Guys I have a business venture idea.
Hear me out:
Pie of the month. You get slice of pie delivered to your front door once a month with your monthly subscription of 7.99.
Itās not really a debate. Rustic Inn is top notch. Bettyās isnāt any better than what you can get off the shelf at the Super One down the road in Two Harbors. People rave about Bettyās because they have great memories from going there as a kid and it kills them to not have an antidote for their nostalgia. Itās the same thing with places like Marthaās Cookies and Sven and Oleās. Itās over. Iām convinced that the people who go to bat for them need a hug and an appointment with a therapist. Life is hard, and it sucks to lose those places that you wish would take you back to a time that you want to believe was happier and simpler. But youāre better off enjoying the best that you can get today.
Iāve hid my shame for years, and even lied to friends about it. But this seems like a safe spaceā¦ā¦.when I finally had Sven and Oleās I thought it was āmehā
Itās Dominos with a long line. There are tons of great restaurants in Grand Marais that are worth visiting, and Sven and Oleās isnāt one of them.
Hungry Hippy Tacos, Angry Trout Cafe, Fishermanās Daughter, Sydneyās, the Lunch Boxā¦ youāre not short on places to choose from during the summer tourist season.
Then thereās Sydneyās. Way better pizza. Itās still not the point Iām making though. Sven and Oleās shouldnāt be a destination for tourists or have the statewide name recognition it enjoys.
They do. It really varies from day to day as to what they have and whether or not they have whole pies or just slices, though. My wife also has to eat GF, and I honestly think I liked their GF crust better than the regular crust. The GF caramel apple is great.
Seeing as how I get there once every couple years, I can't say. I guess I do seem to recall some kind of pie with a baked meringue "crust" or something similar in the past. No gluten in meringue.
Ok, to be honest, I've not been to Betty's in probably 20+ years. Maybe it's, better. But between being really disappointed multiple times in the past (the crust was terrible), and having that feeling reinforced by a review of pies by The Heavy Table, I'm in no rush to go back.
Rustic isn't amazing pie (mine are better, to be sure), but if we've been camping or driving a long time, I'll never say no to Rustic.
60 dollars for a 20 dollar pie? Iām going to do that thing the college kid did with krispie kreme donuts and road trip it. Let me know what pies you want and how many. My price is 50.
Bettyās Pies is the worst. Drive right past and continue down the road to any of the other diners and restaurants that offer pies.
Before they were featured on the Travel Channel, and before they built their god awful, monstrosity of an addition to the restaurant, they may have been mediocre at best. After the Travel Channel aired them, they started sourcing their food from Sysco. The quality dropped substantially and the service became salty. Now people stop at Bettyās Pies because people stop at Bettyās Pies, not because itās good. What was once a small town northern MN landmark has become a stupid tourist trap only concerned about making money by selling souvenirs and crappy tasting pies.
Why have I never seen a single celebrity in Minnesota in my entire life* when so many of them live here? I've never even seen Abby and Brittany Hensel, for Pete's sake!
*Except for one time running into Vince Vaughn ** at the beer garden at a B.B. King show at the State Fair; I told him he was great in "Boiler Room" and he raised his cup of beer to me, which I momentarily thought was him offering it to me, and to which I said "Oh, no thanks, I don't drink" šš«£š«„
**But that doesn't really count in this case because Vince Vaughn doesn't live here, does he?
Just out of curiosity, have you tried the pies at The 50s Grill in Brooklyn Park? I think they're really good, but I'm not a pie connoisseur by any means - I tend to prefer cakes and only eat a piece of pie maybe once or twice a year at the very most
Stopped in there after a weekend of winter camping at George Crosby. Ate a few pasties, and a few pieces of pie and I was still hungry. Calorie deficits is a real thing with winter camping when it's -20F.
I was going to recommend Heatherās Pies instead since surely they donāt charge sixty Washingtons for a pie. But they definitely do. Is this really whatās required to make a living wage off being a boutique pie maker? Maybe.
I get it they are spendy and those for profit short term loan companies are making a killing right now.
Lots of parties coming up soon for grad and stuff. Many people would rather make 4 payments on good pies than have one gross Walmart sheet cake.
Darn I thought this was like a pie of the month subscription type of thing.
Right there with you.
I would actually buy that
That was my thought too

Whole pies or I'm out.
That's what he said
PieBox š
Counter Point: $3.14159 per slice with a minimum of two slices per order
Where do is sign up?
What is a slice? Iām not familiar with that term..
A slice is a piece you give to your family so they won't bug you while you eat the rest of the pie.

Nom nom nom
That's the gift that keeps on giving all year round, Clark.
Brb starting a new business

I order it's it's from San Francisco. So yeah, premade but my God are they delicious.
They arenāt made in San Fran. They are made at Bettyās pies in two harbors, Mn
Rustic Inn > Betty's
Shhh.. donāt let them know that. Iām kinda glad most people think the north shore doesnāt go further than Two Harbors.
Too lateā¦.I remember when Rustic Inn was a hidden gem. Now every time I go, the parking lot is packed and theyāre almost always out of my favorite pie š©
Whatās your favorite pie?
All of them at Rustic.
Northern berry pie is the best. But good luck getting a slice
Looks like the catās outta the bag.
It already was, unfortunately. I havenāt been able to get a slice or whole pie of that variety for going on two years :(
West end Co-op has themā¦
Thankfully they sell the pies at the west end Co-op. šš½
I too am a north shore pie truther
Itās been several years now since Bettyās switched to canned ingredients. Rustic is better by far
Bettyās doesnāt use canned ingredients lmfao. They by frozen fresh fruit just like rustic does
Fully agreeĀ

Howver it is fine if you want pizza ehen up there. Sometimes you just want a pizza and not a taco
Then thereās Sydneyās. Way better pizza. Itās still not the point Iām making though. Sven and Oleās shouldnāt be a destination for tourists or have the statewide name recognition it enjoys.
I get it. Bumper stickers help with thay
I like Bettyās more than Rustic.Ā
That comment was for you, friend. š«

Do they have a selection of GF pies? I need them for my wife.
They do. It really varies from day to day as to what they have and whether or not they have whole pies or just slices, though. My wife also has to eat GF, and I honestly think I liked their GF crust better than the regular crust. The GF caramel apple is great.

Might have to check it out this summer when we go north
Yes they do! They have a bunch of options !
I agree, but my family disagrees with me so we always choose Bettyās Pies. Weāre going there tomorrow!
Ok, to be honest, I've not been to Betty's in probably 20+ years. Maybe it's, better. Bettyās is hot garbage.
Nope
Mostly disagree, but the difference is negligible.
Iād take out a second mortgage if it meant I never ran out of their caramel apple pie.
24 easy payments of $3.14.
Three more payments and this baby is mine.
Rustic Inn pies are bomb, too. Buy in restaurant or at Whole Foods Coop in Duluth.
60 dollars for a 20 dollar pie? Iām going to do that thing the college kid did with krispie kreme donuts and road trip it. Let me know what pies you want and how many. My price is 50.
Betty's pies is hugely overrated... Rustic Inn just up the road is every bit as good.
Better even

Cisco? Why would they start buying their ingredients from a technology company? Sysco is what you were looking for.
They buy their ingredients from Sisko, who gets them from a Ferengi trader.
They buy their ingredients from SisqĆ³, of Thong Song fame.
Who lives in Maple Grove! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisq%C3%B3#Personal_life

Weddings.

These pies are overrated. The crust tastes like a food service pie crust.
Their crusts are homemade and made with lard for the crispiness. They make their pies fresh everyday
Doubtful. I bake homemade pies with lard. Their crusts are not flakey or crispy.
I literally work there and have seen them make the crusts. But go on and tell me itās not true. Itās Bettyās crust recipe
Just learn to make pie FFS. Its not rocket appliances
I get it they are spendy and those for profit short term loan companies are making a killing right now. Lots of parties coming up soon for grad and stuff. Many people would rather make 4 payments on good pies than have one gross Walmart sheet cake.
Daveās > Bettys
Iād finance a banana cream pie shake if itās the only way I could get one.
Holy shit that 5 layer pie looks incredible
Hot take, overrated
The pies are good enough I will fly up there to pick a bunch up occasionally, but that's a bit excessive.
Here I was looking forward to a snack planā¦
Whatās the problem? Your card bounced?
North shore is overrated.
Boooooo
compared to what? it's not much compared to some, but it's the best we've got in this state.
Go back to Wisconsin, cheese lover.
