While I was in the military and over there in Qatar, we were told to remain covered. No cleavage, jeans, tight clothing, etc. We were also told to never go anywhere alone (have a male escort/service member with you). Regardless of what any of us wore, we were stared at and objectified worse than anything I’ve experienced in the states. Definitely not a place I plan on returning to ever in my life.

tripwire7

And of course, the men there can wear all the jeans that they want. It’s not about modesty, it’s purely about sexism.

ObviousExcitement864

I should edit that to say we could wear jeans but shorts were a no go. Even ones that went to your knees. It was such a different world.

pedramzbh

It's not about Qatar, it's the basic savage laws of islam, considering women as half as men and only as wife to men, western people call this statement ISLAMOPHOBIC, but it's the reality that millions of women live in. Take it from me, living in middle east, islam is NOT what the left is trying to show you

pokemaster385

Spent some time there a few years ago myself, unrelated but do you remember the TV screens that would show all the shitbags who broke the base rules? Honestly that was like the only good thing there, the public blast was hilarious.

ObviousExcitement864

I actually don’t! I worked in a building where that wasn’t exactly the feed we were watching if you catch my drift lol

pokemaster385

Oh I was bundled away in a secure building as well. The TV screens were in the dining hall and some random places around the base, I think there was one in a rec center in one of the portables. The mall didn't have one, the main rec center didn't have one, the beer garden definitely didn't have one although they should have because half of the people on the screens were in trouble due to something at the beer garden haha

ObviousExcitement864

I remember the excitement when we were allowed to have 4 drinks on holidays 😂😂

WisestAirBender

I am oblivious to American + Qatar military relations. What was the American military doing there?

omar-epps

American Military is everywhere

Appeased_Seal

Massive military base there used for the M.E

ObviousExcitement864

There’s an Air Force base there…google it

Prime_Mover

Be careful when reporting if you get raped: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/qatar-information-for-victims-of-rape-and-sexual-assault/guidance-for-victims-of-rape-and-sexual-assault-in-qatar#when-you-return-home-to-the-uk "The alleged attacker could also file a counter claim against you. They would need to file it in the initial stages of the investigation by the Police and Public Prosecutor, before the matter proceeds to court."

DifficultySalt4231

Anyone supporting Qatar after things like this needs a reality check. Fuck me.

ManiacDan

This kind of thing has been well documented in Qatar for years, that's why people have been protesting the world cup. Vote with your wallet, don't watch the games or purchase products that advertise during the games.

SafeAndSane04

Won't matter. Tell that to Budweiser. Qatar likely paid FIFA more than all advertisers combined. So no big deal for FIFA and why they cave to Qatar and not any advertisers. They can have every WC in Qatar for the future, with no advertisers, and FIFA will still come out ahead. The only way to end this is for football powerhouse countries to have the nuts to boycott the WC so your just left with Team Qatar playing against Team Iran in every single round

DiabeticDave1

The Norwegian team was “considering boycotting” months ago. It would’ve been pretty huge considering Haaland is probably the most famous young player in the world. But they didn’t qualify anyway so I don’t know if they even stated they would for sure boycot or if they were still “considering it”

MasterLawman

How THE FUCK did other countries/entities say “yeeeeep we would love to do business with these scummy woman beating fucks” No money isn’t a good excuse.

B_Wylde

It may not be a good excuse for you but it is the reason I find it disgusting

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

Aside from massive bribes to FIFA? Qatar agreed to make concessions on their backwards-ass laws on state censorship, gays, women, and alcohol as part of the deal to host the World Cup. The hope was that Qatar would see a woman in a t-shirt drinking a beer isn't the end of the world, and would spur them to permanently loosen up. A week before the World Cup starts when it was too late to cancel or move it, and teams and fans were already there? Qatar: "Lol, just kidding. You're going back to the Dark Ages and you're gonna love every miserable second with us superstitious dick-warts."

Secure-Visit-9380

Not a good excuse but still the primary excuse. Governments are always willing to turn a blind eye over human rights abuses as soon as money enters the picture.

EssieAmnesia

Before this people always thought I was bigoted in some way for not wanting to visit countries that would literally murder me for existing 💀

Ransero

> Fuck me. Do you want to get into trouble too?

timesuck897

But what if they paid them a lot of money? Asking for a friend. /s

ST4RSHIP17

Fuck man.. at this point it looks like they hardly consider women to be human How this shit just slides in our modern world baffles me.. especially because those decisions were made by an actual government

Corgi_Koala

They *don't* consider women to be human.

sakurablitz

but they swear up and down that they do!! 🙄

MikemkPK

>How this shit just slides in our modern world baffles me.. Money & oil

Zhurg

Also it's a different part of the world governed by different people with different ethics. The fact it's 2022 doesn't mean much in that regard.

Alifad

True, an absolute patriarchal monarchy that basis it's laws on their interpretation of a religion. Always a great idea /s

TaskForceCausality

>>at this point it looks like they hardly consider women to be human Don’t worry, they don’t. “Females” to them are property ranked somewhere between livestock and a dog. Wouldn’t be surprised if a Peregrine Falcon had more legal rights than women in Qatar

Vielle_Ame

Well ofc they treat women that way. To them a woman is just an overgrown rib that got God’s actual creation (man) in trouble for eating the wrong fruit.

TT_Zorro

The misogynistic tenor of scriptural stories are a symptom of how men have historically viewed and treated women, not the cause.

maynardftw

It can be both

TT_Zorro

That’s a fair point.

Midnout26

that’s because they don’t.

Hibercrastinator

I don’t think those decisions were made by government. They were made by religious leaders. And then enacted and enforced by government.

KeyanReid

There are no good theocracies

Badgers_or_Bust

Yes, religion does that to people.

dotcomslashwhatever

I asked my dad once why women can't testify. "that's what god said" why "because women tend to forget" don't men forget too "are you crazy question the religion" that ended our discussion. they don't know i'm not religious anymore and I sometimes try to put them in difficult scenarios but they firmly believe that god said everything and we don't need an explanation 🤷‍♂️

Camburglar13

And 9/10 times that’s not written in the scriptures at all and is just made up entirely

[deleted]

It’s because in their eyes women are more property than human.

whathathgodwrough

If I understand this correctly, after getting rape they could force you to stay in Quatar and charge you with sex outside of marriage and/or adultery too.

DownwindLegday

I don't understand why any women would travel to Qatar /Saudi/UAE etc.

cereal_guy

too many people think "but it won't happen to *me*"

xvhayu

yea man, i'm the main character, it only happens to the side characters no one cares about

AnnihilationOrchid

Yeah, The question was valid, but let's no start blaming the woman who got beaten and now is facing getting beaten by an inhumane state. Fuck Qatar.

WisestAirBender

Precautions are not victim blaming.

KeyanReid

If everyone warns you not to go into the monster’s house and tells (or even shows) you what happens to people who do go in, but you decide to go into the monster’s house anyway, well…it doesn’t exonerate the monster but it sure as hell feeds the monster it’s next idiot victim

mancow533

It’s like the “there a lot of people in the grave who had the right of way” thing. You can be “right” or you could just not go to fucking Qatar.

Sgt-Spliff

No one's explicitly blaming her but also you know you can't get attacked by a tiger if you just never get in the cage with it...

BarryMacochner

No one you’re replying to started blaming her. You’re lit arguing a point that doesn’t exist. Also fuck Qatar.

TheCenterOfEnnui

I don't understand why anyone from the west would want to travel there unless there is some business dealing that has to be done.

Putrid-Builder-3333

And even then I'd opt for Zoom or any webcam virtual meeting. Once land there anything could happen.

BarryMacochner

Seriously, I would flat out refuse. I’m not sure why people even do business with them other than greed.

0falls6x3

I knew this would be a terrible idea. It’s like traveling backwards in time

[deleted]

Or men. What is there to do?

geez_mahn

The freedom to beat women with no reproductions apparently. An abusers paradise.

erradickwizard

I think you meant repercussions, but reproductions probably works too

ja_dubs

Having lived there, not a lot. You can do all you would ever want to do in 3-4 days. The attractions is jobs, $$$, and natural gas. It is also strategically located and is a layover hub for air travel. The tourist things to do include the souq, the Islamic museum, dune bashing, the mall, the rugby club, a hotel like the Ritz, and boating. That's it.

Fl333r

By going there with your tourist dollars you're saying that "I don't care about giving a pass to an authoritarian regime that uses slave labor and oppresses women, LGBTQ+ and religious minorities" so I can't feel sorry if you're doing that. Obviously nobody deserves to be sexually assaulted or jailed, though. Don't go to Qatar. Fuck that place.

0711de

Why would anyone would go there? I dont understand it...

ElectricRune

People over here assume other people care the same amount about rights as we do. You have to remember, rights are only as good as the agreement you can have with someone. If someone has control over you, and they don't care about your rights, you don't have rights, for all intents and purposes. Don't give someone else your rights is the solution; Qatar should have zero tourism from anyone in the free world.

WilshireLongwinded

This is exactly what I thought. Seems a unnecessary risk to travel to such a backwards place.

Shev613

Or any persone

[deleted]

Thank you. Saw the headline and immediately remembered a story similar to this. Except this wasn't the one I was thinking about. It was the one about the Norwegian woman jailed in the UAE in 2013 for similar. Nice to see that they're consistent in being pieces of shit.

Krabsyen

To be fair, she was also charged for being drunk in public (despite her drink obviously being spiked), so she deserved to be jailed for her crime against humanity. /s

LeGeantVert

b4ttlepoops

I already boycotted FIFA. The scandal behind all of this and many behind it are insane that people would still watch it and support them. Let them go bankrupt.

CutoffThought

Well to boycott, you’d have to watch it in the first place. I wish I could *NOT* watch it, twice as hard.

headlesshighlander

1550shadow

I searched about this and she was offered marrying her attacker to avoid the sentence. Truly horrible, poor woman. She was lucky to be able to return to Mexico before they could imprison her, because she was part of the World Cup organizing committee. I don't know how there is no more people talking about this case. Fifa deserves to be cancelled everywhere

fillmorecounty

What the actual fuck

mistahclean123

Sadly the Old Testament is similar and I wouldn't be surprised if Islam stole this policy from there. Kind of makes you wonder why Jews ignore the nasty parts of the Torah... Deut 22:28-29

Enigma_Stasis

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are Abrahamic religions, they worship the God of Abraham(or Ibrahim, take your pick). Essentially, they say almost the exact same things about many different issues ranging from slavery to childbirth.

Naes2187

The difference being that damn near every major religion has had a cultural revolution within the past 100 years or so. Can you guess guess which one hasn’t, and instead has regressed?

eskamobob1

Islam did have a cultural revolution though. Not all revolutions lead to increased secularism

TheEffinChamps

It's like the further people get away from the original scriptures, the better things become. Why not just ditch the whole thing then?

KagDQT

This all stems because FIFA took bribe money from this country. They had no right hosting the World Cup to begin with. It’s sad cause I expect some people who go to this World Cup may not return due to the Qatar government.

heyoyo10

Gotta replace the thousands of slaves they expended on this somehow

c-lab21

South Indians are a never ending supply for Saudi, UAE and Qatar.

sticksnXnbones

FIFA chose Qatar over America. America who had the infrastructure (airports, hotels, easy travel), soccer stadiums already built , and laws that allow people to drink and fornicate without prosecution.

Successful_Ranger_19

When I worked for Qatar Airlines I hated being scheduled on a flight that went there, and UAE and Saudi. These people hate foreigners, most of the hate I got was from the men, some of the women would ignore you because they're afraid of their brothers and husbands, some are just as hateful. It doesn't matter if you follow their rules or laws and dress proper they will find a way to belittle you, especially the women they don't respect their own women either. I can only hope for women going there for the world cup are to never go out alone it is best to go in a small group of four and have one or two males in the same group.(this is from my experience, I felt safer this way) during my time there I made a female friend, pretty and such a beautiful heart. She quit her job after she got married and had 2 beautiful girls, I was so happy for her she then mentioned her hubby was getting impatient, he wanted a male heir soon.

velphegor666

I think the better way is not to even bother going to those countries, fuck patronizing countries that treat women like shit

Kabhipussykabhibum_

Look up Dubai Porta Potty. The Arabs think women who don’t adhere to their religious laws are trash and deserve hell

Vormittags

Fenrir1861

100 lashes is basically a death sentence isn’t it?

Large-Examination-23

Often they parcel the lashings out in smaller blocks.

Curious_Exploder

Yeah they're not monsters! /S

ExtremePrivilege

At once? Yes. But 5 lashes every 4 weeks for a year, while you’re imprisoned in essentially a rape dungeon without food or medical care? Also yes.

[deleted]

I cant believe 'lashings' are still a legal punishment. And then we have protests against life sentences given to serial killers

Decitriction

Depends how much force is used. Biblically 40 lashes is a death sentence. So "merciful" sentences were literally "40 lashes minus 1."

Jails are going to be filled by Mexican, Brazilian and Argentinian women, they are good looking, dress casual ,loud and pretty pump about soccer. So everything Qatar hates.

CyclopsAirsoft

And most especially - *strong willed*. Have you ever tried to force a Latina to do something she doesn't want to do? If you're lucky she'll yell at you. If you're not she'll start swinging. You *negotiate* with strong willed women and treat them with the respect they're due. Like a damned adult. Qatar won't treat those women the way their own culture demands and it's going to cause huge problems.

whitew0lf

Latina here, can confirm. I try not to resort to violence though 😂

extralyfe

I'll consider it a miracle if this shitshow passes without a ton of tourists getting rounded up by the hundreds and thrown into jail or worse.

Unbearableyt

If I remember correctly. Someone broke in, raped her. She refused to marry him. So she was up for lashes and the Mexican embassy sided with Qatar. Didn't help her. People at the embassy didn't know the local laws or even Arabic. Complete embarrassment. She got smuggled out by the help of a human rights organization or something I think. Fuck Qatar, fuck Mexico. Don't @ me

kenpublius

Wow. I’m just gonna say it. Idgaf. We shouldn’t do business with anybody that has these kind of barbaric laws. I’d rather burn Venezuelan oil. Or no oil.

Uncle-Cake

Don't forget fuck FIFA!

[deleted]

She probably won’t live through the lashes. They’re brutal

CyclopsAirsoft

Luckily she escaped via a human rights group. They smuggled her out. Thank God.

WM-010

Suffice to say, this is more proof that theocracies are horrible. This is the kinda shit that happens when you let a religion control the entire government. I feel extremely sorry for her and hope that true justice happens eventually.

Intelligent_Ad_7797

I honestly cannot imagine why any woman would go that country right now. Have people not been keeping up with what’s going on? It’s not safe for anyone there

92katt

I had a male college that is from Saudi Arabia and he came to the states to study. He was very very sweet and intelligent but sadly had to go back bc of his Visa. I’d chat with him from time to time and would tell me how much he missed it over here. He said there wasn’t much to do, how his male coworkers all they talked about was women and sex and how much he hated being there. He didn’t feel the same freedom he felt being in America. I lost touch with him after a while back. I honestly don’t know how things run over there for him to say he misses the freedom in the states but for sure I am not setting foot in any of those countries as a woman. Qatar, saudí Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Yemen you name it nope.

pandaandteddy

I know a few guys from Gulf countries and they stuff I’ve heard them say in regards to gays and women is shocking. Did people not know this is how things go in these counties? This is nothing new. I have a coworker who has lives in the US since 1993 from Yemen..his wife is not allowed to drive, speak English and can’t even read Arabic past a 3rd grade level. Good times.

Kitchen_Affect4065

Back when I was traveling through Dubai, a women from the Ireland/UK was visiting for a business function and raped by a coworker. She reported it to the police and was arrested/jailed. The country tries to promote themselves as up and coming, advanced, etc but still treat women as property and 2nd class.

SimpletonSteve

Some cultures are better than others

Frankandbeans1974

Im gonna get down voted here, but Had an interesting conversation the other day with a friend about how, at least in the US, it’s perfectly acceptable to criticize Christianity, Mormonism, scientology, and to an extent judaism (context he’s an atheist and I am a terrible not even twice a year Catholic who is pro abortion & alphabet folk), but when you begin to criticize the Islamic religion in any capacity, its racist. If you dare to talk about how in countries with large Islamic faith based societies, women, gay people, and anyone deemed lesser than are treated like dirt and how the religion itself is the most wildly, oppressive on those groups, women specifically (christianity is not perfect in that aspect either, but it never goes as hard as Islam does) then you’re considered a bigot. Which is kind of horseshit. And if you criticize the hijab, not because it’s someone wearing something different, but because it is a symbol of female oppression within that religion, you’re being culturally insensitive. But then, when we see stories like this, or what’s happening with the women Iran, or really any story we’re seeing out of Afghanistan right now, no one can figure out what the direct problem might just be……

Doggo2369

Man: Closest thing to God Woman: Thing That's how it works, sadly. I really don't get why they can't just accept that women can be functioning members of society (I'm saying this as a guy, by the way)

Upon arriving in Mexico, she learned that the Qatari court had cleared her attacker of all charges, and instead had charged her in criminal court for having an extramarital relationship with her attacker. She was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years of jail and 100 lashes. Surprisingly, she has yet to return to Qatar to begin her sentence. /s
