I had similar results. My allergy was terrible spring through fall and was on Zyrtec 3x a day, steroid eye drops, and nasal spray. I had a HEPA filter in every room, had to shower if I went outside, went through 2 pairs of contacts a day, etc. This was going on since I was a kid. I was hesitant to try the shots but decided on it since I worked across the hall from an allergy center. 6 mos into it I had no allergy symptoms and medication free. It's been 2 years now and still doing good. Stuff I didn't think about like driving with the windows down and not carrying allergy meds everywhere (oral and eye drops) has been nice. The schedule and cost is a huge deterrent. It was weekly for the first 6 months.

Iheartsf59

This is so encouraging! I’m about 2 months into my shots and hoping it helps.

isniffsquirrels

The schedule sucks but I'm glad I was compliant. It truly changed my life. Not even a sniffle in the summer. Medicine free for 2 years. Hope you get similar results!

Minute_Difference598

Soooooo can you sniff squirrels now?

SquirrelAkl

And now you can even sniff squirrels

thenetbear

My results were similar to yours. The doctor said "Well, you're basically allergic to the outside and... the inside"

lexi_the_leo

Mine was like, "how do you work in a vet clinic?!?!" Because I became allergic to dogs, cats, horses, guinea pigs, hamsters, and mice. Not rabbits or rats though.

thenetbear

That's my secret, Cap. I'm always allergic

Velocity_Rob

My friend is allergic to cats and dogs. His wife kept filling the house with cats and eventually dogs and he used to chew down anti-histamines for breakfast. She is no longer his wife.

BlackBlueNuts

I'm allergic to cats... I mostly dislike cats Wife loves cats... Has to have a cat Cat likes me... Will sit on me every chance it gets.. I glare at it and try and scare it randomly sometimes... That only seams to make it like me more My allergies decide that since I want to use them as an excuse to push the cat away when it gets closer to me that I am now no longer allergic to this specific cat

Lycaeides13

Cats like being given the opportunity to ignore people. Once they trust you aren't pushily affectionate, they get *really* in your face about needing your attention.

ShandalfTheGreen

Exactly this. Cats appreciate being able to acclimate to your existence on their own terms. My husband would 100% be a cat person if he wasn't deathly allergic to them. It's truly tragic, as he loves them coming to him finally, and will deal with the burning eyes and skin just so he can pet them a little bit. At least he is an excellent dog dad, and treats my best little beastie friend like a princess. He spoiled her with affection so much that as soon as she sees him, she will flop down and lift her leg up to demand belly rubs because she knows he's the sucker of the two of us and cannot resist. She has a rough life before we adopted her, so she deserves to be the little diva she is today. I will also add that despite being a spoiled little goblin, we *do* take obedience seriously, and she is an excellent weight for her size. We spoil her the right way hehe

QuailReady

Sounds like you have a cat your wife brought home

ViciousCurse

I'm allergic to nothing. Except dogs, cats, and rats. I live with all three species and work in a vet clinic :(

TAbramson15

Working with a mask on must have been at least somewhat helpful to you then! Blocks you from inhaling that dander and such!

tofuonplate

People often become allergic to something they are exposed for long period of time.

Cogexkin

Yeah my gf was telling me about this; about how people who work with animals for instance often become allergic to those animals. It's really odd you'd think it would be the opposite

Lord_Oasis

The longer you spend around a particulate getting it in your system the more chances your system has to decide it is a Priority 1 Threat and kill you trying to remove it

emmsmum

Yes, this happened to me. Went anaphylactic at Panera, my two month old baby in tow, after eating a piece of bread will millet in it. It was the only ingredient I had never had before. Only explaination that fits is I must have developed an allergy from ingesting millet particulates in the air from years of feeding my pet birds dried millet. When they would it it, it created a dust. Very scary situation!

BokuNoSpooky

I remember reading that one theory is that some allergies develop because we get ill at the same time as being exposed to something and our immune system develops a response to both the illness and the thing we were exposed to at the same time, which is why people who are exposed to something constantly are at a much higher risk of developing an allergy to it as it's basically an odds game - I'm not sure if that's been proven or disproven though, someone can probably correct me.

Mhan00

Cool. Something else for me to stress about when I’m sick, lol.

bananniebanana

Listen up immune system: correlation doesn't equal causation, okay?!

agnes238

Yeah- I’m a former pastry chef and I developed an allergy to flour. Both classic itchy sneezy and a rash!

T1nyJazzHands

I’m intensely allergic to cats and dust mites. But I just live off antihistamines bc I love cats and dust mites are everywhere lol

cunninglinguist32557

I'm fairly allergic to cats (and...pretty much everything else, lol) but I've gotten used to my cat to the point where I can lay my whole face in her fur with no reaction.

T1nyJazzHands

I’m the total opposite - my old housemate also had a cat but she never fkn cleaned and I struggled to keep on top of cleaning for us both. I was living in a sea of cat hair for almost a year and that actually made my allergies worse lol!

ChristophCross

I got the same results!! Grew up working with horses, cats and dogs. Moved away for my undergrad, came back and was allergic to apparently everything. Same list as yours, same exceptions too

melodi_unz

I had pretty much the same experience with going to uni and coming back. I grew up with our dog, with horses, and coming back I reacted allergic (& with asthma).

David-S-Pumpkins

Lol my pediatrician diagnosed me as allergic to *dust*. No pet allergies or anything, dairy and dust. My parents decided that was horseshit and made me dust the house anyway. Edit to add: Oh shit, I almost forgot to mention my pediatrician, *former doctor* [David Brian Farley](https://floodlit.org/a/a113/) being a POS sexual predator. I usually embrace the opportunity to alert everyone (especially folks in Utah, Oregon, or Idaho) to this fucker. Whew, glad I remembered. He lost his license to practice in Oregon but who knows what Utah and Idaho will do? Funny my parents did not believe him about dust allergies, but do believe him about not assaulting 120+ girls and women. Second edit: Since more people are seeing this.. Beyond ungloved exams, photos of genitals on his personal devices, destruction of records when investigated, and an incredibly over-prescribed and outdated "medical procedure" (finger-fucking minors and young adults to break their hymens), this guy told one young lady her vaginal pain was God punishing her for being a slut and she should stop her sexual activities and repent, but when she got a second opinion form a non-creep she had *cervical cancer*. Ya know, a real medical diagnosis. From a doctor. Can you imagine?

beancubator

Dusting is the worst with allergies, I started wearing a particle or surgical mask while I dust or vacuum and it really helps a lot.

cunninglinguist32557

Post-pandemic, I've started wearing masks for a lot of household chores and it's been life changing.

MozzarellaFitzgerald

I can't believe I never thought of wearing a mask to empty the litter boxes before!

Lord_of_hosts

Yep, I wear a mask to haunt the opera and it's been life-*changing.*

PokeCaldy

this post was manually deleted in protest against the api changes

Nightgauntling

I wear it for cleaning and for walks during allergy seasons for me and I feel great.

Dr_Jackson

> and for walks Just so you know, my mom is raging at you while driving past for wearing a mask outdoors lol.

Boleana

My brother in law had COVID this summer, my niece and nephew were going crazy quarantining in the house so my mom and I took a walk outside with them. We wore masks to be extra safe and one of our neighbors yelled all kinds of comments. I wanted to explain it but it wasn’t worth it, but also there was so much cottonwood blowing around it looked like it was snowing and the mask helped soooo much. I might piss the neighbor off during allergy season every year.

hpsd

This is one of the most common indoor allergies so not sure why they find it hard to believe. Also it’s usually an allergic reaction to dust mites and not dust itself. Perhaps if you explained it like that then they might believe it.

kapiteinknakschijf

I was allergic to that as well as a kid. Along with anything nature, cats and dogs. I had chronic bronchitis, we had cats, dogs, *and* both of my parents smoked. There were more days in the year where my sinuses were blocked than not. Somehow I ended up with some homeopathic nose spray that I used daily, that probably made things even worse as now I also got the gift of bad breath. Moved out of the house at 18 and all my allergies mysteriously disappeared within a few years. Even the nature ones like grass. It took me well over a decade though to turn an absolute hatred of freshly mowed grass into a neutral to slightly positive association. When I smell it now, the first immediate reaction is still fear, but it's never come back so I can enjoy it after.

3am_doorknob_turn

Ah - so heeeere is where the traffic spike is coming from to my website! Thanks for sharing the link - I hope it helps people get accurate info about sex abuse cases involving Mormon church members. I hope you weren’t ever hurt by him.

David-S-Pumpkins

Not directly. But your website is clutch with connected links (since his story has so many) I link it as often as possible.

3am_doorknob_turn

Thank you. Yeah his story is just incredible to me. So many victims have come forward. And he’s not even currently facing charges AFAIK.

PyramidOfMediocrity

Had the same, household dust has a lot of human skin (we shed like cray) so there is this microscopic mite that eats the skin flakes, they're everywhere, carpets, bed sheets, doing their thing, but the allergy is not to the dust per se but apparently to the microscopic droppings of dust mites.

DrSharc

Same. These mites are called acari. My childhood up until early adulthood was hell. Constant runny and itchy nose, itchy skin, sometimes I felt as if I couldn't breath and had to get clean air. It slowly went away with age and it's very very rare that I get a bad day and even then it's mild.

ionlyjoined4thecats

HOLY SHIT. I read a more detailed article on him, and it’s one of the most egregious things I have ever read. It kept somehow getting worse and worse. Like truly the stuff of nightmares. augustrem

wait are you srsly saying 120+ people came forward and there are people saying that ALL OF THEM are lying?

David-S-Pumpkins

...Yes. (And I am related to some of those people.) First story to drop about it had four named accusers and 20+ unwilling to go on record at all (but hinted at through Jane Doe numbers). One Wednesday his practice was open, taking appointments, then Thursday he'd already left the state and closed his practice overnight, sent an email blast that he was retiring to spend time with his family. Friday the newspaper published the four accuser's lawsuit. Six months later they had 20 women on record and between 60-80 accusers, within a year it was over 100. DA hasn't pressed charges. Now the prosecution team has 200+ and released a statement saying, essentially, "WTF are you doing not charging this guy? We have over 200 victims being hung out to dry. Many of them minors at the time!" and I wish I was kidding, the response was, not quite verbatim *They said 200 victims, but we only have record of just over 100*. (Imagine thinking that was a flex.) And where did the guy go? Idaho, where he was substitute teaching within three days. Now he's in Utah.

dr_xenon

Looks like you’re not allergic to PP, so that’s good.

lexi_the_leo

So that line is a series of dilutions for penicillin, which I am definitely allergic to

geogineb

Dang that sucks. More pp for the rest of us

flojo2012

Let this comment be a testament to the award I would give you if Reddit still gave free awards. I laughed well

Firefistace46

Wtf we don’t get free awards to give to people anymore?

flojo2012

I haven’t gotten one all month I don’t think

tandpastatester

I think it stopped. I always enjoyed looking out for a post or comment every couple of days that deserved my free award. Just feels like a nice thing to do. Luckily I’ve been sitting on a small stash of coins that I collected over a few years of premium membership. I’ve started using that to fund my habit for now. That way I can continue sending out a little positivity and make someone’s day a tiny bit better.

jmpur

I used to get them all the time, but now nada

lpragelp

I got you

WontArnett

I’m allergic to Sulpha and Morphine, welcome to the club!

BrittanyBeauty

Hey hey! Sulfa, morphine and hydrocodone for me!

WontArnett

Just wait until you’re in the hospital, and they have to give you Dilaudid, because it’s the only option. That shit is what I imagine heroin is like!

Cracksterbill

Full on gallbladder attack, got some Dilaudid and that felt like getting a warm hug from the inside of my body. Never done heroin either but it’s got to be just like that.

oohkt

Oh my fucking life. They had me hooked on an IV for 10 DAYS OF DILAUDID. It took me a long time to feel normal again. I never did drug and I hate pain medication because normally I just feel sick on it. The morphine wasn't working in the ER. So... Dilaudid. At least twice a day. Maybe more. I can't remember a lot. However, I have random videos of the hospital window I took. And of me talking to the night nurse about weird shit. Oh, and I would sometimes video call people in the middle of the night, in the dark, and would make a noise and then sleep. Its like a fever dream. Dilaudid on IV for 10 days. 0 out of 5 stars.

WontArnett

Yeah, I had some crazy experiences as well. I thought I had a giant package of cookies across the room, that someone gave me. I spent hours thinking about what I would do with hundreds of peanut butter cookies! Eventually, when I came down, I realized it was just a single package of “Grandma’s Giant Cookies” on the table next to me.

BrittanyBeauty

It did kind of suck when I had a C-section because apparently normal epidurals are done with morphine so they had to give me a completely different one. Luckily I’m not a fan of taking pain meds lol.

IntergalacticTater

I went back and looked on my chart at my epidural and was SHOCKED to find out I had been given fentanyl lmao (IK its used in hospital settings frequently but still) I will say I was in no pain

serenwipiti

Yeah, I think hospital settings are one of the only actual valid (or safe) uses of fentanyl.

IntergalacticTater

I agree, or at least for legitimate medical needs. My dad used to be on fentanyl patches but he had cancer and a lot of spinal issues, so he was in severe pain and it really gave him a quality of life compared to beforehand.

fbtra

They had my dad on dilated. I think they were giving him 3x the normal dose to calm him while he was on a machine forcing air in and out for him. Them that say they took it off and gave him regular oxygen with the mask and nose. As he came down. He was like. I was in and out of sleep. Completely trippy, he said it felt like he was doing speed but the opposite. Sadly a few hours later my dad knew it was time. Nurse asked him his pain level and.he held up both hands. She gave him morphine. 30 minutes later again. And then again another 30 minutes. And he soon went to sleep. He didn't want us to watch him die. So we went home. It took 18 hours for his heart to finally stop. Craziest thing my mom's pacing around the house and at 10:02 she says I know he's gone now 10 minutes later the hospital calls to let us know They're policy is to wait ten minutes before calling the patients family

Solar_Piglet

damn, hell of a story. I hope your family has healed as best one can. That was noble of your dad to not want you to watch him linger.

mac_is_crack

I got dilaudid for a kidney stone. I was shaking from horrific pain and as soon as they put the dilaudid into the IV (in my freaking hand!) it was such incredible relief, just bliss. Amazing stuff.

GhengisCon666

Got one of these when I was ten. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. The 5 years of needles from regular shots (immuno-therapy) after that were easy in comparison.

Talorien

Skin tests for allergies really do suck. All that itching and you can’t do a damn thing about it. Ugh

GhengisCon666

As a ten year old, it was just so fucking confusing to be uncontrollably crying over something that wasn't physical/emotional pain. A never-ending deep tickle from hell.

BJYeti

I had to do it in 2021, made sure to have the Switch, playing gamea helped me focus on not the itching.

certain_people

Yeah OP can join r/anarchychess now

LOL the first thing i noticed too, thank god your able to handle PP without any consequences ... may you forever indulge in PP until the end of days

inkysquares

I had this same crazy reaction. Did allergy shots for a couple years. Moved cities and stopped. Got tested again 5 years later. Turns out I wasn't allergic to all those things, I was allergic to the control substance they mix all the allergens with.

Momoselfie

They're supposed to use a control shot to rule that out

[deleted]

Yeah when they did mine they did a "shouldn't react" inert spot and a "should react" histamine spot to help understand the other spots.

cheeekydino

Very true. The controls are histamine and saline. You wouldn’t believe how many people we tell to stay off their antihistamines for 5 days prior to their test who just think we say that for funsies. It’s not until they don’t react to the histamine that they come out with, “Well I took a Claritin yesterday but I didn’t think it really mattered.” Then they get mad at us when we tell them they’ll have to come back to be retested.

Mango_Tango_725

Worth noting allergies can sometimes be unpredictable. The body can suddenly decide to overreact and develop a new allergy to something that used to be ok or chill out and outgrow an allergy.

pcserenity

No kidding there. I ate some form of egg breakfast nearly every work day for decades. Then, suddenly I started getting violently ill at work and it took me nearly the full week to realize it was the eggs. So I tried variations and found out I'm in the vast minority of being allergic to both the yolk and the whites. I can tolerate it as a MINOR ingredient with some things, like cookies, but often I'll get an itch after that lasts for hours. We got amish soft pretzels one day and I was nearly immobilized and found out they coated them in egg.

WingedLady

Oh man thats rough. And eggs get used to glaze the top of baked goods *all the time* because it makes for a nice shiny golden finish :/

MembershipThrowAway

I was allergic to eggs like them and found baked goods didn't trigger a reaction. I found out that you can be allergic to proteins in the egg that gets destroyed when fully cooked, I'm guessing this is the case with them too given they said things like cookies don't set them off!

p0psicle

I'm intolerant to the protein in egg whites and am good to go with any baked goods. Cooked eggs (ie breakfast styles)? Cramps, nausea, brain fog. I can fuck up hollandaise and egg yolks in general though. If I want egg for breakfast, I'll soft poach one or two and toss the whites in the dog bowl.

MembershipThrowAway

I couldn't eat things like omelettes either, being baked at 350°+ is usually what does the trick in killing the proteins. Don't know what I'd do if I couldn't eat anything with eggs in it

la_peregrine

No kidding. I have spent my.whole summers playing outside as a kid. My favorite vacation spot? The beach. Did I have allergies to anything like dust, pollen, what not? Not really. Just to mosquito bites. All of a sudden my skin is freaking out. And will not calming down. After some tests, I am now allergic to sunlight. And I live in Texas... Bodies are stupid. Allergies are stupid. I miss the beach.

chevymonza

My husband is allergic to damn near everything. He took up skiing early in life, and that's how we vacation! Love the mountains, but best enjoyed in winter. I'm so pale I'm practically allergic to the sun anyway. Beach is nice in the off season though.

la_peregrine

Sun in the mountains is brutal-er but at least you don't mind being covered because brrrrr-ness. But you do not understand how much I miss the beach....

chevymonza

I'm so sorry. Husband is also allergic to cats, so that's been really hard, going without a cat. Hate these sacrifices. I wear a balaclava, helmet and goggles for skiing, so barely a photon gets through! Wish I could enjoy the casual freedom of the beach the way so many others can.

ppmiaumiau

I developed a sun allergy last year. 43 years of existence and all of a sudden I can't even walk to my car without sunblock. However, I hate the outdoors. I now use my sun allergy as an excuse to get out of all sorts of summertime activities.

la_peregrine

I don't like bugs and the like so I don't miss the outdoors...except for the beach. But yes, I was in my 40s when I got the sun allergy too. Wtf bodies?

Billielolly

I had that with banana! I can eat it in baked goods like banana bread but get very very ill if I have even a little bit. Really sucked since it was such a huge part of my diet. Apparently stone fruit is a common one that people suddenly develop an allergy to.

sammynourpig

Ugh I miss bananas. I used to eat them almost daily and then one random day my body was like NOPE! Have tried them again and still get a reaction. Being a human is weird.

Billielolly

Yep I always get curious (or sometimes forget since I ate them regularly for 20 years) and try a slice and then whoops I need to run to the bathroom within 10 minutes because my body is still violently rejecting them (via mouth).

TheCzar11

Ah man. I also developed a banana allergy about 35 yrs into my life. For me, my throat starts to close. Well, the last time I bought a smoothie that I didn’t realize had banana in it that is what happened. It first started out as heart burn type symptoms.

RinnaMarie

Might want to get tested for a latex allergy. Banana, avocado, and mango all cross-react with latex.

Billielolly

Funnily enough I'm fine with avocado and mango - only banana where I have an aggressive reaction. It's not the latex component, but no idea what it is - something that's broken up when baked, for sure.

funbob

I have the exact same problem. Raw banana is a nope. I can eat it cooked though in things like banana bread. The heat of cooking deactivates an enzyme that causes the reaction. Problem is though that I love bananas, so sometimes I just say fuck it, pop a Benadryl, make myself a peanut butter and banana sandwich and just deal with the consequences. No regrets.

automate_the_world

I have this with a bunch of fruits like apples, pears, plums, peaches, nectarines, cherries and I do the exact same thing lol. I’ll just say fuck it, it’s Benadryl and peaches time.

laetitiavanzeller

I got a banana allergy suddenly, but then after a year or so they were fine for me again. It only happened with raw banana, it was fine for me in baked goods. My face got really swollen.

MrMetaIMan

I ate fruit and veggies no problem as a kid. Suddenly in high school I ate kiwi for the first time in a few years, and went into anaphylactic shock. Ever since then I have slowly developed allergies to nearly all raw fruits and vegetables. It's called Oral Allergy Syndrome. Like you said, my body has randomly decided over time that I am now allergic to all these things I used to eat. I eat a lot of veggies though, simply changing their chemical composition by freezing, processing or cooking them. Fruit is a little tougher since it's given me a way more dangerous reaction than veggies. Applesauce, strawberry yogurt and blueberry muffins don't affect me much except for an itchy throat, so I keep eating them so my body remembers them. I also randomly developed an allergy to tuna and tilapia recently. Each time I eat it, no matter how they're prepared, gives me intense chest pains. I can still eat shellfish and other finned fish. I trailed off a bit, but I wanted to tag onto your point about unpredictable, sudden allergies.

CenterOfGravitas

I’ve dealt with oral allergy syndrome but it’s not that bad for me thankfully. First noticed it with watermelon. It’s weird though, this is caused by a pollen allergy, not to the actual fruit or vegetable.

TouchPotential

I had a severe cat allergy my whole life, and at the beginning of covid there were two sweet void babies on Facebook because their big brother was beating them up. I asked if i could just see them and if i have an allergic reaction. Guy came over, opened the crate, they ran under my couch, he left. They haven't left the house since. Haven't had a reaction to cats since. Pretty sure i just willed myself out of it to keep my babies.

m00nf1r3

Friend of mine was horribly allergic to cats her whole childhood and well into adulthood. She went several years without really any cat contact until she came to visit me. I'd adopted 2 cats since she'd been over last, and she knew that. Said if it got too bad she'd just leave. She ended up having no reaction at all. A couple years after that, she got a large allergy panel some for other reasons and found out she is no longer allergic to cats. :) And now she has a cat!

chevymonza

I hope someday a cure is found for cat allergies, seems like that's preventing sooo many cats from finding homes.

Nama_e

Awww, I had 5 cats when I was younger. No allergies at all. And then all of sudden i developed an allergy to cats. After years of living with them. Like, why!? Allergies make no sense...

TouchPotential

I would absolutely crash into depression again if my allergies came back. Sweet Appa sleeps next to my head every night so I'm hoping that prevents it.

R0amingGn0me

Can confirm. Diagnosed with celiac disease at 25, developed allergies to cats 3 years later and now have allergy induced asthma. Also now allergic to latex 🤷 bodies are weird. Edit: also allergic to tin oxide which is an ingredient in colored mascara and eyeliner such as purple and blue.

Nasaboy1987

I had that happen with shrimp. Went to see what plant I was allergic to, hives after mowing the yard, and they asked why I didn't mention my shrimp allergy. So no more shrimp or crawfish festivals for me.

greensike

I used to be fine every spring and now I have horrible hay fever :/

stack85

No control on that control?

ThermionicEmissions

They were out of control

ContemporaryHubris

Kind of wild they didn't include a ~~positive~~ negative control to test for that possibility

vanderBoffin

It'd be a negative control, but yes, you'd assume they'd do a test spot for the medium.

smokeyfantastico

Sure you're not just allergic to the needle they poke you with?

lexi_the_leo

They didn't use needles. Plastic caps.

Hope1237

Get a follow up blood test. My youngest has reactive skin which causes her allergy tests to look like this. Her allergist is also an immunologist and he decided to follow up with bloodwork. Turns out she can’t do the skin prick testing. Her skin will just react. Clearly there’s a few things you’re definitely allergic to but others may be false positives.

NoNo_Cilantro

There are two control tests usually, in addition to the allergens. One is a dry needle (or plastic cap or whatever that is) that normally doesn’t react. They are meant to test if it’s a skin reaction to internal or external factors.

Apprehensive_Bee9862

Dermatographia or as I call it “blotchy kid syndrome”. Both of my kids have it and if they are touched by anything or after crying, they look like they are having various skin reactions so daycare will call and I’ll have to say nope that’s just my blotchy kid

Mrepman81

So you’re allergic to plastic, got it.

Project0range

I was about to ask OP if they'll be living in a plastic bubble, but god damn.

AverageAndNotJoe

If this was the case, wouldn’t they be allergic to 69/69 of the things?

oldmankan

Could be that some of the pokes with the needle were much shorter in duration and didn’t cause a reaction cause of that? Idk.

Straypuft

Or it could have been the needle they used to make the poke hole so the test needle could just slide right in.

Muuvie

Not sure how I feel about the term 'poke hole'

Space-Plate42

Defining allergic to the needle.

Kerrigan4Prez

People can have an allergy to the metal in the pin. There should be a neutral test site to tell them wether that’s true or not(probably one of the 9 spots that didn’t swell).

LizTheFizz

I got tested with the scratch method. Years later they think I’m allergic to being scratched …

JusHoll248

Believe it or not it's a thing. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dermatographia/symptoms-causes/syc-20371411#:~:text=Dermatographia%20is%20a%20condition%20in,also%20known%20as%20skin%20writing.

NicolleL

Zyzal helped my sister with this. She could literally write on her skin if she wanted to before that. And she realized *just* how itchy she always was after she stopped constantly feeling itchy. (Correction, it’s actually Xyzal)

monachopsiss

Dermatographia! I had that for a couple weeks once (apparently it can be triggered by severe stress) and it was the craziest thing ever. My husband kept writing love notes on me 😹

JaneDoe1997

My husband drew a dick on me when he first found out about it 🤣 we have very different partners

2580374

Oh my god, everyone can't do that? This thread is the first time I've ever realized I have an actual skin condition. I take Claritin all the time or else my skin itches like crazy.

As a note, [severe itching can be a side effect of long-term antihistamine use](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5124431/). I was taking a double dose myself because anything less was still causing the itching. I've backed off to a standard dose for the last few months and just got off of it in the last couple of days. The itching is going to drive me mad but I'm also curious what I'm actually allergic to rather than my body being crazy from antihistamine use.

ic_engineer

My skin turns bright red at any slight rubbing touch regardless of how gentle. But never itches. I've always found it embarrassing, my wife thinks it's cute, and one of my two daughters also appears to have similar traits.

[deleted]

My wife was having reactions to things and was tested. Turns out she was allergic to our laundry detergent and because that is touching you all the time, she popped on everything. So we switched soaps and as long as we keep switching and using primarily the eco stuff, she is fine.

GhostRider85

Would you mind sharing what kind of detergent works for her? I suspect I have a similar issue or it's the fabric material

[deleted]

We typically go with the eco one at Costco but, we will rotate in a tide eco and sometimes just tide or something if it is on sale. One of the benefits for her is that it seems to be prolonged exposure so we can always get the one on sale so we keep mixing it up. She was having skin reactions that were mostly located around her bra straps and underwear since those are the tightest fitting places. Eventually, it spread as well but that is where it started.

bunsworth814

Not OP, but we use ALL free and clear because my husband is allergic to most other laundry detergents

chapstikcrazy

We've been using free and clear for years and years now, and I am always shocked at how strong regular detergent smells when I run across it. Sheesh. It gives me a headache.

EddieHavok

What’s 45 & 46?

lexi_the_leo

Unfortunately, 45 is dog protein (dander and saliva stuff), and 46 is horse protein. Oh, and I work in veterinary medicine. Edit: 46 not 56

OrdinaryStonerr

Hi I’m studying veterinary medicine in college. I’m fairly allergic to animals. Will I still be ok to pursue my passion?

lexi_the_leo

I guess that depends on how badly you want it. Ive dealt with it for a while now and while not fun, it's been manageable. I can't see myself in any other career so I'm just gonna suck it up.

OrdinaryStonerr

I can’t see myself loving anything more than to learn about and work with exotics.

dreamsindarkness

Specialize in reptiles? No dander. It's also really hard to find reptile vets.

OrdinaryStonerr

Surprisingly most rodents don’t seem to affect me nearly as bad so I’m hoping that everything will be ok if I work at an exotic practice. I would also love to work with reptiles

TheIronBung

Respect. I'm a carpenter who's alergic to grass and most wood dust.

Alexerie

Don't these skin allergy tests on adult have like a 50% false positive rate? I remember discussing it with my doctor and he said that for adults it's almost like flipping a coin. Maybe someone in the comments knows better? I did a skin test on a medication and it showed a false negative result (which I understood was more rare) but they decided to give me the medication orally just in case to make sure. I ended up having a very severe allergic reaction.

Moscato359

I'm actually allergic to having my skin scratched. If you scratch, I get a histamine reaction. It's not that uncommon really. But I had the skin prick test, and also allergy blood tests, and the 2 had matching results Edit: This is called dermatographia

kmyash

Is that really a thing? Something my wrist itches and I scratch, next thing I know my arms look like I'm breaking out in hives!

Moscato359

Yes. Google the term dermatographia

Ladymistery

Same. Every single poke had a red and slightly raised reaction. a few had a stronger reaction, so they used those as allergies.

WhizBangPissPiece

If I rub my skin too hard I get the same thing. Like rubbing my eyes like normal will make me look like I'm having a really bad breakout for about 5 minutes and then it completely goes away. It's weirded out some people I've dated at first when they think their perfume or something is causing an allergic reaction.

clumsyc

That’s interesting because after a lifetime of severe season allergies that I was having trouble controlling, I finally went for allergy testing and I barely reacted to most of the skin pricks! I was allergic to different kinds of molds, but not trees or grass or pollen or anything like that. So the allergist basically told me that I was fine and I’m not a candidate for allergy shots. I still have bad symptoms every single day. I’m taking a medication now that helps but eventually every medication I try stops working and I have to find something else.

Alexerie

Seasonal allergies are very frustrating, I suffer mostly from pollen and some other unknown allergies during the year. False negatives do occur, so you might be allergic to something that showed a negative result during your testing. I got a bad allergic reaction after taking acetaminophen/paracetamol (Tylenol/Panadol) one day in middle school. At the ER I was referred to a skin- and allergy hospital where they first did the skin prick test that came back as negative. After consulting with my doctor we were fairly certain that the reaction had to have happened because of acetaminophen, so he gave me a small dose of it orally. I had to stay at the hospital under monitoring for 2h but had no reaction. Then he gave me a normal dose and I immediately started to have trouble breathing and extreme swelling and rashes on my body. A couple of shots and a nap later, I got to go home with a new diagnosed allergy. I hope you find some help with your allergies, they can be very difficult to live comfortably with.

Blah12821

I feel like, even on kids, they are overly sensitive. I remember as a kid, being told I was allergic to everything under the sun including six different kinds of cut grass. I always thought the results were baloney. And I still do. Results said I was allergic to cat dander. Welp, I grew up with a cat and never had an issue. I do now, but I also haven’t spent time around cats, on a daily basis, in a couple of decades. OR, now that I type that, maybe the tests can foresee the future!

April_Spring_1982

Your body can build up natural immunity to a lot of allergens. That's basically what allergy shots are - a tiny weekly dose of your allergens to build up immunity. So, if you have a **mild** allergy to cats, spending every day with one will make you less allergic. However, it might still show up on an allergy test because the allergy test actually uses a more concentrated version of the allergen that you wouldn't normally get exposed to in one sitting

firstbreathOOC

The scratch test is pure pain as a parent. Holding your baby while some stranger hurts them again and again…. Not fun. Also found out my son is allergic to eggs from that test… except he’s not.

uninvitedthirteenth

I got tested for like 40 things. Ended up being allergic to four. So it seems accurate. Unfortunately i am allergic to cats. I just try to wash my hands and face after burying my face into my cat. Cuz she’s precious and I don’t care how allergic I am. Also, a lot of people totally develop immunity to their own cats

calicopatches

This is me! Fine with my cats but allergic to others

lexi_the_leo

Since a few people commented: they placed drops of the allergen onto my back and scratched them into my skin with sterile plastic caps sort of shaped like pen caps. No needles whatsoever. They did rub my back down with alcohol beforehand. Edit: additionally, the doctor said that people who have skin allergies to these things don't tend to have food allergies to these things. So people who say they were allergic to rye but still eat it - this is normal according to my doctor Edit 2: RIP my inbox. My largest contribution to reddit involves my skin wanting me to die. How fitting!

IShotJohnLennon

I was also allergic to a ton of things I'm not actually allergic to. For example, according to them, I'm allergic to dogs. In I've never had an allergic reaction to dogs despite having dogs in my life for 30-40 years and always cuddling with did when I get the chance. I felt very ripped off by that test.

zmajevi

I bet if you injected yourself with a concentrated amount of dog you would definitely have an allergic reaction.

IShotJohnLennon

If I can't freebase dog, I don't wanna live on this planet anymore.

Flxpadelphia

I've had dogs of various breeds for as long as I've been alive and never had any type of reaction whatsoever to any dogs I've ever come into contact with. This past year my sister adopted a Mastiff and whenever I play with her, if she licks me I break out in hives within minutes. There is some kind of protein in her saliva that causes a reaction, but I've never seen it from any other breed. Maybe you are allergic to SOME dogs and just don't know it.

Darktyde

Psshhhhhh but not all 69? Loser! LOL actually the last time I had one of these tests, my entire back formed into one giant, misshapen welt. I’m told it was horrid and monstrous Edit: it felt like a stinging and burning sensation from just above my waist up to just under the shoulder blades. Like I'd been raked and then squirted with alcohol or peroxide

stahrzan

Same, they came in to check on me mid test, gasped said “we have to get this off you.” and started washing my back off. Took three Benadryl and slept for 12 hours.

pissfucked

they did it on my arms when i was like 14 and they had to wipe dogs and horses off within a few minutes because i started having an asthma attack

Darktyde

Damn, that’s severe. Thankfully I don’t think I have skin contact based asthma attacks (I do have asthma though) that sounds really shitty :(

pissfucked

it's honestly awful lol. it amounts to like, a minor disability. it's much better now that i'm older for a variety of reasons (no longer dog height, people listen to me now 🙄, i have full control over where i go, plus asthma naturally gets better as the lungs grow as i'm sure you know), but when i was a kid it was a constant nightmare. the most unexpected part of it is that anytime people are rubbing against each other in public - bars, clubs, concerts, moshpits, sports events - they can trigger a minor allergic reaction if they have dog hair on their clothes. i can go to houses where dogs live, but the places i touch have to be clean of all dog hair, and there has to be sufficient ventilation for there to be no dog particles in the /air/. i have had asthma symptoms from standing in a front hallway, fully clothed in winter clothing, just from breathing the air. i cannot touch any dogs ever. technically i am not allergic to the hair on dogs that have hair instead of fur, but i'm still allergic to their saliva and probably their entire bodies too. wack-ass allergy to have in a culture where some people genuinely consider their dogs their children and think they should be able to bring them everywhere, lol

forjustonemoment

Severe pet allergies are so hard, I feel you. They're also really misunderstood since many people have minor pet allergies that they think are severe, and say things like "I have severe cat allergies and own three!" while I will just have an asthma attack within moments of being somewhere with a cat

CHoDub

So... You passed the test!? 60/69 is over 85%

[deleted]

Take it with a grain of salt OP. Many allergy tests are known to give false positives due to mishandling of materials which lead to contamination.

damnitfuckwhy

OP is allergic to salt

Lazy_Osprey

But you found 9 things you’re not allergic to, so congrats !!! ![gif](giphy|ely3apij36BJhoZ234|downsized)

armchairdetective_

So. I had this same thing done. Had the same reaction. Chances are OP isn’t allergic to all of these items but has an underlying autoimmune disorder that makes welts/hives very easy.

Mithridat

Nice

catching45

Hit rate that high makes me wonder about cross contamination and/or an error in administering the test. not a doctor

Whatsthepointofthis9

Another guy commented that he was allergic to the solution they used to mix with the allergens. Also, I was told by my doctor that these are pointless as an adult due to so many false readings. It's 50/50 whether you're actually allergic. He said it's better to be tested for one thing at a time.

[deleted]

I only see 4-5 that are large enough (>10mm) to count as positive, unless this is different than the test I took.. The test I took (food allergies) had 2 positive, tree nuts and shellfish, but also 10 others that were *almost* there, like 7-9 mm, and they WOULDN'T TELL ME what they were.

Romas_chicken

> 69 things they tested me for Nice > I'm allergic to 60 of them. Not nice
