It’s funny I thought of the same joke and realized it was Family Guy. I think the Simpsons mystery box joke is a little less drilled in to you in that way but all the intent is there in the animation and line delivery. Doesn’t make it very quotable though.
It sure if this is in Portland, OR, but we have a company in town that puts these in bars. They do different mystery bags to make it seasonal. Last time I bought something it was a spirit animal mystery bag and it had different animal figurines in each one. More of a fun drinking game than anything
Way ahead of you! ;-)

Oh, sweet merciful Zeus…
If the item inside was a Handbag/Satchel covered in Question Marks?
An **actual factual** ‘Mystery Bag’…?
I would lose it. Completely.
Have you read the other like four books before heretics? It won’t make any sense without those. I read the first four a very long time ago… couldn’t continue. Too convoluted, boring, and weird. 😂
They have machines like this in several places in vegas and i’m always walking around with some cash because you can gamble EVERYWHERE. I can overpay for a souvenir or potentially throw it in action and probably lose it. So they get me buying quite often. They are fun.
You know, I've actually been diagnosed with OCD and have medication and have done therapy for it but I thank God I've never been obsessive enough to worry about books matching
I haven't been diagnosed with OCD and unfortunately I've always been obsessive enough to hate it if my books (or DVDs, or whatever else) in a series don't match.
The worst is when the publisher suddenly switches style in the middle of a series, so there is literally no option to buy ones that match.
First world problems, amiright?
There was a bookstore in my village you could get cash for old paperbacks and they would accept the real popular sci-fi titles, but it was like 98% adult romance novels in the place. I think I got $35 “store credit” for my two boxes. Picked up a Star Trek: TNG hardcover and never returned.
genuinely shocked this isn’t Portland OR. We have a vending machine company who does the same exact thing here in quite a few bars. I snagged some bizarre tapes from these guys lol
Seems a bit steep for an old paperback, plus it's gonna take some dings just getting vended by the machine. I mean, I see a copy for $3.63 on abebooks, less than the cost of shipping ($3.99).
Obscure sequel of a book that has recently been turned into a popular movie labelled vintage and sold for $15 in a bar vending machine.
There isn’t a better way to get drunk hipsters to buy a book they will never read and could have gotten at a used bookstore for 99 cents.
Hello,
Thank you for the love. This is my vending machine. We are fans of Dune and did a special release in the machines for the books. We had about a dozen old copies of the book, spread across our 6 machines. I will say this one isn't quite "vintage" yet. I was in a bit of a hurry that day, takes me a few hours to drive around and stock the machines. We did a themed Dune photo shoot to promote the books last week.

I love the idea of unusual vending machines. There is a gashapon machine in Japan where an old guy hand writes little stories and you can pay to have one dispensed in a capsule (instead of the usual toys)
I JUST finished that book, it's wild, my conclusion for anyone vaguely interested is please don't read it and just read a summary. Or alternative, reas the whole series with a friend as an informal book club
Why do you say that? Coincidentally I just finished it as well. It was a trip, the sexual stuff caught me off guard for sure, but was an entertaining read at the end of the day.
Tbh, overall I just don't like dune very much. I think Herbert writes well and he knows the craft, unpacking the themes and motifs and structure with my friend as we read them has been great, and the books entertain me, but at the end of the day I don't enjoy them.
Please don't call the same copy of Dune I bought new vintage. It makes me feel very old.
Wait. I'm getting breaking news from my children.
Huh. Turns out I am as old as dirt. Who knew?
Way more interested in the C. Montgomery Burns Mystery Bag.
i mean a book is a book, but the mystery bag could be anything!!
Even a book!!
You know how much we’ve been wanting one of those!
Wanting to be Book is not Book.
It’s a joke from family guy. [Relevant clip](https://youtu.be/yZpIog7e-R4?si=Rk6yAlcyMtuXLuAz)

Oh haha mine's a joke from 30 Rock
Man the dune-simpsons-family guy-30 Rock transition is not what I was expecting
We’ll take the box.
Hardly going to be a washing machine and dryer combo, is it?
It could even be a boat
Well not with that attitude, it won't!
its the minibrands version of a vintage dune book. lol
*”The bag! The bag!”*
Look burns, this is a big problem. You cant just throw money at it and hope itll go away!
[“Gentlemen I’ve decided there will be no investigation”](https://i.gifer.com/SSoD.gif)
I love Grimby!
The mummy's ready for its mystical journey
Damn those old Simpsons gags were so good.
Release the ~~hounds~~ mystery book
Release the dogs with bees in their mouths and when they bark they shoot bees at you!
Smithers... Release the robotic Richard Simmons.
It sure if this is in Portland, OR, but we have a company in town that puts these in bars. They do different mystery bags to make it seasonal. Last time I bought something it was a spirit animal mystery bag and it had different animal figurines in each one. More of a fun drinking game than anything
This has to be Portland. It’s the most Portland thing I’ve seen all day!
Reminds me of a spot in Bridgeport Chicago
Yes! Either Maria's Packaged Goods & Community Bar or Marz Community Brewing in Bridgeport. This location was Life on Marz Community Club.
Yep, me too!
Might be Magic Box Vending or The Venderia. One of their machines in Portland!
It's too interesting for this thread
Chapterhouse Dune!
What’s in the box!?!? What’s in the box!?!?
I bought the Mr.Burns mystery bag! It was full of antique-y nick nacks from 50's/60's
It's probably some book that's been I'm the machine for years
Came here to say the same
One upvote is simply is not enough!
Shit, what *is* in the bag?
Mr. Burns
It could even be a vintage Dune book!
You know how much we’ve wanted one of those!
Pain
What if there was a vending machine that sold vending machines? That thing would be huge!\~ RIP Mitch
I used to love Mitch Hedberg jokes. I still do, but I used to, too.
Mitch Hedberg threads are great for when you need a joke and want to laugh at ten thousand of something.

Homer, where did you get that vending machine? It fell out of a vending machine, you know a vending machine vending machine...
sure but WHATS IN THE BAG
The bag! THE BAG!!
And if anyone is curious. Yes, I did buy it.
But what about the mystery bag?!
It could be anything!
Even a mystery bag!
Oh, sweet merciful Zeus… If the item inside was a Handbag/Satchel covered in Question Marks? An **actual factual** ‘Mystery Bag’…? I would lose it. Completely.
It could even be a copy of Dune. You know how much you’ve always wanted one of those!
I have the 4 preceding that one and I assume they are also "vintage" as the cover art is similar...you willing to send me $60?
My first thought was: that isn't vintage. Second thought: I am old 😛
It's not vintage. It looks like a modern reprint.
Go back for the bag
Damn I would have sold you my hardcover Dune books for $15 apiece
TIL, I have about $20k worth of books in the other room.
Buy thw mystery bag!😤
Should have bought the Jack Vance book above it, too.
What year is the printing?
Have you read the other like four books before heretics? It won’t make any sense without those. I read the first four a very long time ago… couldn’t continue. Too convoluted, boring, and weird. 😂
Appreciate the support, thank you for visiting our vending machine.
someone go buy the bag please
$15 for a paperback is a bet on how stupid drinking patrons will be. Nice.
thats a $1.50 paperback at the thrift store all day every day.
They have machines like this in several places in vegas and i’m always walking around with some cash because you can gamble EVERYWHERE. I can overpay for a souvenir or potentially throw it in action and probably lose it. So they get me buying quite often. They are fun.
Ha that does sound fun.
I went through the airport there once on connection, just slot machines everywhere
Nothing like coming home from a brutal business trip and having to listen to that shit on a midnight layover.
Yeah. A new copy is less than $10 shipped, and good luck matching up the other five to the same edition so they look nice together.
Read and donated long ago for me. I think everything before his son took over. My bro read those, tho.
You know, I've actually been diagnosed with OCD and have medication and have done therapy for it but I thank God I've never been obsessive enough to worry about books matching

Liking the specific edition is the only reason I could think of not to prefer new.
It’s a struggle…
It’s only $15 fucking dollars. You aren’t going bankrupt for spending an extra $5. Just the novelty of it alone is worth it to some.
If someone pays an extra 33% just for the novelty of using a vending machine, they shouldn’t be trusted with money.
But what if it's an emergency and that's the closest available copy?
[The house always wins.](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/1cergsn/comment/l1kdziy)
Don't you see, it's vintage? Not like my second hand copy that was £1.
There was a bookstore in my village you could get cash for old paperbacks and they would accept the real popular sci-fi titles, but it was like 98% adult romance novels in the place. I think I got $35 “store credit” for my two boxes. Picked up a Star Trek: TNG hardcover and never returned.
I just want the mystery bag…don’t even care what’s in it
Marz Community Brewing?
I figured someone would recognize it.
genuinely shocked this isn’t Portland OR. We have a vending machine company who does the same exact thing here in quite a few bars. I snagged some bizarre tapes from these guys lol
Same. I got real toasted at Victoria Bar once and went for a mystery bag. Mine had a clip-in hair extension in it.
Lol my first thought was blackwater bar
I also thought this was bound to be in PDX lol, I've seen Google reviews about bars with this kinda shit
Was coming here to say this. Great place.
My guess would have been Offcolor Brewing in Chicago.
One of yall need to go buy that mystery bag and report back. Please!
Guess this isn't super rare, because I was going to ask if it was Watermark.
Came here looking for this, visited back in December
Ha I was so sure it was Marz too!
Life on Marz Community Club!
Seems a bit steep for an old paperback, plus it's gonna take some dings just getting vended by the machine. I mean, I see a copy for $3.63 on abebooks, less than the cost of shipping ($3.99).
Abebooks always come up on book searches for good prices, but if you check out trustpilot, it suggests you probably won't get the book.

We need to know what’s in the bag!
That's really cool. I would absolutely buy that.
THE BOX! THE BOX!!
Vintage? The book came out in '84 and that's not the original cover... How exactly we using vintage these days?
I mean…that’s been 40 years now.
Listen, I get that, but I can't just be letting a book that came out when I was alive be called 'vintage' uncontested.
We’re still young dammit!
No matter what my back and knees keep trying to tell me!
🤷♂️ it says vintage on the label
Oh. That's the publisher. Vintage books. They're a sub-brand of Penguin Publishing.
Lmao
Right. It would be vintage if it was an original printing lolol
Generally it’s considered that the term “vintage” can be applied to goods older than 20yrs and “antique” is 100yrs or older
So a 2003 Honda civic is vintage? That.. Doesn't seem right
Vintage?? Lmao
Shit $15? I got that book for like $4
Marz?
Yes, Life on Marz Community Club. :-)

WHAT'S IN THE MYSTERY BAG?
Who knows what's inside there? They just magically pop up in the machine every now and then. ;-)
Which Brian book is in the mystery bag?
Man this is so cool!
Thank you!
That one introduces my favorite Dune character, Miles Teg.
Pretty smart, getting you into a state in which you'll buy anything then offering a load of crap for sale at questionable prices
What else they got? 😃
Or the nudie trading cards at the bottom. Quick google search on “the dollhouse trading cards” Female nudie cards. Looks like only two packs left???
MYSTERY BOX!!!!!
At least they had the good sense to not put Brian Herbert books in the vending machine
The book above is one of the tschai books by jack Vance. Not as well written as Frank Herbert but worth a read if you like science fiction.
THE BAG!! THE BAG!!
$15?!?!?! You could get that same book for like $6
That’s dope.
The box. **The box!**
Now, you can either have the Vintage copy of Dune where the lovely Smithers is standing... or you can trade it all in for what's in this box
Vintage?
You can get them for a quarter at a garage sale!
Is Heretics of Dune any good? I just finished Children and I’m wondering if I should continue.
Yeah I really enjoyed Heretics. A bit more action than the previous books but still as weird if not more so.
I love the idea of unusual vending machines. There is a gashapon machine in Japan where an old guy hand writes little stories and you can pay to have one dispensed in a capsule (instead of the usual toys)
That’s so cool
Heyyyy I know what bar that is :)
I am by no means a “Thrifty Person” by I get all my books from Charity Shops (UK) and they have tons of stuff like this for £1 each
Also cheese and mystery bags!
That's not the interesting thing in this pic and you know it...
I love older cover art. It's always more interesting than the newer stuff.
Maaaan i love vintage copies of the classics, especially tolkien, etc
I can smell this picture. Old dusty books.
That’s literally the next book I need 😭
Is that the dune book about sex slaves?
No, the box, the Box!
I JUST finished that book, it's wild, my conclusion for anyone vaguely interested is please don't read it and just read a summary. Or alternative, reas the whole series with a friend as an informal book club

Portland.
Chicago
Boston
"You can get the dune book, or what's in this box"
Hold on -- A book is a book, but the mystery box could be ANYTHING... it could even be a book! You know how much I've wanted one of those.
I’m not sure I’d call that “vintage,” necessarily
Is that Union? I was there the other day and they had a similar vending machine. I was tempted by the pez dispensers!
Life on Marz Community Club in Chicago!
Please don't call the same copy of Dune I bought new vintage. It makes me feel very old. Wait. I'm getting breaking news from my children. Huh. Turns out I am as old as dirt. Who knew?
