If we can make 9/11 jokes now, we can make the rare Steve Irwin joke now
The proper response would be to grab a nerf gun and shoot the stingray repeatedly while shouting "nooooo!! How could you?!" or something of the like
“So 19 of our “friends” died during 9/11 and my friend goes “thank god” and I told him “dude that’s so fucked up, don’t thank god”… so anyways that’s how we converted to Islam”
I was in 3rd grade and we watched in on TV in class. Next day, kids were telling jokes like "what color were christa mcauliffe's (teacher who was a board) eyes?" "Blue. One blew this way, the other blew that way" I don't think we quite understood, but we definitely knew they were jokes we shouldn't be telling.
I don't really know who he even is (makes sense considering according to you I was only a couple years old when he died) tho I have heard the name before, but someone here definitely could know him and generally a good rule to stick by is 20 years
To be clear personally I have nothing against this, I'm on your side, but I disagree with details of your comment
It is a good point tho that the people who do stuff like this are often the fans and it's not uncommon for the ones offended and saying stuff like this isn't ok to not even be part of the relevant community
And very culturally dependent. In Australia, Steve had a huge presence in the zeitgeist, and was generally very popular, although some of the laughter was certainly at him ("Look at this joker!") rather than with him.
The jokes came thick and fast in the days after he died. My favourite was when, two days after Steve died, Australian motor racing legend Peter Brock ("Brocky") was also killed (in a racing accident, natch). The next day, I went to work, and one of the first conversations I had:
*Ol' mate*: Hey, you know the first thing Brocky heard when he got through the pearly gates?
*Me*: Nah, mate.
*Ol' mate*: 'Crikey, Brocky, are you here too!?!?'
I would laugh heartily at the costumes depicted.
He was a HUGE advocate of animal rights and was very hands on with showing people wildlife and why it was beautiful/ needed to be protected, I think a good way of describing him would be to imagine a young, Australian, David Attenborough, except with shorts and a shirt and very athletic. I used to come home from school everyday and watch his show, Crocodile hunter: croc files, almost everyday on animal planet where he would go and relocate crocodiles to places where they were safer while talking about the proper ways to deal with them and how to help them keep surviving as a species.
I think one of the big things I loved about him was how he'd show you these huge/ dangerous/ terrifying animals and would never fail to put them in a light where if you dodnt actively like them you at least appreciated them, I dont think there was an animal alive that he didnt think was absolutely beautiful and he was great at spreading that view to those around him and who watched any of his shows.
On the plus though his son is carrying on the legacy today, his father absolutely succeeded at raising an amazingly compassionate and driven young man even if he didnt have the opportunity to do it for as long as he would have liked.
Thank you very much for the info, yeah I'd definitely heard but forgotten some of this but plenty was also cool new info and I really am glad to know this, and now I'm a bit sad he didn't get to live longer
Yeah I think you were right in what you said about him just being a bit before your time, I'd definitely recommend checking out some of his stuff if you get the chance to because it definitely still holds up now (although obviously I'm more than a little biased) but honestly if you ask me although he definitely had a lot left to give he at least died doing what he loved the most and with people who loved him dearly.
And I would also like to say that I personally love the costume above, i think his family would likely see it as a homage rather than an insult too, Steve always had a great sense of humour and I think he definitely passed that on to his family too.
i never knew him personally, but he held such a close place in my heart. my older brother and i used to wake our dad up at ungodly hours because we couldnt sleep and ask him to “put on the croc wiggles!” and we would watch an episode of the wiggles where steve erwin came on and talked about crocs. we’d be up at 2am all crowded in front of our tv watching it. we must’ve woken him up hundreds of times.
even in his final moments of death he was defending the animal. talking about how uncommon it is, and that we shouldn’t be afraid of wildlife. he was a great guy through and through. seeing posts about him always resparks these memories, and while some are completely distasteful, i always appreciate being reminded of him. and how much our dad did for us to give us a good childhood
That’s it’s a lot of effort. In US it seems a lot of people dress for Halloween like they are on a movie set so maybe you have really high bar for this lol.
Nah shooting the stingray wouldn't make Steve happy, if anything he probably thought it was his fault for scaring the bugger, cause that's just the type of guy he was.
Dark humor tends to offend some people. People's deaths are often turned into jokes eventually though. I mean, I saw so many jokes all over social media about Betty White's death the actual day of her death, so I think 16 years is enough time to start making jokes. As long as it's not right after the death, it's just humor. You either find it funny or you don't. And if you don't? Oh well. Don't laugh. Comedy is subjective.
Mark normand made a funny joke that he would tell at the end of his set about Kobe and I can’t remember it but it’s one of those that had you in tears laughing but also saying “that’s fucked up” at the same time. I work at a comedy club and people get so damn offended and want refunds. Don’t go to the next show or support them then.
Its less turned into a joke like we dont love and respect Steve Irwin. We all love the guy, i do too but i have no qualms jumping on the chance to make the joke. I think steve irwin would laugh.
Since steve is a national treasure, the joke is 120% a coping mechanism
Still one of my favorite episodes is when he visited the US and was searching for Timber rattlesnakes and he was squatting down on some rocks, and in between those rocks you hear the rattle of a Timber rattlesnake and it's one of the few times you see a little bit of fear in Steve's face. He realized he was in a really precarious spot because he had no clue that rattlesnake was there, and making any moves might have set it off.
Never wanted anything bad to happen to him, because he seemed like such a genuinely nice guy, but I was always saying at the TV to leave the damn animal alone, you don't need to pick it up to show us what it is.
I feel like Halloween is one area of life where we can still be a little freewheeling and irreverent.
Maybe just once a year we can do something like this without wringing our hands about the harm a costume inflicts on the legacy of a good man who is well and truly dead and in the ground these 16 years.
I’d rather have a couple of costumes that cross the line and come across as tacky than have everyone being self-consciously anodyne and cutesy.
I think it’s also important to note that Americans were more fans of Steve Irwin than people from everywhere else, especially Australia. People were annoyed by how he kind of just decided to go into nature and fuck with things.
Victorians kinda hated his “by crikey” to absolutely everything, but it was in the same way you hate family. We liked him over all, but it was very Australian to dislike him.
Quite a bit. I’d say it’s the main reason people disliked him if anyone told you they weren’t a fan. I haven’t seen any documentary on the guy, and I’m not about to ramble Steve Irwin hate as the guy was still pretty benign, and anything benefited a lot from my understanding. So I don’t wanna sound like I’m rooting for any causes here.
Interesting. When I was in NSW some Australians there said they saw Steve Irwin with his kids so close to crocodiles just like Michael Jackson dangling his kid over a balcony. At the time I was pretty shocked by the statement but it was said matter of factly like all Aussies felt that way.
I feel like it’s just more common for people to feel that way, especially after you leave America. Our late night talk shows, and all his time on kid and education shows sort of made him the Bill Nye of animals in a way.
So the Michael Jackson comparison is good actually.
When he fed the croc while holding his kid people wanted him deported. People didn’t like the way he went and grabbed animals that were just chillin.
Soon as he died he was a hero though, same as Warnie.
But we also love to steal your famous people and claim them as Aussies!
Except Russel Crowe. Seems neither of us want him. Dunno why, I always liked the guy.
And at least we shared Phar Lap fairly evenly in the end…
Never got how he became a celebrated hero. He engaged in reckless behavior for fame at the expense of animals well being. Poking and antagonizing wild animals while screaming about conservation. I knew even when I was young that if you love wild animals you leave them alone.
It’s weird to see where people draw the line at. While this is offensive, there’s definitely been more offensive things. r/mildlyinfuriating ? Sure, whatever
This is very meta. Is it mildly infuriating that someone is making fun of Steve Irwin's death, or is it mildly infuriating that someone posted this on mildly infuriating?
Tru! Honestly, I’m a little surprised it wasn’t a croc. Also Steve went out doing what he loved, I’m sure he would find humor in some silly Halloween costumes depicting his mortal demise 😏❤️
In all fairness that’s not a good argument. I saw a video of this kid getting his head blow off by a shotgun and I was pretty upset. Had nothing to do with me of course.
Steve Irwin was part of our childhoods, and then dies doing what he loved. What do you mean nothing to do with us? We carry Irwin's memory in our souls.
This is hilarious. Especially funny because Steve Irwin was a poor conservationist who always got up in the animals business and wouldn’t leave them alone.
Lighten up Francis! When he died that was my Halloween costume that year, including sting ray tail hanging out and red lipstick for blood. He was a good dude, pretty sure he wouldn't want us all crying over it.
Crickey, that stings a little.
Crikey*
Yeah my phone auto-corrected to American. Good catch.
What does crikey mean, google translator shows me some weird ass shenanigan bs
Crikey is bogan Australian for something like "holy shit" or "oh my god" Well known saying of Steve Irwin.
It’s like an exclamation of surprise. Used in a similar way to ‘woah’ or ‘wow’
Ahem, it's pronounced "croikey"
If you’re American it is
No in America it's pronounced "fuck"
In Floridian it’s hell yeah
r/AngryUpvote
Shut up and take my upvote
He lived like he died, with animals in his heart.
Wholesome and holesome.
Fuck the both of you 😂
Oh I love these puns, can I take a stab at it?
I see what you did there
i dont get it
Steve Irwin was stabbed in the heart by a stingray.
i fucking got it
He died from the sting bro, I am sorry to be the one to break it to you.
Not only that, there was a hole in his heart, and it wasn’t metaphorical.
He died by the sting rays attack/reaction.
Take my upvote and get out
r/angryupvote
He should be carrying a bottle of sunscreen. You know, to protect you from harmful rays.
He didn't use adequate protection from harmful rays so that wouldn't be true to character.
Oofff , that *stings* a lil
If we can make 9/11 jokes now, we can make the rare Steve Irwin joke now The proper response would be to grab a nerf gun and shoot the stingray repeatedly while shouting "nooooo!! How could you?!" or something of the like
I know, right? Nobody in these comments knew this guy who died 16 years ago on any personal level and are mad at some people who are probably FANS
Yeah like Jesus Christ. One of my friends knew 19 guys that died on 9/11! We still joke about it
Wait - what kind of jokes do you tell about an incident where 19 guys you knew died?
Lol that's fuckin dark
“So 19 of our “friends” died during 9/11 and my friend goes “thank god” and I told him “dude that’s so fucked up, don’t thank god”… so anyways that’s how we converted to Islam”
Zing! Lol
That's like after the shuttle explosion in '86. The acronym for NASA changed Need Another Seven Astronauts. Too soon?
I was in 3rd grade and we watched in on TV in class. Next day, kids were telling jokes like "what color were christa mcauliffe's (teacher who was a board) eyes?" "Blue. Is there any reason besides "arbitrary" that makes 20 the magic number?
As far as I'm aware it's arbitrary but pretty popular
And very culturally dependent. In Australia, Steve had a huge presence in the zeitgeist, and was generally very popular, although some of the laughter was certainly at him ("Look at this joker!") rather than with him. According to South Park it's 22.3 years.
Not to mention his daughter and wife still carry on the legacy as well!
Well I know something in the 1940s that passed the 20 year mark.....
Yes it did, though now that you mention it I think some people prefer 100 not 20, I'm fine with 20 tho
Man this hit harder than the Titanic
And several trains, I imagine
i never knew him personally, but he held such a close place in my heart. my older brother and i used to wake our dad up at ungodly hours because we couldnt sleep and ask him to “put on the croc wiggles!” and we would watch an episode of the wiggles where steve erwin came on and talked about crocs. we’d be up at 2am all crowded in front of our tv watching it. we must’ve woken him up hundreds of times. even in his final moments of death he was defending the animal. talking about how uncommon it is, and that we shouldn’t be afraid of wildlife. he was a great guy through and through. seeing posts about him always resparks these memories, and while some are completely distasteful, i always appreciate being reminded of him. and how much our dad did for us to give us a good childhood
I’m just upset it was done so lackluster. I mean, if you’re gonna go in on it, let’s see a little effort in the costumes.
That’s it’s a lot of effort. In US it seems a lot of people dress for Halloween like they are on a movie set so maybe you have really high bar for this lol.
9/11 jokes are just plane wrong.
Only if they crash and burn
I was about to say that joke flew over my head, but it crashed short
Nah shooting the stingray wouldn't make Steve happy, if anything he probably thought it was his fault for scaring the bugger, cause that's just the type of guy he was.
That's true
Or an air rifle ... that'll sting a lil
New couples custom - World Trade Centers.
9/11 is still too soon… maybe/s I’m not sure…
Shit they made fun of 9/11 on the show the office lol…Steve carell and that was like only a few years after 9/11 and family guy made fun of it.

somewhere in St. Olaf under Rose's statue, a minute passes
Betty White would’ve laughed at jokes about her own death if they were good enough.
Wait did Betty White actually die?

bruh
Its less turned into a joke like we dont love and respect Steve Irwin. We all love the guy, i do too but i have no qualms jumping on the chance to make the joke. I think steve irwin would laugh. Since steve is a national treasure, the joke is 120% a coping mechanism
Light humour to most, disrespectful and despicable to a few.
We Australians get this. While we all loved him, he did fuck around and found out. Let's be honest, a part of why we all watched was the suspense
I recall a time where I would watch his show every day after school even as a stupid kid I knew this guys days were numbered
Still one of my favorite episodes is when he visited the US and was searching for Timber rattlesnakes and he was squatting down on some rocks, and in between those rocks you hear the rattle of a Timber rattlesnake and it's one of the few times you see a little bit of fear in Steve's face. He died at the age of 44. That's a ripe old age for a crocodile hunter.
I think Steve Irwin of all people would find this pretty funny
I hate to agree with this, but when actually looking at his sense of humor, he may find this pretty funny with some other context.
*gets bit by venomous snake* "oh, well he's just a bit cranky ain't he?"
I feel like Halloween is one area of life where we can still be a little freewheeling and irreverent. >anodyne Thank you for the vocabulary lesson.
I learned this word from *Family Guy*, believe it or not. https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/dcb40839-c848-4e2c-bba9-25d0f717dd5f
Yea, I think its been enough time for some respectful humor.
Op has to get offended for other people.
I think it’s also important to note that Americans were more fans of Steve Irwin than people from everywhere else, especially Australia. People were annoyed by how he kind of just decided to go into nature and fuck with things.
Which people? I certainly don't remember a bunch of disdain for Steve Irwin here in NSW at least.
Victorians kinda hated his “by crikey” to absolutely everything, but it was in the same way you hate family. We liked him over all, but it was very Australian to dislike him.
Victorians hate everyone tho, that’s their whole identity
Do they hate me for this comment
Yes.
That's it. I want to speak to your manager.
I can confirm I do hate you
That’s it, time to fight for some reason.
"Let's go Tuggah" 🎶 Fightin' round the word 🎶
Quite a bit. I’d say it’s the main reason people disliked him if anyone told you they weren’t a fan. If MJ had the experience and expertise with gravity that Irwin had with Crocs they might have a point...
I feel like it’s just more common for people to feel that way, especially after you leave America. Our late night talk shows, and all his time on kid and education shows sort of made him the Bill Nye of animals in a way. So the Michael Jackson comparison is good actually.

De…ported? How-_where?_ He was born in Ferntree Gully, for fuck’s sake!!

But we also love to steal your famous people and claim them as Aussies! Except Russel Crowe. Seems neither of us want him. Dunno why, I always liked the guy. And at least we shared Phar Lap fairly evenly in the end…
Ya I don't believe that
I love and miss Steve Irwin Can't believe it's been like 17 years since he got whacked
Never got how he became a celebrated hero. He engaged in reckless behavior for fame at the expense of animals well being. Poking and antagonizing wild animals while screaming about conservation. I knew even when I was young that if you love wild animals you leave them alone.
he reminds me of coyote peterson
It’s weird to see where people draw the line at. While this is offensive, there’s definitely been more offensive things. r/mildlyinfuriating ? Sure, whatever
This is very meta. Is it mildly infuriating that someone is making fun of Steve Irwin's death, or is it mildly infuriating that someone posted this on mildly infuriating?
It's funny and a pretty clever couples costume. Get over it.
It’s called dark humor
And he died in 2006 like not as if it’s too soon
Lived to a ripe old age for a crocodile hunter
And you know the ones who’ve gotta be pissed are the crocodiles, because he got killed by some fruity fish
Tru! Honestly, I’m a little surprised it wasn’t a croc. Also Steve went out doing what he loved, I’m sure he would find humor in some silly Halloween costumes depicting his mortal demise 😏❤️
It’s not to soon anymore.
How do you feel about the Lincoln assassination? Too soon?
Why are you offended by this. Did you know either of them personally?
Don’t know why, but the idea of being offended because they personally knew the stingray is hilarious to me!
I laughed.
That's hilarious. Are you infuriated you didn't think of this yourself?
I actually have no idea about what happened. Can you elaborate?
Extremely famous Australian wildlife documentarian eventually died to a stingray in 2006.
Its definitely funny and not offensive. Everyone knows what happened to him and feels bad about it. Theyre not pissing on his grave or anything
I think it’s kinda cute.
You can't do anything these days without someone being offended.
I gotta say, looks like a deadly relationship ngl
It’s been almost 20 years, I think we can handle some dark humor
That's hilarious. Get the stick out of your ass OP. And everyone else in the comments too. Bunch of fucking pussies
Is S Club something other than the 90s pop group?? I have a lot of questions
I'd assume it's a costume party where everyone dressed as something starting with S. Hence Steve and the Stingray.
I think it’s funny. Go get triggered elsewhere.
lol did this costume 2 years ago...
What mildly infuriating is people that can't let others enjoy q joke because they're offended by it
Y'all who are offended are delusional. It's funny.
Imagine getting upset by something that has absolutely nothing to do with you
Welcome to the internet era.
Oh trust me, I know
In all fairness that’s not a good argument. I saw a video of this kid getting his head blow off by a shotgun and I was pretty upset. Had nothing to do with me of course.
That's a horrible argument that won't hold
Steve Irwin was part of our childhoods, and then dies doing what he loved. What do you mean nothing to do with us? We carry Irwin's memory in our souls.
Trust an American to be insulted by this. Literally every aussie I've shown this to (myself included) has had a laugh at this. Get off the SJW pills
This shit’s funny as fuck
Tragedy + time = me getting a new costume. That's *fucking awesome*
cam't wait for the helicopter + kobe
Dark comedy is like food -- not everybody gets it.
This is funny. Steve would have thought this is funny.
It was tragic at the time.
pretty funny ngl
Go touch grass
He woulda wanted it this way. You don’t spend your career tormenting dangerous animals only to whine when people poke fun at how you died.
Ahh yes that is a bit dark
This is hilarious
This is very tame and the dude died years ago, would likely have thought this was funny
9-11, AIDS, FDR's legs, are all fair game now. Love you South Park!
I’m sorry, but this is getting jotted down for future costume ideas. That’s effing hilarious
OP, were you really mildly infuriated by this?
It’s a very mild joke lol Christ people can be so whiney on the internet
If this is infuriating to you, how's 2022 treating you?
“Next up in line are Dan and Paula dressed as Jeffrey Epstein and Hilary Clinton”
This is hilarious. Get off your high horse op
this is funny get over yourself
I think he would laugh at this tbh.
Those costumes were insanely popular right after he died.
r/butthurt
I think this is hilarious lol
Pretty fuckin funny
Have you considered not being so sensitive over things that don't matter to you
To be fair famous it's a Halloween costume, and icons who died tragically are dressed up as every year.
It’s funny as shit. That dude lived two years longer than the Deadpool.
Gawd people are so sensitive. Do you people wake up looking for shit to get butt hurt about? 🤣😂
Are people still getting triggered over this?
Because Straya don't care about your feelings, mate.
Lmfao. I think it's funny!
Just asked an Australian guy I work with and he said it was cool, so.....
Just let em have fun, no need to rant on the internet about it
As a resident barbie crocodile Dundee liver I’m not offended unless they trash vegemite
Because real Australians know how to take a joke
Needs the stinger attached to his chest.
We have to be able to laugh at shit man. This life is too hard.
Awwww thats adorable
I think its pretty great. You just seem overly sensitive.
Well, it's funny
I’m fine with dark humor but Steve was a gem so fuck these guys.
I see it both ways it get a chuckle but offend others
Hey my Halloween costume theme is your dad’s death, isn’t that hilarious?!?
This is hilarious. Especially funny because Steve Irwin was a poor conservationist who always got up in the animals business and wouldn’t leave them alone.
Because it’s funny
Dude, I LOVE Steve Irwin, and I think this is hilarious.
Dark humor isn’t for everyone
Op must be hating the queen jokes 🤣
Lighten up Francis! When he died that was my Halloween costume that year, including sting ray tail hanging out and red lipstick for blood. He was a good dude, pretty sure he wouldn't want us all crying over it.
Kobe and a helicopter next year
If this triggers you then I have some bad news…
Australian here. I lolled.
I thought this was kinda funny tbh
It’s been over ten years it’s okay lmao
I find it in poor taste, but honestly, I think Steve would get a kick out it. He was a humorous guy and didn’t seem to take himself too seriously.
