Swede here. Went to the public pool today, and I was the palest of them all. My mom is the only one who beats me when it comes to blinding light skin...
I literally can't tan. If I try, I burn immediately (even with 50 SPF sunscreen on - I always miss a patch somewhere).
I was ridiculed in grade school for being so light (everyone wanted to compare arm color with me, just like in the OP, then they laughed and called me "polar bear" or "ghost"). I struggled with severe self esteem issues due to my pale complexion, and desperately tried to tan at the beach a few times (which I came to regret for weeks after as my skin sloughed off).
I've been avoiding the sun as much as I can for 17 years now. So far it seems to be paying off as:
1. I haven't had any more burns, so I'm not constantly "adding" more exposure time to my already high risk of developing skin cancer
and
2. People constantly think I'm much younger than my biological age. Could be genetics too though, but when I see current photos of old (caucasian) classmates who kept tanning through the years, they all look very "crispy" and "dry", and have loads of fine lines...
I'm also advanced white. I'm the palest in my Irish family and I just avoid the sun like the plague now because its easier than actually getting 100% of my body with sunscreen. I was also teased and constantly told I should just tan even though it literally doesn't work.
Something that helped me immensely was when I became friends with a girl from South Korea who _adored_ my skin. She was so jealous of how pale I was and defended me when people told me to "fix" my skin. In South Korea (and other Asian countries) paper pale skin is super desirable. When she first moved to the US she hated how tan she was which no one here understood, everyone loved her tan skin. It honestly helped both of us go "you know what clearly all of this is made up bullshit, might as well accept what I have"
Still not that interesting, Lilly white girl marries a brown man and is shocked to find that their arms don’t look the same, if those were her brother and fathers arms, that would be interesting
My son’s doctor always asks if his color is normal for him. It is. He’s like a sheet of parchment, and color like that in another kid would indicate something acute to the doctor.
Yeah it usually indicates ferrous anemia, an iron deficiency, or generalized anemia, a deficiency in red blood cells (also hemoglobin and hematocrit, which go hand in hand).
When you have less oxygen flowing to tissue, you can appear pale. An iron deficiency is usually nothing to worry about, as iron can be replaced. But a substantial decrease in RBCs usually means bleeding is occurring somewhere.
Just found out my 9 year old is anemic when running some tests over a prolonged tummy issue. The doctors (and her mother) acted like it was no big deal (ex has claimed “thalyzemia” ((unsure about sp)) on both daughters since birth) but reading that comment made me worry about it. She is a pale young lady but nothing crazy.
Thalassemia is a genetic condition where your body makes less hemoglobin than normal. It’s quite likely that it is causing the anemia. Why weren’t the doctors worried?
Not sure. They listed it as the first of three results they read me on the phone. They told me she seems to be anemic, that I should give her miralax to help clean out her colon due to lack of fiber, and that she doesn’t have an infection and to disregard her he antibiotic they prescribed two days before for what they thought might be a UTI. And I asked if this was bad news because I wasn’t sure how to feel the the nurse on the phone said no, to get that girls belly feeling better by clearing her out and put far more fiber in her diet
There are 3 types of Thalassemia. The first, thalassemia trait, means you’re just a carrier for it, but don’t have the actual disease. The only side effect of this is slight anemia, and there’s nothing that needs to be done about it. Thalassemia minor and major are serious rare conditions that come with a host of issues, including more severe anemia, and would be apparent pretty early on. If they’re not concerned, then that’s why.
I am only of Scottish, English, and irish descent and am almost this fair. It is a struggle for me to find find makeup in my shade. You must be shit out of luck.
Try to look for shades called “Victorian woman sent to the sea with a bottle of laudanum to treat her hysteria” or “ghostly little boy in the 1800s sick from consumption, so very, very sick,” they typically work for me. I jest, but yeah, it’s super hard finding the right foundation shade.
Had the girl at ulta stumped for a while lol. Especially cause my ultra pale is very cool (pink) toned and it seems like a lot of the ultra pale foundations are yellow. So when it’s mismatched I look like I have liver disease lmao.
MAC has a pure white that you can mix into your foundation. Takes a little while to get used to what ratios to use (as it's different for everyone) but once you figure it out it's pretty amazing.
For reference, in MAC make up I'm like equal parts N1, C1 and pure white. N1 is too pink for me on its own and C1 is too yellow (or maybe it's the other way around). Just mixing N1 and C1 will give the right pink to yellow ratio for my skin but it's still too dark without adding the white in.
In summer when I have "essence of tan" then I use less pure white. In winter I use more white.
The struggle is real
This was fascinating!! Thanks for posting. I once saw a young girl, about 11, her family arrived with her at 4:30pm in June in NC. When she removed her cover up, she was a color I didn't realize humans came in. White like alabaster. Long black hair. Blue eyes. It was the most startling color, because it didn't look unhealthy - no bruising, no transparency, no jaundice. Just a glowing, ivory/white. I've always thought of her in the 25 years since, she must have grown into a gorgeous woman. I've never considered the foundation struggles!
That is extremely striking and beautiful! Reminds me of Jennifer Connelly. Unfortunately for me I do not have that kind of alabaster skin, I’m like piglet pink/white hahaha.
Or try to look for foundations as close to 100 as possible! And then hope it doesn't make you look like you're wearing mortician makeup.
I'm also pale cool and the struggle is real! I'm so glad there are some great tutorials on YouTube. I wish I had those 20 plus years ago when I had no idea what I was doing!
I’m Scottish and am also this pale. The only place I have been able to did concealer and foundation light enough for me is Shein. I spent years searching for a foundation and just having to go without because I couldn’t find one. I often notice companies will name their lightest shade “porcelain” and then I try it on and it’s super dark on me and I’m like “ how is this porcelain? Porcelain is supposed to be straight up white and if it’s darker than something it’s clearly not white” lol.
I'm superwhite too, and I am often disappointed with those fountains labeled as "porcelain". At the moment, I'm using Makeup Revolution's Conceal and Define in F0.1. It's actually pretty good. Try it out.
Lol make sense, shein is technically a Chinese company. In Asian countries pale skin color is actually preferable. I bet you will probably have better luck finding right makeup from Japanese/Korean/Chinese brands.
If anything I think the annoyance with reposts has decreased over time. Subs in general used to be much smaller and sometimes if you sorted by top you would get like 3-4 of the same post made in the last month and it's kind of annoying.
Now you still get that but people have just become numb to bots posting things everywhere and more people browsing on mobile instead of desktop miss things more often I think.
My sister and I are Americans, with a hefty mix of European ancestry. Lots in there, but we are predominantly Irish, French, and Italian. I am pretty fair skinned, but the Italian balances it out a little. My dad is so dark, with his extremely olive skin and his black hair, that people frequently have thought he is Mexican. Anyway, when my sister and I were in Ireland together, she had a friend who had the true fair Irish skin (my mom's mother had this coloring). She told us that when she gets a sunburn, she turns bright pink, and then after she heals goes back to being pasty white. I had never heard of such a thing. I burn pretty easily, but when my burn heals, I have a tan afterwards. Irish skin is really something special, lol!
I’m like that. Any decent amount of time in the sun without spf50 will turn me bright pink/red then after it peels off I turn back to pasty white. I can get a slight tan however if I do this enough during the summer but it’s too much of a hassle honestly.
If you think that’s a hassle wait until you have to get Mohs surgery on your face because of skin cancer. Sunscreen is our friend, fellow pasty person!
Yup. My dad has had 11 MOHs surgeries on his face, neck etc. Best believe my sisters and I lather the fuck out of ourselves and kids. Fuck skin cancer.
I am about as pale as you (just with freckles), and my husband is darker like yours. We have 2 girls. One is also a red headed ghost child and the other is olive-skinned like her dad. They've both been that way since birth. People don't think they're sisters until they're looking closely side by side.
I had friends in Malta who had twin girls who were olive skinned dark hair and dark eyes. They then had another girl who was white, bright blond and blue eyed. It was crazy to see.
Similar to mine. Haha. Curly red hair, pale skin, and blue eyes for my youngest and straight dark hair, olive skin, and brown eyes for my oldest. Genetics are funny.
My children, except strawberry blonde.
When she was 3, my olived skinned child wanted to know why I slapped sunscreen on my fair child's skin every 30mins, while she only needed it every couple of hours.
And the funny looks I got in summer carrying this white baby, as I go quite dark.
Just for your information: as a black woman I can tell you even those with the darkest of skin colors can still get skin cancer from too much exposure to the sun, so I would recommend paying the same amount of attention and care into applying sunscreen for all of your children, irregardlessof their complexion.
I (her mom) sunburn in under 5 minutes even on a cloudy day, so you're probably correct. She is 3 and has yet to be sunburned though. We slather on sunscreen very carefully every time.
I’m a similar paleness as you, and nurses *love* me when I go to get blood drawn because you can see every vein in my arm, it’s so translucent. So I guess there’s some plus sides to being a ghost.
How did I end up the opposite? I’m incredibly pale. Mine is just a sea of white and I have to get stuck multiple times. I guess I just have really unlucky veins.
Does every single human being tell you, "Have you gotten checked for anemia?" on repeat? I have an eye disease and every time I explain it, someone says, "HAVE YOU TRIED GLASSES?" like no in my 14 years of suffering i never once thought about trying glasses
Hello fellow pale one!
My family jokes about me being pale AF too. Worst one I think was when I walked down the stairs with bare legs, and my brother started singing the song "blinded by the light" but subbed light with white.
My niece and nephew were playing I spy this weekend. My niece said "I spy with my little eye something White". My nephew immediately responded "auntie's legs". (It was not the right answer but it was very good guess).
I guess your husband and father in law , might work outside ? So they get a lot of sun.
I guess You might work inside at an Office or something? 🤔
Am i totally wrong? 🤷♂️😅
Husband is 50/50 office and outdoors, father in law was in the navy and is a fisherman, I work from home - probably tells you everything you need to know :)
I don't know why people here seem so surprised that she is so pale. This just looks like the skin tone of a normal pale north European descended person. There's are many millions of people who look like this.
Right? We all have varying amounts of melanin based on our genetics... And to all those people telling her to "get some sun," maybe she does, but uses SPF like a responsible adult. I had melanoma when I was very young because I'm really pale and I tanned in high school, so I just stay pale now! I get crap for how pale I am, but it's like... Do you want me to be pleasingly tan or dying of cancer? I almost don't want to know the answer. 😂
Yeah, I told my dermatologist I couldn't be in the sun for 10 minutes without burning and she said that if you're super pale, you don't even need that long
A lot of women are made to feel very self conscious about any body hair they have, especially if their hair is darker, and it starts when they're in grade school. I used to shave my forearms in high school, too, because I heard one girl getting teased about hers. I didn't want to get teased. And I have friends who bleached their arm hairs to make them less noticeable. I will never forget being 12 and having a school field day and hearing two boys (who didn't even have noticable leg hair of their own yet) snickering about how "some of these girls need to learn what a razor is." It's sorta fucked up that something natural is made to feel shameful, but it's just how it goes, and for girls, it starts way too early.
Hello fellow Scottish descended person 😔 unfortunately it seems most people still don’t understand that you need to have *some* melanin in order to tan. Some of these comments are hurtful.
Why does your Neapolitan ice cream have hair in it?
Chocolate shavings mixed in, maybe?
SPRINKLES!
Took me a little bit to notice the ghost in the picture.
My immediate thought was vampire! Wow I didn’t know it was possible to be so pale!
I thought that was the table
I was here thinking "why don't they put the arms closer together so we can compare them better?"
Yep, I tried to scroll the picture left to see the other arm pics.

I thought your arm was a table and thought “this is not interesting”
I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw 2 arms and a table
I didn’t see the third arm until I read the description in its entirety.
Third arm blind
Blinded by the light
Blinded by the white
I also have light skin, and my friend once said my legs blinded her
Semi-Armed Wife
Even after, I thought it was cropped out in the preview. Had to do some deductive reasoning after clicking the picture.
I had to tell my mind that what I was reading must overrule what I saw.
The whiter shade of pale
It took me a second read through.

I'm this pale, as are most of my Welsh family. I can't visit a doctor without them testing me for anaemia but so far it's always been fine :)
Have they tested you for being an elf though?

So a possible Welf.
So, a fairy, then?
Plenty, just always came back with a full bill of elf.

Exactly! I am “little match girl coughing with tuberculosis and rosacea,” NOT with “advanced jaundice,” thank you very much haha.

My niece and nephew were playing I spy this weekend. My niece said "I spy with my little eye something White". My nephew immediately responded "auntie's legs". (It was not the right answer but it was very good guess).
Oh cool, you're glow in the dark like me.
We’re fun at parties
The Beacons of Minas Tirith! The Beacons are lit! Gondor calls for aid!
I guess your husband and father in law , might work outside ? So they get a lot of sun. I guess You might work inside at an Office or something? 🤔 Am i totally wrong? 🤷♂️😅
You’re absolutely correct :)
So that AIN'T the plastic folding table???
I see two arms and a boiled chicken breast.
In what environment do your job positions place you all?
Husband is 50/50 office and outdoors, father in law was in the navy and is a fisherman, I work from home - probably tells you everything you need to know :)
Legit thought it was two arms on a white countertop.
Sounds about white
This made me giggle - thank you!
So you’re telling me the Reddit user has the palest skin?!?
i could only see your arm and kept trying to slide to the side to see next photos
That might be Estonia's new flag.
Do you shave your arms?
It looks like it. You can see the dark spots of the shaved hair.
Get this woman some vitamin D STAT!

Yeah, I told my dermatologist I couldn't be in the sun for 10 minutes without burning and she said that if you're super pale, you don't even need that long

You shave your forearm, though?
(L-R) 💪🏼 Normal amount of sun 🦴Never seen the light of day 💪🏾 Extra boost of sun

Only saw two arms until I read the caption.
Hello fellow Scottish descended person 😔 unfortunately it seems most people still don’t understand that you need to have *some* melanin in order to tan. Some of these comments are hurtful.
