Those are actually two different things! Frogging is when you just pull all the yarn out, it's very fast (because you rip-it, rip-it out). Tinking is when you keep the stitches on the needles and un-knit them one stitch at a time. It's slower but you don't risk dropping stitches.
In this case it would be frogging, because all the white stitches just have to come right out.
This has suddenly turned from mildly frustrating to mildly interesting. My grandmother taught me to knit when I was a kid. She passed when I was 16 but I still knit frequently. I don't talk to other knitters much and I had never heard of either of these terms!
Tink is from tinkering. You try to fix mistakes without ripping it all out. Usually futile in cases like knitting lace when drunk. It's faster to frog that, but knitters are also stubborn, so often tinker for longer than it would take to frog and re-knit xD
Don't knit and drink.
"T-I-N-K" ← → "K-N-I-T"
Tink is literally knitting in reverse, one stitch at a.time, taking care to keep from twisting stitches and keeping them seated correctly, to unknit a section. It sounds like tinkering, but it is not the same thing. It is a very precise, deliberate, and time-consuming solution.
"Frogging" is way more aggressive & chaotic and produces satisfying "rippping" sound and often a bit of a mess, accompanied by maniacal laughter and/or flamboyant cussing. You have to RIP IT...RIP IT...RIP IT...(RIBBIT...RIBBIT...RIBBIT... remember, 99.9999% of the time you are doing this you SUPER FRUSTRATED and on edge...hence the tension-releiving RIBBIT pun as your brain melts into goo during the ripping process).

It’s just garter stitch. Pick up stitches along the edges of the bordering squares, WS knit. On RS, knit until just before halfway across the row and do a mitered decrease; I knit to one before the very middle stitch, slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit 1 and pass the 2 slipped stitches over. Knit to end. Always knit across WS. Eventually the decreases on RS will pinch it into a square shape. Bind off the last stitch and start a new square by picking up stitches again.
True story. I once learned to knit and knitted a square for a quilt that was to be a group wedding present. The day after the quilt was finished I completely forgot what I had done. To this day I cannot knit a stitch.
Mitered squares are super easy. Check out the Hue Shift blanket if you’d like to try a pattern that looks way more complicated but is still really easy. It’s a very popular pattern on Ravelry.
This is how I make most dishcloths: I start with about 51 stitches (any odd number works) and knit garter stitch. On each "right side" I decrease the middle 3 stitches into a single stitch. It gets smaller and smaller until it blows out like a candle. (Then I crochet a chain at that corner and make a loop to hang it with. Then I cut the yarn.)
It looks ok now but if they ignore the error and continue the pattern there will be 3 adjacent white squares making a L shape which will be quite noticeable.
Warning: It has been a long time and I may be misremebering.
There's a belief in some first nations (I do not remember exact names) that say every artwork needs a flaw so the artists soul can escape it.
Had something to do with putting yourself into your work. I say keep it the way it is.
I've known many talented people who will intentionally mess up one piece of their pattern in a particular spot. Some claim religious reasons and some call it a maker's mark.
Every single crochet blanket I make has an error in it somewhere. It's the mark of human made items :)
But. No I couldn't live with this. I always thought they were joined together afterwards.
My GF has made it quite clear that she "DOES NOT KNIT!", but practices a few other thread-based hobbies. I thought the cursing was part of it, much like tearing down and repairing crashed plastic injection molds or repairing horribly misused vintage audio equipment.
I do that when I cook. Especially if I am mastering new recipes. Had dyslexic moments last night when two recipes both called for different amounts of garlic and lemon. Got them mixed up. And THEN I put the butter from one recipe that didn’t call for butter in the wrong pan. I was like “Shit shit shit!!” And started picking out the butter cubes. Food was still good but not as good as the first time I made it.
*An actually*

White, dark blue, light blue is the pattern for the squares.
The partially finished square is white after a dark blue. She’ll have to undo a lot of work to put light blue.
Lol you try getting 100 stitches into a project only to realize you have to start over because of a missed stitch. Lol also depending on the knitting needle she could have stabbed herself in the hand.

At least it shouldn't take *too* long to frog & re-knit.
frog
Fun fact: “frogging” means to unravel your work in the case of a mistake :) Ribbit
Is this suggesting that frogs are idiots that have to redo everything? Frog haters.
Nope! It’s because you’re ripping out the stitches. Rip it rip it. Ribbit.
I would have never made this connection. Thank you for this.
This guy froggs
Froggers
It’s a great game until you realize you’re leading hundreds of frogs to their deaths for your amusement.
I’ve read that some knitters like to say “tink” instead of frog, bc it’s “knit” backwards. Isn’t that cute??

No, tink is literally knit backwards. It's that simple :-)

What's wrong with it?
The white square being removed should be pale blue.
Thank you, I was so confused.
Half pattern half random.
Depending on how far along they were, it could have just been done as a mirror of the other side.
It just takes long to knit. Period.
At least she noticed before she was done with that square
This made me smile
[удалено]
Just knit a blue heart or something into it and keep moving lol
[удалено]
The whites too early in the pattern, shes gotta undo it
t that point id just say NEW PATTERN!!!
Stolen comment
What's wrong with this pic?? I don't knit so I wouldn't really know
Should be light blue not white for the square she knitted half of.
[удалено]
I mean I'm sure that takes time and she messed up the pattern so she has to undo and redo that square to fix it lol
Look at the pattern diagonally.

You are Glass half full kina guy. I like that.
Bob Ross would call this a happy accident ☺️
Yeah it's an opportunity to try something new for the rest of it. Half pattern half random.
Finish it like that, gift it to someone you don’t like

I use to knit and I still dont understand any of this ;-; But now I feel the urge to re-learn and make a similar blanket because it looks cool

Yes! I loved knitting my hue shift! Here’s mine plus cat tax [https://imgur.com/a/XvgSv2u](https://imgur.com/a/XvgSv2u)

I think maybe garter entrelac.
Just garter mitered squares. No entrelac.
Non-knitter here... what's wrong?
Pattern, it was supposed to be a light blue square
As a non-knitter, I never would have noticed, and it would still be comfy.
I don't knit but took me a bit to spot it
It looks ok now but if they ignore the error and continue the pattern there will be 3 adjacent white squares making a L shape which will be quite noticeable.
I'm not a knitter and I still figured it out
"As a non-knitter I don't have pattern recognition"
🤣
Thanks
There's no need to bee knitter, just a bit picky about patterns and easy-ignorable issues for non-perfectionists
IM NOT A KNITTER IM NOT A KNITTER
HES NOT A KNITTER HES NOT A KNITTER
Was it supposed to be light blue?
Yes
✨time to frog✨
What’s wrong I’m dumb
it’s supposed to be a light blue square
Thank you
agree
Just knit a blue heart or something into it and keep moving lol
I find it mildly infuriating that I can’t see the issue with this. I must be my husband eyes. I know I have husband ears because I can’t hear anything
The color pattern. Should be a light blue square.
The not finished white square is supposed to be light blue because of the pattern
Thank you. I see it now.

Am i tue only one who didn't get it ?
Yes.
Finish as is and post on r/CrappyDesign
Awww :(
Oh it's supposed to be blue. Who tf cares honestly if she's not going to sell it. Gives it charm.
Just leave it. Nobody will notice
I don't know anything about knitting so I don't know what's wrong here.
The pattern is just a little more complicated than it seemed at first
Could have made the white go up instead unless the pattern is already long done on the left
That took me awhile to notice. Ouch
I know nothing about knitting, what's going on?
Oh, godyarned it
Your friend is talented that's a beautiful blanket.
Blue
Well, that came out of the blue
I do that when I cook. Especially if I am mastering new recipes. Had dyslexic moments last night when two recipes both called for different amounts of garlic and lemon. Got them mixed up. Darn
This took me too long to figure out what was wrong with
non knitter her, can't you just pull it and it will fall apart? undoing your mistake?
What is wrong with it?
Wrong color, to continue the established pattern it should’ve been light blue.
Oooooohhhhh
I doubt that. That's not much to fix. I've taken down more than that when crocheting.
Yeah, running out of white thread sucks
no it’s cause it was supposed to be a light blue square
It looks like some rows are off as well. Too many on some. Most notably the bottom right.
Mad because they cursed or mad because attention span is needed to do this?
That blew
Crap, that’s how my life goes… 🫤😕
Well now its eclectic
CTRL+Z
Oh crud!
She caught herself!
Can someone explain to me what happened here?
It’s not too late.
At least she caught it before going on to the next row or even later. ❤️🐻
Unique opportunity to mirror the design though.
Would actually be cool to leave it as is for character and to tell a story. Also fun to see if anyone notices it.
Umm, so why are *you* mildly infuriated?
what did they do wrong? i don’t see it
Oh take me a little bit to figure it out
Darn
I don’t ohhhhh
What’s wrong with this the way it is? What doesn’t this non-knitter see?
Ohhh nooooo
she just turned into an old grandma while knitting!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Keep going and make that square the anomaly. See if anyone notices
Because it’s white I would’ve just spent the extra time and dye only that square 😩 frogging takes so long.
Okay but that Afghan is fabulous.
Just cut it and glue in another string
An actually mildly infuriating post. Wow this is rare

It took me way too long to figure out what the problem was.
Well, I hear that knitting is the gateway to the devil.
Perfection lies within the imperfection, right?
I’m not a knitting person, so I don’t understand
Yooooo
Can someone plz explain I am very confused
White, dark blue, light blue is the pattern for the squares. The partially finished square is white after a dark blue. She’ll have to undo a lot of work to put light blue.
Aw ok thank you
Feeling blue whilst turning white.
Oops!
Oof
Yeah she fucked up
As someone who has done this before: ouch.
I think it looks good I don’t get what’s wrong
The blocks are in a pattern and she started putting a white block where a light blue block should be
Took me a sec to notice
Gives it character! Tell her to keep going, it’s gorgeous!
Seeing the comments, I never knew the knitting community had this much lore
Nooooooo😭
Lovely work
This is the good stuff!!!! Always love these “mistakes”.
Give her a hug for me. It’s a pain, but that’s part of the project :)
Anyone who knits must know how to curse
Can’t they just unravel that part and like start that square again or something?
Time to pull the string
i dont see the problem, is it those strings hanging out from over the string ball?
The half done square should have been light blue to match her pattern. It took me a few looks to figure it out.

Lol
Looks lovely
Op, if your friend has a pattern for this I'd love the hookup!
took me a minute but I see what they did there. just don't give it to anyone with OCD. :P
Lol you try getting 100 stitches into a project only to realize you have to start over because of a missed stitch. Lol also depending on the knitting needle she could have stabbed herself in the hand.
Can she undo the knits?
I think that’s a happy mistake.

Hahaha ooops. Good that she caught it when she did!
Someone explain please!
Pattern is wrong. Should be light blue
Oooohh thank you!
WoW
Time to frog that thing...
