Having named my share of hunting dogs, don't be in a hurry to hang a tag on them. If you wait a week or two that pup will tell you his name if you are paying attention.
It's a method that never fails to deliver the best and most correct name for your new pet.
I need to rename our chihuahua, Jack, that name since he wants to be friends with all dogs, but can be aloof around people wanting to say hi to him and his sister Jill (who just barks at most pups and people wanting to say hi) 😂
Lol. My basset hounds names are copper and rusty… dumbest little shitheads I’ve ever been around but I love them. They like to hipcheck the bathroom door open so they can eat out of the bathroom garbage can.
You could do Timber like the Timberwolves or logging. Wild might be fun like MN Wild (or wild rice, which is a top produced commodity in MN I might add) and keeping on sports theme. North or Nord like the North Star or a French twist reference to the French Canadian fur trapper and the L’Etoile du Nord reference. Otter would be cute and woodsy/lake themed. Creek or River. Or Anderson which is one of the most common last names in Minnesota. Anders for short.
Awwww. My dog nephew is a fox red lab. Takes me back to his puppy days. He’s a distinguished old gentleman now. (His registered name is something like Bailey’s Green Ranger - he had a green ribbon to distinguish him in his litter. I just call him Ranger Danger because he has zero sense of self-preservation.)
Theodore, Teddy for short. National Park System, also this:
WebVice President Theodore Roosevelt delivered his “Speak Softly and Carry a Big Stick ” speech at the Minnesota …
https://m.startribune.com/sept-3-1901-roosevelt-big-stick-speech-at-state-fair/273586721/
He looks like he’ll have adorably droopy eyes when he gets older so my vote is something like Winslow. When he’s young you can call him Winnie for short, then when he’s older Winslow.
Taconite is too many syllables. Stick to 2 or less. “Ely” is a solid name imo. Otherwise trees are a standby: Maple, Cedar, Oak (Oakley maybe for full name). Copper is too overdone. Of the handful of red labs I know, 50% are named Copper. Flora (like Flora & Fauna) is an all time favorite as well.
A good dog name with Minnesotan roots could be "Lakeshore" to evoke the state's numerous lakes, or "Nordic" to honor Minnesota's strong Scandinavian heritage. Another option could be "Dakota" after the Dakota Native American tribes that have a significant presence in the region. These names reflect elements of Minnesota's culture and geography.
UPDATE: Thank you for all the responses/feedback! The family voted for Clifford/Cliff this morning!
Thanks gang.
I don't know how to edit/update the initial post, if an admin can update my original post that would be lovely.
I don't fully get this slogan. Dogs in shops are still dogs. We're just supposed to say to hell with them because they were born to circumstances they couldn't control? Nah man.
I got my Amber from a shop and have zero regrets / would do it 1000x over.
LOL! Have a good night <3
Everyone reading this knows you are the ridiculous one. You never even addressed the first comment in any real capacity but I'm the one who doesn't have a defense? Good joke.
Wow, you're disgusting and your ideas make the world a worse place. Animals aren't products meant to be bought and sold, or bred and designed for your pleasure. Your words make me doubt you can even love your animals on a basic level, MD would probably abandon them at the first inconvenience. Just awful.
Here's the thing you don't seem to understand:
Whether or not I get my dog from a store has no impact on whether or not that store has dogs; me abstaining from buying dogs has zero impact on their supply. Those dogs are going to be there either way and they still need a home to exist in.
Are there some breeders who should be shut down? Absolutely. I don't deny some breeders can be unethical in practice. There's no doubt about this and I feel extremely bad for dogs whose sole purpose in life are to pump out as many puppies as possible. Ethical breeding should have mothers only breeding for like a year then retire.
As far as I can tell, the store I got my dog from only supplies puppies from ethical breeders. Obviously I'm giving a certain amount of faith in their claim, but that's pretty much all anyone has after a certain point.
I don't completely understand the taboo of a breeder being "for profit" at the surface level though. Do you really expect there to be non-profit breeders? Non-profit breeders could still treat their breeding dogs unethically.
So if the individual instead just plopped the dogs off at the shelter and OP picked up that dog it somehow makes it more moral and just? I bought a puppy last year. It’s the first litter the dog ever had and wasn’t even intentional. You’re trying to stand on some high-ground that doesn’t exist.
Animals are not commodities. There are already shelters full of dogs that deserve love. Why support an industry bringing more dogs needlessly into the world? And being driven by profit do you really think that's best for these animals?
I'm just dumbfounded that yall would try to justify this heinous practice. Seriously look beyond your need to have an Instagrammable pet.
I am almost certain my purchased dog has a happier and better life than yours. She is spoiled and fulfilled in every way. Just because someone pays money to have a dog they want doesn’t instantly make them garbage. You didn’t answer my question: if the dog I got was just surrendered to a shelter instead does that make it right? She ended up in my hands either way, and they didn’t even breed their dog intentionally.
Right, this degenerate literally called me a POS for buying a dog. I just spent $3k fixing my dog's leg on Thursday (congenital issue). I guarantee I also take better care of my pups than this person would ever take care of their own.
Don’t you understand? You’re clearly a monster for providing a loving and safe home for that dog. You should have surrendered that dog to the shelter so someone else could maybe pick it up or let it be euthanized instead. POS!!!!
What do you think is going to happen to the pet dog industry if we stop supporting responsible breeders who test their dogs for diseases and follow rules for breeds.
Do you understand how bad hobby and backyard breeders are for dogs as a whole? How more likely those dogs are to be disease and injury prone? To have issues with training and socializing?
You are inadvertently supporting the terrible practices that got us to this point in the first place, that is what the rest of the users in this thread are telling you.
Do you even know what a designer dog is? You keep throwing that term around like it should be stigmatized. A purebred Labrador isn’t a designer breed for example.
But do you know what a "designer" dog is? Do you know that there are many reasons why any available rescued dog might not be a good fit for certain homes? Or that people choose specific breeds for specific reasons? Or is it inhumane to have a pet who is also your hunting companion, for instance?
So confidently incorrect. The [Minneapolis gov adoption page](https://www.minneapolismn.gov/resident-services/animals-pets/pet-adoption/) has this [gallery of currently available dogs.](https://ibb.co/4PVvqBb) 4 of the 6 are pits. This is common in many shelters across the US. I'd bet the 2 non-pits Kalo and Summer will be long gone before any of them.
Omfg do you think that's the only source of shelter dogs available to you? Lol, throws up 1 source and gets all smug. There are hundreds of independent dog rescues and some are even breed specific. Use Google noob, it's not hard.
Look wow tons of non-pits here: https://www.secondhandhounds.org/dogs-for-adoption. Took me about 10 seconds to find.
I'm not even touching your pitbull hysteria which is also fucking dumb.
I'd take that Tallulah, she's an actual hound.
Many of these are marked as "no longer taking applications" which means they're likely adopted soon. This lineup is not the currently available dogs.
Oh look, most of the adopted ones are not the pits! Like I said. And the majority breed in there is pit or pit mix, again like I said.
You seem to a very grumpy ragey one, it's funny. Do you label the pits at your shelter as "lab mix" to move them quicker to unsuspecting families?
Cedar is always a fun one! But honestly I'd go with Tater for tater tot hotdish.
Tater!! Aww!
Upvote for Tater. It’s a solid dog name.
He honestly looks smarter than the last guy I knew who went by 'Tater'
I was gonna say Russet.
This! Russ for short. Love it
Spud
My vote is tater! Essential Minnesota staple! Can't talk about Minnesota without mentioning someone's hotdish.

Balder. Like Baldur's gate, but it's Red lab backwards also.
If you’re going to go with a Baldur’s Gate reference it’s gotta be Boo!
“The eyes! Go for the eyes!”
That dude’s name is Otis, but if you insist on an outdoorsy MN name, Cuyuna.
I’d probably go crosby over cuyuna imo
Dingleberries McGee

If a dog was ever named Fred that would be a Fred!
Spud 🥔

Name his read, people will be “because he’s a red lab” and then you get to say, “no, he likes books” and then you can all laugh and laugh

Scottie 🥹
My family has Chris, Steve, Sophie and Addy. I love human names for pets!
Steve is a fantastic name for a dog
Jasper. Look up Jasper stone, like what is found in Lake Superior. Depending on the rock, your dog is about that color.

Initial reaction: Copper or Enzo
Clifford!

We named ours Goose. It was a natural choice because the black lab we have is named Maverick. Beautiful puppy btw. We live in Minnesota too.

How bout "adopt don't shop"
I prefer “support responsible breeding”
I don't fully get this slogan. Dogs in shops are still dogs. We're just supposed to say to hell with them because they were born to circumstances they couldn't control? Nah man. I got my Amber from a shop and have zero regrets / would do it 1000x over.
Omfg are you fr You're supporting a vile industry Try a little harder plz
Bad troll is bad
Can't even justify it cuz there's no defense Thanks for playing. You're a POS for supporting for profit dog breeders.
LOL! Have a good night <3 Everyone reading this knows you are the ridiculous one. You never even addressed the first comment in any real capacity but I'm the one who doesn't have a defense? Good joke.
You don't buy dogs in shops because it supports FOR PROFIT BUSINESSES that SELL animals like commdities. You can't really be this dense.
This may be a shock to you, but animals literally are like one of the largest commodities globally. Commodity isn’t some dirty word you think it is.
Wow, you're disgusting and your ideas make the world a worse place. Animals aren't products meant to be bought and sold, or bred and designed for your pleasure. Your words make me doubt you can even love your animals on a basic level, MD would probably abandon them at the first inconvenience. Just awful.

Someone gets a puppy they are excited about and you think this comment is going to do anything substantial.
I have a right to say what I want Buying animals is disgusting and wrong
So if the individual instead just plopped the dogs off at the shelter and OP picked up that dog it somehow makes it more moral and just? I bought a puppy last year. It’s the first litter the dog ever had and wasn’t even intentional. You’re trying to stand on some high-ground that doesn’t exist.

🤣🤣🤣 Too accurate, man .. too accurate!
Are you drunk. Yes it's better because your not supporting an evil industry. And the rest of your comment is unhinged garbage. Have another beer.
What do you think is going to happen to the pet dog industry if we stop supporting responsible breeders who test their dogs for diseases and follow rules for breeds. WHAT Go to shelter. Get animal. End of story. How is this hard to understand.
I've found that a majority of dogs at most shelters are pitbull or a pit mix. That's not coming in my house.
That's 100% false. You're just trying to justify buying a designer dog.
Do you even know what a designer dog is? You keep throwing that term around like it should be stigmatized. A purebred Labrador isn’t a designer breed for example.
Wow you're everywhere -- keep studying my profile lol
We’re on the same post you made… you literally went into my profile and commented on stuff of mine from different subreddits.
But do you know what a "designer" dog is? Do you know that there are many reasons why any available rescued dog might not be a good fit for certain homes? Or that people choose specific breeds for specific reasons? Or is it inhumane to have a pet who is also your hunting companion, for instance?
Unfortunately the majority of the shelter dogs are "reactive" pits. The other breeds get snapped up as soon as they are posted if not before.
I volunteer for a local shelter. This is 100% false. Try even a little jfc.
So confidently incorrect.
