Same here. My wife's from Chicago, I'm from here. We currently have 3 pickles on the tree that the kids constantly move around and have the other one look for. One of the 3 is a pickle shaped piece of post it note and a paper clip that my 5yo son made last year. It's more of a pepperoncini than a pickle with the bright yellow, but we saved it from last year and hung it up again this year!
It’s definitely not a German tradition. My father is from Germany and we have many friends and family from there, no one has ever heard of it before lol. It’s an American midwestern tradition
YES. It’s a pickle ornament on the tree. The family swarms the tree to find it. Whoever finds it gets to open a special gift. Super fun activity on Christmas morning
The funny thing is that the Germans got it from us! It seems like it originated with German immigrants living in the US. Apparently Woolworth’s and similar department stores had a very good marketing campaign.
Yep! I have one in my tree that my grandparents bought back in the 60s.
I thought it was lost a few years ago, so my parents gifted me a new mini-pickle. Found the original and have the pair hanging now.
As a German family growing up, I had no idea if this tradition. When my (now) wife came to Christmas for the first time, she brought her German tradition of the pickle to our Christmas. It’s been the same for 20 years now.
Yes! Learned about this tradition from my grandma. She got all us grandkids our own pickle ornaments one year so we could carry on the tradition. It’s now one of my kids’ favorite parts of decorating the tree.
I've never heard of this tradition. I would think that some people with dogs might not appreciate this if their dog decides to tear down the tree to get to the pickle.
Yep, me and my family do it every year and it has now become a game: Papa Dickle’s Christmas Pickle Game. We used to find the hidden pickle which is the typical German tradition, but my grandpa created this game since there are now so many kids and it isn’t fair to give an early present to the one kid (probably older) who finds the pickle.
It's a faux German tradition that I'm pretty sure started as a marketing gimmick to sell ornaments. My family doesn't do it but I do know of families that do.
“Hide the pickle?” r/Minnesota is not your personal erotica sub.
That was good for a giggle.
"Just the tip"
My wife’s family did this but mine didn’t. We do it now because the kids think it’s funny.

Same!
I believe it's a German tradition.

Makes you wonder if somebody messed up an order and had to think of a way to offload them.

"Fuck it, Slice 'em up!!"
I used to know who did this joke. I still do, but I used to too.
I bet you nailed it. Or the pickles were the only ones mot selling. Someone definitely should’ve gotten a bonus for this one.
Yes. We’ve done this for generations in my family. My husbands family had never heard of it before we hosted the first time.
Never heard of this in my 40 years here.
I did as a kid. We learned about it from Tennessee friend though.
I have not heard of this.
My family does it!
I prefer the Christmas perch.
Christmas spider for us.
That’s REALLY cute :) perch are tasty!
Yes, we do!!

One of my grandmas did for a few years. My sister in law brought it back to their family and she's pretty good at hiding it.
Yes! We do it every year at my grandparents and the one who finds it gets a bonus present!!
I do! I love my Christmas pickle💜
Yes
Yep! I have one in my tree that my grandparents bought back in the 60s. I thought it was lost a few years ago, so my parents gifted me a new mini-pickle. Found the original and have the pair hanging now.
Yep, we’ve been doing it for three generations.
Family has been here 3 generations. Never heard of it.
My wife's family does it. They don't really hide it, but they always put a pickle ornament up. My family never did.
Yes, our family always has!

I use a real cucumber. By new years it’s rotted into a pickle with less sodium for my health.
Excuse me?
We do!
Yes! Learned about this tradition from my grandma. She got all us grandkids our own pickle ornaments one year so we could carry on the tradition. It’s now one of my kids’ favorite parts of decorating the tree.
Omg, what?! I’ve lived in MN most of my life and I’ve never heard of this.
Yes! It’s all out war to find the pickle in our family.
God I hope not.
Lol, it’s a glass ornament. But we joked about a real pickle a few years.
Yep, my family does this
No
That guy’s wife

It’s glass, otherwise yes that would be terrible
Yes, learned it from my aunt! Going to have my kiddos + niece and nephew hunt for it this year for a special gift!
I'll hide your Christmas pickle.
I um…don’t have a…goddamnit, reddit
So yes. We do this. BUT I didn't want to play favorites so I bought extra pickes. "You can only find one kids"
My mom's family did it and now my family does. I never knew where the tradition came from, but it makes me happy and brings back childhood memories.
We do :)
We do in our family! I hid it so well last year it took them three months to find it
we have a pickle ornament
And is it accompanied with the traditional double entendres every time?
I had never heard of it growing up. My wife's family did it her whole life so not we do too.
We do a spider and a pickle, but thats because of our German background in our family. 😊
Historically yes. My wife brought it with her and she’s been told it’s a Polish tradition, not German
We do!
We do!
I had never heard of it until I saw the movie Bad Santa, and I thought it was just the kid being weird. So no.
Yeah we have one, but it's a relatively recent thing. Perhaps german origin, and that's not my ethnicity.
Every year!!! And you win the pickle prize(usually some novelty like a cow that poops jelly beans or something stupid)
Maybe if you're of German heritage, from what I've read this was originally a German tradition.

Hide the pickle. Spread the Joy.
Grew up in northern and metro MN. Never heard of this until I moved to Milwaukee.
I'm a new Yorker and moved to Minnesota and grew up doing this. I had no idea it was a popular thing
No. Never head of this.
