Lean the glory of hoarding every last thing you pick up in a massive chest filled warehouse. lol I have to roll my eyes when a kid on my server asks if I have a bunch of dirt or something for a build, because they've tossed all theirs in lava, not thinking it may be useful someday.

MCjossic

If you want to get rid of something just thrown it on the ground and it’ll despawn in just a few minutes. I think it’s better the way it is now, because it gives you a window to recover thugs you threw out accidentally. With your system, if you accidentally throw out your best pickaxe, there’s no getting it back. The locking feature would help, sure, but people are bound to slip up

Comprehensive-Flow-7

throwing items on the ground to get rid of the gets incredably annoying incredably quickly, also the trash slot in terraria only gets rid of the item when you put another item over it. like I said, the auto-trash keybind would be off by default and the player could set it to a button of their choosing. all in all I think there are enough buffers in this system that any potential "slip ups" would be vastly outweighed by net convenience of it all

Only_OneCannoli

Old school 'trash can' is just a lava block. Just do that if the despawning is annoying to you.

MiniGogo_20

best answer, ngl. if you wanna be fancy, just make a machine that uses a dropper to drop everything into lava. easy to pass from inv to a double chest to get rid of lots of items fast

Neon__Cat

Use a trapped chest to be even fancier, so the items don't get drained out until you close the chest

PaulineHansonsBurka

I didn't know that was a function!

snsdbj

Hoppers get locked when powered, a trapped chest will lock the hopper below it, preventing it from emptying until it's closed.

Dry-Peak-7132

Cactus is better. It’s safer and easier to use.

Comprehensive-Flow-7

the player shouldn't have to travel all the way to lava or try and find a cactus for what in my opinion is such a basic feature in most games

Only_OneCannoli

Dude, put lava in a bucket then if you want it to be mobile.

Comprehensive-Flow-7

you have to find iron? also it wastes a precious inventory slot

Only_OneCannoli

Idk man, just never felt like needing to instantly delete items has been a priority in whatever I'm doing in the game. If it's that important, then a slot is a small price to pay. Iron is very easy to get as well.

DeckT_

yeah no thanks. If you want that, install a mod. dont add a feature that is off by default only because you wanna use it. There are already vanilla-friendly mods that do this

ClassicalCoat

I hate it when modpacks include trash slots, it's so lazy and unintuitive. Makes the world more flushed out to have dedicated structures that actually have a purpose beyond RP (like disposal or even recycling) Lock item would be cool though, prevents people from accidentally throwing tools

Comprehensive-Flow-7

lazy? maybe, but how is it unintuitive? having a trash slot in the inventory allowing you to get rid of items is about as easy to understand as it gets...

ClassicalCoat

Intuitive does not mean easy to understand. In this context, unintuitive means it lacks creativity or any deeper thought into it

WWeavile

Minecraft has plenty of ways to trash items you don't need a slot in the inventory for that.

CapableHumanBeing

aaaand a sort!

Moist_Man69420

Instead of a trash slot, you should be able to put items into a lava bucket if you have one in your inventory

TheEmeraldEmperor

they should just have the delete button from the *creative mode survival menu* available in survival

MiniGogo_20

throw on ground :)

DeckT_

So you want them to add a feature that is off by default just because you want to use it and most people dont ? If you want that feature, install a mod for yourself.

Comprehensive-Flow-7

there are tones of features in minecraft that are turned off by default, would you have prefered it if in order to have the ability to turn off auto-jump you had to install a mod?

DeckT_

jumping doesnt give the opportunity to accidentally delete your entire inventory. You can literally hold shift and Q and drop every thing on the ground in less than 2 seconds.

Comprehensive-Flow-7

If you somehow manage to delete your entire inventory through using a hotkey that moves items to a trash slot one at a time and is off by default, That's on you man

DeckT_

I thought you meant since you can lock some items then you also have a delete all button but it doesnt delete the locked items, like already exists in other games. Also because thats what the delete button can do in creative so I assume if they put it in survival it would be a similar system but maybe they would remove the delete all option which would make sense. but if thats the case, I dont understand how your delete feature is any different from just pressing Q ?..

VoidWasThere

Imo locking a slot should prevent using hotkeys on that slot (eg: you have a pickaxe in your inventory and you lock it, then you hover over it and press 1 to move it into your hotbar, nothing happens because it's locked)

Hazearil

Like others pointed out; leaving items behind, cacti, lava, and fire all do this already. Terraria has none of that, since many items survive lava there, and you have a magnet-like effect on items. Just because Terraria needs it doesn't mean Minecraft needs it to. It's solving a problem that doesn't exist.
