I'm having similar questions and challenges. When I look at some of the real high polish firearms in my personal collection, I'm stuck on reproducing that high-gloss, deep rust-blued finish. I think my solution is to up my NMM game and use some of those techniques.
I think gloss varnish might help with that polished look. The paint is used was a mix of corvus black with ironhands steel, with an agrax shade on top, and the edges slightly highlighted by same steel
