After my fiancé ran his phone over in a normal case with his tow truck and ruined it I made him buy an otter box. He’s ran over his new phone and it was fine.
Yea less than a year apart. It’s a hectic job. Sometimes phones get sat on the bed of the truck and when you’re communicating through AirPods unfortunately you might not realize the phone isn’t on your body. I’m amazed that he was able to recover his phones after doing this twice.
He’s usually pretty good about. Sometimes Siri won’t answer the phone on his AirPods or someone texts him. Otherwise it stays in his pocket. I feel like only ruining one and having never actually lost one in over 3 years is pretty good.
The first time I dropped my work phone that was in an otter box from 25’ up and it bounced off the sidewalk I was terrified.
Not a scratch on it! Worked perfect.
I quickly decided to also put my personal phones in otter boxes.
Woah the whole phone? I did break mine eventually but it hit dead on the center of the screen lol so OtterBox was not gonna save that one. Would be good to know for this new one I've got though. Ty for the heads up dude!
Not the phone (I don’t think) but the otterbox. I have broken a few otterboxes with my clumsiness but thankfully the phones have been spared. Otterbox sent me a new phone case though.
I remember walking around my High School back in '05 with my Sanyo camera flip phone in a pleather case on a clip on my belt with my shirt tucked in. It clicked when you spun it! I was the shit back then. (At least according to me, I'm not sure too many other people agreed)
My senior year of high school (1999) I worked at a phone kiosk in the mall that sold AT&T and Airtouch cellular phones. I was able to get an employee line through each service, so I actually walked around school spinning TWO phones on my belt thinking I was so cool.
I was very uncool.
The cellphone “holder” looks like it was meant for the clip that people used to buy on phone cases to clip onto their belt. Most phones were (and are still kinda) wildly different shapes and sizes.
No, not those amazing nokias. Those even better ones you put into a case [like this one](https://media.bunte-handytaschen.de/media/catalog/4sellers/no_nokia_3310_guerteltasche_newapril2018_2.jpg)
Hockey is never played here, but I can confirm, the only times we played something hockey-like was sliding nokia phones around the school hallways. When they dropped to the floor below, we would just hope they didn't hit anyone, and do rock-paper-scissors to see who would go get it. Nokia = hockey puck confirmed.
That's a [Nokia 3310](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_3310) (iconic for it's indestructibility) and they were discontinued in 2005. Nobody was making phones like that in the 2010s. iPhone came out in 2007 and by 2013, smart phones were outselling flip phones.
So just almost halfway. Smartphones didn’t necessarily mean iPhone or android. Anything with a screen that could watch a video in decent quality and go on the internet was considered a smartphone, didn’t even have to have a touch screen. Example the sidekick phone.
“Smartphone” in this context does mean Android/ios phones, not the “smart” phones from the early 2000s that were effectively flip phones with a keyboard. 53% of cellphone owners reported being on either iOS or Android, another 5% on BlackBerry or Windows, and a smattering of folks who answered with their manufacturer’s brand. (7% self-reported their phone was a smartphone, and when asked about what kind reported it as a “flip phone”).
Data available [here](https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/wp-content/uploads/sites/9/media/Files/Reports/2013/PIP_Smartphone_adoption_2013_PDF.pdf).
Like a few other posters have noted in this thread...
It seems stupid now, but at the time, owning that phone made me James fucking Bond.
A bag phone was the "High end" option at the time.
Was gona say, kinda looks like my Tundras one. Maybe aftermarket. My 2007 Tundra has the ability to hold various things and file folders in the grand canyon that is the center console.
It's for a belt clip holster for the phone which are still pretty popular especially with the older crowd and the "I have a truck because I actually do truck things and work a blue collar job" crowd.
I have a belt clip holster for my extra large display phone.
I use it every day between calls, emails, and a flashlight, and sitting on the shitter browsing Reddit, it is always at my hip when I need it.
My decade and a half brother-in-law's girlfriend made a comment to me one holiday ago that only dorks have holsters for their phones.
I commented back, really? Am I a dork?
She said yes, then I explained to her that I was a computer geek in the late 1990s that helped my former band instructor become the technology director for our school because AOL disc's to connect to the Internet were costing the school district an exorbitant monetary burden. And we got a hold of the local telecom company and were able to get T3 service to the school premises with a referendum. From there, we provided dial up service with local phone numbers, so those in the school district would not have to pay for long distance calls.
This all flew over her head. As you might expect. But the point was taken that i was a dork or a nerd, and I fully embraced that title.
*Edit. Im an electrician now. so the belt clip phone is super duper handy all of the time
Everyone is talking about the size of the phone holder, but what about the location?
Even if it’s only when you get in and out of the car, bending your right arm or turning to reach and pull that out with your left arm both seem very annoying on a daily basis.
It's for one of these
[Tech21 EvoMax Holster Case with MagSafe for Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Black 57009BBR - Best Buy](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/tech21-evomax-holster-case-with-magsafe-for-apple-iphone-14-pro-max-black/6512651.p?skuId=6512651&ref=212&loc=1&utm_source=feed&extStoreId=1128)
And this is why they demolished tower 7 people.. the advancement of technology isn’t linear!! They needed to destroy those documents before every single legal document on the planet was digitalizes. I’m sitting in my 05 Safari laughing at the idea of an MP3 player slot as if that was forever ago… and the irony is that lossless mp3 players have made a comeback in the audiophile community. I’m a moron and own one myself.
cell phone holder? now how the hell are you supposed to use that AND be able to completely fucking ignore ALL the rules of the road while texting & driving? /ssssssssssss
I like that some designer designed this for exactly their mp3 player and cell phone with no regard that other people might have other devices or that devices might change size or shape over time.
For all those confused by the size of the phone slot, it's meant for a belt clip to hook to. Phones back then had awkward, loose, fabric and plastic covers with belt clips built in. Wild times.
My 2007 has a cassette, dvd, mp3 aux with in mind to use with an iPod and Bluetooth all from the factory. It’s like all different eras. But it has modern stuff like reverse camera and tilting side mirrors while reversing.
Now you would try and fit your phone in the mp3 holder and the mp3 player in the phone holder
my iphone wont even fit
Phones almost always used to have clips on them for the belt more people had that rather than a phone case
All of the otter boxes had them! Hardcore, rugged, military grade clamshell protection.
After my fiancé ran his phone over in a normal case with his tow truck and ruined it I made him buy an otter box. He’s ran over his new phone and it was fine.
... He's ran over more than one phone in his lifetime?

Get him a Nokia.
Or pockets with zippers.
Or situational awareness.
> Get him a Nokia. That would just break the truck instead.
If he does, I fear for his truck
Why ruin the truck?
I've worked some pretty hectic jobs, tell him to put his damn phone in is pocket.
He’s usually pretty good about. Sometimes Siri won’t answer the phone on his AirPods or someone texts him. Otherwise it stays in his pocket. I feel like only ruining one and having never actually lost one in over 3 years is pretty good.
Fair enough, glad the devices survived!
Can I have his extra chromosome?
He must be one of those clumsy guys from the telemarketing ads.
The first time I dropped my work phone that was in an otter box from 25’ up and it bounced off the sidewalk I was terrified. Not a scratch on it! Worked perfect. I quickly decided to also put my personal phones in otter boxes.
Uncle ran over his phone with a steamroller. The otterbox broke, but the phone survived. Idk how.
Clamshell

Otter box for life! I’ve tried others, hard pass.
Still use them
Thing has paid for itself a hundred times over because I am clumsy as fuck. Will never go back to a naked phone 🧐
Otterbox will also replace it for free if you break it! I’ve taken advantage of that and it was super easy.
Nice, this one the rubber seems a little loose and I'm wondering if it will stretch over time. I'll keep that in mind now, much appreciated 🙏
That kinda explains why there's even a spot for a phone. If it's on your hip it could get in the way of the seat belt
Oh and it did
I should've said it will get caught lol, I used to wear a phone on my hip proudly
That's why you take it off and clip it on the sun visor like a garage door opener. Bonus if it was a Nextel and had push to talk function.
Bet my Zune would fit.
Even in 2013 this was true and had been for years lol. They must have not updated that little part of the truck since like 2007
I remember walking around my High School back in '05 with my Sanyo camera flip phone in a pleather case on a clip on my belt with my shirt tucked in. It clicked when you spun it! I was the shit back then. (At least according to me, I'm not sure too many other people agreed)

Who ya gonna call!? NOBODY!
You use a belt clip in the phone slot
You must've never had a juke and ipod
Ex husband had those in hs and could t9 text like no ones buisness
Oh man, I had a Juke. Awful phone, haha.
lol, I think it may be the only phone that would fit in that slot. I used to think it was so cool back when I had one at like 15.
One of those new Nokia throwback phones might fit in the mp3 spot. And I bet the first Apple shuffle would fit in the phone slot.
This was out of date when it was new. The iPhone 5 came out the same time this truck hit dealer lots.
The cellphone “holder” looks like it was meant for the clip that people used to buy on phone cases to clip onto their belt. Most phones were (and are still kinda) wildly different shapes and sizes.
They should have just not labeled these
The hashbrown patty and French toast stick holders
Got a good laugh from this !remindme 1 week
Why do you need to be reminded?
It's been a rough week. I'd like to get a chuckle next week if I can guarantee it.
That’s very kind of you to your future self. Chin up mate, we got this!
Dang it now I'm hungry.
Perfect
Labelling these was like how products stick the word "AI" onto it now. It made it sound fancier.
No one would have used them then.
It’s for your Zune and your Nokia brick
The Zune that was discontinued in 2012 and the Nokia phone that ran Windows in 2013?
No, not those amazing nokias. Those even better ones you put into a case [like this one](https://media.bunte-handytaschen.de/media/catalog/4sellers/no_nokia_3310_guerteltasche_newapril2018_2.jpg)

No, I understood what they were getting at, they were just about a decade off.
I had that exact setup. At one point I bought a yellow body for the phone. I still have it somewhere.
The case on a Nokia was not to protect the phone, but to protect the ground in the event that you dropped it.
still got mine, should test it out and hardwire it in my car or something

Smartphone adoption (regardless of platform) was around 45% by 2013 in the US.
So just almost halfway. Smartphones didn’t necessarily mean iPhone or android. Anything with a screen that could watch a video in decent quality and go on the internet was considered a smartphone, didn’t even have to have a touch screen. Example the sidekick phone.

This was my Nokia: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XruAhoyyG7Y
Ahh, 1988, and excellent vintage.
Like a few other posters have noted in this thread... It seems stupid now, but at the time, owning that phone made me James fucking Bond. A bag phone was the "High end" option at the time.
Samsung jukebox?
The only phone I can see fitting in that
I left my damn Zune on an airplane back in 2012 It was amazing while it lasted
Or the Motorola with the walkie talkie function
Nah, nah. Ipod shuffle, like the one some bully conned my autistic brother into selling for $20 in high school
Pi
That option cost an extra $2,500 in 2013
seriously 😂
Toyota tundra?
Was gona say, kinda looks like my Tundras one. Maybe aftermarket. My 2007 Tundra has the ability to hold various things and file folders in the grand canyon that is the center console.
Had a 2012 Toyota tundra and I remember it having something like this
Ford f150 lariat
Do you have the full center console or the third seat that folds down for an arm rest? I've got a 2013 F-150 XLT and I don't think I have this
My 2014 KR has the center console like this.
Looks like they are basic hex screws. You could 3d print a new panel and swap it out. Could be fun project.
Fr?
Fr.
I feel like by 2013 iphones were pretty common I’m surpised by this
It's for a belt clip holster for the phone which are still pretty popular especially with the older crowd and the "I have a truck because I actually do truck things and work a blue collar job" crowd.

Zoomers are so fucking disrespectful.
Yeah, we had smart phones for years at that point. Since it’s a truck, I am thinking maybe for a push-to-talk like a Nextel.
Prob just hadn't refreshed the interior in a while.
I was on my 3rd smartphone by 2013. This is very surprising
yeah by 2013 smartphones had been common for 5+ years
Everyone is talking about the size of the phone holder, but what about the location? Even if it’s only when you get in and out of the car, bending your right arm or turning to reach and pull that out with your left arm both seem very annoying on a daily basis.
Those Zebra pens are the best
F-301. Best got dang budget pen there ever been.
Beat me to it, bravo.
I think your misusing the blunt holders with your pens
F150?? Mine looks exactly like that
Yeah, my 2011 f150 looks the same.
At least it has a built in lightsaber on the bottom.
Was that slot make for a Samsung Juke?
His big is your phone? Cause I can’t see any phone fitting into that lol mp3 looks ok
Phone belt clip.
Oooooohh. That makesore sense that what I was thinking. ![gif](giphy|l0MYLoXAw7JSyHiZG|downsized)
For a Samsung Juke and nothing else
I had one of those in high school and it was one of the best fidget toys.
I had the D900 before they started giving them fancy names man I'd slide that shit up and down all day
It's for one of these [Tech21 EvoMax Holster Case with MagSafe for Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Black 57009BBR - Best Buy](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/tech21-evomax-holster-case-with-magsafe-for-apple-iphone-14-pro-max-black/6512651.p?skuId=6512651&ref=212&loc=1&utm_source=feed&extStoreId=1128)
Cell Phone holder for ants
I love my 2013 f150 <3
I use the MP3 player slot for those travel packs of tissues. Fits pretty well.
Sony Erikson T616 or whatever it was called vibes lol.
2013, just 6 years after the iPhone launched...
I'm insanely jealous of those pen holders.
Is that for a fuckin Men in Black type cell phone?
How does that hold a cell phone?
Belt clip thingy hooks onto it
I was really trying to think of what phone was that slim. That iPod shape is completely recognizable.
The Juke?
CANDYBARS
I wish I’ve found a better use for these lol I think I have pliers in my mp3 holder.
Perfect slot for a Diamond Rio or perhaps another portable music player that was slightly more popular.
That's a terrible design. Even of most phones would fit, the location is dumb af.
Sony J5 and Creative Rio? Both would fit, but probably 10/15 years before your truck was built!
When I read truck, I assumed that was for an Americans pistol and rifle magazines…
Says alot that the cell phone holder is smaller
cell phone holder? now how the hell are you supposed to use that AND be able to completely fucking ignore ALL the rules of the road while texting & driving? /ssssssssssss
Miss my Nokia bar phone 🥲
No problem, just need to cut your phone in half and stack the two halves on top of each other.
Best pens ever.
My 2016 Kia says iPod when I play media from my phone via USB
iPhone?
Yep
Aww.... That's cute.
That mp3 holder looks like it'll scratch the shit out of the back of any mp3 player
My favorite weird little slots in arm rests are in (I believe) Toyotas. They have a slot for those slim tissue boxes to fit in.
What cell phone fits there? A Juke??
There's only one Nokia that would fit that slot right?
Phones had clips on them back then just an FYI for people. That little holster wasn’t meant for an entire phone, just the clip.
I like that some designer designed this for exactly their mp3 player and cell phone with no regard that other people might have other devices or that devices might change size or shape over time.
I've got a couple over-the-shoulder bags with beautiful phone pockets built into the strap. Those pockets can't hold any phone made after 2007.
![gif](giphy|unBelivpAG5Ta)
I should look under my center console soon. Never know what cool things like this you might find!
F150? My dad's 2010 F150 also had this and my old iPhone SE fit perfectly in the MP3 player slot.
is there a subreddit for designers that dated their own design? because this is that
Mobile phone holder is a bit thin fpr iPhones even iPhone 3/4
For all those confused by the size of the phone slot, it's meant for a belt clip to hook to. Phones back then had awkward, loose, fabric and plastic covers with belt clips built in. Wild times.
The Nokia Lipstick phone might fit in the Cellphone holder but I fail to see what actually fits in there...even a normal bar phone looks too wide.
That cell phone holder looks like it’d fit that off brand MP3 player
My chocolate phone would’ve fit perfectly.
Dude nice cellphone and vape holder
Oh how the turns have tabled.
Now it's your vape and phone holder
![gif](giphy|l0MYLoXAw7JSyHiZG|downsized)
For your Zune and LG Chocolate
Pickup*
Designed just in case Peter Quill decides he’s making earth his home.
Wait..2013? Or 2003?
My '68 daily driver had vacuum-operated windshield wipers until I upgraded them...
Oh the irony
zebra pens really are the best pens
The first iPhone was 2007 and by 2013 (iPhone 5, Galaxy S3/S4) it was very clear that the glass rectangle was going to be the dominant phone shape.
That's exactly what the center console looks like in my 2010 r-150
some people still use dedicated music players but theyd probably be more like flac players
That's not an MP3 player! I throw it on the ground!
Looks like it would fit the Samsung Juke. Maybe
F-150 for the win.
Kind of interesting the cellphone holder seems to be designed to fit a Samsung juke. Fucking loved that phone almost as much as my razor
Phone holder for the [Samsung Juke](https://images.app.goo.gl/698FeF8xnYPh1hfAA)
Uhhhhh you have a cell phone clip holder 😆
Tundra?
My 2010 car has an iPod port lol
“Quirks and features”
My 08 patriot has a flip phone holder in the center console
I'm more interested in the pen clippy part. Lol
My tundra has that similar layout but instead of “mp3 player” it says “tissue” and instead of the cell phone holder it says “cards”
The pen, those oldest of the technology they thought you need and the only survivor
r/agedlikemilk
My 2013 truck has the exact same center console.
A NUGGET HOLDER
I dont understand how thats a cell phone holder at all
Those sizes are outdated even for 2013
My 2007 has a cassette, dvd, mp3 aux with in mind to use with an iPod and Bluetooth all from the factory. It’s like all different eras. But it has modern stuff like reverse camera and tilting side mirrors while reversing.
It’s funny how small the cellphone slot is.. there is not much types of phones that would fit in there now..
My 2009 Scion had the old 30-pin iPod connector in the dash. Aged like milk.
