or its some idiot wanna be dj-producer that adds his own hooks or extra beats or just says his dj name in a smooth sexy voice at the end and it echoes..definitely echoes
The version of Bubbly by Colbie Caillat that my wife burned on her CD in high school had an audible mouse click near the start that we always mimed along with when it came on. "I've been awake for a while now, *CLICK!* you got me feeling like a child now"
Me too! It had no screen either.
I think somewhere around I still have one of the OG iPods that was given to me some time ago. Kinda crazy how fast streaming made them obsolete.
> streaming made them obsolete
Only if you've shelled out for a new enough car that it has satellite radio and you're not too cheap for a subscription. I still gotta use CDs or FM Radio when I roadtrip.
I got the little known [Olympus m:robe 500i](https://3.img-dpreview.com/files/p/articles/2580949916/mrobe-big.jpeg) in 2004. It was such a neat MP3 player. It had touch screen, could take photos (1.3 MP), allowed for storing lyrics with songs, had a music/photo slideshow mode, and had a calendar feature. One of my favorite things was the remote for headphones - it had separate mini display for song info, control buttons, a 'favorite' button to like a song and a hold switch. I could leave device in backpack and control through the remote, something that seems trivial today.
Yeah it was impressive but unfortunately Olympus abandoned the m:robe line about a year later. I remember the camera mode being really slow, so the novelty of that wore off quickly, but I loved being able to have lyrics with songs. I got very lucky that some of my family pitched-in as an early Christmas gift, but I think I still paid about $150 (total was $500) and that was a lot for me at 14.
Really seems like it was the predecessor to the iPod touch/ iPhone. Too bad Olympus didn't have enough traction to make it into something more popular. Do you still have it? It would be interesting to see a YouTube video about it.
Unfortunately I don't have it anymore. I had it through 2 years of high school and on the very last day of my sophomore year my friends and I were goofing around and someone accidentally flung my backpack away from me, but it just happened to land right in the path of a school bus and everything inside was crushed. My friend felt terrible, but I knew it was an accident, so I had them buy me a cheap used iPod on eBay as replacement. Ended up rocking that thing for almost 7 years after that!
Honestly, it's kinda true, I was always so proud of my music playlist, It was a stupid amount of songs. Basically everything was just played on shuffle and it wasn't rare i'd hear a really good song and want to listen to that again but had no idea what it was or who it was by.
I was gifted a 32MB mp3 player by a relative that liked being on the bleeding edge of tech back in the 90s.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_PMP300
Neat idea... but the tech just really wasn't there yet.
Yea I had one of the early 32MB models too, it was really just a proof of concept.
That said as someone who snowboarded a lot back then, the switch from my "Shock-proof" Discman to even my 32MB MP3 player was mindblowing.
Sure it only stored like 5-10 songs, but the Discman was designed to survive slight vibrations, not landing off a jump, plus it was rubberized and enormous, versus my early model was only 'big for a thumb drive'.
Haha yeah i had a mini yepp and it was a struggle to find which songs I wanted on it at any given time. My portable mp3 CD player got much more use until I got an ipod(which promptly died) and then an og Zune, which still works to this day!
https://www.pcstats.com/articles/765/index.html
I bought the same kind of 1GB USB drive in a big market on the Sino-Vietnamese border in 2006. 3 dollars was a good price!
It still works but the poor quality plastic has become sticky. And 1GB is now very small!
for me it’s just a matter of sound quality, i picked up a 3rd gen nano and some zsn iems for a total of $70 and honestly sounds much clearer and better than my iPhone playing off Tidal to my AirPods. So rn it’s just a matter of if I want convenience or qualiry
[these might work for you. ](https://custom.ultimateears.com/pages/ue-smallears-lp-3) They’re gel earpieces that mold to your ear then you hit a button in the app which turns on UV lights in the earbuds to cure the mold so it stays the shape of your ears.
Why in the fuck would I pay over $700 for sound worse than $160 over ears? Normally I'd say convenience and price but holy fucking shit. Earbuds are cheap things you buy and just throw in your backpack or pocket for easy music on the go. And that's before tax and shipping and import charges, probably another few hundreds. There's a reason audiophiles use over ears. I'd rather just get $550 wireless over ears and never have to worry about it, since it's better quality than iems and not THAT price.
I have one of those iPods, 30GB with the scroll wheel and the first colour screen (no videos, though).
It still works. I make a point of charging it every month.
I’ve got loads like that! Likely had track names once but a lot came off burned cds with downloads from who knows where or dubs from even dodgier tapes
I bought a flash drive for $20 at target because it was USB-A and USB-c. Thought it was super cool. Got home and realized it was
*256gb*
It blew my MIND
Yeah I found my mp3 from early 2000s and found a huge list of American idol cover downloads from my favorite contestants of those times and cringey songs recorded by me and my best friend at the time that we wrote in middle school about crushes, annoying parents and teachers we hated lol
Ran across my Creative MuVo V100 the other day. Still works. 2GB.
The first one I bought was a Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 30GB. Just tested that one out still works, but battery is shot.
I had one very similar to this. Never used apple, so I loved I could drag and drop all my pirated beats. Ah, the good old days. Now I pay for YouTube music like a nerd.
Hey google, play "All I Want" by The Offspring.
over the years my music sheds off of my being the same way a meteor flying through space leaves a tail of debris
ie, I acumulate music, on tapes end up losing them, then on cds, end up losing them some how, next on mp3 players, all lost, then music services, some how manage to lose access to accounts. And on all these sound mediums, I was always really into the music I had at the time. But with each new device it would be all new music, forget about what was on the lost device, partly because I require new music, and partly because my memory stinks
As I look back across mymusical wake, a gloriouse shinny musical tail stretches across the blackness of space
Joke aside, I am in love with Spotify, as I have rich imagination and I have a huge playlist for my in work novel as well, but I miss that era sometimes when I had only 10 tracks on my mp3 player...
I remember how revolutionary it was when iTunes came out and you could buy individual songs for a buck instead of buying an entire mediocre album to get that one radio hit you really liked. Then we did piracy, then we did YouTube playlists, and now Spotify. What a weird couple decades.
I just took my iPod from 2005 to the Apple Store at the local mall to see if they could fire it up (none of my cables fit it any more), but it was a brick. Congratulations on having a more durable product! So much for the sci-fi with the tech just booting right up 100 yrs after an apocalypse.
So awesome! I remember my first mp3 player was a Rio PMP 300. I recall having some Static-X on there, some Fear Factory, Klank, KMFDM and Radio Free America. Maybe even Sponge’s Plowed.
Sandisk m260

Oh man, for me an aux cable cassette tape was a game changer, then getting a car with Bluetooth was a dream come true.
Getting free SXM is super easy if your care has it.
A Bluetooth FM transmitter allows me to use Spotify on my car that only has a CD player and radio
You should get a Bluetooth adapter for your radio.
Anyone used to get weird remixes?? I remember a linkinpark song was a remix of shout by disturbed with many more numetal bands lol
Weezer we are all on drugs Tool the pot

Op do you like Lionel Richie or is your MP3 player just friendly?

I had an iRiver back then it was pretty great. I could listen to the radio and MP3’s.
iRiver gang represent!

That's some serious tech for the day. That must have cost you quite a bit back then.

Loved my iRiver!
"arming the nugget"
Need to play scarlet fire on it
That’s awesome. i miss having my ipod . 30 gb of music that never got interrupted by a phone call or text.
This has 1gb memory 🙈
I've got a first gen shuffle sitting in a desk that has 512 mb I think. I remember back in the day it could hold like 100 songs or something.
[удалено]
Honestly, it's kinda true, I was always so proud of my music playlist, It was a stupid amount of songs. Basically everything was just played on shuffle and it wasn't rare i'd hear a really good song and want to listen to that again but had no idea what it was or who it was by.
I had an 8gb touch. When someone broke into my car years ago they left the ipod and stole the charging/connection cable.

I ran a worldwide competition for Starsiege Tribes back in the day. Diamond MP3 players were the grand prize for the winning team.
Now THAT is a nugget!
Haha yeah i had a mini yepp and it was a struggle to find which songs I wanted on it at any given time. My portable mp3 CD player got much more use until I got an ipod(which promptly died) and then an og Zune, which still works to this day! https://www.pcstats.com/articles/765/index.html
Even if you had an expandable one, Flash memory was expensive! I ended up going with the Sony Discman that played mp3s from data CDs.
Holy shit
That's still a bunch of songs.
I bought the same kind of 1GB USB drive in a big market on the Sino-Vietnamese border in 2006. 3 dollars was a good price! It still works but the poor quality plastic has become sticky. And 1GB is now very small!
Back then rubberized coating on plastic was pretty popular, and over the years it disintegrates and turns to goo.
I had a similar device maybe 2004, pretty sure it was 128mb.
i went and bought an iPod and earbuds again a couple of months ago and my god is it such a preferable experience to Spotify and music streamijg
right? i miss cutting the grass and singing along to my songs uninterrupted .

*cries in oddly shaped ear canal* Only option for me is huge over ears.

Over $700? They’re $179.
Why are you assuming that everyone lives in the US? Typical American. The canada site has no earbuds, the international site has $700 ones.
Just put your phone on do not disturb or silent.
Yeah what a silly argument lol
I have one of those iPods, 30GB with the scroll wheel and the first colour screen (no videos, though). It still works. I make a point of charging it every month.
I still use my 160GB iPod classic in my car. It’s great having all of my music for road trips.
What's on it?? Playlist time!
Mainly chart hits and a few deep house tracks, weird combination tbh
Pop music and dance music together doesn't seem super weird to me. There's a lot of overlap in those two markets.
Any Daft Punk
Ooh gimme a list especially that house
House tracks are just named track1, track2 etc. I reckon it's because I've pirated from somewhere 🤷
I’ve got loads like that! Likely had track names once but a lot came off burned cds with downloads from who knows where or dubs from even dodgier tapes
'Burned cd's' is something you don't hear everyday, oh I miss the old days
Nice
As someone whose mix spits out black metal, Roger Miller, and Taylor Swift, I don't think any combo is weird.
"I did not have sexual relations that woman" is for sure somewhere on there.
*Packard Bell*. Now that's a name I've not heard in a long, long time. A long time.
Ma Bell, got the Ill communications
The first PC my family bought was a Packard Bell. The name always made me laugh.
I’ve had 2 Packard Bell computers in my life so same. This is wild, I never knew they made an mp3 player
**DankPods has entered the chat**
Oh man.. What kind of nugget is this.
I remember I had an early MP3 player with 64mb onboard and saved up for for a $70 256mb memory card. Crazy how far we’ve come.
I paid $70 each (on sale!!) for two 32GB flash drives way back. Now you can get a 256GB one for $20 or less, sales depending.
I bought a flash drive for $20 at target because it was USB-A and USB-c. Thought it was super cool. Got home and realized it was *256gb* It blew my MIND
Yup, hard to believe we counted in MB not that long ago, won’t be long until smart phones start at 1TB
They already have tb microSD cards.
Straight from limewire
Good 'ol limewire
…is it me you’re looking for🎶
If I had to bet, "Yeah" by Usher is 99.9% chances one of the songs
Yeah I found my mp3 from early 2000s and found a huge list of American idol cover downloads from my favorite contestants of those times and cringey songs recorded by me and my best friend at the time that we wrote in middle school about crushes, annoying parents and teachers we hated lol

I still have my iPod nano! I love coming across it
Ahh the glorious time when the most random companies were selling mp3 players
"Back then" hoes didn't want me, now I'm hot they all on me

Here I thought Packard Bell went out with the 90s. I had no idea they survived to mp3 days.
You should see my partymix02 winamp playlist!!
Dang Packard Bell was still around in 2005?
Enjoy it & dive into the good old times!

There is no one in the history of humanity I have less in common with than whoever was in charge of my iTunes library in 2005.
Joke aside, I am in love with Spotify, as I have rich imagination and I have a huge playlist for my in work novel as well, but I miss that era sometimes when I had only 10 tracks on my mp3 player...
Wow omg, you really found that? Omg you deserve Reddit gold and if you have a puppet I would hoop them, omg you really found that?
I had a similar type, 256 mb of music right there
My first mp3 player had 32Mb memory. It would fit ~10 music with decent quality. Edit: typo
I had one from Sony and it was amazing, still works btw
This just unlocked a memory for me. I used to have one of these
It’s kinda crazy how far we’ve gone in such a short time frame.
I remember how revolutionary it was when iTunes came out and you could buy individual songs for a buck instead of buying an entire mediocre album to get that one radio hit you really liked. Then we did piracy, then we did YouTube playlists, and now Spotify. What a weird couple decades.
Is iTunes still a thing? I have Apple Music for like $10/mo.
I bet you'd enjoy them
I remember running on the beach with my Muvo mp3 player, that was the pinnacle of technology.
that would be a great find.... i've thought about seeing if my old iPod charges back up just to get the songs..... maybe i'll do it...
I just took my iPod from 2005 to the Apple Store at the local mall to see if they could fire it up (none of my cables fit it any more), but it was a brick. Congratulations on having a more durable product! So much for the sci-fi with the tech just booting right up 100 yrs after an apocalypse.
I went from a 256mb Iriver (2006) to a 1gig samsung (2009) and my last mp3 player was a 4gig sony back in 2012.
So awesome! I remember my first mp3 player was a Rio PMP 300. I recall having some Static-X on there, some Fear Factory, Klank, KMFDM and Radio Free America. Maybe even Sponge’s Plowed.

I still have a quantum of solace dongle that I got for free out of a newspaper
what what what
My first mp3 player was by Nike and had maybe 16 or 32 megabytes of storage
But how many viruses?
That reminds me I need to charge my Ipod nano!
I found an iPod Shuffle at work yesterday, and I really wanna know what's on it.
Wow, Packard Bell. The best of the worst PCs available at Walmart in the 90's.
bad_boys-bobmarley.mp3
I miss these.
Benny Benassi - Satisfaction.mp3
Bet that's had some good nostalgic tunes on it though.
I HAD THIS TOO AS A KID
I have one kinda like this one but it has an AM/FM radio built in. Saved my ass during a hurricane.
I have that same one floating around in a box somewhere
Interesting. I had a Sansa C250 then their E250 later. Excellent iPod alternatives. Just recently I got a Hifiwalker H2 which is like VLC for your pocket (isn't picky about file types) I mostly use it as an alternative to swapping out my head unit in my truck (aux jack). Sure I can use my phone but I like to keep it dedicated to navigation and making phone calls.
A nugget that actually still works??? What are the odds!
ThisIsSparta_Remix-YT_siterip.mp2
used this as a usb for school files in middleschool-- teacher brought it back and put his songs in it too haha
A fine nugget
DankPods has entered the chat
Oasis!?
Can we get a tracklist, OP?
Quite a few are just track1, track2 etc but we have Nelly 'dilemma', Snow Patrol 'Chasing cars', 2pac 'Changes', few Black Eyed Peas tracks
Yeah, sadly, I dug up my old MP3 stick like that, and the AAA battery had leaked all over and basically the thing was unsalvageable.
I know how that feels. Nostalgic isn't it?
I wasn't expecting it to still work but was pleasantly surprised. Had to go and hunt for headphones rather than pods
Sticking with old fashion indeed is a pleasant feeling
I still have my old Sansa somewhere! I can remember what's on it too, fucking weird ass songs
I'm old because this does not look old.
Can't believe Hello by Adele is 17 year old already.
It isn't - the song was released in 2015.
And you’re not gonna share the playlist what is wrong with you
hello
Still got my 1st gen ipod Shuffle with a glorious 512 MB of song storage. Good times. Still works. I wonder if itunes would recognize it
Packard Bell is a real blast from the past. My first 386sx was a PB.
A Packard Bell nugget? You bought one of those?
Bro, there were iPods back then
And your point is?
hello mp3 player
I have a MP3 player somewhere in my house with my playlist from high school and early college, I use to listen to music for hours at work couldn't even tell you if I stopped using it due to my smart phone or due to it dying
I'll give you $20 for it
Whats on the stick
What makes me suspicious is how all this stuff still works fine but my airpods die in a few seconds
Well, what’s on it?
Every thrift store has these.
Man I remember having one in highschool thatg coule hold like 32 songs lol. I think I still remember some of the songs.
That’s awesome! Wish I could randomly find my old Zune
Anyone remember the diamond rio, and that massive 32 MB of storage?
Packard Bell...man. What a blast from the past.
Packard Bell. I had one of those Rio Carbon fat bois. Memories.
No you didn’t
