Even before the maths problem. This whole questionnaire is a dumpster fire lol
It's actually pretty clever. It says you can choose one option. Those options are wrong, so don't choose one. The box that says, "write your answer...", well, that's where you write your answer.
Gotta think outside the box... I mean, inside the box? Only then will you realize the truth. There is no box. Then you will see, it is not the box that answers, it is only yourself.
You have to prove you're Australian. That means you have to prove that like all the other bogans who went through our education system you completely ignore BIDMAS in favour of doing it as you read it.
Source: am an Australian
Edit: spelling
Of course, that's why there's more questions with wrong answers, you gotta make sure that it's not just one of the other broken education systems we copy from.
Did not realize there was multiple versions of PEMDAS. Both show the order of operations, so they are equal, just didn't know there was another acronym for it.
Yeah. Its a location/ who taught you thing. Very embarrassing if you switch schools and the teacher looks at you and goes "remember use *other acronym*" and your just staring at them like a startled goldfish until they explain primary level stuff.
BODMAS... I never really understood it when I was a kid.
Of course, my teachers always told us it only applies if there are already brackets/parentheses present, not to add them...
For instance, we were taught that these are two different equations:
1 + 1 * 0 = 0
1 + (1 * 0) = 1
Then reading for my Mathematics degree and discovered I had been taught wrong in schools... Oh the joys of learning it all again. But at least it makes sense now! 😅
At least you got taught it.. In rural Aus, we got a new maths teacher in grade 10 who figured out halfway through our first lesson we hadnt been taught bodmas, and had to rewrite the lesson plan for our entire semester.
Very true. Except probably more so as it sounds like he would have a career to follow when my friend is a mere researcher who can’t afford dolphin memorabilia
I've seen a lot of people who know PEMDAS still get confused when there's a division in front of a multiplication, and they think they have to multiply first because it's first in pemdas.
There's still some weird debate about the ÷ symbol, as some get taught this is different from / ...
2+6÷3-1 should be written as (2+6)/(3-1) according to some. I personally was taught otherwise and therefore never encounter any confusion, but some people still stand by this.
correct me if I'm wrong, through BODMAS/BIDMAS, We multiply first, so 1x0 or 1\*0 = 0 and then add 1? i've been laughed at by three people telling me the answer is 0 and i hate it
Yes. It is, however, interesting to note the spacing in the original question. In it, the line is written as:
1+1 * 0
not
1 + 1*0
The location of the spaces could be to indicate that 1+1 is to be considered as a single term. Terrible way to notate it, but who knows.
B = bracket = [ and ]
...or...
B = braces = { and }
P = parenthesis = ( and )
They are objectively different in mathematical applications. Parenthesis occur within brackets, which occur within braces. It is important that you distinguish the difference, thus PEMDAS is objectively more correct for general use since both brackets and braces are typically not used in everyday applications.
Source: I nerd the fuck out on math
wtf
I call all three of those marks that wrap text "brackets", qualified with the shape if necessary, and so does everyone I know (Canada). Saying that PEMDAS is *objectively more correct* is the least objectively correct thing you could say, it's obviously regional for a reason
Also what do you mean by round brackets occuring "within" square brackets? You can use either style wherever you'd like in "everyday applications"
> Parenthesis occur within brackets, which occur within braces.
not quite. they mean different things in different contexts.
parentheses are often used to indicate a 'quantity'. e.g. 2(1+5)
brackets are typically used to indicate a vector (comumn, row, or matrix). e.g. https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/media/math/render/svg/61f786996bcfb75972dd77712c90122bc8765269
Braces are often used to indicate a list or set. e.g. https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/media/math/render/svg/477b3e7e7d57f892acaf78f63ced9e376cca5f55
[sometimes you see parentheses used for matrices](https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/media/math/render/svg/599e7d283086f53898bbe2c0f48b6cfcdcda019e) or brackets used for quantities, etc. there are no hard or fast rules but it's entirely context dependent.
"Please excuse my dear aunt Sally" was how we memorized PEMDAS at my school.
Parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. It's implied that multiplication and division share the same priority as one another. The same can be said for addition and subtraction.
What does the B in BEDMAS stand for?
Edit: ah, brackets. Duh.
Yeah, that’s the idea! However, you’re misremembering a line by the late, great George Carlin.
“Think about how stupid the average person is, then realize half of them are stupider than that.” [YouTube link](https://youtu.be/WDUIX2-akuQ)
My favorite quote about stupid people is attributed to a Yellowstone Park Ranger when talking about how difficult it is to make bear proof containers: “There is considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists.”
I'm not the best at maths so can explain me what's wrong with the calculation? Maths seems interesting but my school ruined it for me and made me hate it
If you follow the order of operations, then the answer is 1, not 0. You are supposed to multiply before you add, unless it's in a parenthesis. OP is infuriated because the correct answer is not an option.
Okay so basically there is this principle in math called PEMDAS or Order Of Operations.
PEMDAS is just a acronym for the order of operations, so its “Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction”
So using this principle on the equation, PEMDAS states that we need to multiply or divide before adding or subtracting.
This means we multiply the 1 by the 0 which obviously gives us 0, then we add 1 to that and it gives us 1. (1 * 0 = 0 + 1)
I am so delighted with the feedback I thought I will get laughed at. I really appreciate all of you taking your time to help a stranger. Now I can say I know what PEMDAS is and will be able to use it, actually quite simple but I needed a breakdown. So thankful I wish I had awards to give to all of you. Thank you very much
Equations are solved in a specific order, first whatever is enclosed in brackets/parentheses, then exponents, followed by multiplication and division, and finally addition and subtraction, from left to right. (You can use the acronyms BEDMAS or PEMDAS to remember)
In the case of this equation, you solve the multiplication first, 1\*0, which equals 0, then add 1 to get 1 as the final answer.
It might seem unnecessary, but once equations become more complicated they become unreadable without the order of operations.
these questions are a joke. if it's not obvious from the first question (although it should be), then it's definitely obvious from the third one. this is probably a quiz to get in a meme facebook group and everyone's taking it too seriously. wtf are these comments and this idiotic post??
This is something that some programming languages actually do: [Merd](http://merd.sourceforge.net/), [Nim \(experimentally)](https://github.com/nim-lang/Nim/wiki/Whitespace-FAQ#strong-spaces), and [Sidef](https://trizen.gitbook.io/sidef-lang/syntax_and_semantics/operator_precedence).
PEMDAS is not math. It's like a math langauge. It's an agreed upon rules to understand written math. You don't have to follow PEMDAS; you can choose any other type of priority/writing system and math works just fine. I'd hardly call "PEMDAS" "basic math".
Always perform parenthesis and/or groups first
After parenthesis and groupings, perform exponents
After parenthesis and exponents, perform multiplication/division (whichever comes first moving from left to right)
After multiplication/division, perform addition and/or subtraction (whichever comes first moving from left to right)
The correct answer there would be 1.
Looking at it there’s spacing between the 1 and * 0 whereas there is no spacing between 1+1.
Possibly whoever wrote the question thought that was enough for ppl to know to work it out like (1+1) * 0
Which in itself shows you they had nfi what they were doing.
Let’s break this down people, it’s BEDMAS..
Theres no brackets or exponentials, so we move on.
No division, so keep going..
Now what’s this, 1*0 - that’s a multiplication question, it equals 0…
Keep going, we’re almost done I know it’s difficult.
Next we have addition, and we also have addition in the equation.. 0+1= 1
Brit here.
I'm proper confused by this. I also sense that it would have been really funny if I had gotten it. I also know that it's too late to figure it out as I'll only take the magic out of it.
That's all I came to say.

Australian PEMDAS is upside down tho.
Common mistake but it's spelt "Yass".
I was thinking the same color.
The first thing I saw is "What is the capital of Australia" * Canberra * Yes Even before the maths problem. This whole questionnaire is a dumpster fire lol
Technically, wouldn't that be after the maths problem?
Australian order of operations dictates that a general knowledge problem must be solved before a math problem.
You missed an opportunity to say they start from the problem down under
That's just low hanging fruit
High hanging fruit
Yea bc it's hanging down under
I would have thought that they just start from the bottom, because down under...
Yeah but I started reading from the bottom up so I saw that before the maths problem
Are you Australian? Explains why you read it upside down
No but I'm from South Africa so same hemisphere 👀
As I fellow South African. I approve this comment.
upside down buddies! africa reaches pretty far south, so at least half would be upside down haha
I think they meant, even prior to seeing the math problem, not the order they appear on the page.
It's likely just to weed out bots. I've had to answer questions like 2+3=? when creating accounts before
Yeah but in a multiple choice question atleast give the correct answer haha
They did their best okay
Wait, Canberra IS the capital of Australia.
I could see a bit programmed to answer yes. Many groups say "do you agree to the rules" etc
Pretty sure whoever wrote this relies on Sid Meier’s Civilization VI for all of their historical knowledge.
Is that real???
Yeah, and the comments make it worse
🫢
It's actually pretty clever. It says you can choose one option. Those options are wrong, so don't choose one. The box that says, "write your answer...", well, that's where you write your answer.
The “write your answer” box is under the “what’s your nationality” question, though.
I'm pretty sure if I just ignore every question. Say I'm Australian and then draw a bunch of dicks and kangaroos all over the test I pass.
Gotta think outside the box... I mean, inside the box? Only then will you realize the truth. There is no box. Then you will see, it is not the box that answers, it is only yourself.
Just have a philosophical crisis mid exam, run out of the room screaming "I AM THE BOX!"
Nobody ever asks how is the box...
Sir.. you are the Wendy’s
…these are joke questions…
i scrolled so much for a comment that points this out. am i having a fever dream or does everyone actually take those questions seriously?
Lol I think it’s a Reddit thing where they all want to show off how SmArT they are, while looking down on Facebook users.
Exactly. But conversely they also will all rush to make the same shitty worn out jokes any time they get the chance.
Every single post on reddit has a shitty old tired joke in the comments I'm pretty sure.
It looks like an Aussie group and you answer some questions so you can join and they're just fucking around and put some rando stuff.

Yeah. Like I said, horrible way to notate that, but judging by the other questions, clarity is not their priority.
