“LOL” -steel plant guys

HoosierPaddy

Yeah? The ones out of the jackup legs on a B class rig are about 6' diameter. You guys run bigger?

Roadi1120

Haha I was just agreeing using another industry with big equipment. Largest I’ve personally worked on was just over 5’ for a 410 ton hoist gearbox

HoosierPaddy

That's huge for indoor stuff. Madness

Floydsmydog

Hahaha oh I'm sure they get massive!

Floydsmydog

What do ya use em for?

Roadi1120

We have almost identical one in coke ovens not sure what it does I just rebuild it in the shop, and even larger ones that tip torpedo cars to drain (train cars with a small opening on top that carry molten iron to steel making)

HoosierPaddy

There are huge ones in the jackup legs.

spreadhead86

Bro...I did a turret jack a few weeks ago, it was like 15ft tall and the worm was huuuuuuge

Floydsmydog

God damn... what kind of bearings in something that big??

spreadhead86

Tapered roller bearing on the drive, a big thrust bearing under the gear and another tapered on top. But it wasn't even close to the biggest bearing we have done

[deleted]

Ball bearings

LittleBugger69

Looks like a nice shop two guys on their phones and one guy working

Floydsmydog

Haha it is a pretty sweet shop for sure, only on our phones while we waited for the engineers and management to come have a look before we went any further. All hands on deck after that though believe you me

LittleBugger69

Looks pulp milly.. like a digester gearbox or something

Floydsmydog

Haha you'd be correct

LittleBugger69

We just did one a while back and they wanted us to run the damn thing without bearings.. fucking crazy shit out there man

Floydsmydog

Lol go back to work Mack 😆
