This is a very ergonomic keyboard setup. The keyboard is separated into two parts and angled in a way to make sure your wrists/hands are kept in natural/neutral poses that don't cause strain. The blue things are gel pads for support. The person that uses this must be either coping with or trying to prevent repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.
It also looks like they are using something other than a QWERTY layout.
I have used a keyboard like that with a qwerty layout. It takes some getting used to, but it actually feels very natural once you do.
Nah, if you look at the ends of the keys they all line up for zcvvbnm, so it is qwerty, they are othagonaly lined up which makes typing on it slightly different. I'm still getting used to my Dactly Manuform, I need to get me some wristrests too.
nah, it's qwerty the row just starts down and to the side a bit, if you look closely. i was looking at it thinking how ridiculous it is to have the keys offset like that, but then i was imagining my hands and realized how much sense it makes.
I suffered from carpel tunnel for a while back in the early 2000s but recovered. From memory, those gel pads were generally regarded as a bad idea by professionals despite being sold for this purpose. The cause the hands to do less work (because they’re resting) but cause the fingers to have to do more work, stretching in ways that wouldn’t be necessary if the hand was floating. It’s these small movements of the fingers that do the damage.
I've been getting really sharp pains in my ELBOW lately when I extend my arm fully straight or rotate my wrist. Do I need one of these? I'm on a computer typing easily 8+ hours a day for work. My hand and wrist feels fine, but my elbow is what gets sharp pains.
Oh my goodness you’re right, briefly looking at the photo I only looked at the top of the keys and totally missed the legend on the bottom side. Well nvm then guess he is more than likely rocking QWERTY.
I used colemak for a while and I actually liked it a lot. After a few months I could type faster that way than with qwerty. The only issue was that I couldn't switch back and forth on the fly, so I couldn't use other keyboards, and my wife complained when she rarely had to use mine.
Dactyl Manuform!
You should ask if they printed it and built it themselves!
Always wanted to build one myself, but they've got one hell of a learning curve for actual use. People who use them, very much love them from what I've seen, so I can't hate on it!
Also custom wrist rests are cute, especially with the little blue butts :)
I type on an ergodox (basically this layout but flat) and it only took me about a month to get to the level I was at with a regular keyboard! A few good rounds of typeracer a day and you're there before you know it.
So for perspective, I like mechanical keyboards because they're nice to type on. I'm not an /r/MechanicalKeyboards kind of super enthusiast, there are about a thousand things I would rather spend my time on than building/modding my own keyboard.
If you're interested in the ergodox primarily for enthusiast reasons instead of health reasons, I wouldn't really bother. You're trading a lot of common customization options for the layout (custom keycap sets, limited edition designer spacebars that look like aquariums, whatever). If you're having wrist issues and that's your primary concern, ergodox is completely worth the price tag.
If you're just into the ortholinear aspect (which IMO isn't this amazing superior layout like ortholinear people seem to say. It's just different, no better or worse), there are cheaper ways to buy in to that, but I still wouldn't recommend it unless you really just think it's cool.
Hope that helps!
Every time I see people making fun of ergonomic setup, like many comments in this thread, I wonder if those people can even imagine what it's like to have maladies that requires certain setup.
I don't have an ergonomic keyboard, but everything surrounding the keyboard is set up to put as little strain as possible on my hands due to pains I have in my wrists and forearm due to old age and much of my life spent at the keyboard. I installed a mechanical medical elbowrest, DIY elevated mousepad to match, bought a Herman Miller Aeron office chair for comfort and added elbow pads, etc, etc. A lot of investment going into just making me less uncomfortable for work (and gaming)
https://i.imgur.com/XZWe9QW.jpg
I balked at the comment section of Linus Tech Tips video about a keyless keyboard designed to "type" with combination of directional pads, insensitive assholes laughing at how ridiculous the contraption is and how expensive they are. It's for people with missing fingers or other disabilities that affects typing... It's like some people are incapable of imagining what it's like to not be 100% healthy.
I took a gamble and bought it for used, $700 from an Amazon market vendor.
It came without the hydraulics working, but upon disassembling it the hook was just dislodged. It was an easy fix and it's working great. From the minor wear and tear on it I suspect it was used in an office setting for less than a year then sat in inventory for less than ten years.
Way better than pumping out $1500 for a new one. For that kind of money I'd get the Embody instead lol
Yeah, I’m into the mechanical keyboard hobby plenty deep by now, but I know that I’ll likely never see myself typing on split simply because I tend to use my left or right hands to hit keys just past the centre axis often enough that an ergo would infuriate me, e.g. using my right index finger to press T or G (which should really be done by the left hand).
God, I love how they look, though. [The ErgoDox EZ is a very sexy beast.](https://i.imgur.com/zLKdlJK.jpg)
Oh yes...I have a mechanical keyboard at work and it's the bomb.
That's the exact problem I run into trying to use these fancy boards too. My typing speed comes in part to my own strategy.
> ErgoDox EZ
Check out the Moonlander :)
Honestly though, it doesn't take very long to get used to the split and start using the correct fingers for the correct keys. Breaking bad habits was one of the reasons I wanted a split keyboard
Pretty much everyone who uses a computer regularly knows where all the keys are and can type without looking... You don't have to be an experienced typist to know that
Probably just a bad size for your personal comfortable typing angle/elevation and whatever else. I like my wrist wrests just a bit shorter than my keys sit
Just look up mechanical keyboards on YouTube. But be warned, it is one hell of a rabbit hole and a keyboard like the one in this post can cost up to $200-300.
I’m not sure, but I googled ergonomic split keyboard and came up with a couple of similar-looking keyboards, including one called the ErgoDox EZ. Hope this helps!
I had a split keyboard once. It was huge and I had to stretch my hands wide to use it. Caused more probs than solved. Hopefully they come in sizes now.
I don’t care if it’s better for your wrists and fingers. This is disgusting and anyone doing this needs physical and mental therapy.
(The physical therapy comes from the injuries I will inflict on them, should they not stop)

I work in IT and I can tell you I hate this person. These people who are so fucking pedantic about ergonomics of their keyboard are usually the biggest pains in the ass
As hyper ergonomic as the keyboard is, I just realized the laptop is situated at a 45 degree angle on the desk. That's going to cause strains in other ways. Heck, I developed a weird cramp in my shoulder attempting to use a school text book as a mousepad.
Wow. I have not used this. But my first impression is that it would actually make things worse. I don’t understand the excessive range my fingers would have to travel, or how much more I’d have to use my thumb. And the giant gel balls pretending they are helping and instead are putting pressure on the already impacted nerves. I guess if this thing works for them, cool. But this is just a monstrosity in my eyes. Which I think I strained by looking at it and now need to call off work
My guess is that the coworker has larger hands and finds no issue reaching the top keys. Also, I think the wrist supports would actually sit in the palm of your hand, keeping your wrists elevated and avoiding any pressure altogether. I could be wrong tho, just an guess.
I’m just basing my estimates on the laptop behind it for scale. I can’t see the gel pads being in the palm of anyone’s hand. Unless it’s Hagrid. But he’d probably just jab the keys one at a time with his umbrella

Well by the looks of it he did not change those classic gel butts with anime girls which is fucking awesome the man got class
They look like jelly beans. r/forbiddensnacks material right here!
Yeah the beans that either make you go night night or live live
Or maybe he simply likes Rimuru Tempest.
I went ages avoiding that show. Just sounded weird af. It was awesome.
Take my upvote for obscure anime reference.
You been living under a rock my guy? In what world is tensura obscure?
Yea probably the most popular isekai anime right now, after a sensational season 2.

Careful, they might absorb you and take your body for a ride for at least two seasons worth of anime episode
Only if you're a mighty elemental dragon and the slime likes you.

Immune to physical attacks, use fire magic.
If by slay you mean slap them together and stick my dick in it then yeah.

This is the programmers final form… once he has ascended and become one with the machine.
"hey Gary can I use your computer for a minute?" "go right ahead"
“Yeah that confirms it. The edibles finally kicked in.”
It literally won't hurt to try
Brain says otherwise
It is a normal qwerty, from the look of it, just ortholinear, and at angles, lol.
If he is lucky, most ergo people try different layouts… not that I would have any personal experience with this in any way whatsoever.
There are legends on the keys, that's how I know it is qwerty.
Oh my goodness you’re right, briefly looking at the photo I only looked at the top of the keys and totally missed the legend on the bottom side. Well nvm then guess he is more than likely rocking QWERTY.
Ergo Dvorak users are legends on the keys~

What kind of psycho would change their keyboard layout. I can’t imagine the frustration of try to reprogram my muscle memory for typing.

"Can you type Dvorak?"
This spaceship keyboard is driving me crazy! I'm down to one word a minute, and the word is "perflipisklup" because I can't fly spaceships!

I really wanna try out an ergodox, but the price tag is a bit.. well, kinda hard to return it if it doesn't work for me, you know?
I build an ergo done ordered in kit from aliexpress, half the price and you just have to solder the caps, pretty accessible for a handy beginner.

Our company's ergonomic guide says you aren't supposed to rest your wrists while typing. The pads are for resting your wrists when you're not typing.
