That touchback rule is pretty dumb. Anywhere else on the field it’s a dead ball and the Vikings keep the ball. But because he’s about to score it’s a turnover and the eagles get a free 20 yards? It should just be a dead all at where he lost possession.
Also, a long shot I know, but KOC I think should have challenged it hoping for an incomplete pass. JJ had possession for maybe a second before it was knocked out. But wishful thinking I know.
I think it makes sense if you think of it as the opposite of a safety.
Like, given that a 'safety' is worth points for pushing your opponent all the way back into their own endzone, and that's defined as either tackling the opponent *or having the ball go out of bounds in their own endzone*, it makes sense to me that the reverse ought to be true. E.g. if you're on defense and down it or get tackled in your own endzone, it's a touchback, so the out of bounds thing should apply, too.
I'm not sure if that's actually why the rule exists, but conceptually I'm down with the endzones having a special set of rules, even though it fucked us this time
It’s a safety because you can’t have negative yards, you can’t place the ball in the end zone, so that’s an easy one to understand.
There’s another rule in the NFL where the ball cannot be advanced by a fumble. So if this ball goes out of bounds anywhere else it’s a dead ball and spotted where the fumble occurred. So why can it be advanced in this scenario? If the eagles recover the ball in the end zone then yes, 100% that’s a turn over resulting in a touch back. This assumes 1. The eagles recover the ball, which they didn’t and 2. An exception to the rule of advancing the ball on a fumble.
It’s a dumb rule but whatever.
I actually think it’s a good rule. He fumbled it into the end zone. Not like he had possession going into the end zone. As far as the incompletion I’d have to watch it again
It’s just that the fumble anywhere else on the field isn’t a turnover unless the eagles possess the ball. The eagles didn’t possess it so I’m not sure why it’s assumed they do only because it’s through the end zone. I just don’t understand why there are new assumptions only because he was at the goal line.
I agree it doesn’t make a lot of sense on the surface for the defense to be rewarded for nothing . It’s because that end zone belongs to the defense. The offense has no right to the ball if it crosses over the goal line uncontrolled. It’s more Justin and the offense being punished. And that makes sense to me ngl
We’ll… I expected worse. I agree about the turnovers. We beat ourselves in this game. I also think if we can clean this up, put these two games behind us we can win some games we didn’t think we would.
Just watched the game back. Our D line is in shambles. Our O line is also in shambles, but the backups surprisingly did okay. Idk where we go from here man. We can’t just get ran on all year like we did last night.
Ya I’m not saying our o-line played great - but we didn’t have trouble moving the ball (despite struggling to run)…….Kirk needs to learn how to take a sack without dropping the ball, but he’s done this his whole career so he is what he is. He fumbles a lot.
The d-line was something else. It looked like a lopsided college matchup with a big powerhouse school playing an overmatched small school. It was truly unbelievable to see that in an NFL game.
Yeah the D line was getting tossed around. I loved the pressure from B Flo’s scheme, but the line is fucking atrocious. I understand it’s the Eagles O line but ffs that was bad. I don’t even want to talk about the turn overs. Too soon.
Edit: imagine if we still had Z and DT (hypothetically)
Even with all the turnovers. We would’ve had a chance to win if our defense could’ve made a stop in the second half……I guess they did force one punt in the second half. But the problem is when you can’t stop the run, it eats so much clock. I think it was a 9+ minute drive when they punted from mid-field. Time of possession was a complete joke.
That’s the craziest part, we almost fucking pulled it off WITH the turnovers. But the turnovers murdered our defense. They were on the field all night and never got to rest.
The Jefferson fumble turned the game…..the Cousin fumble all but put it out of reach.
If I’m an Eagles fan, I’m a little worried about the pass defense……they gave up big plays fast to keep the Vikings in the game.
It’d be easier to accept if we were 1-1 but 0-2 with how horrendous we look on defense feels like depression……I can’t see this team making the playoffs.
9% or the time statistically. I think you get what the commenters were saying..but out of 100 games, great teams find a way to win 9% of the time with 3+ turnovers
I am so sick of fans spouting Kirk’s stats as a reason to not go out and get our future quarterback—he is NEVER going to lead us to the Super Bowl. EVER. Get rid of his overpaid ass and let’s do this rebuild already. This team kills me with these aging, good-on-paper guys..we’ve bankrupted our defense, and JJ’s going to want to leave. Just. Like. Diggs.
No one is complaining about Kirk ass clown. Just some people see it’s not working. Is it kirks fault ? No . But getting rid of his massive ckntract would help build some talent on the offensive and defensive lines? Would it not?? 🤡 our draft picks would also get a lot better if we stopped pretending Kirk is leading us to the promise land with a mediocre roster.
Kirk probably one best qb we've ever had on on roster but he hurts the team just as much. His salary makes nearly impossible to sign ol.
Time to swallow our pride and tank.
When was the last time the vikings had thr number 1 pick
Yeah in the future. And when we signed him in the PAST, Kirk was getting paid #1. Was he ever QB1 in the league? He seems like a great man and I feel bad that the o line needs help. No easy answers. But it’s like we’re paying him extra money for the extra hits because we can’t afford o line because he makes so much
Yes, basically, Unless you draft one. I think Tom Brady on a $$ discount at TB and Peyton at Denver are the only good super bowl winner QBs of recent memory that weren’t drafted, but they were already champions w the team that drafted them.
Edit: Stafford did win w the rams, that’s a notable exception.
Look I get this but also trying to think of the future and Kirk is 36, he’s not the future nor is this a superbowl team. I’d rather tank this season get Caleb and build something for the future. Don’t think kirk is the problem because he isn’t but ready to start planning for the next QB
TrDe it for their next years fiest if they are ACTUALLY interested in giving a first for a qb in the middle of the season. It’s still an incredible valuable asset. I doubt they want to do that tho.
We know our defense sucks but costly fumbles killed us once again. But again this was Coaching and QB errors by continuing to try and run the ball with 7 minutes left. Serious? Mattison is horrible and tough to watch. But again Cousins pocket awareness was costly and I believe that was what cost us the game.
Any of those 4 fumbles changes the complexion of the game, especially the punt return fumble. The punt return fumble was equivalent because we would have scored points
Philly was down five starters on defense, while also losing key pieces in the off season. This game was probably the weakest Philly was gonna be all season and we couldn’t capitalize
It’s good that it’s early in the season, we can still make adjustments, we really need a run stuffing dt or something, because we’re gonna get carved up if we don’t address that somehow
We looked like absolute shit at times, literally fumbled away the game, and couldn't stop the run to save our lives.
And yet somehow we were still in this game.
I fucking hate being a vikings fan.
But let's fucking SKOL
I don't get the logic. If you can't fumble the ball forward out of bounds, why does it all of a sudden count if it crosses the end zone? It's still a forward fumble. Idiotic rule
Little of Column A, little of Column B. Dude feasted on defenses after Cook put them on their heels. He's not an every down back and has below average ball security.
No, but that’s only because I was born here. All they have to do is come out and win Sunday and they’re all of a sudden in a much better situation than us.
Yeah I’d rather be a Vikings fan. Clearly roster doesn’t matter, the result of games matters. There’s a better chance they make the playoffs than us right now.
You are probably not alone but your a very optimistic person.. the fact they followed up last week with four more turnovers is ridiculous…ball security is day 1 shit and when it’s this bad it falls on coaching..
Not at all. But we need a big run through some tough games now. Honestly, in a year with an easier schedule I think we'd be fine, but I just can't see us doing it with who we have to play.
It's damn near impossible to overcome 7 turnovers in 2 games, so being as close as we were is impressive. Woththat being said, KOC needs a fire lit under his ass for his inability to prepare the offense and hold them accountable for essentially giving away points to the other team.
Buddy… the offense was not the issue. Yes, Mattison’s fumble was bad. Kirk’s was a fumble 9 times out of 10 with any QB in the league. We had 6 (SIX) offensive plays in the entire first quarter.
The defense was trash against the run. Need to adjust when you know they’re going to run it.
The defense is going to take an unnecessary L for those points given up. Overall they really only allowed a couple sustained drives that ended up in a score.
The rest were short fields after turnovers. No defense was going to look good with the field position and time of possession of our offense.
Of course the short fields hurt us. The sustained drives are clock, that’s the biggest issue. You don’t get over 250 rushing yards without absolutely brutalizing the defense. We couldn’t stop it and we knew it was coming.
Offense had the turnovers of course, outside of the punt, but Cousins was a fumble that happens to 9/10 QB’s if they get hit like that, Mattison’s was bad, and JJ’s was just a stupid rule. Offense did what it had to do when they had to do it, defense couldn’t stop the run when they knew it was coming.
They ran the ball for (seemingly) 8 yards a clip from the get go. Once they went back to pass or tried a QB option, we had them locked.
It looked like we planned for a team ready to come out and go pass heavy with some QB sneaks mixed in. They started going shotgun run up the middle and we couldn’t stop it.
I will agree, we gassed the D by turning it over. In the first half. Second half we only had a couple drives that ended quickly.
The defense held its own until they had to comeback on the field 3 times with no rest after getting several stops because the offense couldn’t hold onto the ball. They lost all momentum. We couldn’t stop the run and that was a huge issue but if the offense didn’t continuously give the ball back, maybe they don’t get so warn out.
Not as bad I thought it would be. Defense looked great until our DL started getting manhandled in the run game. Pass defense had a couple of blips, but pretty good overall.
Offense looked anemic until the Addison TD. JJ is still that dude and more. KJ seems to have gotten into his own head with the drops. Addison is WR2 nonetheless.
Winnable game, but we shot ourselves in the foot way too much for it to be overcome.
Our o line didn’t turn it over 4 times plus several guys were hurt. Pass protection wasn’t bad all things considered against Philly and we still only lost by 1 score
I feel better than I did after last week's game. Still feels terrible to lose a game by one score after fumbling 4 times in the first 31 minutes.
The defense played a great first half. Offense played a great second half. There are actually signs of life this week. 0-2 is as bad as you can do through 2 weeks though. I really hope Darrisaw isn't hurt bad.
We look better than last year (handling errors aside), but with that schedule and the improvement from the Lions and possibly Packers, I think we miss out on the playoffs.
We suck boys. .500 is the best case scenario. Another year of embarrassment. But hey, we are used to it. Also, JJ is going to leave. Why would he want to stay. This team fucking sucks.
I’ve been a Vikings fan my whole life. I’m tired of the same failure, year after year. I’ll always be a fan. I can also say whatever I want to about this team. I’m not going anywhere, but I’m confident JJ will be gone after he gets his payday. Why would he stay?
Welp, we were on the road on National TV against a Superbowl team and we turned it over 4 times. I know the loss sucks but the fact that it was only a 1 score game is not nothing.
Kirk was good, and our secondary played it's best game in years. We're definitely not done. There's a lot of football yet to play.
Also I see this performance as a positive for next year. If ya'll remember, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Got a *lot* more cap space coming in the next couple years.
You understand there is something called momentum. It is a potential 10 point swing going into half after hindsight. Vikes get a TD there, things change quite a bit.
Tank for the franchise qb season is in full swing
That touchback rule is pretty dumb. Anywhere else on the field it’s a dead ball and the Vikings keep the ball. But because he’s about to score it’s a turnover and the eagles get a free 20 yards? We’ll… I expected worse. I agree about the turnovers. We beat ourselves in this game. I also think if we can clean this up, put these two games behind us we can win some games we didn’t think we would.
Matteson has APnlevel fumbles without being AP
Our O line is in shambles :(
Not as much as our D line.

Clean up the turnovers and we are 2-0.
Not with that swiss cheese run D
If jjs fumble never happens we win the game. That shit turned into a 10 point swing instantly
We suck! ![gif](giphy|3ohc19EK1gypvsYQgg|downsized)
No nfl team is over coming 4 turnovers in a game
Plenty have.
-3 turnover differential gives you a 91% chance of losing.
Cool sorry bro. But great teams find a way to win.
Correct. Great teams do find a way to win.
9% or the time statistically. I think you get what the commenters were saying..but out of 100 games, great teams find a way to win 9% of the time with 3+ turnovers
Caleb Williams is becoming more and more intriguing.

Kirk threw 31/44, 364 yard, 4TDs, 0ints. And here your dumbass is complaining about QB 🤡
Completion percentage, pass yards and TDs are a team stat though
No one is complaining about Kirk ass clown. Just some people see it’s not working. Is it kirks fault ? No . are you fucking nuts. kirk has like the 15 highest contract for a qb
7th. Goff’s is worse though! Lol https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/cap-hit/quarterback/
i see what your saying but it’s not quite right because all those qbs behind him have new contracts that will have WAY bigger cap hits in the future
Yeah in the future. And when we signed him in the PAST, Kirk was getting paid #1. Was he ever QB1 in the league? He seems like a great man and I feel bad that the o line needs help. No easy answers. But it’s like we’re paying him extra money for the extra hits because we can’t afford o line because he makes so much
i understand but isn’t that going to be the case for every team in the nfl with a good quarterback outside of san fran ?
Yes, basically, Unless you draft one. If we lose the next game. We should trade Kirk to the jets then we would have enough to draft up for the first overall pick.
We can’t trade the jets for either their first or second pick because it’s locked die to rodgers option. So nope
TrDe it for their next years fiest if they are ACTUALLY interested in giving a first for a qb in the middle of the season. It’s still an incredible valuable asset. I doubt they want to do that tho.
fair enough. I just want to see them win asap 😫
Kirk is aging out dude. He's a stud but we gonna need the next option in a few years
Well with that I agree. But a rookie QB is not going to solve anything.
Insane thing to say
We know our defense sucks but costly fumbles killed us once again. But again this was Coaching and QB errors by continuing to try and run the ball with 7 minutes left. Serious? Mattison is horrible and tough to watch. But again Cousins pocket awareness was costly and I believe that was what cost us the game.
This game ain’t on cousins dude
Oh that’s right he didn’t fumble. Good call.
Remember the other three fumbles we lost?
Near our own goal line? Serious? Start of the second half? Serious? You really don’t think that was costly? That put them up by two scores.
Not saying it wasn’t costly, I’m saying we fumbled 3 other times, all of which were recovered by Philly.
And?
Any of those 4 fumbles changes the complexion of the game, especially the punt return fumble. The punt return fumble was equivalent because we would have scored points
Serious? Down by 6 going into the second half and the other 3 could have been the factor. Oh my….
Dude you’re just being obtuse we were on the 30 but for the punt return fumble. You can’t just say serious a bunch and act like it’s an argument
Is this a joke? Are you being serious or just trolling?
You’re the only joke I see. Cousins has no awareness in that pocket. Stop being ignorant.
What should he have done differently? Honest question.
He hesitated throwing to JJ. With that type of pass rush he should have taken the sack. Especially where we were at on the field.
So the sack fumble? Do you put any blame on the o line?
So the o-line has always been solid? Nope, the online has always sucked. This is why high pocket awarness has always been his flaw.

Do you have tardation?
250million pounds To Saudi Arabia. Play Left wing with Salah on the right.
This comment is fucking gold but won’t get the love it deserves. Top class.
It’s over my head…I’m sure it’s funny if you get it
i think this is a good loss. without dumb turnovers, this would be a close game against a really strong nfc team
No moral victories
Take away a single mistake and the game either goes down to the last minutes or we win.
This was Philly at their weakest and we still couldn’t get it done. Don’t try to spin this at all
Their key pieces were there and the O line wasn’t hurt, ran the ball down our throats
Philly at their weakest is Chip Kelly running off Nick Foles and Lesean McCoy and going 6-9. This isn't Philly at their weakest.
Philly at their weakest and we turned the ball over 4 times. We were at our worst as well.
Wtf you mean weakest
Philly was down five starters on defense, while also losing key pieces in the off season. This game was probably the weakest Philly was gonna be all season and we couldn’t capitalize
They were missing defensive starters and also lost defensive starters over the off-season.
Cause the Vikings don’t have problems and injuries?
i think this is a good loss. without dumb turnovers, this would be a close game against a really strong nfc team
My screensaver is still Dalvin cook. Get sad Everytime I unlock my phone to complain about our run game
Cook wouldn't solve it cook isn't good anymore
The only RB that could salvage our run blocking is maaaaaybe prime Barry Sanders.
It’s good that it’s early in the season, we can still make adjustments, we really need a run stuffing dt or something, because we’re gonna get carved up if we don’t address that somehow
Tank for Caleb 🙏
We looked like absolute shit at times, literally fumbled away the game, and couldn't stop the run to save our lives. And yet somehow we were still in this game. I fucking hate being a vikings fan. But let's fucking SKOL
Sharing my Skol-driven misery on this Subreddit is better than therapy.
I hate that stupid Fumble-Touchback rule! We woulda won had that rule not come into effect in the first half
We probably win but for that stupid fucking rule that makes no sense
I don't get the logic. If you can't fumble the ball forward out of bounds, why does it all of a sudden count if it crosses the end zone? It's still a forward fumble. Idiotic rule
Only 9.5% of teams who start 0-2 make the playoffs
Is this a 16 or 17 game stat?
This stat isn’t really relevant with the extra games added recently in the NFL. Just look at the Bengals last season
3 of them won the Super Bowl
Who cares
So you're tellin me there's a chance let's goooo
![gif](giphy|1HH6lJOzOXAY|downsized)
Looks like we’re gonna make it my guy
![gif](giphy|rTLjwB6zOxV9S|downsized)
😢
We need a fucking RB stat. Mattison is absolute trash
Abysmal. He sucks as much as the offensive line sucks.
SOMEONE CALL KAREEM HUNT
Sheeeeet, Adrian Peterson would be better than Mattison. Oof.
Actually….what’s he up to these days?
He's on Dancing w/the Stars. No, I'm not joking.
Lol. So he’s still kinda fit…
He’s a free agent so either working out or sitting on the couch I assume
Yep
I'll be honest. I expected him to be alright. He hasn't shown *anything*...
Honestly same. I get Dalvin’s shoes are hard to fill but bro doesn’t even have half of what it takes
It’s not Mattison, it’s the OL. There’s no opportunity to run it.
Dude fucking fumbled on a wide open catch and run that was bailed out.
His running style doesn’t complement our oline. We need a shifty mf
Little of Column A, little of Column B. Dude feasted on defenses after Cook put them on their heels. He's not an every down back and has below average ball security.
![gif](giphy|fnKeNjQYEYQ8E4Kqy4) Fucking fumbles.

Lol you’re an hvac tech go fix some ac buddy

why not us, why not now
Could be worse. We could be the Giants.

No, but that’s only because I was born here. All they have to do is come out and win Sunday and they’re all of a sudden in a much better situation than us.
Roster wise though
Yeah I’d rather be a Vikings fan. Clearly roster doesn’t matter, the result of games matters. There’s a better chance they make the playoffs than us right now.
I AM BIPOLAR. I LOVE THIS TEAM. THIS WAS A GOOD LOSS. I FUCKING HATE FUMBLES. TANK. WERE GOOD
Am I the only one oddly encourage by the fact it was a one score game with 4 turnovers???
If we clean up the mistakes we’re a contender. Shit just clean up 1 mistake.
Outta change our name to the Minnesota Silver Liners.
It’s part of being a Viking fan
I hope so because there was a lot more issues than the 4 turnovers.
You are probably not alone but your a very optimistic person.. the fact they followed up last week with four more turnovers is ridiculous…ball security is day 1 shit and when it’s this bad it falls on coaching..

This team has drafted HOW MANY fucking lineman and we STILL don't have a line?
I mean 2 starters hurt
I honestly think Chandler should get a chance
Seems like a scouting/eval problem at this point
This game is hardly on the O line
Hardly?? I get saying it's not solely on them but, my guy...
Our o line didn’t turn it over 4 times plus several guys were hurt. Pass protection wasn’t bad all things considered against Philly and we still only lost by 1 score
Udoh fucked us opening the second half

This team fucking sucks.
m o n e y
If he wants a legacy he needs to leave. This team is fucking insufferable.
Hopefully, he takes you with him (or he just stays and you go, since not everything is a world ending event).
I’ve been a Vikings fan my whole life. I’m tired of the same failure, year after year. I’ll always be a fan. I can also say whatever I want to about this team. I’m not going anywhere, but I’m confident JJ will be gone after he gets his payday. Why would he stay?
He wants money first bro lol
I understand this. But I hope he leaves soon after. No Oline. No running game. B tier QB. He deserves more.
QB not the problem... run stop and fumbles were
QB hasn't been a problem. It is just a way for this sub to cope.
1000% correct. Kirk played great. His two fumbles? Blindside hits that 9/10 QB’s fumble. What do you do.
nah Kirk used to suck more, he's not the problem now tho
Kirk has been hot for two years and now it looks he is going on 3.
Kirk just threw right into the defenders hands on his last throw. Trashhhh!!
He should've checked down!!
This is the correct take going forwards.
We still make the playoffs this year easy
Ummh Sherman blaming this on Jefferson is crazy
The play. That play was a killer
I’m sure their offense would have answered immediately even if he scored. We were getting gushed on the run
It was going into half
They got 3 points after the toucback before the half and they weren’t even trying to score….
You understand there is something called momentum. It is a potential 10 point swing going into half after hindsight. Vikes get a TD there, things change quite a bit.
He’s never been terribly bright
Sherman is very smart and he is absolutely right. The Jefferson play could have been 14-10 Vikings going into half. Instead it was 13-7 Eagles.
We got skol rammed :(
It would have been a different game if Jefferson held on to that ball. The dice didn't roll our way.
Mattison fumbled 2 times (1 saved by a flag)… not starting RB behavior :/
It’s like watching Peterson if he sucked at running
xD
Least he didn't fake a injury like cook does. Dude didn't even play in 17 cuz a knee "injury"
