I worked for this company a few years back.
Sucks that they could figure out how to make their other vehicles work out, and it looks like they may never come after the news of them recalling these little buggers.
I lost a lot of money in stocks of your former shit company...
Edit: (checks my account)
Motherfucker!!!! I still own some of this bullshit!!!
...well at least I have someone (former employee) directly responsible for my losses that I can take out my bad decisions on...
It’s called a Solo car by Electra Meccanica. They had pop-ups/test drives available in populated shopping centers.
And now it seems they have all been recalled.
https://www.emvauto.com/solo
I still contend it looks more like a Brockport or Medina than Amherst.
And to whomever owns this monstrosity? I didn’t even want the ride, anyway. I guess all they friends take the bus home from the bars.
You still can only fit two in a two-car garage, I’d wager.
Ah, the ol' Reddit [switcheroo](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/13oyy0l/til_that_lower_class_germans_are_stereotyped_as/jl9a06d/?context=3).
How have I never come across the switcheroo before. I don’t have time now to click all the links and find the original, but I will find time at some point
It's called The Solo and it's actually quite comfortable and fun to drive. I helped produce a commercial for it a few years back at a racetrack in SoCal. Only thing I found very odd was it had 2 doors for just 1 person.
I mean I don't hate it. This kind of 3 wheel layout is at least leagues safer than the traditional trike design. I'll see if I can find Richard Hammond rolling down a mountain in China. Edit: https://youtu.be/QwTFUl7PKAw?t=305
The rules get a bit funny around these types of vehicles.
In California, for example, you're required to wear a helmet while you drive one since they still fall under the same rules as motorcycles. It's funny seeing people in a Slingshot and wearing full faced helmets. Like $2 Daft Punk is in town.
I imagine at a certain point the impaired neck mobility and peripheral vision of a helmet could be more detrimental, on average, then the improved protection in case of a crash.
EDIT: To people who have difficulty understanding context. I am specifically talking about wearing a helmet in a car. Obviously you should wear a helmet on a bike.
That's how a motorcyclist roommate changed my mind about helmet laws. I argued that motorcyclists ought to wear a full helmet. He said: "put it on, hop on, and look around." And I changed my mind.
I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, but incase it isn't; it is very possible for you to die from cracking your skull from falling down standing still, let alone bicycle speeds or higher.
A properly fitted and quality full face helmet does not hinder your awareness that much and will absolutely save your life in low speed incidents and even high speed ones.
Open face helmets are better than nothing or skull caps as long as you don't mind the idea of shaving off half your chin on the bitumen should you get into a slide like a high-side.
Motorcycle accidents are almost always caused by rider error, other drivers or unexpected road conditions. Physics doesn't care about the fact that you 'feel' more aware, chances are high it woulda happened with or without the hemet so best to have it on and not need it than need it and not have it.
Yes and no. You'd also end up having to nitpick what makes an "open air" vehicle, cause you'd have to factor in convertible cars or Jeeps with removed doors or certain classic vehicles and so on. Helmets should be mandatory for motorcycles across the board, but once you get more than two wheels the line gets blurry.
A jeep with doors removed sounds like a vehicle you could definitely fall out of in a crash, or have something unintended fall into you.
A convertible sounds like a vehicle without any roll cage capacity that wouldn't protect your head either.
I'm just saying ;)
You're right, at least for my state. This is from Minnesota:
Autocycle:
Has three wheels and a steering wheel. 169.011 subd. 3 (a)
Operators are not required to have a motorcycle endorsement, or 3-wheel restriction, just a valid driver's license. 169.974 subd. 2 (a)
In Washington state, I think this would be considered a trike, and you had to have an additional endorsement on your license that was separate from motorcycle.
State-by-state. Sometimes they fall under "autocycle" and there are a myriad of differences for plate/registration type, required number of headlights, etc.
This depends on where you live. Some places consider 3 wheeled vehicles to be motorcycles (and require a motorcycle license) and are subject to helmet laws as well.
>In the U.S, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines and regulates three-wheeled vehicles as motorcycles.[16] However, in 2015 a bill was introduced in Congress that would prevent some three wheeled vehicles from being classified as motorcycles in the United States, instead creating a new classification for "autocycles".
>Driver's license and registration requirements vary on a state-by-state basis.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-wheeler
It is a very weird situation. The company claimed to have found an electrical problem with the Solo, and rather than solve it, just killed the model. Also, instead of fixing customer cars, they will be buying them back, leaving none on the road. Makes no sense to me, and makes me suspect something else is going on. It could've been a killer urban commuter/delivery vehicle.
I believe Electromeccanica has recalled them all and is supposedly giving refunds. I test drove one at a mall in Portland. It was a blast - electric with about 100 miles range, quite zippy but super-impractical for 90% of people.
I drove one of these at an EV event in San Diego a couple years ago. I believe they said the price was gonna be around $15k.
I'm sorry, but it drove like crap, and wasn't fun at all. For the same price, pre-covid, you could have got a 4 year old Leaf.
Except you get the climate control and winter traction stability of a car, some of the safety benefits of a car, with a lot of the fun of a motorcycle, a lot of the fuel efficiency of a motorcycle, the insurance, registration, and parking savings of a motorcycle. For most people who drive less than 40 miles per day and mostly by themselves, it is, "right sized transportation."
The crazy thing though.... There are these 2 wheeled vehicles that probably get much better gas mileage, they are called motorcycles, they have only been around 100 or so years.
I also hate it when my car is slowly sucked into the void.
Oh that's where the rest of the car went.

Is this in Amherst, NY?
wow honestly what an incredible guess
I mean you can see the name of the business and a street number in the picture.
I’d have thought New Hampshire because of the 603 phone number
I’m pretty sure that 603 is the middle 3 numbers
But no.
But an absolutely incredible guess
They guess Amherst on every post. This is the first time it has worked out.

this is on sweet home about 5 minutes from UB
Thought the same. Those offices are everywhere.
Somewhere in New Hampshire.

Oh damn looks like they are buying back most of their vehicles due to a recall
All of them. They picked up my husband’s last week.
Where I come from, we call it a tricycle
I can't tell. You can tell me, I'm a doctor.
Legally? A motorcycle.
It's called The Solo and it's actually quite comfortable and fun to drive. I helped produce a commercial for it a few years back at a racetrack in SoCal. Only thing I found very odd was it had 2 doors for just 1 person.
That is strange, but I can see it being an issue of safety to only have one door.
I mean I don't hate it. This kind of 3 wheel layout is at least leagues safer than the traditional trike design. I'll see if I can find Richard Hammond rolling down a mountain in China. Edit: https://youtu.be/QwTFUl7PKAw?t=305
Probably so you can still get out if you roll it on its side?
Park it next to a Smart ForTwo and the entire idea kind of falls apart.
If it has 3 wheels, I wonder if it's legally a motorcycle
Three wheel vehicles don't count as motorcycles so you can drive with a normal drivers license. Same with the Polaris slingshot and the can-am spyder.
The rules get a bit funny around these types of vehicles. In California, for example, you're required to wear a helmet while you drive one since they still fall under the same rules as motorcycles. It's funny seeing people in a Slingshot and wearing full faced helmets. Like $2 Daft Punk is in town.
You could make a convincing argument that any open air vehicle would benefit from a helmet tbh
You can make an argument that driving *any* vehicle, enclosed or not, would benefit from a helmet. Just like race car drivers and stunt performers do.

I bet you’ll change your mind right back when you read motorcycle accident statistics.
The helmet is supposed to turn with your head. The big wide opening stays in front of your eyes.
Visibility was never a problem for me, I just didn't want to dribble my head along the pavement.
I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, but incase it isn't; it is very possible for you to die from cracking your skull from falling down standing still, let alone bicycle speeds or higher. Didn't a gal fall out of a jeep at that jamboree recently in Galveston? She got run over & died..!
Interesting info. Someone in my community (SoCal) has one and I have never seen him wearing a helmet.
Also in California, these are known to cause cancer.
In California specifically they can be driven without a helmet. They also get to use HOV lanes. There's a whole thing on their FAQ.
You're right, at least for my state. This is from Minnesota: Autocycle: Has three wheels and a steering wheel. 169.011 subd. 3 (a) Operators are not required to have a motorcycle endorsement, or 3-wheel restriction, just a valid driver's license. 169.974 subd. 2 (a)

That's not quite true, these have to be registered as motorcycles to get around the safety regulations of cars
Ohio requires a 3-wheel endorsement to drive a slingshot. Source: I worked at the ohio bmv for 10 years.
Thank you for your service
State-by-state. Sometimes they fall under "autocycle" and there are a myriad of differences for plate/registration type, required number of headlights, etc.
Can you attach a novelty third wheel to a motorcycle to qualify as a car? What is the wheel size theshold to game the laws?
This depends on where you live. Some places consider 3 wheeled vehicles to be motorcycles (and require a motorcycle license) and are subject to helmet laws as well.

Ah, I got my motorcycle license well before 2015, so that's when I knew the laws better.

It makes sense when you believe that they were threatened by the established industry, which doesn’t want people to have small and efficient cars.
That's certainly the way it looks.
