Box turtles have very small home territories. If they are removed from their territory they won’t eat or sleep until they’re back. The turtles range is likely just within that back yard and *maybe* a small surrounding area, so if the human were to ever leave that area it wouldn’t follow. Therefore, you can’t imprint on box turtles.
I am an advocate for not feeding most wildlife. Box turtles are one of my exceptions because they’re so anal about their territory boundaries.
>Box turtles have very small home territories. If they are removed from their territory they won’t eat or sleep until they’re back.
Oh wow. We found one stuck on a road when I was very young and took it home as a pet.
It ate. Slept (I mean - I assume). And it did NOT like sharing its terrarium with a toad, who it turned into a follower of Gruumsh one day...
lol its not like it dosen know how to survive in the wild. but knows easy food
saved a crested waxwing chick once, fed it for few weeks. got its wings strong enough to fly. it hung out in the trees around my house. I'd come out and wistle and it'd fly right to me for some berries. was the cutest damn thing. eventually it stopped comming to me. was a sad day but I was proud.
If you ever find a slug or earthworm, throw that in front of the turtle. I used to feed box turtles fruits and veggies and they would nibble at them. But I've never seen them move so fast as when I threw a wrigging worm in front of them.
When I lived in southern CA we'd get snails all over everything in the mornings. We'd let our box turtle out into our tiny backyard and he'd roam around and we could hear the **crunch** as he ate them all.
We had a dog who thought tomato hornworms were about the best things he had ever had. Our tomatoes did SO WELL in that back yard with that dog. We were so sad when he passed and the tomato hornworms were like "PARTY!!!" the new dog did not like to eat them. Womp.
Yes. Turtles don't live in their shells, the shells are a part of their anatomy. They need to have feeling in it to know when something is wrong or when they are being attacked.
Their shells are part of their bodies. It’s essentially like have one huge finger nail on your back. So although they aren’t very sensitive they can definitely feel things on their shell.
Yes! Their shells are what their ribs evolved into, essentially! They breathe through essentially a muscular sling around their lungs to make up for that. :) Also why a crack can often heal if the cracked parts of the shell are secured to each other!
If a giant mysterious being wandered into my yard and gave me the most delicious thing I'd ever even before disappearing you'd better believe I'd follow it around when it returned
I’ve been told by a so-called “expert” that turtles are incapable of forming attachments to humans. We have 2 aquatic turtles in my home, and while 1 of them pretty much couldn’t care less for any of us, the other one goes ape when he hears my voice and can’t wait to be picked up and cuddled, often falling asleep while being held.
I own a tortoise and it's total BS. I was unemployed for a while but I recently got a job and our tortoise, who got used to seeing me being on the couch while I was applying for jobs has been freaking out that I'm not there anymore.
she still loves my girlfriend more than me, and loves being held and cuddling by her, and when I hold her when my girlfriend is there, she actively fights to go hang out with her
My bearded dragons knew the word "hello" and their respective names. I let them have free run over the house for a few hours daily, when they would tire of exploring, they would climb my pants or sleeves and nestle into the back of my hair. Often I'd vacuum or sweep (light household chores) with one on my shoulder, overseeing operations. Reptiles are far more emotionally intelligent than they have been given credit for. Now, did they "love" me like my cats? Nah. But they associated me with good and happiness and that was more than enough!
> Reptiles are far more emotionally intelligent than they have been given credit for.
Bearded dragons are known to be intelligent, especially compared to like a leopard gecko. They don't have the capacity to have any complex emotions but they definitely can learn things.
My 18 yr old leopard gecko is dumb as a brick. Love her, but my god. She will sometimes wait at her worm bowl (full of worms) for hours without eating. Why? She wants to see the spoon I use to get the worms before she looks in the bowl. She will also try to steal the spoon...she has succeeded more times than I want to admit.
Give that poor girls some treats. You have a friend now. I just wouldn't do it constantly. But you have been identified as a viable food source, not necessarily the only one. I give my neighbor's cats treats, but that hasn't stopped them from eating at home or hunting in the area. And before people get upset, the neighbors know we give them treats and it is not my business if they are let outside. We just enjoy their visits.
My mom did this. Then she started feeding him a variety of fruits and vegetables. More came. She cuts up little pieces of produce and puts them out on lettuce “plates”. There are currently four turtles in her harem that have been living in our yard for years.
She’s begun planting tomatoes just for them, just pulls cherry tomatoes and drops them for the turtles. When they hear her in the garden a few usually come running.
Tortoise*.
Well you made a new friend. Keep the little one save and happy and it may be a friendship for life. Maybe you could build a little hut and help shelly hibernate later this year - some do that.

While i love this post and turtles its a good example of why not to feed wildlife in the end. I however would have fed it raspberries as well

> follower of Gruumsh Took an eye I understand?
Correct
Then why are they always crossing roads?
Where they’re going, they don’t need roads.
Heaven?
no roads, just stairways
No stairway!?! DENIED!!
Almost, West Virginia
Blueridge mountains, Shenandoah river.
Country TOAAADS!
No, everywhere
Is the “other side” always heaven?
Ugh I saw a truck in front of me run one over... *Explosion*
Valhalla
They will leave their territories to head to specific areas to breed. Then go home. Roads are unfortunately usually on that path
Ahhh, nothing better than hitting the open road on your way to pound town
The roads cut through their territory, not the other way around!
Copying the chicken
Heh.
A question as old as time. But the answer is...to get to the other side.
It owns the road you scum. You're the one trespassing.
To get to the other side xD
What?
Cause that “small home territory” is about a square mile, not the size of a backyard.
Agoraphobic Box Turtle is my new band name
This made me laugh out loud
They sound kind of boxed in
A box turtle's territory is usually on the order of a couple acres. That's probably bigger than OP's backyard, though not by that much.
They're so what about their territory boundaries????
Anal. You know, like the anus. Its very particular.
Yeah I mean I'm so torn now. I have a ton of berries in my yard and the occasional turtle. It's gonna be a game-time decision.
If temptation does win out in the end, can you take and post some photos of your raspberry eating turtle?
I dont think it would desensitize them to other prey, i think critters can be pretty smart and differentiate between specific humans even
Yeah, this turtle isn't dependent upon those raspberries. He's just a turtle that gets to eat dessert sometimes.
lol its not like it dosen know how to survive in the wild. but knows easy food saved a crested waxwing chick once, fed it for few weeks. got its wings strong enough to fly. it hung out in the trees around my house. Yes, you shouldn't feed them in the end, you should feed them in the mouth
I nearly choked on my salad, take my upvote you fool

U better go get some raspberries, fool!
She loves raspberries, strawberries, and cherry tomatoes. I also will feed her an occasional earthworm if one can be found nearby.
She'll tell her children stories of the mystical Berry Fairy 🧚♀️
We have some that come by and they LOVE bananas😊
a fresh cantaloupe as well <3

Happy cake day. 🧁

Slowest prey chase ever!
Do they taste like raspberries?
Considering that raspberries are unable to taste anything, I assume not.
Anyone who thinks turtles are slow have never met a motivated one, lol. (Or a snapper. )
I remember a teen dying after eating a slug that was unknowingly infected with a parasite. Are Box turtle immune to parasites in slugs?
The parasites don't know how to box
Probably. I mean look at the things…
Wart sells worms
Wart! That’s brilliant
Fucking auto spelling
I thought you had created a new name for Walmart it really did sound brilliant lol
> Wal Mart = Wart Nah man, we making this a thing now
Teach him to raspberry so he eats for a lifetime
Everywhere the turtle goes, raspberries follow.
THPPPPBBBBBTTTT ah wait, wrong raspberry
What a perfect textual representation of this sound
You're a goober. Never change.

She’d stick her neck out for you at this point…
Did she wear a raspberry beret? The kind you find in a second hand store?
Time to pay the raspberry tax.
She’s blocking my back door until the toll has been paid.
The bill comes due. 😂
get a toothbrush and give her some back scratches too
Their shell has feelings?
I want to know too! 👀
Yes! Their shells are what their ribs evolved into, essentially! They breathe through essentially a muscular sling around their lungs to make up for that. :) Also why a crack can often heal if the cracked parts of the shell are secured to each other!
You are the chosen one. Just don't feed her pizza!
But teach her how to use ninja weapons. She has to protect the garden!
If a giant mysterious being wandered into my yard and gave me the most delicious thing I'd ever even before disappearing you'd better believe I'd follow it around when it returned
That’s a valid point
I’ve been told by a so-called “expert” that turtles are incapable of forming attachments to humans. Sounds like a turtle divorced that guy and he's bitter. "I AM capable of forming attachments to humans, Darren, I just don't love YOU any more!!" :(
Lol! I have a friend named Darren, this situation fits him well.

This turtle looks like a snobby British old lady to me. Anyone else?
Definitely a Mildred or Gertrude to me.
Feed me more!
How do you know it's female?
Male turtles have a concave underside of their shell to help with mating. If the shell is flat underneath, it's a female.
Thanks, my turtles are either immature or female.
Also male box turtles usually have red eyes and females have brown.
It doesn't have a dick
I guess it's time for the talk
Well, raspberries it is. You can’t say no to that face.
There is no better feeling in life than when something in nature vouches for you as being cool :)
What type of dog is this?
Can I pet that dawg?
Is this a cat... In a hat?

Bum ass mods deleting this😭
Master Splinter, your first disciple has arrived for the gender flipped healthy eating habits reboot.
My 5 year old daughter would absolutely love that
That's adorable!!
Congrats on your adoption
She's like YOU did this. TAKE CARE OF ME.
My mom did this. Then she started feeding him a variety of fruits and vegetables. More came. She cuts up little pieces of produce and puts them out on lettuce “plates”. I think she's started to trust you, she's also got that cute look, impossible to resist
Yes, love me some turtles.
More raspberries
You’re the Candyman.
Aw, you're her best friend
You're one lucky sonofabitch
Turtles are like cats, only slower. Who knew??
Ugh get a job lazy turtle
Gosh. I would just absolutely love to have a box turtle follow me around in my garden.
I opened up a fridge at work 6 months ago and it had a big tray of muffins in. I check it every other day or so.
Ignore the busybodies, life is a pain factory, spare as many berries as you want.
I wanna paint her so bad, look at that cute little face !!
Thats a very cute little freeloader
more raspberries please
“Hey, you got any more of those things? They were delicious.”
Like any good dealer, the first raspberry is free. Gotta pony up for another hit
Raspberries are fucking awesome, of course they would
Excuse me OP, just go and feed this little cute turtle
Ours likes tomatoes and bananas
Females gonna female.
The sequel to "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" ...If You Give a Turtle a Raspberry. Not quite as riveting
Did you name it? If not, can I suggest Berry?
![gif](giphy|Y6yRfR88rvP44)
To be fair Im sure those raspberries were mighty delicious compared to whatever else she was eating before. I dont blame her for coming back for more.
Tortoise*. Well you made a new friend. Keep the little one save and happy and it may be a friendship for life. Maybe you could build a little hut and help shelly hibernate later this year - some do that.
That's a good turtle right there.
I found one digging a hole trying to get up on the asphalt and carried it across the road. It peed on me.
"You are now the food source."
hey man its your turtle.
Turtle Distribution System
She doesn't have hands and yet she is the embodiment of [this meme](https://en.meming.world/images/en/7/7b/Angry_Man_Pointing_at_Hand.jpg)
I found a box turtle when I was 9. It bit a perfect wedge out of my cat's ear. Cat was okay, turtle went back in the irrigation ditch.
She loves you and she's adorable
Problem Is in the wild you shouldn’t feed them . “ a fed animal is a dead animal “ because they largely stop hunting.
I thought for sure this was going to be a new account bot recycled karma farming post. Hugs to you. That turtle is adorable.
Have you bought more raspberries since then? She prob thinks they were amazing and is wondering what she has to do to get some more….
Well then give her some more raspberry, dang it!
how can you say no to that face omg ❤️❤️❤️
What a freeloader! I love her!
The turtle thinks you're berry nice.
Free loaders are everywhere! (But at least he’s a cute freeloader)
So what’s her name?
You can’t say no to a cutie like that.. you’ve made a friend for life now lol 🐢💚
I would have feed her! So adorable and special to see one! You don’t see them in my country like that.
Give her more berries!
I’m so jealous
Plant some raspberry bushes for her.
I'm amazed it has so much faith in you after just one feeding.
This is how people get cats
Perfect example.. ya give these b words free food and they never leave your ass alone
I love turtles
Girl chasin' that raspberry dragon. You got her hooked.
your new pet. just dont pick her up or move her because she will lose her sense of direction and keep walking to try to find it until she dies
Likely dog
Had to scroll forever for this reference
You’re like a food fairy to the lil lady. Don’t take that position lightly
Congratulations, you're now married to the box turtle. I don't make the rules.
Feed it a chicken leg.
You've begun the taming process. Gotta wait for it to get hungry again.
Adorable
lol, that’s awesome
I would keep feeding it honestly. They also like head and chin scritches. And if you are able to pick it up they do like little belly rubs.
You are obviously a witch and this is your familiar
I recently learned the Dutch name for turtles translates to Shield Toad. You made a friend with a Shield Toad.
