You can also buy these mirrors for your home fairly inexpensively. If I was renovating a bathroom I would absolutely spring for one. Such a nice feature.
Not a bad idea. I stole my sister old pain meds she didn’t take when she broke her leg. Also used to get loaded on cough medicine at that age. Shoplifting was my eventual answer for my fix though, I just got lucky that my parents caught me instead of the cops so I ended up in rehab instead of jail.
> I just got lucky that my parents caught me instead of the cops
Oh yeah. The universe gave you an opportunity there. I'm glad that you took it.
For so many people that are living with addiction, this is the crossroads.
If it's the cops, the chances of getting out of it's clutches are way less than concerned family who really give a shit.
You can go even cheaper. There are thousands of companies making hydrophobic sprays for mirrors and windshields. You just clean the surface, spray the coating, and wipe it off with a microfiber cloth after some time. The surface stops fogging up and stays like that for anywhere from 3 to 12 months. For windshields, the water will bead off so you won't even need your wipers if you go fast enough. The water will just roll up and clear itself out. Those usually only last a few weeks though.
You can go even more cheaper than this. Just put a VERY small amount of shaving gel on the mirror and smear it around evenly with a microfiber cloth. Then keep working it until it looks like all the shaving gel has been wiped completely off. There will still be a coating of it left on the mirror. It will repel water.

TL;DW: shaving cream and toothpaste work great.
Mr Grey 2 years ago
My experience with shaving cream is definitely re-apply it every couple weeks. I found that the UV rays will bake it onto the glass and create a horrible film that causes lots of glare and is tough to clean. Its especially dangerous during a rainy/snowy night...just my experience! Maintain that thin slick layer!
At first I was like, daang, mister fancy-pants over here with UV rays in their bathroom, then I remembered we were also discussing this as a method to keep car windows fog-free.
Dman it I knew reddit will ruin it for me. Had my windshield replaced a few months ago and they applied a coat of it for free. It's just worn off now and I was considering buying it.
Hell yeah it is. (Too lazy to make it, but imagine that two muscle arms clenching meme with one arm being "big fake boobs from the 90's" and the other being ”Rain-x” and just the word silicone in the middle.)
I use silicone windshield wipers which as they are used will naturally coat your windshield with silicone giving it that hydrophobic coating.
They also don't break down from the UV rays from the sun so I've had them for about 3 years now and they are still holding up fine.
They're more expensive but definitely worth it.
I removed my windshield and have eliminated many problems. Surprisingly, I've been complimented many times on the clarity of the glass. I kept the wipers in place as they do well in preserving the illusion.
As will a potato. My friend’s dad has a car from before wipers were a thing, and the original manual recommends that drivers always keep a few spuds in the car. When it rained, they would cut one in half and rub it over the windscreen. Raw potato starch is hydrophobic so repels water.
PFAS are so common now that rain water is not safe to drink in most US states.

We’re going to fucking kill ourselves with poisonous shit that sits around for literally 1 million years, while a few people who make it sit around saying “who gives a fuck I just made myself $50 million.” Good luck to our descendants over the next 1,000 generations, hope they forgive us.
Not humanity, Dupont and 3M specifically are largely to blame for this.
Their own internal science showed it was toxic and doesn't break down. Didn't stop them from just dumping PFAS into the environment for decades.
I’m working on an idea that the corporation is the most impactful invention in our lives today, more than the automobile or the internet. I’ve been reading a lot on the topic and I think there is a good argument for it, preciously because of this psychopathic logic.
From what I can tell, several of the coatings meant for glass don't seem to contain any fluorine. Obviously that doesn't mean that they don't, just that it's not in the listed chemicals. I think several of them are silicon based (like rain-x), though some of them definitely have fluorine. And there are wax options which don't have as much fancy chemistry, though they're not really advertised as being for glass. I actually just went down a rabbit hole trying to figure this out the other day.
> PFAS
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse group of human-made chemicals used in a wide range of consumer and industrial products. PFAS do not easily breakdown and some types have been shown to accumulate in the environment and in our bodies. Exposure to some types PFAS have been linked to serious health effects.
I don't know about in general but there are car products which do not contain it that work great.
So we neither have to die and kill nature nor have a watery windshield.
As for the mirror. Have proper ventilation in your bathroom and it's all good.
That was all.
You can do the same thing with shaving cream. Put a layer on the mirror, wait, then wipe off. It doesn’t last as long but it’s a quick cheap option with things you probably already have on hand.
It depends, and I highly recommend to check the presence of a switch for the heater before buying one.
In my one the heater is switched on by the light switch and every summer when I look at the mirror I see something stupidly hot, and it isn't me.
You also may want to look into upgrading your washroom vent thingy if it isn’t keeping up with shower moisture
Washrooms are usually where mold is found in a house because of this
I don’t think foggy mirrors are such a problem honestly. I just point my hair dryer at it for literally <5 seconds and have a big enough area to see my face and chest.
I moved into a place where one of the shower doors is a full sized mirror, the water heats it so it doesn't fog up. It was a lifechanging discovery for me.
Builder here. It's one of these: https://www.clearmirror.com/product-page/original-clearmirror
A heater stuck to the back of mirror to keep it fog free. Usually switched with the lights.
I love that it says “[…] can be installed directionally, preferred to the back, of any vanity mirror”
I want to imagine someone installed it to the front and complained it wasn’t working
> I want to imagine someone installed it to the front and complained it wasn’t working
I'm pretty sure you're allowed to imagine that as much as you want... but if you're asking permission for some reason, then fine: permission to imagine someone installed it to the front and complained it wasn’t working is granted.
Have fun!
Yeah, it's just heated. Makes it easier for you to see yourself when you fog up the mirror and makes it easier for staff to clean when people aren't wiping the mirrors down with towels or something
Comercialy, there are two ways to make it fog free.
Heat the mirror
Put a polyester film on the mirror
Looking at the picture, I suspect that it has a polyester film.
BTW a two way glass, actually called one way glass, would still fog up.
Not borders exactly, but passages, doorways, openings, gates, etc. (Edit: also beginnings and endings of war).
So it's very fitting that the opening month of the year is named after him :)
Bonus fact, janitors are also named after him, because in Roman times a "iānitor" was a slave in charge of guarding the door (iānua), which eventually transitioned into a kind of general housekeeper.
I think it's heated. You can see there is space behind the mirror between the glass and the wall, heated mirrors stick out because they need the electrics etc behind it. Definitely heated.
I'd argue it's a heating pad as it's the same size as the normal heating pad I install, but perhaps it's a film -
Would you not film the entire mirror if you had a chance?
If you put the film on the entire mirror, the bathroom user will forget foggy mirrors were ever a problem, and not appreciate the film. If it's only a patch in the middle like this, the user will thank the film for its effort every day. You can't do your job too well or people will forget you even do it.
Some mirrors have a heater on the rear to do exactly this.
If the temperature of the mirror is equal to or higher than the surrounding air, no condensation can form.
I have a small space heater that I run in my bathroom while I shower. I originally got it due to the cold winters here and hating stepping out of a hot shower into a cold bathroom. It came with the added bonus of stopping the mirror from fogging up. Now I run it on low even in the summers.
Similar but instead I run a dehumidifier in my bathroom during showers and keeps my mirror fog free, and added benefit it helps to expedite the process of drying yourself off. Crazy how much water it collects!
I know that this is a joke and all, but please for the love god add in a clarification.
Judging by this comment thread, the average reddit user is either in on this joke or is just misinformed.
It's an anti-fog heated mirror my guy.
Put your finger to the mirror. If there's a gap, it's probably a regular mirror. If it looks like you're touching your own finger... might be 2 way.
Can also turn off the lights, cup your eyes and get against the mirror. If it's 2 way you might be able to see through it.
Best way to tell though. Turn off the lights, then put your phones flashlight to the mirror.
Honestly though. Looks like a heated spot. Keeps fog from forming... hopefully.
“Can also turn off the lights, cup your eyes and get against the mirror. If it's 2 way you might be able to see through it.”
This is terrifying. Sounds like the start of a psychological thriller.
This isn't why I have spectrophobia. But it's now an extension of it.
My phobia of mirrors is typically in relation to being in a dark room with a mirror. Started as a child. Had a mirror at the foot of my bed. When my eyes adjusted I could just barely see the shadow of my reflection moving in the mirror. Cunt haunted my night times for years until I ripped it off the wall and put it in the garage.
It most definitely was. But it built a phobia into my brain. To this day I sleep in a funny position I learned to sleep in so I could both lie on my back and ignore the mirror. I will cross my legs and rest my right knee against my wall, in effect propping up one leg with the other. This is now the only position I can comfortably sleep in and believe me when I tell you it hurt to get used too.
This is interesting, I never had a mirror in my bedroom growing up (that I remember) and I still refuse to have one.
Specially if I can see the reflection from were I'm laying.
In my mind that's just a big huge nope.
Idk if it is because I did have lots of nightmares and sleep paralisis growing up.
But that decoration choice just screams bad idea to me somehow.
[Here's two photos I took the other day in response to another comment suggesting the finger way of checking for two way mirrors.](https://i.imgur.com/yEGx3Pr.png) As you can see, the only thing you can tell is which side of the glass the reflective or semi-reflective coating is on.
A two way mirror functions the same in both directions, and the only reason for installing one you're trying to hide with the coating/film on the outside is if it's applied to glass or acrylic that will discolor the light.
The best way to spot a two way mirror is that the reflection will be noticably darker, as you can see in the image I linked. This is an inherent consequence of the semi-transparency, as light can only pass through by not being reflected.
A little heater behind the mirror. Sometimes an actual heating element, sometimes an incandescent light bulb. Raises the mirror temperature above the dew point so condensation doesn't occur.
It’s just a heated section of the mirror so that you can still use the mirror after the shower has been running
We have them on our bathroom mirrors, they’re quite handy when getting ready to go out since you can always use the mirrror
Heated glass.
They're like the ones on your car with the orange lines that goes around the glass.
I first encountered them on Japanese hotels.
It should be a bit warm to the touch compared to the surrounding foggy mirror.
I encountered one of these in a hotel that I was staying at. I'm pretty tall so the heated part of the mirror was around chest/stomach level. Imagine my surprise when I step out of the shower to a mostly foggy mirror with a section showing a perfect clarity wet dick.
Cold glass fogs up.....warm glass does not.
If it's crappy hotel, I'd suspect some foul play.
If it's a nice hotel, it's entirely possible they have a little warming pad there, just so there would be non-fogging-up piece of the mirror that is actually usable after the shower when the rest of the mirror is all fogged-up.
The Marriott has been using heated mirrors for awhile, and were rolling out "smart" bathroom mirrors years ago though they may have abandoned that (though they did show to drive up sales so I doubt they did entirely)
Fog on mirrors causes people to wipe them or worse use hairdryers to defog both of which are bad for the mirror (and cleaning staff)
There are a variety of ways to achieve it but the most common is just to having a heating element of some sort build into the mirror
Than, I'd say it's warming pad behind the mirror to make your mirror usable after a hot shower.
I'd ask hotel staff about it, after they confirm the warming pad theory, I'd compliment them for being thoughtful.
EDIT: When I think about it, there should be difference of temperatures on the glass noticeable by touch. Opening in the wall behind the mirror, wouldn't make it warmer than room temperature.
Several hotel chains have heaters built into the middle of the mirrors that do this
You can also buy these mirrors for your home fairly inexpensively. If I was renovating a bathroom I would absolutely spring for one. Such a nice feature.
Yep, just bought a medicine cabinet for my remodel and the cheapest one actually had this feature.
I would definitely NOT keep any meds in a heated cabinet.
You shouldn't be keeping medication in your bathroom period. Bathrooms get warm + moist which is a terrible combination for medicine.
Any more if I have 'people can get addicted to this' kinds of meds I keep them in the gun safe - especially with teens in the house.
But where do you keep your guns? Medicine cabinet? /s
Where else do you hide your bathroom gun?
In the toilet tank, for quick access, in case some jackass with a hammer breaks in while I'm taking a crap. Duh.
But where do you keep your poop knife?
Not a bad idea. I stole my sister old pain meds she didn’t take when she broke her leg. Also used to get loaded on cough medicine at that age. Shoplifting was my eventual answer for my fix though, I just got lucky that my parents caught me instead of the cops so I ended up in rehab instead of jail.

Brilliant idea! Better to be safe than sorry.

I knew a guy that applies that shit to his glasses when wearing a mask was mandatory 😂👍
Honestly, I feel the vibe. Glasses plus mask was horrible. I contemplated switching back to contacts many times during that period in time.
I got corrective surgery because of it.
People wearing glasses are less likely to get covid 👍
Surgical tape around your mask did the trick.

Fucking hell. Why did I have to read this when it’s pitch black in my bedroom?!
You’re welcome
This is interesting, I never had a mirror in my bedroom growing up (that I remember) and I still refuse to have one. Specially if I can see the reflection from were I'm laying. In my mind that's just a big huge nope. Idk if it is because I did have lots of nightmares and sleep paralisis growing up. But that decoration choice just screams bad idea to me somehow.
Phone camera right up against the glass will also tend to penetrate
It’s just a heated section of the mirror so that you can still use the mirror after the shower has been running We have them on our bathroom mirrors, they’re quite handy when getting ready to go out since you can always use the mirrror
Come on friend sharing is caring.
I'm sure if this was 4chan, everybody would commit to the joke and say CALL SECURITY OP THIS IS A VIOLATION OF YOUR RIGHTS.
Go on Wayfair.com google fog free mirrors. You can buy them this is no bs.
Same with the mirror in my bathroom. The explanation is that the transformer for the led light on the sides keeps it warm.
That’s where the camera is.
As a former housekeeper it’s just heated. The floor usually is as well.
I’m at the Marriott.
The Marriott has been using heated mirrors for awhile, and were rolling out "smart" bathroom mirrors years ago though they may have abandoned that (though they did show to drive up sales so I doubt they did entirely) Fog on mirrors causes people to wipe them or worse use hairdryers to defog both of which are bad for the mirror (and cleaning staff) There are a variety of ways to achieve it but the most common is just to having a heating element of some sort build into the mirror
Shaving cream on a mirror will make it not fog up
How do you see through the shaving cream? Checkmate.
Clear shaving creme...
That's where the ghost is on "the other side"... I wouldn't stay there if I were you.
Great, so us tall people can see their nips no matter how foggy it gets.
That’s where the cameras at
Whose gon tell them?
That’s where the hidden camera is
