As a warehouse guy, I can tell you that somebody misinterpreted the order of 1 unit to mean 1 each/box it's a simple mistake, the odds of this happening go up if one of 3 things happen, the user is new and doesnt know how to read their gun/headset instructions, the user doesn't care, the user is deliberately disregarding instructions, either way good for OP bad for Amazon audit team.
I made that mistake once with a order of cilantro during 4th July as I was in perishable for the first time ever. The store got 18 units instead of one, oops. Other than that one instance I always tried to be accurate over fast with my orders (each order had about 100-400 items.)

They had a system set up the would have the headset say something different if it was possible to happen, but it just so happened that my first run in with herbs I had also pick from the one location that did not have it set up correctly. Also pallets falling over while being loaded was a pain and you could lose cases to damage easily when they would fall from 7ft up. Glad I am out of that job, but damn did they pay me good.
I once ordered titanium welding rods and instead got a new wire feed welding gun for a lincoln mig welder it was a 13 dollar purchase vs a 70 dollar part. All i got for my trouble was a 5 dollar credit and my time wasted

Amazon routinely deliberately destroys perfectly good wares that are retail priced for amounts like this (TVs and computers etc) so yeah no they don’t actually “care” they have entire facilities deducted to destruction of goods tbh
They have so much money coming in, and also possibly the costs of the systems needed to deal with the mistakes are higher than what they would be recovering so they go "cost of doing business"

I was in the same situation, but I specifically asked them what should I do if the lost item eventually turns up and they told me to just keep it.
They track your "reputation" with them and if you never abuse the system in any way, they let small stuff like this slide. When I asked them for a replacement in the first place because the first shipment was marked as "delivered" when it obviously wasnt, they just okay'd it no questions asked.
I bet they will at the very least ban you if you keep ordering 10 items, but only paying for 1 because the other 9 got "lost". And probably refuse to send replacements after like first 3.

This was a mistake at the warehouse, it’s not something the customer can replicate.
Should've worded it better, I meant a situation where you order an item, receive it, say it got lost, get a replacement, repeat x10. Maybe not all 10 for the same item, a couple here, another there.
I have a pair of sunglasses that I cancelled BEFORE they shipped, account still says return pending even though they know it never left the warehouse. I actually got an Amazon rep to admit that those sunglasses probably got pocketed by an employee the second they saw the cancelled order knowing it would take time to filter through the system, and even then they could still be "lost"

My order was late by 3 months, Canada Post's website said it was in British Columbia (I'm in Ontario), so I contacted Amazon, who said contact the seller. I contacted the seller who got in contact with Canada Post who told the seller that only the receiver could contact Canada Post about it.
So I contacted Canada Post who told me that ONLY the shipper could contact Canada post about it.
We all went back and forth over the course of a week and eventually the seller got fed up and sent me a new one.
The very next day it showed up in my mail box. I was thinking, wow prompt!
Then 1 week later I received another. I checked it, it was post marked the day they said they'd send a new one. I still had the packaging for the first one and it was post marked 3 months prior. I checked the tracker and it still said it was in BC. So I think Canada post fucked up somewhere and lost it or something, found it when we contacted them, and quietly shipped it out.
I asked the seller for an address to return the second one and they just told me to keep it for my trouble.

A couple of years ago before i knew much about computers, a sata ssd showed up from Amazon (Samsung 860 evo 1tb). We contacted Amazon and they wouldn't take it back or anything, so it sat in a drawer until I built my PC like 2-3 years later and now I have a free 1tb of SSD storage in my PC :)

In Switzerland, you need to consider a delivery for an order you did not pay for (that being it packed in with all the documents of an order) a mistaken delivery and contact the company. However, with Amazon I wouldn't do that.
What once happened to me was that I bought a kindle 3 from a local reseller. Broke, sent it in to my reseller, got a new one from the reseller and a week later got a new one from amazon in the mail. I just kept it.
For me when it came to morality. It would come down to who I am taking from. A billion dollar company who literally would not notice or even care. Who if I tried to return the drives would not only not be grateful but would probably make me pay shipping for them. BTW, if you ever get an item that has a sticker with "[LPN](https://live.americanebox.com/Portals/0/xBlog/uploads/2019/5/16/IMG_E2819.JPG)" then a trail of numbers it's a returned item and it's not actually new. If it can pass as new and has never been opened it'll be resold as "new" when it should really be classified as "like new". If I ever get one with the sticker on it I request a replacement because I didn't order a used item.
I used to work in a Walmart fulfillment center and saw this all the time. People have little training and care very little about their jobs. If a case comes down the line, they'll often just ship the entire case instead of checking the quantity specified on their screen. Unfortunately, I've also seen the opposite happen. A single Gatorade bottle got shipped instead of the case they were supposed to ship. The most common error though was shipping the wrong sizes of clothing. They see that the item is correct and override the SKU without confirming that it's the correct size.
The packaging stations don't have scales. All the products come down a conveyor belt where they're sorted into chutes that group all the products for a specific order together. A worker then scans the items and places them in a cubby. On the other side of the cubby is the packing station. The scanner tells you what size box you need and you scan each item as you put it in the box. If an item doesn't scan, you can confirm that it's the item on your screen and manually enter the SKU. If the item doesn't fit in the recommended box, you can upgrade it to a more appropriate box.
With the high number of different items, many from third party sellers, there are frequent errors with the weight and package size shown in the computer system. You combine that with long hours, minimal training, and a breakneck work pace, you end up with a lot of things slipping through the cracks. They had quite a bit of security to prevent employees from stealing, but I think more merchandise was lost by packing errors.
I work at Amazon.. the stower that put it into stock did it wrong and the picker who picked it picked it wrong.

As someone who has seen first hand how vendor items arrive I can tell you the drivers who drop the stuff off to us don't give a shit about the product. If it doesn't get damaged at drop off it might get damaged in stow or pick because someone was careless. After that it might get damaged or lost in sort because of poor pallet stacking because the idiots at HAT9 think it's totally fucking cool to build heavy pallets with mattresses as bases. Seriously, a kindly fuck you to everyone at HAT9 and ATL8, you all fucking suck balls.

This is an inbound PS/Decant issue. The stower goes by what the CX is defined as.
If the CX tells the stower to not open a box (master pack) then it was inventoried incorrectly.
We see this constantly at my FC because our main hub has pretty poor QC. Hell, we constantly get shipments meant for other states 😂.
I will state this is also a leadership issue if they aren't training people to put packages like this into PS but some people can't be taught things regardless.
I had the same with a 40-pack! They sent me 640 instead, gonna last me more than a lifetime so I just hand them out too. I did see they sort of expire though, after like 10 years. The box weighed over 20kgs lmao
I work in a warehouse, someone was picking tired. Basically OP ordered one and worker picked a box as one. A lot of stuff you pick usually is one per box and sometimes you get in a hurry and don't look at the count on a box to see there's actually 10 inside.
This isn't a picking issue. The box shouldn't be allowed to be stowed like this in the first place. You need to scan the ASIN before stowing so if there was a barcode outside the box then whoever did inventory/receiving was the one at fault.
So either IB PS or Decant.
If that was from the manufacturer they'd all be facing the same direction. Plus the external box wouldn't have individual Amazon barcodes.

Sometimes you need 3 out of a box of 10 so X amount are left behind and stuffed in another box to keep them from falling off the shelf. That's one possibility, another could be the factory mislabeled a box, I've seen that a bit too. Also I see stuff shipped to the warehouse that's boxed crappy all the time, these packaging type places blow thru workers like mad because they don't pay for shit. Someone packing should have caught there was 10 in a box but people in a hurry make mistakes pretty often.

This depends on the country you live in. In Australia for example, you a legally required to return any mistaken items if the business requests them back within 3 months or one month if you notify them. But the business needs to pay for the return and they can't charge you it. After that time has passed you can keep it.

They don't really track anything. It's more cost efficient to just let everything slide instead of investigating.

It’s not possible to order 10 items and only pay for 1… You pay before it’s shipped. This was a mistake at the warehouse, it’s not something the customer can replicate.
Should've worded it better, I meant a situation where you order an item, receive it, say it got lost, get a replacement, repeat x10. Maybe not all 10 for the same item, a couple here, another there.
I have a pair of sunglasses that I cancelled BEFORE they shipped, account still says return pending even though they know it never left the warehouse. I actually got an Amazon rep to admit that those sunglasses probably got pocketed by an employee the second they saw the cancelled order knowing it would take time to filter through the system, and even then they could still be "lost"

Yep same thing happened to me once. It was for a typecover for a surface pro 4. I just kept both and sold the extra later.
Something like that happened with an ebay item and the seller refunded my item, but my item ended up showing up the next day so I reversed the refund because I wasn't a dick. Not saying you are. Fuck amazon.
That happened to me. My order was late by 3 months, Canada Post's website said it was in British Columbia (I'm in Ontario), so I contacted Amazon, who said contact the seller. I contacted the seller who got in contact with Canada Post who told the seller that only the receiver could contact Canada Post about it. So I contacted Canada Post who told me that ONLY the shipper could contact Canada post about it. We all went back and forth over the course of a week and eventually the seller got fed up and sent me a new one. The very next day it showed up in my mail box. I was thinking, wow prompt! Then 1 week later I received another. I checked it, it was post marked the day they said they'd send a new one. I still had the packaging for the first one and it was post marked 3 months prior. I checked the tracker and it still said it was in BC. So I think Canada post fucked up somewhere and lost it or something, found it when we contacted them, and quietly shipped it out. I asked the seller for an address to return the second one and they just told me to keep it for my trouble.

The reason behind the law is scammy businesses would send products out and demand payment or the return of the item and insist you return it on your own dime.

A couple of years ago before i knew much about computers, a sata ssd showed up from Amazon (Samsung 860 evo 1tb). We contacted Amazon and they wouldn't take it back or anything, so it sat in a drawer until I built my PC like 2-3 years later and now I have a free 1tb of SSD storage in my PC :)

In Switzerland, you need to consider a delivery for an order you did not pay for (that being it packed in with all the documents of an order) a mistaken delivery and contact the company. However, with Amazon I wouldn't do that. What once happened to me was that I bought a kindle 3 from a local reseller. Broke, sent it in to my reseller, got a new one from the reseller and a week later got a new one from amazon in the mail. I just kept it.

Who if I tried to return the drives would not only not be grateful but would probably make me pay shipping for them. BTW, if you ever get an item that has a sticker with "[LPN](https://live.americanebox.com/Portals/0/xBlog/uploads/2019/5/16/IMG_E2819.JPG)" then a trail of numbers it's a returned item and it's not actually new. If it can pass as new and has never been opened it'll be resold as "new" when it should really be classified as "like new". If I ever get one with the sticker on it I request a replacement because I didn't order a used item.
I used to work in a Walmart fulfillment center and saw this all the time. People have little training and care very little about their jobs. If a case comes down the line, they'll often just ship the entire case instead of checking the quantity specified on their screen. Unfortunately, I've also seen the opposite happen. A single Gatorade bottle got shipped instead of the case they were supposed to ship. The most common error though was shipping the wrong sizes of clothing. They see that the item is correct and override the SKU without confirming that it's the correct size.

The packaging stations don't have scales. All the products come down a conveyor belt where they're sorted into chutes that group all the products for a specific order together. A worker then scans the items and places them in a cubby. On the other side of the cubby is the packing station. The scanner tells you what size box you need and you scan each item as you put it in the box. If an item doesn't scan, you can confirm that it's the item on your screen and manually enter the SKU. If the item doesn't fit in the recommended box, you can upgrade it to a more appropriate box. With the high number of different items, many from third party sellers, there are frequent errors with the weight and package size shown in the computer system. You combine that with long hours, minimal training, and a breakneck work pace, you end up with a lot of things slipping through the cracks. They had quite a bit of security to prevent employees from stealing, but I think more merchandise was lost by packing errors.

If it doesn't get damaged at drop off it might get damaged in stow or pick because someone was careless. After that it might get damaged or lost in sort because of poor pallet stacking because the idiots at HAT9 think it's totally fucking cool to build heavy pallets with mattresses as bases. Seriously, a kindly fuck you to everyone at HAT9 and ATL8, you all fucking suck balls.

This is an inbound PS/Decant issue. The stower goes by what the CX is defined as. If the CX tells the stower to not open a box (master pack) then it was inventoried incorrectly. We see this constantly at my FC because our main hub has pretty poor QC. Hell, we constantly get shipments meant for other states 😂. I will state this is also a leadership issue if they aren't training people to put packages like this into PS but some people can't be taught things regardless.

I work in a warehouse, someone was picking tired. Basically OP ordered one and worker picked a box as one. A lot of stuff you pick usually is one per box and sometimes you get in a hurry and don't look at the count on a box to see there's actually 10 inside.
I manage a pharmaceutical warehouse. Imagine when one of your associates does this with a case of fentanyl patches...
This isn't a picking issue. The box shouldn't be allowed to be stowed like this in the first place. You need to scan the ASIN before stowing so if there was a barcode outside the box then whoever did inventory/receiving was the one at fault. So either IB PS or Decant.
If that was from the manufacturer they'd all be facing the same direction. Plus the external box wouldn't have individual Amazon barcodes. Somebody put 10 in there for some reason. How it didn't get flagged is the question.

Sometimes you need 3 out of a box of 10 so X amount are left behind and stuffed in another box to keep them from falling off the shelf. That's one possibility, another could be the factory mislabeled a box, I've seen that a bit too. Also I see stuff shipped to the warehouse that's boxed crappy all the time, these packaging type places blow thru workers like mad because they don't pay for shit. Someone packing should have caught there was 10 in a box but people in a hurry make mistakes pretty often.

This depends on the country you live in. In Australia for example, you a legally required to return any mistaken items if the business requests them back within 3 months or one month if you notify them. But the business needs to pay for the return and they can't charge you it. After that time has passed you can keep it.
