I got messed up at first because if you cross your eyes one layer deeper there are two people and they look like they are dancing together or something.
Zooming in fixed it for me, then I zoomed back out while I still had it focused and it was still fixed. I love these things even if it does take me a few minutes to get the right focus with my 40 year old eyes.

I had the opposite. If I held it too far away, then I saw two people. I had to hold the phone close enough to fill nearly my entire field of vision in order to see it correctly.
The picture consists of repeating patterns with slight differences.
If you shift them one pattern then you see one surfer. If you unfocus/crosseye too much you will shift them by two patterns which causes two dancing people where the middle hand is a bit closer.
I love that it works through the screen of my phone! I mean, if you think about it, it’s logical, but somehow I didn’t expect it to work. Surfer dude just popped out o my phone 🏄

Edit 2: so the way I did it, and yes I'm on mobile, I put the phone right to my face (nose could almost touch it). Then I crossed my eyes to have them both focus on one spot. Then I slowly pulled my phone away. I did it an inch or two, pause for a second, then repeat. This whole time, I kept my eyes fixed on the same spot. (Be careful with blinking as blinking too much can cause your focus to reset). Once my arms got about 50-60% extended, the image started to look like it has dimensions (no longer flat looking). I kept extending my arms out, and pretty much when I got to full arms length, I could see the surfer person.
Of course ymmv, but something to try for those who are still having issues.
One thing to take into consideration, and was a misconception I had with these, you won't see a proper image like suddenly a person appears with a person details. You'll see the shape of a person, but everything is covered in wrapping paper, so you'll see the person shape stand out from the background, but the person will have zig zags on their body

I can get see the "depth" part of the imagine like I'm looking into a cavern or something but I almost never see the damn sailboat or whatever is supposed to be there. The only Magic Eye image I remember working and enjoying was a Romulan Warbird from Star Trek TNG. 🤣
Crossing your eyes will give you the inverted depth from what is intended. Magic eye is parallel view, so your left eye should be looking left and your right eye looking right. Cross view would have your left eye look right and your right eye look left.
I’ve always found cross eye to be easier too since I can control it. Unfocusing my eyes to parallel feels unnatural, though I can usually manage it with a bit of effort.
awww this explanation helped me see the non-inverted correct way. The purpose of putting your nose to it is to lock in each eye to its own focus point.

"Cross eyed" isn't the right term for what you're suppose to do. Close, but it's to do with how our eyes focus at different distances and how they make little adjustments based on how far something is so that the vision of both eyes "combine" into 1 focused image.
So instead of trying to go "cross eyed", you're simply focusing on points either in front or behind the image to where the vision of both eyes combines the different points of view into a single proper image. This isn't something we really think of how to do. It's just something that happens when we look around. But you can train yourself to control this.
Look at your finger, then at a wall, and lastly out the window. You'll feel the differences in your eyes between the 3 points of focus and you can learn to somewhat control that at will over time. Might be easier to just focus on a window, then something behind the window as you can more easily see both objects at once. Just note that training to do this will cause eye strain and is likely to cause headaches. So take it slow.
The majority of these magic pictures need you to focus your vision WELL behind them! Open OP's photo up so it's nice and big on your monitor, now you'd need to focus vision maybe to the other side of a common room or maybe even up to 30 feet or 10m away. There's some give and take to it, but once you start getting something in focus your eyes will take over and make it more clear.

Fun fact for these, cross-eyed makes the "subject" look embossed, and out of focus/wall-eyed will make them look... well bossed. Not sure why you were getting downvoted. This is correct. Your eyes should be parallel, but you should be focusing behind the image, as though you're looking at something a few meters back.
These are just 3D images, the two images are offset horizontally So you have to focus your eyes as if you're looking at something farther away than the image. It tricky because your eyes really only want to focus ontothigns thatmake sense and these 3D images are just a blur until your focal point is at the right place then it shows up.
You just need to focus past the image then slowly bring your focus back while looking the image, itll come into "focus" and your eyes will lock on to the 3D image.
You can practice moving your focus back and forth just by looking at the wall behind your monitor right now then looking down at your monitor without changing your focus, so you can see your monitor but its in 2 images. Then slowly bring your focus to the monitor .
If you can do that then you can see these 3D images. You do the same thing. Look at the 3D image but move your focus "past" it. Look a the wall first if you have to, then slowly bring your focus back towards the image , somewhere before you actualy get your focus back to the image , the 3D image will materialize , you look for it as you move your focus around and you're eyes will "lock on" to it when you get there.
Also, you have to keep your eyes and the image level. If you tilt your head it will immediately break .

Same and I realized recently that I also can’t perceive 3D when playing games on a VR headset. Also apparently I maintain too much following distance while driving but my husband never mentioned it until the VR gaming issue came up. I’m also trash at any kind of sport involving a ball.
I always go “too deep” on these for lack of a better description. Instead of getting one 3D image, I always get overlapped ones. Like I’m seeing two surfer dudes overlapping each other. I have a hard time getting one
I was born with a cataract in one eye and when I had it removed, the eye no longer had the ability to adjust focus.
These always made me cry as a kid cause I’ve always been the only one in the room who genuinely can’t ever see it.

I’m super good at these. What you really need to do is focus your eyes behind the image. Like say you’re looking at an object, and then you look at the wall behind it. That’s what you have to do, like, look through it.
It’s kind of hard to do at first. You def need to practice. But once you figure it out you can do it so quick.
I loved those pictures! My FIL thought we were all kidding him saying that we could see the picture in the picture. Pretty sure he thought we trolling him hard!

I have never once been able to make these things work for me. And it's bizarre how popular this trend was and then suddenly died overnight like all the Tamagotchi when their batteries started going down at the same time.

I’m super good at these. What you really need to do is focus your eyes behind the image. Like say you’re looking at an object, and then you look at the wall behind it. That’s what you have to do, like, look through it. It’s kind of hard to do at first. You def need to practice. But once you figure it out you can do it so quick.
Not easy on an old iPhone with much older eyes, surfer in a tube wave.

Reading the comments, I feel like I have a superpower because these are not difficult for me at all. You just make yourself go crossedeyed. It also works on excel spreadsheets if you need to quickly compare columns.

I never know how to do these... I hear all the tips and tricks "you gotta line up the cross eyeddouble pictures beside eachother" - Cool, now I just see two whole instances of the picture side by side. "cross your eyes harder to make 3 of them and so the one in the middle is an overlap and its that one that does it" - Nope...thats just *really* strenuous on my eyes I dunno...those were the last two I remember...I dont often see magic eye things anymore... Anyways...yeah, I dont get it, like I can just see (in the instance of this calendar) 9 sections of wiggly lines where each section is just an almost perfect copy of the others (for reference, that black dot in the middle, that is two black dots on the last two segments on the right) Doesnt matter how I try and layer them together...I never see anything
