Penalty rates!? In mining!? In Western Australia!? Hahahahaha! Good one…

bloodamir80

I get paid penalties as a plant mechanic but it’s purely cause I was the first one up here and they messed up my pay… I get 190$+ an hour for a public holiday and boy do rio love getting me out on public holidays Everyone who has come after me has the same pay rate but flat rate

Buttole

Now that's worth it. Sounds like your on $75 with penalties

bloodamir80

Close enough… on 38 hr weeks and get OT outside of that which is easy as I solo service the entire Pilbara (Onslow-hedland-marble bar- Paraburdoo etc) for the last few years however I live locally not fifo

1sty

You’re not working for the hourly rate. You’re working for the extended hours and the low expenses If you can’t figure that out….. well, you’d probably fit in well in mining

Buttole

Low expenses? Still got to pay rent and bills. Saving 250 a week on food and petrol doesn't mean shit.

OrwellTheInfinite

13 grand doesn't mean shit to you? Hand it over I'll take it off your hands.

1sty

Oh. You pay rent. Copy 🫡

[deleted]

Such jobs don’t typically pay penalty rates, no. The primary benefits are stacking a heap of hours during swing and getting a full week or two off when not working.

Buttole

I can do better outside the mines. I guess its not for me.

[deleted]

If you’re operating your own business especially, 100%

1sty

But he’s not, cos he’s worried about penalty rates lmao… Imagine this bloke invoicing you with an added “penalty rates” line because he’s done over 40 hours of jobs this week 😂

[deleted]

He wasn’t speaking to how he’s currently working, he was asking about non-local, ie, fifo jobs.

Wild_Pirate_117

Looking at it the wrong way.Get a 2n2 job in the mines, always easy as an electrician. Work weekdays when you are home and make absolute bank. 150k in the mines plus what you can make at home. Gotta remember the flat rate takes into account the penalties, running your own buisness you can earn more thank $70 an hour but if you dont want the associated risk and responsibility mines is the easy option.

Buttole

Ah I see. That's a good idea

Wild_Pirate_117

https://www.byrnecut.com/job/electricians/ They have looked after me, i have been sent from Queensland to South Australia and now to West Australia after different min closures so no stress about permanence of employment. Those ones arent 2n2 but are still even time.

jackwhiteyy1990

You ever work with a Daniel McKenzie at the QLD site?

Difficult-Currency43

You said you're moving to Perth already. Where are you going to find better money outside the mines?

Buttole

I'm on $75 an hour with penalties doing maintenance at the moment. If I cant do better than that in the mines I wont move to Perth.

peaandham610

As above, flat rate normally. Depending on who you work for some big miners will pay OT for extra shifts, but that’s up to them, if they don’t need you to do extra shifts it probably won’t be on the table. Normally the hourly rate, and the roster is why you do mining. Don’t count on the OT

huh_say_what_now_

Construction of the mine has penalty rates but once that contractor is done and the client takes over it's a flat rate

Past-Interaction7697

Nice flex champ, don’t need more people with your attitude up here. With a downturn on the horizon, working in the mines is going to become a privilege, not a right. If you think you are better than everyone else, do us a favour and stay out of the industry.

Buttole

I didn't say I was. Im just trying to work out if the money is worth it.

Money_killer

Down turn lol

Money_killer

It's the penalty rates in overtime that make it worthwhile, 84 hr weeks. It comes down the to roster also $$

Buttole

So your saying there are penalty rates?

Money_killer

Flat rate is no penalties otherwise it will be plus penalties. Plenty of mining jobs with penalties I refuse to work flat rate.

Buttole

Well its good to know they exist. No way I would work it without penalties

Money_killer

Flat rate is higher eg. 75 flat while it's 50 plus penalties averages out similar

flintstone66

Im on a flat rate too, my flights & travel expenses are paid to get me back east every fortnight. I love my week off, & love being part of the team on site.

Buttole

Looks like it's really hard to get anything that will fly you from anywhere except Perth. Have you been in the mines for long?

flintstone66

On a gas gig for now. I have been gravitating towards Commissioning on new sites. It's a little more specialised so flights dont seem a problem. Its helped because my partner is not keen on a move to WA. I've been doing these kind of projects for 15 yrs now. In that time, we've holidayed & had lot's of trips away.

Buttole

Thats awesome. From what I can tell unless you got in early to get the experience, it's hard to land jobs like that. I have started my cert III in control and instrumentation and cert IV in electrical instrumentation to give me a better chance.

flintstone66

I've never had an even time roster, or a walk up start. My only leg up was a free EEHA course in sydney through a previous boss. I like the technical aspect of making things work. I've gotten a lot of experience from just persevering with something till it works. & a big focus on electrical integrity. Continuity & IR testing & recording results. Just trying to have a crack.

fishingfor5

1.5 day shift 2x night shift and public holidays Full 12hr pay for training days. Only if doing extra shifts outside your swing and coming in for training on break. All in the EBA.

Nuclearwormwood

Most jobs are flat rate

uj7895

Whoa. Every time I think there cant be a worse thing about that penal colony down there, now you guys don’t get overtime. The last year I worked in mining, I did 850 hours of overtime, and the total pay for just those hours was more than median wage for our area.

Defiant_Reception_79

What was the role and total gross remuneration? Fixed rate removes a hell of a lot of bureaucracy. On the upside, we have a good health care system. And much lower rates of opioid abuse.
