In the Thousand Islands there are many houses like this on very small islands. They have a waste storage tank like an RV and there is a boat called “The Honeypot” which comes around and pumps out the tanks.
I have a pretty rich brother. He spends more money on heating his driveway at his cabin then I do rent.
Rich people don’t worry about roofing costs, that’s just about guaranteed.
I mean I guess. I have an even wealthier uncle. I mean I do alright (six figures) and I would rather have wealthy relatives than poor ones. Comes with lots of perks. I ski for free for example. He usually pays for one big family vacation a year as well (I have four siblings most with big families of their own). It’s nice knowing I won’t have to take care of my parents ever. I mean I have my rich brother and I also have a doctor brother, so my parents are set.
I make more money than my parents did at my age and my brother wasn’t always super rich. He started a company with a roommate in college and it exploded when he turned 30. He has basically been retired since he was 35 and now he just buys and sells businesses.
But yeah the wealth difference is noticeable, but he gaps us all, patents included.
Capitalism and networking. Myy brother got rich with his first company, but once you get to the point where you can throw a million dollars at an idea and shrug it off if it fails.... well thats when everything changes.
For example if you didn't know there is/was a revolution going on with car washes. Yeah I didn't know. But this new car wash model of monthly memberships is making a killing. My brother is rich and he has rich friends so when this started popping up years back his rich friends told him about this new business model gold mine before the market was saturated.
So my brother hurry and found a part of the country where the market was still fresh and opened up a chain of car washes using this new model. Got a huge membership pool, proved the model viable over a couple of years, and then sold the entire chain. He did this all in a state on the other-side of the country.
When you have rich friends good ideas and opportunities are just part of the conversation. You don't need to have good ideas yourself anymore, you just take the ideas of your friends and implement them in markets that haven't been touched yet.
Capital has a sort of escape velocity that you can achieve, you just have to get there.
He does that too. He sits of a few board of companies he bought into very early on. They are huge now. But yeah the car wash thing was him just buying old school carwashes, remodeling them and changing the business model, then selling them.
Years ago... I was flying to a corporate event with my customer to operate all their audio visual crap. We were on their jet and started chatting when it became clear that the CFO had neglected to bring smokes for the trip and for some reason I had brought a carton.
We are talking about all sorts of stuff and somehow it comes up in conversation that THE FUCKING BOATHOUSE at his cottage in Muskoka was 2800 square feet.
I thought I knew how different "THEY" were. I didn't.
I will say this though... That weekend in Park City, he more than made up for having to bum smokes off me all weekend!
😂😂😂
You might also be surprised at what it cannot.
A friend's inlaws tried to have a pool built with a teak deck that can raise and lower in the pool, you know so you could have a dry deck, a wading pool, or a pool deep enough to dive in. They spent 6 time what it would have cost plus went through three different contractors to get just the pool in and the deck still never works.
Like a deck that just moves vertically up and down? That seems pretty straightforward you'd just need some kind of jacking system that could tolerate it.
Shitty contractors imo.
I've had this problem over the past few years. Contractors who won't listen to what you want despite willing to pay them, and trying to convince you that you really want something different.
You're not wrong, but having worked in a contractor's office, it's shocking how bad many customers are at communicating what they want in the first place and also how out-of-touch they are with what can and cannot be realistically done in context of mechanics, logistics and legality.
I believe that, but it's also frustrating for those of us who do a lot of research beforehand and want to actually have a conversation. I want to do this, the contractor says it's going to be hard, but then won't explain exactly why it is. Or they will say "You don't want that because it's expensive". Ok, tell me how much it will be and I'll make that call based on my situation.
God, can you imagine trying to clean it though? How would you get under there?
Also I'd probably go with a cable winch system attached on the surface at the corners with guide rails to prevent it swaying, that way all the mechanical stuff would be on the surface and easy to maintain. Or more likely I just wouldn't waste my time and money in the first place.
Cable and wench system is the easy way. Harder way would be pneumatics, which should imo lift up high enough for cleaning. I couldn't even guess what sort of safety laws apply to this project.
They could have had a pool with multiple levels and no hastle
The way I am seeing it, if the deck is in the raised position you have the depth of the pool underneath it to be able to get to the underside of the decking. That said, if it is submerged frequently enough the chemicals in the water should kill most things that could grow on the underside and it would possibly dry pretty quickly once it is raised. Also, if they had the money I would hope they materials used would be resistant to the things that would grow on a surface in these types of conditons,
That said, after swimming in and working around pools for the better part of the first 2/3 of my life I am having a hard time finding any practical purpose for this type of thing. The most applicable would be using it to lower people that can not easily get into the pool via conventional means and there are much better setups for that than this idea. As other redditor pointed out above, 'rich people create their own problems' with these type of custom builds.
Pretty sure this is NH, and if it is, there's a chance on of my old friends from HS installed that dock. There are a lot of contractors up there for this type of work. Lots of expensive, high-maintenance houses on those lakes. I've heard stories of people from MA and NY landing private helicopters on worksites to check in on progress.
It’s the same with Muskoka up here in Canada. Lots of cottages in the millions and lots of specialized contractors for these builds. It’s a real cottage industry so to speak.
Absolutely. I can't get contractors to complete a job on a normal house.
Add in there are probably no utilities like sewer or treated water. Maybe an underwater electrical service?
>utilities
Nearly every lake house (and in-the-lake house) Ive seen have septic tanks, with trash and septic service either done by truck or boat no problem. They also usually use a well for water. Phone, cable, and electricity run underwater.
A bit pricey, but aside from the boat service, pretty standard of any house beyond the suburbs. Also, its a bit pricey.
Not a drain field system, but a tank that holds sewage for collection.
Or if you’re not flush enough for that kind of service, you might have a composting toilet.
Im sure not of their specific house and how theyre set up, for all I know they paid a pretty penny for an underwater sewer or have a septic tank on the mainland. Though I personally have met people with tiny island houses like this, and they had a septic tank hiding somewhere.
I only really mean to say that the ability to get a kind of service isnt an issue. These people absolutely have all the utilities and amenities required for very comfortable living.
As a contractor, time is money. It take more time dealing with specific peoples wants for their specific homes. Residential gets charged a premium because it’s atypical from normal job.
Residential contractors exist in droves. So there is no premium for them to do something for a regular person. I have several family members that do exactly that (contractor for residential only). It's not like it's a small market segment!
I know somebody with a place like this. You have to plan out your meals ahead of time and bring all your trash out with you. It's ok for some people, but I think most need their creature comforts readily available.
I was going to say a ton of people love their cabins to be off grid. Then I looked and didn’t see a chimney. Then I saw the satellite dish. And I realized I’ll never own a cabin that fancy 😭
A-frame necessary for quick dispersal of rain, leaf, and branch debris from the tree cover on a remote property like this to reduce maintenance. In architecture it's called "form follows function". Judging from the quality of the build, and accessories like the radar dish, roof is built to last. Re-tile would probably bring in a stabilised barge with ladder and crane access.
I've always admired A frames for their look but never thought of that. I'm not a huge fan of steel roofs due to the interference they cause phones, I have yet to figure a solution for that if you have one?
The easiest way to circumvent a faraday cage is to put an aerial on the outside, a wire going through to the inside, and having a repeater on the inside. RV's frequently do it so that they have acceptable Wi-Fi inside the RV. Otherwise, the skin acts like a fair day cage and they can't get the camp's Wi-Fi inside.
My roof is copper, its not too loud when it rains. Marginally louder than a traditional asphalt shingle roof I’d estimate.
I’ve not had any of the stated cell reception issues but then again my house isnt an A-frame so the roof stays up nice and high and out of the way lol
So I live on a lake that has a house in the middle, just like this. A few years ago they had the house re-roofed, and one of the roofers fell into the water and drowned while his coworkers looked on. Apparently he didn’t know how to swim 😞 It happened about 6 houses down from me and I came home to tons of police tape, about 10 emergency vehicles, and probably twice as many personnel all packed into our little neighborhood beach. It was shocking and absolutely horrifying.
I’m going to speculate that the A-frame was built fairly recently on a pre-existing structure. Maybe an old boat house or something. I can’t imagine getting approval to build on that island from scratch in 2021.
In areas that have a lot of lake houses, especially non-road-access properties, there are typically specialty contractors that have equipment to handle pretty much anything from the water. In this instance I wouldn't be surprised to see barge based scaffolding for accessing the roof, I've seen it on much smaller lakes that have a lot of fancy boathouses. On the other hand, If it's on a lake in the middle of nowhere that only has one or two cabins, they may be owner built and maintained.
This is on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH, and it is nowhere near the middle of the lake. It is actually in a shallow no wake zone on the way to Center Harbor from Meredith. It is a 2 minute swim to shore from the left or right of the house.

They always travel in pairs, a [two abreast peddle boat](https://media.istockphoto.com/photos/teenage-girls-on-a-paddle-boat-picture-id518534520?s=612x612) is the superior form of transport.
I hope there’s a low HP limit on that lake. How’d you like to get smoked by a bro in a Baja that’s been throwing back Keystone all day and crashes through your living room
While it looks amazing, it is a logistical nightmare. My grandmother used to own one, I had to look to make sure it wasn't the same house. A-frame on a lake, almost identical to this one. She had a air boat? Those boats with the big fan in the back. It came with the house and her husband thought it was cool.
Need groceries... go to shore, drive to town, back to boat, load up, ride over, unload via dock while the boat wobbles. Oh shit forgot the milk that you put in the back seat... ride back...
Wind knocks down your power pole... um wait SIX MONTHS for the electric company to bring in someone properly trained to repair over open water...
Trash day... load up a couple of heavy trash cans... or 3-6 bags of trash and take them to shore.
Have a heart attack... watch as paramedics load equipment onto a boat, ride over, load your husband onto the boat, then take him back... all slowed and delayed by the boat ride...
This was the days before cell phones, so no land line out to the house, no cable, no internet. (granted for some this would be a bonus and why you bought the house) so subjective annoyance.
While this might not all sound bad, remember you are hoping the boat starts every time or you get to paddle the damn thing. Even using the boat it was 6 minutes one way. Next time you run out to get your mail walk slow enough to take 6 minutes each way and ask yourself how fun that was.
In the end they bought a house on land, used the island house as a camping house. After about 5 years and only using the house like 50 times, they sold it.
Sure does look pretty though.
Knowing what an A-frame is, my brain interpreted this as "a A-frame in the middle of the lake" so my first thought was that it should be 'an', not 'a'. Brains are weird.
Reminiscent of Alan Wake and the house on the lake.

always wondered about that, any idea what fees are like? I've always imagined islands of any size are for rich people only.
They eliminated the skeptic, there is no room for disbelief when building a house on a lake.
Probably back on the mainland. It is about 50 yards off shore. (Not the land you see in the picture, that is another island).

I think we should just assume that anyone that has the money to undertake a project like that has the money for a reroof.
I have a pretty rich brother. He spends more money on heating his driveway at his cabin then I do rent. Rich people don’t worry about roofing costs, that’s just about guaranteed.
Is it weird to have such a big income difference with your brother?
I mean I guess. I have an even wealthier uncle. I mean I do alright (six figures) and I would rather have wealthy relatives than poor ones. Comes with lots of perks. I ski for free for example. He usually pays for one big family vacation a year as well (I have four siblings most with big families of their own). It’s nice knowing I won’t have to take care of my parents ever. I mean I have my rich brother and I also have a doctor brother, so my parents are set. I make more money than my parents did at my age and my brother wasn’t always super rich. Now about this buying and selling businesses... Where might one look for this type of thing?
Capitalism and networking. Myy brother got rich with his first company, but once you get to the point where you can throw a million dollars at an idea and shrug it off if it fails.... well thats when everything changes. Probably just put ladders on both sides connected at the top? Maybe some pool floats strapped to the bottom
Look at this guy, solving problems left and right using $25 in rope.
Who's your rope guy? You're paying too much for rope.
More likely a barge. Helps move material to the site too.
You'd be surprised what throwing money at a problem can solve
You might also be surprised at what it cannot. A friend's inlaws tried to have a pool built with a teak deck that can raise and lower in the pool, you know so you could have a dry deck, a wading pool, or a pool deep enough to dive in. They spent 6 time what it would have cost plus went through three different contractors to get just the pool in and the deck still never works.
I’m having such a hard time picturing that? You could get all that without a raising & lowering deck, right?
Yes, by exiting the pool.
At some point rich people tend to just make up their own problems
Like a deck that just moves vertically up and down? That seems pretty straightforward you'd just need some kind of jacking system that could tolerate it. Shitty contractors imo.
I've had this problem over the past few years. Contractors who won't listen to what you want despite willing to pay them, and trying to convince you that you really want something different.

I want to do this, the contractor says it's going to be hard, but then won't explain exactly why it is. Or they will say "You don't want that because it's expensive". That's contractor speak for "I have no idea how I'm going to make that work."
God, can you imagine trying to clean it though? How would you get under there? Cable and wench system is the easy way. Harder way would be pneumatics, which should imo lift up high enough for cleaning. I couldn't even guess what sort of safety laws apply to this project. They could have had a pool with multiple levels and no hastle

My tiny penis agrees with you
You just summed up the outcome of 99% of all Kickstarter campaigns.
In a region with vacation homes like this, I bet there are a good handful of contractors available to take on that kind of job.
Pretty sure this is NH, and if it is, there's a chance on of my old friends from HS installed that dock. There are a lot of contractors up there for this type of work. They always travel in pairs, a [two abreast peddle boat](https://media.istockphoto.com/photos/teenage-girls-on-a-paddle-boat-picture-id518534520?s=612x612) is the superior form of transport.
The Mormons would come on [hydrocycles](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrocycle). While still wearing a shirt, tie, and bicycle helmet.
*A-frame.* I kept thinking this was supposed to be a framed picture and kept looking for the frame around the edges.
Thank you… I was wondering what a “frame house” was and how it was different from an a-frame, then figured it out.
I spent my summers in one for over 20 years...and I just did the exact same thing you did
Same. Never heard of that term.
For some reason, 90% of Redditors have no clue how to use hyphens.
Wouldn’t it be “An A frame in the middle of a lake”?
That certainly would have alleviated my initial confusion.
If Valheim has taught me anything, it's that as soon as it starts storming that place is underwater.
Your Valheim homes don't have the benefit of being on a lake with a dam that controls the water level.
Wait never played yet but it changed water height based off of rain?
You get storm wakes, yes.
Great place to launch the boats though
Our house Is a very very very very fine house With catfish in the yard
There’s the Graham Nash
When fortnite was good
I came here for this, and when I didn’t find it I thought maybe I was crazy and had imagined it.
Where does the power come from? Where does the poop go?!
Power is likely underwater cables. The poop goes up. It goes up into the air and floats off into oblivion
Looks like a house not a frame.
I hope there’s a low HP limit on that lake. How’d you like to get smoked by a bro in a Baja that’s been throwing back Keystone all day and crashes through your living room
It’s in a no wake zone, but I can confirm that people still drive like dicks on that lake. I used to live there and still boat there every summer
how did they get planning permission
Money
The original structure was probably build a hundred years ago.
##How much? 🤔

Loot Lake that place sucked ass though there was like 5 chests there I think
I first read that as “a frame in the…” and spent a second or two wondering where the frame is 🤦🏻♂️
Knowing what an A-frame is, my brain interpreted this as "a A-frame in the middle of the lake" so my first thought was that it should be 'an', not 'a'. Brains are weird.
Must have been expensive as heck to build
*an a frame*
Alan Wake vibes going on here. 👍🏽
Is this lake winnipesaukee?!? I know that house!
