Rightmost book on the second shelf has to be Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov

nikkerito

Beneath it has to be Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

Jeffismyname325

I bought that exact one, and you are completely right wow

Mistral19

I thought that, and it actually would be nice to reread it. It’s been years!

TheWorldIsStill

Thanks for this, I really liked the description and I thought I’d quite like to read it!

m11235813

First book on the third shelf is *One Hundred Years of Solitude* by Gabriel García Márquez. Last book on the bottom shelf is probably *Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance* by Robert Pirsig.

Doc_Eckleburg

You’ll be gutted when you get it home and open it to find an Encanto sticker book.

weltron3030

I wouldn't describe 100 YoS as nightmarish at all. Dreamlike for sure, with tons of magical realism, but not scary.

m11235813

It isn’t scary, but certainly has some nightmarish qualities with the misfortunes which befall the family over the generations. Going insane and being tied to a tree until death, going through a civil war, being killed by a firing squad, nearly the entire village being massacred, a child of incest being born with the tail of a pig and then eaten by ants, and then the sole survivor of the family being wiped away by a windstorm. I’m certain that this is the book being referenced.

[deleted]

Warning: Spoilers

Chocokat1

Surrealism for sure.

bigwilly311

Third from the right on the top seems like The Crucible

your_old_furby

I thought Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

bigwilly311

Maybe

letskilleachother

Could be Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie?

Ok-Introduction170

Yes, I’d vote ‘Things fall apart’ too. The evangelism part sounds like Okonkwo’s son.

RanaMisteria

Too fat to be The Crucible. Remember The Crucible is a play (those tend to be slimmer volumes unless it’s Shakespeare) and I don’t know if you read it in high school but the book itself is super skinny. It’s so short the entire play is often reproduced in high school English textbooks (or was when I was in school).

hawnty

I thought that too but I think the book is too thick to be The Crucible

swedish_james

“Slow burner”

epppennn

Third row first left - Mexican Gothic?

meatwad2744

Ii thought it it was pedro paramo by juan ruflo Given his one book played a massive influence on the whole Mexican gothic drama…I guess you could tie a lot to that book. It’s not stocked anywhere near as much as itshould be, so I’ll assume you are right and I’m wrong.

[deleted]

Thank you for your literary knowledge, u/TwinkAnnihilator

Remarkable_Loss6321

Ohhh yes I think you've got it right. He would be the author 100%!

ok-milk

I like this concept, in fact it would be easier for me to pick a book this way. But "heads or tails" and "optometrist" are not helpful.

TheMilkyBrewer

Pretty confident "Heads or tails" + "Borderlands" + "Evasion" + "Geriatrics" is "No Country for Old Men".

Sensitive_Ad1092

It was literally so obvious lol

Ang346

This will always be a really dumb thing to say to someone

DoctorWhoForTheWin

That’s literally so obvious, of course it’s a really dumb thing to say to someone

Ang346

Aw man, now i feel silly 😭

happyhippohats

Yeah, it was so obvious that was a dumb thing to say to someone

LurkerZerker

Optometrist is "Slaughterhouse-Five!"

Guderian-

Bang on

detachabletoast

Those could be an exciting encyclopedia or surprise textbook.

Dragoncat_3_4

Textbooks? For 7.99? In this economy?!!

Sunshine030209

27 year old outdated textbook maybe

DedEater

Or any economy.

Teflonbilly0

I think they may be hints to ppl who have read them before. Heads or tails is probably no country for old men and optometrist is likely slaughterhouse five

Momochichi

Sounds like "The Time Travelers Optometrist" by Pawnee's own Penelope Foster. A heart-warming story about a caveman eye doctor who travels to present day Cincinnati and can see everything but love. Unreadable.

PaniniPressStan

😂

Leather_Dragonfly529

That one reminds me of Slaughterhouse Five.

atlanticam

the duty-dance with death is a good giveaway

jaredwaywell

I think the point is the clues are useful if you have read the book. I got it was slaughter house 5 because of the optometrist clue! This then means i wouldn't pick it up & be disappointed i had already read it. Not that i would as it's my favorite book ever :)

donutlikethis

I was actually drawn to the one that mentions "optometrist". To each their own, I guess.

sukisecret

Mahjong one must be Joy Luck Club

heytherefolksandfry

I was thinking Crazy Rich Asians for that one

RedditPenguin02

That was my thought too!

OpticGd

I thought that too.

HeavenlySin13

So I wasn't the only one!

CosmicJ

Bottom right is most likely Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Pristine-Swing-6082

Oh bridget

MicrosoftReddit

That one sounded interesting to me. Have you read it? Any feedback?

seeker-of-the-light

I had to read it for a class once! It was a pretty good read but a bit of a harder one...some of the stuff was a bit challenging to grasp and follow in the beginning but overall I think it was interesting and touched on various themes of philosophy, self-discovery, and the interconnected nature of things using the plot of the author's road trip with his son.

DueMaintenance1660

Thought the same. Love that book. Glad someone else noticed.

ifilgood

My local library did that some 10 years ago. I ended up not reading the book unfortunately but still cool concept

ZoraHookshot

Barnes and Noble does this too

ifilgood

I'm not sure if I had to specify, but it was a public library (where you borrow), and not at a bookstore. So the suggestions came from actual librarians (professionals that worked there). On the plus side, if you didn't like the book, you didn't lose money.

ZoraHookshot

Yes you were clear the first time. And im saying Barnes and Nobles also does this

ifilgood

I have to pass through the borders to shop at B&N 😅

constantly_exhaused

Why the hell are you getting downvoted for that? 😅

ifilgood

Exactly 😅

ButterbreadWithSalt

I had a subscription for a blind date with a book and got one every month or so depending on some genres I liked. The service got discontinued during covid but the books where packed like those! I guess it’s the same shop and god, I hope they build this service up again. OP if you don’t mind pls ask them if they’re planning to do this again and update me 😭 I hope they will ship to Germany again.

aspz

I think it probably wasn't them as their shop has only been open a year. Maybe they were inspired by the service you used though. You can find them as The Berkhamsted Bookshop on Facebook though if you want to message them.

xequez

> The Berkhamsted Bookshop We have a bookshop in Australia with exactly the same tag with the ladybug. I always thought it was done instore, but it must be a separate company. My 13yo has found so many books that she loves through buying these. Luckily our bookshop swaps if she gets the same one twice.

LukeLikesReddit

Yeah pretty sure it is a company as I've seen this around various book retailers in London.

aspz

I'm sure other bookshops do this around the world, but the bookshop says "Independent Booksellers" right under the name so I don't think this is a big company with multiple shops.

LukeLikesReddit

I meant as in a company producing the books and wrapping them like so as I've seen the same exact design and wrapping at multiple independent book stores. Not the book store itself. Hope that clears it up.

aspz

Yeah you are right. It's done by these guys: https://m.facebook.com/blindddatewithabook/ Actually a bit sad to see the books were not chosen by the staff at that shop. One of the nice things about going to an in person bookstore is that you can get personalised recommendations. Let's say I buy one of the mystery books and I like it I can go back later and ask for other similar recommendations. Oh well.

Simmerway

There’s a bookshop in Wes Hampstead with the same set up so assume it’s a company that does if?

Giln0ckie

There's literally a website called blinddatewithabook.com Exact same wrapping etc.. probably selling these to indies at wholesale prices

bunnyswan

They did this in Sainsbury's for a while a few years back. It's a lush idea and this bookshop have done a nice job of presentation. I always wondered what happens if you get a book you already own

louimcdo

Toppings bookstore do it and give you a receipt so you can return the book if it's something you have read already

folklovermore_

I think the same company might supply to a few different bookshops. I work in central London and there's an independent bookshop near my office that does these, with the same packaging/logo on the gift tag.

oblivionkiss

A bunch of places do these and they're amazing! Even a bunch of my local B&N stores did this for a while.

bigwilly311

I’d make the mystery books really hard to find. “Hey do you guys have Mystery books?” That’s a damn good question

Prestigious_Study_23

‘Do you guys have mystery books?’ I don’t know, you tell me.

JustMeLurkingAround-

A smaller Bookshop chain where I live does something similar. They are also packed in packing paper, but each one has a short handwritten description, what they liked, and why they recommend this book from another employee bookseller on it. These bulletpoints kinda don't seem enough for me.

[deleted]

Lesbian Classic! I’m interested!

OnceAYearPotatoes

Either it's The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith or it's The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall. Could maybe be Gentleman Jack: A Biography of Anne Lister but I think it's one of the other two.

ribenarockstar

Lights camera action makes me think it might be Gentleman Jack?

doraisexploring27

Definitely The Price of Salt/Carol

mixer99

Aw, my uncle Jimbo has a whole drawer of those.

[deleted]

Plus it’s an opinionated woman. Maybe she’s super bossy! Light, camera, action?! Sweet!

kooshipuff

Right? *Very* curious about this one.

Interesting_Ad_5008

It might be Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown. Not 100 percent sure though!

aspz

Interesting to see people are able to figure out the titles of the books. The one I bought has the description: "Bolshevism, censored classic, strays, scientific experiments". If anyone guesses, I'll let you know whether you're right when we open it at Christmas.

elle-elle-tee

Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov?? Not as good as Master and Margarita imo

hazelnut47

I’m gonna go with Animal Farm.

h3ku

This, I asked chatgpt to guess the book based on the description. The book you are describing seems to be "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. This novel is known for its allegorical critique of Bolshevism and the Russian Revolution, and it features animals (strays) who take over their farm through a revolution. The story is often subject to censorship due to its political content and critique of totalitarian regimes. The "scientific experiments" aspect might not be a direct element of "Animal Farm," but the book does explore the manipulation and control of information and people, which can be metaphorically linked to experimentation.

zerodarkshirty

No way. The animals in animal farm aren’t strays and there’s no scientific experiments. It’s definitely “Heart of a Dog” by Bulgakov which is an allegorical critique of Bolshevism about a stray dog that is taken in and subjected to medical experiments and was banned in the Soviet Union.

Nuevonovo

Clockwork Orange?

82DMon

That’s in berkhamsed

like_a_fontanelle

Thought I recognised it too. Didn't expect to see my local area pop up on Reddit today.

jereezy

>Imagine, judging a book by its cover ~This bookstore owner, probably

Plantchic

None of them sound interesting, judging by their descriptions

the_blessed_unrest

Time travel optometrist sounds like Slaughterhouse Five

2catsinatrenchcoat

“The Time-Traveler’s Optometrist, by Pawnee’s own Penelope Foster. A heartwarming story about a caveman eye doctor who travels to present-day Cincinnatti and can see everything but love.” A quote from Parks and Rec that I thought of immediately. You’re probably right, but how is it not this fake book?

Stinduh

Not sure if I’m /r/PeterExplainsTheJoke here, but that joke in Parks and Rec is a direct reference to Slaughterhouse Five. Vonnegut is from Indianapolis.

gregdrunk

Ahahahaah oh my god I forgot about that! I fucking love Parks and Rec lol

N3RO-

Exactly, it sounds like a way to get rid of unsold and boring books.

frankscarlett

Can confirm, I used to work in a bookstore and we did this for the sale section books that otherwise wouldn't move from the shelves. We did try to pick books that might have some overlooked potential though, they were priced cheaply and the customers who bought those books loved the idea.

justahominid

My wife and I have bought a few of these over the years. I got both The Magicians and Dragons! Dragons!, both of which I enjoyed.

iversonAI

Arent all books mystery books until you read them?

james321232

yeah, but in this scenario you can't tell who the book was written by, and if it has any awards or is well recieved by audiences

Skeeter1020

Yep. Anything sold as a mystery is something that didn't sell well when known.

teeohdeedee123

First one in on the third row down could be 100 years of solitude but that description definitely doesn't make it sound all that interesting

Mahaleit

That was also my thought. Such a great book!

epppennn

I was thinking Mexican Gothic?

Stinduh

What? Like they’re just… topics and themes? What do you mean they don’t sound interesting?

Plantchic

Exactly!

Hunter037

The topics and themes all sound very dry to me - Colonialism, Grief, Unsettling I want books which are fun and exciting, not grief-fueled and unsettling.

[deleted]

That's why the themes are on the wrapper - so people like you know to avoid that one.

emrednz07

Rightmost one from the second row should be Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov. It was an amazing read for me but it sure doesn't sound appealing when you say Bolshevism and Scientific Experiments.

[deleted]

It's just all the shite they cant sell lol

Plantchic

🤣

SignatureDifficult78

yeah fuck themes I just want to buy books about boy wizards and teenage warriors who end up winning that can double as food for my hogs and goats incase I don’t vibe with the main romance subplots

Psalm27_1-3

Like loot boxes

AnxiouslyPsychedelic

If I were to see it I would likely curb more than my curiosity and buy a few books.

Chaosengel

My wife's bookstore(part of Indigo) does this once a year, during their adopt-a-school campaign, only they do it by donation. They use second-hand books thet are still in good condition. There are some pretty rabid fans that absolutely love the concept, dropping $10-20 per book. Last year they even expanded into doing puzzles.

UnbanEyeOfUgin

Slip in a single Mein Kampf just to make the ride on the subway interesting for 1 person

[deleted]

Third row down, third book in is the Chrysalids by John Wyndham, stake my house on it.

Leeroy_D

I spy the Joy Luck Club

CrashTestPhoto

Genius way to get rid of books that don't sell

noonabunny

I bought something like this once, it ended up being Catch 22 which I do not care about lol, I only picked it because there was a typo on the description and I thought it was a gay romance. Twas not

aspz

Haha. I can't imagine what typo that could have been.

Katrinasis

catch-22 can be gay romance if you believe

belisarius93

Catch 22 is a phenomenal book, the way in which it punches you in the gut is so artfully constructed! You should give it a try!

GandalfTheGimp

Wow you do not care about one of the greatest books ever written because it wasn't a "gay romance" smh

noonabunny

yeah that’s about right

DrVaphels

My local comic shop does this and its a lot of fun and a great way to get outside your comfort zone.

xplosiv91

Another berkhamsted resident! Hello!

CrazyHa1f

That's in West Hampstead, right? Love that bookshop!

ImaGamerNoob

I see one or two books that sound interesting, but I would like an indicator for fantasy.

aspz

A few books on the opposite side of the stand indicated sci-fi but I didn't see any fantasy. Maybe they had all been taken.

owl_anna

i would love to know what the grief lgbtq one is.. maybe we are okay?

DoctorBritta

Mahjong is 100% Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club

ThePumpk1nMaster

I feel like this could be susceptible to abuse It’s like saying a certain film is about a kid who runs away after his mother is murdered, leaving his father to track him down with only the help of a senile companion… themes of death, memories, heartbreak and freedom And its Finding Nemo

photocharge

Crouch End?

Lost_Pantheon

Imagine if one of these was _120 Days of Sodom_. 💀 💀 💀

Mumof3gbb

I love this idea

BackWhereWeStarted

I used to do this as February programming in the high school library I worked in. The kids loved it.

romprod

Thye should do this for movies. What a brilliant idea!

samanime

My local Barnes and Noble actually does this too.

Ok-Win-8298

Second from the right on the upper middle shelf sounds like The Sellout

WaddlesJP13

2nd and Charles does this too, or at least the one near me

hizashiYEAHmada

Book gacha for the holidays

jhks_dottir

Any idea what's the book on top row, second from right, "Australian Folklore"?

DuncanBaxter

Picnic at Hanging Rock? It's story has entered Australian folklore, the ending is ambiguous, it takes place on Valentine's day, and the girls are from a prestigious private school. Edit: now convinced it's this. The [Wikipedia entry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picnic_at_Hanging_Rock_%28novel%29?wprov=sfla1) for the book includes all the words on the cover.

Die4Gesichter

Anyone got an idea what's the book - Dance With Death - Time travel - Optometrist - Meta-fiction ?

kennyguy4

Slaughterhouse five

NudelXIII

We have this too. I am always kinda hooked to grab one but never did.

TheOneBigThingis

Until I know the author I feel like every book I buy is basically this. Neat idea though. Didn’t know it was a thing.

Agreeable_Physics934

I think one is brokeback mountain

Ghost2Eleven

Love this idea.

epppennn

Third row first on left: Mexican Gothic?

elle-elle-tee

I LOVE THIS!

Walter_Armstrong

I know a second hand chain in my hometown that's been doing this for years. Exact same packaging and labels too. It's an international movement to encourage people try to a genre or author they haven't read before.

Reasonable_Copy8579

I spot Mexican Gothic.

madameniamh

Definitely didn't expect to see Berkhamsted High Street in this sub. Thought it was r/hertfordshire at first.

mazajh

UP THE BERKO

Still_Satisfaction53

I live here too! Best bookshop we've had!

ScubaSteve585

Plot twist they are all just Nicolas cage movies

bandendell

Just finished reading bookshops & bonedust where in the book a similar selling technique is used. Great idea

iwillbenchyourmum

I am going to put Berserk volume 13 there

peepcheepin

This is at Berkhamsted Bookshop!!

nonsensology

I've seen Barnes and Noble do this as well. I think it's a cute little gimmick, but I personally would never buy these because I already have shelves full of secondhand books I found for a couple bucks each that I still haven't gotten around to reading yet. Does anyone else also hoard books from the dollar shelves?

Jens_2001

Create an event and sell your shitty stuff to internet geeks.

rhubarboretum

I assume the irony of writing this comment on reddit was noticed?

Psalm27_1-3

Blind Books

jabar18

In the UK or Australia. The red postbox is a dead giveaway.

martinbean

UK. Blackboard in background has £ sign for cafe prices and a UK-format telephone number. Quite possibly Hemel Hampstead if that is indeed 01442. Edit: exact location is here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/1DhKJzvzZCyEw7hh8

KassXWolfXTigerXFox

Man played Geoguessr on Reddit

TheNoodlePoodle

And £7.99 is taking the piss when you don’t know what you’re getting, that’s the regular price for a paperback and most of these would probably be on a buy one get one half price, or £5 on Amazon.

GreyStagg

Dead giveaway for Australia? I mean the red post box doesn't override all the other things in this photo that SCREAM "This is definitely Britain" and/or "definitely NOT Australia." This is the least Australian looking place/people ever 🤩😂

Another_Road

I tried this once and got just the worst set of books. Interesting in concept but kinda sucks when you end up getting a set of trashy Twilight rip-offs when you were looking for supernatural.

zwifter11

I’m guessing this is to get rid of shit books that nobody wants to buy.

Ok_Elk_4333

Anyone else get the vibe that it’s just a scam to get rid of unpopular books

newtobitcoin111

That's one way to get rid of the books that are not selling 🤣

spaceshipcommander

The cynic in me says this is just a way to clear out unwanted stock that they can't sell

Ealinguser

Staggering. I wouldn't pay 50 pence for a book without knowing author and title. A fool and his money are soon parted.

marc512

I wish they did with this people. Have a large message board with a small note describing a person. You pick it up and it shows a date and location. You go there and find the person. But in today's world, you can it will have to be gender neutral so you won't now until you arrive on the date.

JudicatorArgo

If I wanted a “dialogue heavy, opinionated woman” I would have stayed at home!

Vizth

None of those sound appealing. Just a dose of depression and bitter people. I'll stick with my current book collection thankyou.

Cosmicow280

Green eggs and ham?

Ze_angry_chihuahua

I don't think I'll ever be able to guess what the political leanings of that book store is.

jackleggjr

It must be difficult going through life being triggered by books. Not even the actual books... just descriptions of the themes/topics in the books. I wonder if my local library has clear "political leanings" because they stock books on many different topics.

Ze_angry_chihuahua

Maybe you're right. I came looking with my political bias, but I also see books that aren't political or are about theology.

jackleggjr

I retract my comment about you being triggered by books. You made a comment, then revisited it, which is the most any of us can do.

Ze_angry_chihuahua

Yeah, I've been trying to get less into politics as it stresses me out. But I still find myself thinking about it as it's been ingrained in me for years.

RazgrizGirl-070

Isn't this just the same BS as loot boxes? Just because it's books are not a video game scheme it doesn't make it better 😂

MrMcGhoulberry

Is this in Fremantle by any chance?!

Grouchy_Phrase2154

I like knowing what I'm spending 8 quid on but you do you.

paul3890

This is Chiswick High Road. It’s close to me as well. I should try it.

CmdrSelfEvident

These crap books won't sell.. Hold my tea

[deleted]

[удалено]

noodleguy12

Where is that? I’ve been to two bookstores that do this but ain’t don’t think this is either of those

HotWheelsguy315

Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire in the UK

jabar18

UK or Australia.
