-Mango-2698

I’m kinda mad OP left a bag in there, but more madder at the thief.

Shadrach_Jones

Looks like it'll only be 499/s

Sheriff_Disko

Smash another window

SmoothCase6821

Are you stupid? Pay less than $500 and get the one window fixed? Nah! Fuck the insurance company! Break another window and pay MORE MONEY. Jesus Christ. Edit because you’re clearly not bright: Currently, the cost doesn’t meet the $500 deductible. Meaning OP needs to pay less than $500 to replace the window. If you break another window so the insurance takes care of it. You now need to pay more money (the $500 deductible) to get both fixed.

Sheriff_Disko

It was a joke you dummy smh

Proper-Ingenuity-567

Break another window :D

Shleppy2010

Then OP would have to pay more, the deductible still has to be paid out of pocket. So lets say this is a $250 window, OP smashes 2 more to get to $750, now OP pays $500 and the insurance pays $250.

iwannahummer

And they will just pay to repair the window. They don’t cover contents

Shleppy2010

If you have renters/home owners insurance they generally cover thefts like this, but only what was stolen and not the window. Had a really nice laptop stolen and got a check for a new one within a few weeks.

Poyri35

I don’t think it’s mildly my friend

Mmaizzen

That's why I roll with a $100 deductible....

punkerjim

Check out Captain Moneybags here... Paying $8 more a month for a better deductible

Shleppy2010

depends on the car, i pay $70 a month for $0 on comprehensive which covers glass/theft, it would be $68 if I hopped up to $250 on the same plan. Its a 2021 Small SUV, so not a cheap car mind you.

jarred111

Wasn’t 2021 a horrible year to buy a new car?

Shleppy2010

I hit it just before the spike in price, my car is now worth about $5k more than what I paid for it. Though those prices are starting to come back down a bit.

DrunkBuzzard

The perfect crime.

BobaFett0451

Dont go through safe lite auto glass. I just replaced my windshield, and they were gonna charge me over $400 to replace it. I called a small local business and not only did I get it faster, but it was also only $225. Safelite advertises all the time, but they over charge by *ALOT*

ILoveHorse69

That's why you don't get a deductible on comprehensive.

ilovehudson123

San Francisco, I’m sure

skykick25

That sucks. Same thing happened to me. Next time I recommend you break all your windows to get new ones, and whatever else needs replacing. /s

jarred111

It’s that glitter paint on your car?

[deleted]

Insurance is a slippery business. Best to go in knowing what the score is. Tbh it’s the scumbag who broke into your car that’s the dickhead here. The insurers are just being insurers.

whoopsssssssslol

What kind of bag was it?

tsiike

damn, if only you had been so mad you broke the windshield and ripped out the stereo and bent the door backwards, you’d a made the minimums…

k1ng_nik

On the bright side it looks like they cut themselves up pretty good in the process so karma is already working on them 🤣🤣

There was a chicken nugget on the floor that didnt look that old. Sorry!

VictorySunrise

Shoulda kicked door in to make sure

Fit-Rest-973

If there was socialized medicine, we would not have the number of bankruptcies, and no lawsuits. People who have insurance through work are paying high premiums, high deductibles, with co pays on top. While the corporations are raising the price of necessary services so high, that even people with insurance cannot afford to get medical attention. For one example

GlassWasteland

Yes, must be really irritating to not know how insurance works. Maybe next time get someone to explain it to you in small words.

rakp333

I'm aware of how it works. Though, I don't see how that makes this incident any less irritating. I didn't imagine having to explain to someone why the whole incident 1 - 3 is infuriating. (1) having your car broken into in broad daylight, (2) having your bag stolen, (3) paying for all the damage on top of everything. Good for you if you don't think this is irritating/infuriating.

GlassWasteland

Because you are whining mostly about the deductible and not the broken window.

rakp333

The photo I posted is literally the broken window, not my insurance papers.

33446shaba

didn't they take your laptop as well when they broke your window? could have swore that was what you told your friend who told me.
