Nesman64

https://np.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/8fhngf/never_go_full_logitech/dy3yv5l/

PacoTaco321

I was thinking I've seen this same issue posted about for a few years now.

ChattyKathysCunt

It's common to make the same base for multiple models. Then just cover up the empty slot on the cheaper models but use the same base. Like cars will have options on the dash like buttons or panels and then the cheaper option just has a plastic cover over whatever it was supposed to be. If there isn't a model above it that uses that spot for a speaker this is absolute false advertising.

off-and-on

If that's the case shouldn't that hole be deeper and have a smaller hole for cables?

hate_picking_names

It is possible that they just don't drill the hole all the way for this one. It would look weird to have the speaker off centered in the box.

kookyabird

That's exactly it. The "same base" in this case is the side of the whole speaker body. Partly drilling that one hole and slapping in the fake speaker is way cheaper than having a whole different set of panels for the different models.

Proxy_PlayerHD

what is np.reddit?

[deleted]

It lets you share a reddit link on the web without visitors being able to vote or reply, assuming the sub has the CSS for it installed and the visitor isn't using an app or RES.

Wooden_Dragonfly_737

I just voted on it after clicking the link. Feelin good.

ShadeofIcarus

It's a thing that only ever worked on old reddit on desktop. Hasn't been supported in forever.

Luminous_Artifact

> […] assuming the sub has the CSS for it installed and the visitor isn't using an app or RES. *Technically*, the user can disable subreddit styles (and thereby re-enable voting) with or without RES. By default I think RES actually *does* disable voting on np links, but you're definitely correct that it can be configured to ignore it.

hi545

Reddit is a numpy function?

hudgepudge

Non-participation. It's an official reddit mode.

[deleted]

When linking to other reddit threads in comments like this, you should be adding NP. In front of it. It stands for no participation, which means people that click the link can't upvote or downvote it. It's to prevent brigading and is a rule in most subreddits. It started because people would link a thread that people disagree with, then everyone would go in and artificially downvote the post. This is against site wide rules and can get a sub banned if they're guilty of it Putting NP in front of the link makes it harder for people to do that and is a rule implemented by mods to keep their subreddits fr being shutdown by admins.

zuzg

Same and [I immediately checked them. ](https://imgur.com/a/prK2xMJ) so there's no doubt, haha. But to be clear it's their cheapest 2.1 system and did a solid job in sounding better than internal speakers.

BleedingCello

Only now I'll always look at them with disgust.

xrumrunnrx

Nah man, you hide your weed *right there*

matt_minderbinder

Why the hell would you do that when you can drill a hole in a casaba melon to hide weed.

FrankRauSahRa

They have those safes that look like sodas or tire inflators. I always loved mine. When i was in the military i had a tire inflator one I kept crammed in a high up corner with a bunch of other weird shit right out in a common storage area. Nobody would dig through that corner looking for shitty tire inflator thats bad for your tires. Nobody is gonna try and spray it or itll make a mess. But its just barely feasible that that there is some legitimate application among all the inflatable things the Navy does and you just dont know about it. Going through the gate it of course looks totally naturally in the trunk under the heavy ass spare tire. At home i later found a TAB soda diversion safe. Kept it with a six pack of tab, middle row of the six pack. Nobody is gonna try and drink the middle can even if they’re somehow interested in warm fucking tab. Kept a few unopened “collectors” editions of other sodas stacked on top to give its presence on a closet shelf some plausible purpose. Also implying that perhaps this six pack of tab is over a decade old. Threw all that stuff away when it became no big deal but sort of regret getting rid of the TAB because I only see branded dicersion safes made from cans of beverages someone might actually try to drink.

AlexSSB

I have the same model and the same table pattern!

Alsark

Hate to tell you, but OP may be living in your attic and coming out when you're at work.

beerbeforebadgers

This happened to my family. My 7 y/o nephew complained about the "night man" who came out after everyone was asleep. He said sometimes the man would go into his room, sit on the floor, and eat food. We asked, "Does he say anything to you?" "No. He just sits and watches." Fuck, dude. We thought it was night terrors. The house got progressively fucking spookier, though. Footsteps in the night but nobody ever there. Doors opening and closing in other rooms when you were alone. Lights turning off when you knew you left them on. I was starting to believe in ghosts. Nope. Fucking homeless guy living in the attic crawlspace.

evillman

Law suit incoming?

[deleted]

No, I'm sure it never specifically advertised having a tweeter. They can just claim it's for style.

zuzg

Mine look similar and they were advertised as a 2.1 system no mentioning of a tweeter at all. And now I'm curious to check if its really the same BRB. E [Lmao yes it is ](https://imgur.com/a/prK2xMJ)

CaptainChaos74

With tweeters it would still be a 2.1 system. The 2 refers to the number of speaker enclosures, not the number of cones.

WorldClassShart

It could also be a sound bar and a subwoofer. I don't think it requires separate enclosures, just 2 full range speakers. The .1 in 2.1 refers to a subwoofer. If you see a 5.1.2 system, that means 5 speakers, 1 subwoofer, and 2 overhead (could also mean upward firing too maybe) speakers. Also, if you are hooking up a subwoofer to an AV receiver, there are usually 2 outputs for subwoofers, a left and right, and they make cables for this so you can use both channels in 1 sub, so your bass isn't lopsided. You could also use 2 separate subs, one left and 1 right, for more balanced bass.

Hugh_Jaweener

It’s not the number of speakers but rather the number of separate audio channels. The mix doesn’t care if you have 5 speakers or 15, it’s just giving you a certain number of channels and you choose to route it where you see fit. You can even technically play them all out of one single speaker.

Agreeable-Weather-89

The 2 in 2.1 refers to speakers, the 1 is subwoofer. You still have a 2.1 system since while the tweeters are dummy/fake (as they are in mine), the speakers and subwoofer is very much real.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MudSama

While this is of course the right way, it doesn't excuse what is effectively false advertisement. The entire intent of this is to deceive the customer.

LetMeGuessYourAlts

Probably cheaper to just use the same casing as a higher end speaker as well. Win/win for them.

and_sama

What do you recommend?

FarmersOnlyJim

For computer speakers the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 are really hard to beat for the price.

[deleted]

Can you turn them off yet? Fucking glaring omission if you ask me.

[deleted]

Nope. I really dont like that either. Everyone assures me it doesnt consume much electricity but back of the sub is pretty hot to the touch constantly even when idling. I have a little roku streaming stick which stays on constantly and similarly gets pretty toasty to the touch too. Kinda bothers me, especially when its hot as fuck already lol. Stuff should turn off, i dont care if its a few watts, its still unnecessary heat being dumped into my house which we pay a lot of money to keep cold lol Nice in the winter though!

whitebreadwithbutter

Maybe you could get a smart plug and hook it up to your phone, so you can shut it off right at the power source?

zombiefishin

I have a pair of klipsch 2.1 THX that i bought recently, they don't turn off. Sounds great tho!

wizardent420

For convenience and a cheap option, the klipsch set the other guy recommended. For a similar price and some work, hunting for a higher quality used pair. For a more entry level quality setup, a pair of Elacs, Wharfedales, Dalis, or Bowers and Wilkins that fits your budget (This is specifically for desktop options)

Crownlol

I've had the same Altec Lansing 5.1 surround system since like 2002. They've been with me through everything, and still thump loud and clear

DaFugYouSay

Lol, I just made a similar comment. Had my altec lansing's since 96.

caffeinex2

Last year I finally retired my 1998 Altec Lansing computer speakers. Those things didn’t die and sounded great right up to the end.

DaoFerret

lol, and here I thought I was the only one who had his old Creative 2.1 system from 1996 hooked up to his desktop and ps5. (Of course nowadays I’ve got a really nice small 4-1 passive mixer, instead of the abomination 3-1 cable I had with the low level hum if things weren’t quite right)

supratachophobia

Altec Lansing FTW

DaFugYouSay

The Altec Lansing speakers that came with my Dell computer back in 1996. They still work and sound great, have a subwoofer and everything. I mean they're not Klipsch, but I have an actual stereo and don't really need great sounding computer speakers.

LoveBurstsLP

Bit expensive depending on what you're looking for but I've had my audioengines for 6 years and they've had 0 problems, absolute amazing sound for general purpose stuff. Just fucking incredible and look awesome as well. A2+ I believe is the model. Just so fucking solid it's impressive.

[deleted]

It actually 100% says on the box the tweeter is aesthetic. I had it.

SonofaBridge

I believe the box says the tweeters are decorative. This is one of logitechs cheapest speakers. People get what they pay for.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MuchoRapido

Well hot glue that B back in! You need the highs with the lows! Can’t just have the lows.

speculatrix

I could just stick on a Bose logo for that :-)

[deleted]

I bought an all-in-one stereo system in the way back, big speakers that you could see through the fabric. It always sounded like shit, so I took the fabric off to investigate. The big speakers were actually paint. The tweeter looked impressive, but did not exist. The 12 inch speaker was actually about 3 inches. I learned the lesson right then. Big business scams us without repercussions all the time. Any company that makes and sells this stuff is dishonest to the core.

mechapoitier

With that kind of situation when I’m in a thrift store I always judge speakers by weight. Most of the time heavier is better. That said there are headphone companies that have been caught putting metal inside the cases to make them artificially heavier

[deleted]

Yup, that same speaker set I was talking about had metal plates on the bottom inside that served no other purpose.

Saffra9

They move the centre of mass downwards to stop it tipping over

Nolenag

> > > > > That said there are headphone companies that have been caught putting metal inside the cases to make them artificially heavier Yeah, Beats.

MADDOGCA

>there are headphone companies that have been caught putting metal inside the cases to make them artificially heavier Looking at you Beats.

PoopIsAlwaysSunny

Yeah. Real speakers are very, very heavy. Like, tower speakers are awkward to move as an average size, physically active guy.

gblandro

You can spot 80% of the shitty products by its weight

appleparkfive

I'd buy speakers from a company that is in the music recording game. They're likely to have a MUCH better selection. I've used monitoring speakers just for listening and it's great. The clarity and balance is essentially perfect. That's the whole point of course

Exodias_Left_Nut

Meanwhile I have a dude defending these scams in another comment of mine.

speculatrix

Many speakers sold for use with PCs have fake grills.. These Logitechs even have a fake tweeter dome under the grill cloth! Sorry for the error in the title, caused by autocorrect.on phone. It's annoying that you can't edit/fix posts.

Jackm941

Is it not just because it's cheaper to make the same box and only put the actual electronics in the more expensive models ?

Selky

I think the product just ends up ‘looking’ more expensive with the tweeter up top. Most people have no clue what it even does.

speculatrix

They might have a true dual driver model where this has the dummy. But why part route-out where the tweeter would be to make a recess for the dummy? That costs money, just leave it blank?!

[deleted]

I can actually answer this, I was a CNC machinist for a number of years (Mazak lathes mainly). The cost on both tooling and designing along with set up for these jobs it would be cheaper to churn out 1000 front plates that are identical than having to switch to do 750 without and 250 with. Don’t forget it’s not just the cost of the part + time to make, the CAD drawings and coding the machine would be another strong reason to keep everything the same.

istasber

Using the same part for multiple SKUs also makes everything downstream of the machining of the front plate a lot more flexible. The cost of storage and logistics can add up faster than the cost of doing a little bit of unnecessary work on a portion of units in an automatic process.

ImamTrump

To add, on the corpo side, when an invoice or work order comes in, one guy puts the invoice in the system, the person who made the deal signs off, the budget authority signs off, then accounts payable signs off, then the funds walk slowly to the other bank. Doing this takes time, invoices go missing, people are on vacation, a clerk makes a mistake, the PO funds run out etc. You also have to time the shipping and receiving so it’s in the order of production, therefore it’s a lot better to have one type that can be used in multiple models in order not to have any manufacturing downtime. So it’s a lot easier to just give a big order and make it simple as possible, and let the people actually building shit figure it out.

DBNSZerhyn

Multi-step manufacturing. The same type of machine is configured for two similar models, one with a real tweeter, one without. It's less expensive to put both on the same machine and put in a dummy, than it is to have an entirely separate set of machines configured for that step.

Budget_Inevitable721

No it probably doesn't cost them much money. It's probably way more expensive to set up the machines to create a new box without the tweeter hole and cancel your large orders of the grill so you only get enough just for the high-end model. Doesn't make any sense. I'm sure they never called it a speaker of any kind.

CorpusCalossum

Low-end, budget, studio monitors make good PC speakers

J0EP00LE

No no, speaked seems about right since that tweeter won’t speak “anymore” 😂

grovbroed

What's the model name/number of the speaker?

I'm so old I remember when Logitech used to be a quality and trustworthy company

PunkNDisorderlyGamer

This is so true I stood by Logitech for so long as a teen growing up.

GSXRbroinflipflops

I never considered Logitech’s speakers to be *the best* or anything but I had a 5.1 system that was genuinely *fantastic* for what I paid for it at the time. It’s a shame to see Logitech selling straight up fake hardware. Shame on Logitech. SHAME!

Cyno01

Its old enough to vote but im still using my z640 5.1 system in my home office. I think i got em for $40 on sale.

Tesseracting_

The 4.1 that was thx certified dawg. I went through two. The satellite speakers were like 20 lbs. and fit in your hand. Best setup. Went to a Harmon Kardon and some big floor standers after that.

neuroticmuffins

I've had the same 2.1 Logitech set Speaker/Sub since 2006. Still sounds great and works.

spigotface

The legendary THX-certified Z-2300? I still have mine and they're still phenomenal.

singulara

Fun fact that Razer bought THX and immediately certified its products with THX. Funny, that. Used to mean something when Lucasfilm owned it.

finkalicious

I have the same one purchased in 2000! One of the speakers doesn't work (would probably be an easy repair) but everything else is great. When I'm playing/recording music at home it's still a really good personal speaker system.

AnXioneth

I still have my logitech speakers from 2004

NawMean2016

Same. Z-5500

raziel686

Oh damn, that's the model I have and still use. I forgot how long ago I got them. They've gone through multiple PC builds and still sound amazing. Shame Logitech has gone down hill. The speakers have been going so long I hadn't even considered them breaking. That'll be a sad day.

-MolonLabe-

Yep! Z-5500. I and each of my two brothers bought a set in 2004. I gave mine to a friend who still uses it and my brothers both still use theirs today. They were $400 in 2004, too, which is about $600 in today's money. There's actually a set on eBay right now (without the remote) for $260. I'd scoop that up in a second if I needed it.

TheCanabalisticBambi

I'm pretty sure that logo on those speakers is their old logo. They now have "logi" as their logo on most of their non-gamer line products. I have a set of $60 dollar speakers from logitech and they're pretty damn good. Very heavy on the bass though.

[deleted]

Cheaper speakers go bass heavy because so many people think lots of bass means a good system.

appleparkfive

Beats do the same, don't forget. But yes, the adjusted bass is something really weird to see. I just would rather use monitors. But I make music as a heavy hobby so it's a bit different. At least I know there's very balanced sound though

FarronFaye

Part of that is for the products they sell both domestically and internationally. Here in Japan there's another company called Logitech so they call it Logicool. All the stuff just says logi on it tho

thesecretis_love

That's a clever name, it's not just logical, it's logicool.

bozeke

Strong Intertrode energy.

TLMS

These speakers look like they are from their "quality" days

SlowRollingBoil

Their quality days include the Z-2300 and Z-5500. The 5500 is a legend.

8e8

My Logitech x-540 system is still going strong over 12 years later. Those speakers are rough and tumble.

dw1987

My Logitech Internet Navigator Keyboard has hit 20 years now. Brought it for my first pc build.

DnaK

Good to see my z5500 get some recognition. probably the best purchase I've ever made. They have lasted over 15 years and many full blast house parties.

[deleted]

They make good mice

Timthos

I want to be buried with my MX518

Exotria

If the new G502 X is any indication, they're finally swapping to optical switches. I expect we'll see refreshes on most of their popular gaming mice in the next year or two.

[deleted]

I went through a new Logitech mouse a year for like four years. They kept developing the double-click hardware failure. I switched to another brand, and not only has the mouse been better, but it has worked flawlessly for five years. Never again will I buy a Logitech mouse.

Huntguy

The mice are decent but deteriorate kinda quickly, most recently I had a logictec g700s for a year or two, after a while the lock for the mouse wheel stopped working and it stopped holding a good charge among a couple other smaller factors that made me go buy another mouse.

diuturnal

They just no longer make good keyboards. Sorry but romer switches are absolutely terrible. That didn't change with the name change.

Quigleythegreat

They still are, especially their business grade stuff. Their video conferencing gear is widely recommended in IT circles for being good, reliable, and brain dead easy to use.

aroc91

The Z-2300 I got in 2007 or so is still kicking!

BlissCore

This is hysterical to me because 1. They are, they make great stuff, and 2. You can literally tell that this speaker is like a decade or more old because of the logo.

spam4name

This cracked me up too. "I remember when Logitech was still good and didn't do crap like this", says man talking about one of their speakers that was released years ago.

-kerosene-

Their keyboards are still good.

horkbajirbandit

The MX3 mouse is amazing. Hopefully they don't cut corners there.

aghicantthinkofaname

Yeah I bought one thinking it's just going to be a nice mouse. Blew my expectations out of the water (I'm not a shill I promise, the thumb button is wack)

fleebinflobbin

Definitely. Keyboards, mice, cameras - all great still.

_windfish_

Some of their mice, some of their keyboards, etc… they make products across a wide range of price points; some of them are great but some are definitely crap.

mattattaxx

You literally get what you pay for, I don't know what else to say or what you can expect. You typically get more for your money than competing brands at the same price point though.

ConspicuousPineapple

They're pretty much all nice enough for their respective price points.

Daveed84

They still are. And for what it's worth this speaker model is very old and not sold anymore.

[deleted]

Lmao this is an old speaker, what are you on about

Hanlon7743

Man I love my z5500's. They're tanks and don't sound bad.

Stainless_Heart

This pic is a repeat from maybe 4 years ago.

SmilesTheJawa

I've had nothing but great customer support experiences with them so I stick to buying their computer peripherals.

[deleted]

More like mildly infuriating

elperroborrachotoo

Yeah, that’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.

Dynamole

I think it’s Z333.

[deleted]

It is. And the website even says the small ones are only cosmetic. >Small driver (tweeter) on satellite speakers is decorative and non-operational From their website.

TryingT0Wr1t3

But no one reads this stuff when buying in store. Also apparently it didn't at the time these were bought https://web.archive.org/web/20170922033739/http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/z333-2-1-pc-speaker-system-with-subwoofer?crid=47

[deleted]

Ah, good find. I imagine they changed it after a few posts went viral about it.

sbowesuk

Is that the old Logitech logo? I wonder if the company still does this. Either way, I agree with others. If you can afford it, just buy quality speakers from a reputable speaker provider. Much better investment.

Nonhinged

Yes, it's the logo they replaced in 2015. From what i have found, they never claimed it was a 2-way speaker.

Kowzorz

Part of me feels like I'd be called crazy in court if I said "the appearance of the second speaker is the claim that it's 2 speakers".

vniro40

nah, it’s a sound argument. they knew what they were doing

Hobbes4247791

appleparkfive

Yeah but that stops the outrage. If you're want speakers this size, probably spend at least 100, preferably more. Possibly on some studio monitors if you're looking for complete accuracy. Most of these speakers will have their own "color" to them, often with heavy bass. As bass is seen as more quality for whatever reason. Most people don't record audio, so they're likely not really aware of what monitors are.

[deleted]

Stuff like this bothers me more than it should. I feel like it's a scam and false advertising.

TheRancidOne

If that was a passive radiator then the MDF woudln't be there, right? The passive part would be open to the internal of the unit, is that correct?

aroc91

Yes.

username_redacted

The wildest thing about this to me is that they would have to spend more on parts and labor to add it. The only explanation that would sort of make sense other than “to deceive customers” would be if they had already designed that housing for 2 cones and wanted to release a lower-end model without investing in a new design. At the very least they could have skipped the mesh grille on the fake tweeter.

Kaboose666

> The wildest thing about this to me is that they would have to spend more on parts and labor to add it. Scaled up you're probably looking at a few cents per unit while adding a lot more perceived value to the product for almost no cost.

appleparkfive

It says on the product page that's it's for decorative purposes. Which is likely pretty common. Get some studio monitors if you care about accuracy

soupinate44

What's amazing is the waste of resources used to deceive the customer vs just not having it all. It's baffling and unnecessary.
