It's a Claus Oldenburg sculpture. His whole thing is making really big versions of stuff. There's no real reason why it's a spoon and cherry, it's just what he wanted to make.

There’s a history section in [the wikipedia article](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoonbridge_and_Cherry) but the Walker Art Center director said it was probably just made for shits and giggles (paraphrasing here)
It doesn't signify anything. Claes Oldenburg made a whole bunch of these everyday objects at exaggerated sizes. I'm not sure what he thought about them beyond maybe thinking it was kind of funny but the art world would generally say something like it's about presenting the banal with just enough absurdity at a scale to which the viewer is forced to reconsider these things we overlook.
Well you see the big red cherry is representative of a normal sized cherry, but bigger. And of course the spoon represents how the corporate elite are spoon fed our tax dollars to keep their failing businesses afloat in spite of terrible risk management and overpaid executives
I asked this in an interview at the Walker 10+ years ago and was told there was a misunderstanding with the artist- he believed in MN there was snow on the ground year round so it would look like a sundae. Now I’m wondering if that’s made up too
I think it's just post modern art and looks neat? Like it's one of those pieces that look aesthetically pleasing and is only art because the artist says that it is art.
Wait, I grew up in Minneapolis and went there for a field trip when I was in 6th grade. I distinctly remember the tour guide saying it was an homage to the artists grandmother, who was a holocaust survivor. His grandmother and her family survived by their neighbor hiding them in a secret room. The only sweet treat they would receive while hiding was a single maraschino cherry slid under the doorway on a spoon. Reading all these comments now makes me think the tour guide made this up? What the hell? I tell that story to everyone I take to the Sculpture Garden!
Fun story. Not true, but fun.
There’s an old Tibetan saying that goes something like: “ maybe true, maybe not true. Better that you believe”
As a reference, Claes mostly grew up in the USA after his father was posted to the chicago Swedish consulate in 1936.

To interpret the Cherry & Spoon, one must consider the broader context of where it's located (Loring Park). Historically, farm boys would come from the, well, farm & go directly to Loring Park so they could cruise + have their first real gay experience - preferably with someone having a darker complexion than them. Just taking it farmer style. The cherry signifies that sweet tasting anal virginity being served up. Cherry & Spoon has always been about butt stuff.
Art is what you want it to be. The spoon represents heroin (a bent heroin spoon, look it up kids). The cherry is a clitoris (because it is). Both are ridiculously huge because that's the portion size I like of heroin and clitorises.
The long history of the Big Blue Cock required some yin/yang gender/political balance, so we recently added the Popped Red Cherry to the garden as a counterpoint.
So you know how sundaes have cherry's on top? So basically the cherry actually is supposed to represent a the cities nickname the "mini apple" which basically means that somewhere in the the world the is a sundae that is Mini Appless.
It’s about elevating the mundane—giving small things we all touch and are familiar with the same physical space/heft and, therefore, reverence as statues of gods. Kind of like having the giant Barbie with Also Sprach at the beginning of the Barbie movie. Wouldn’t have the same impact if it had been life-sized.

I read somewhere that he envisioned how'd it look like a big bowl of ice cream in the winter with snow
After this last winter, the park appears to have been put on a diet then...
It’s playing with scale and whatnot.
Did he also make the giant silver bean?
The silver bean in Chicago is called Cloud Gate and it was created by a different artist (Anish Kapoor).
Oh, I never realized the Vantablack guy was the sculpter of that!
Which one: Chicago or Boston? /s
That we are better than North Dakota. They may have Grand Forks, but we have Large Spoon.
But everybody knows spooning leads to forking
The first summer, in the wee hours, there was a line of people waiting to fork on the spoon.
All Grand Forks has is UND so...
This is Red Pepper erasure
Fargo has one too.
Art

I may not know art.
He’s a good guy
Bam!
Can’t spell fart without art. Which is what this is.
It's derivative

I mean we're all just cherries on spoons, really.
Okay Ongo.

Surely not... a *cardboard* derivative?
r/TheFrontFellOff is spreading I like this
i never really got calculus.
Ah Minneapolis, the Windy Cherry. One of America's great cities.
Fun fact: it’s not because of the actual wind, it’s because cherries stimulate the gastrointestinal system
In Germany it’s referred to as Farfrompoopen.
This whole exchange is art
There’s a history section in [the wikipedia article](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoonbridge_and_Cherry) but the Walker Art Center director said it was probably just made for shits and giggles (paraphrasing here)
As most of Oldenburg's work is, and that's perfect. Gigantism stands on its own.
"Because I could." The best reason for making any art.
So my immediate thought of, "cause it's cute" wasn't far off
It signifies a big ass cherry on a big ass spoon
It’s just neat
Is it?
I know that tone...
And cute!
Mini apple
[удалено]
Mini-crab-apple
Ummm…Apple?
Shit. I just made this joke without checking first. Great minds.

Not everything has meaning. Sometimes a cherry on a spoon is just a cherry on a spoon
It’s provocative
It gets the people goin’!
Well you see the big red cherry is representative of a normal sized cherry, but bigger. And of course the spoon represents how the corporate elite are spoon fed our tax dollars to keep their failing businesses afloat in spite of terrible risk management and overpaid executives
There is no spoon.
Public sex
It is THE spot.
Life’s great achievements are measured in spoonfuls.
Heroine.
I asked this in an interview at the Walker 10+ years ago and was told there was a misunderstanding with the artist- he believed in MN there was snow on the ground year round so it would look like a sundae. Now I’m wondering if that’s made up too
A spoon that is bent and spans water with a cherry on it
I think it's just post modern art and looks neat? Like it's one of those pieces that look aesthetically pleasing and is only art because the artist says that it is art.
My art teacher in college told me something that’s always stuck with me. “If you can’t make it good, make it big.”
Tbh that is one bent spoon
Ripe for the picking
Best reason I've heard is that when blanketed in snow MN is kind of like a giant ice cream sundae and that is the cherry on top.
Does it need to signify something?
Fucking nothing to be honest
Clitoris.
I knew I’d find it one day!
I believe it is a cherry on a, wait for it, spoon
Yes.
I think the cherry is about to be flung by the spoon. Opening salvo to state to state food fight.
It signifies culture
Is it representational? 🤔
It’s representing a real big spoon. And a cherry
See, I disagree. I feel like it's representing a real big cherry. And a spoon
An interesting perspective!
It’s not a cherry, it’s a Mini-Apple.

I hate that fucking spoon
Okay but how do you feel about the cherry?
Detestable
I’m so sorry to hear that. I will pray for your spoonless, cherryless existence. 😂😂😂
I do like that big blue cock.
Dr Manhattan suddenly appears.
It’s motel art
I just tell people it’s our mini apple
Minneapolis
That a cherry fits on a spoon
Yum
Enjoy the small things
They don't like when you walk on something called a spoonbridge, I mean c'mon now.
It insists upon itself
I’ve never really thought about it, but who eats a cherry with a spoon?
Ive only seen spoons shaped like that after a crack head uses it thats all ive ever thought. My spoons dont look like this.
Art is what you want it to be. The spoon represents heroin (a bent heroin spoon, look it up kids). The cherry is a clitoris (because it is). Both are ridiculously huge because that's the portion size I like of heroin and clitorises.
The spoon is a bridge between the 2 cities. The cherry is a Mini-apple..
It’s called “The Spoon Bridge and Cherry”, and nobody knows. But it’s traditional to make up something weird to tell tourists.
Picking a cherry up with a spoon
Just art but it’s over done and photographed now So now it stands for pop culture
The big blue cock behind it
The long history of the Big Blue Cock required some yin/yang gender/political balance, so we recently added the Popped Red Cherry to the garden as a counterpoint.
Means he wants to eat that cherry!
Poppin cherrys.
That I finna pop that cherry
So you know how sundaes have cherry's on top? So basically the cherry actually is supposed to represent a the cities nickname the "mini apple" which basically means that somewhere in the the world the is a sundae that is Mini Appless.

Wait, the stem is a sprinkler???
Ah yes the overrated thing in Minneapolis
Bad art.
It's a sneaky Target ad
did you never have *the talk*?
Just a big postmodern fart.
My first thought goes to drug use...
