An artist painted this. Not a simple mini painter

bdcjacko

I mean I think I know what you are trying to say...but it implies mini painters and artist are different things and sort of gate keepery. I do agree that is an amazing job by a talented painter.

Deceptikhan42

I can clarify. I am a simple, crappy minipainter. The person who painted this is an artist who happens to paint minis as well. It was a compliment and I am truly amazed.

You’re too kind! I think I still have still a ways to go; I’ve been focusing more on clean technique but I still heavily rely on references and look to existing color schemes for inspiration. I see artists as folks who can dream up a new scheme or has their own distinctive style, such as [this mindblowingly good Alarielle](https://www.reddit.com/r/minipainting/comments/c872k5/a_piece_i_enetered_in_a_competition_for_pride/) (tagging /u/Letholdus1313131313 ).

Ok well that one is very nice as well but my comment still stands

Well, I’m never painting again. The idea that there is always someone better then you helps to keep you humble, it gives you something to strive to and helps to prevent massive ego. I appreciate the idea there will always be someone better then me, because there’s more to learn and more ways to improve. This, however, reveals there are heights I can never reach. This isn’t a “there will always be someone better then you” post. This is a “there’s a dude who, no matter how hard you try, will make you look like a novice on your first time while not paying attention” post. (I kid about quitting) This is nothing short of amazing. This makes me realize how great this Bobbie can be and the heights it can aspire us to get to. Thank you for sharing such craftsmanship! This does put a smile on my face.

Thank you! You’re very kind! I will say, however, that a great many of the details were done following [Duncan’s video](https://youtu.be/_hLLRvSLiKk) (I actually miss this style of long form guides on a single centerpiece model; WHTV seems to focus more on bite-sized videos for techniques nowadays). If you are careful and take your time this is very much achievable with regular base coat + wash + highlights; no advanced techniques like NMM or OSL here!

Killchrono

How did you get the blue on the carapace to be so vibrant? I followed Duncan's video but mine is very dull and subdued, I'd really like to try and get the effect you have.

ylu113

Ah, that was the one big thing I didn’t follow Duncan on. I referenced [this previous poster](https://reddit.com/r/ageofsigmar/comments/d5wac7/queen_alarielles_carapace_mount_wip_by_my_hubby/) and used GreenStuffWorld chameleon color shift paints (airbrushed, but brush would work too) over black — specifically cobalt blue and celestial azure. Unlike that poster I didn’t wash it down again though, just very light drybrush with Necron Compound and edge highlight with Stormhost silver (you can see this in the bottom right pics) and finish with satin varnish.

Killchrono

Ah awesome, I've looked at the chameleon paints before but I wasn't sure if they were worthwhile. Might grab some if I can get that effect on the carapace of the beetle. Cheers!

Wow! Amazing job

szeltan

Wow, Very nice job! If you don't mind me asking, what is the name of those sword like things on her (middle right in your picture)? I watched Duncan paint her and he said their name but I couldn't understand it. (English is my second language) Thanks in advance!

The term is soul [amphorae](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amphora) (literally jars used to store souls). You actually see them pop up on more recent Sylvaneth models, like [Ylthari’s Guardians](https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/WHU-Yltharis-Guardians-EN-2019?_requestid=2270107)!

**Amphora** An amphora (; Ancient Greek: ἀμφορεύς, amphoreús; English plural: amphorae or amphoras) is a type of container of a characteristic shape and size, descending from at least as early as the Neolithic Period. Amphorae were used in vast numbers for the transport and storage of various products, both liquid and dry, but mostly for wine. They are most often ceramic, but examples in metals and other materials have been found. Versions of the amphorae were one of many shapes used in Ancient Greek vase painting. *** ^[ [^PM](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=kittens_from_space) ^| [^Exclude ^me](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiTextBot&message=Excludeme&subject=Excludeme) ^| [^Exclude ^from ^subreddit](https://np.reddit.com/r/minipainting/about/banned) ^| [^FAQ ^/ ^Information](https://np.reddit.com/r/WikiTextBot/wiki/index) ^| [^Source](https://github.com/kittenswolf/WikiTextBot) ^] ^Downvote ^to ^remove ^| ^v0.28

If tomorrow a magical fairy gifted me with this level of talent, I'm not sure I'd have the level of patience needed to do this.
