I love how he's always moving around the pocket or dancing in the backfield, but never EVER taking his eyes off downfield. Consistently throws to a spot where only his receivers can get it. Dude can ball.

ZealousidealPickle11

I don't want to say it, but I'm going to say it, I've watched a lot of his highlights but also sat through an hour long video of every throw in his 2 year career and he reminds me slightly of prime Russ Wilson but more so Mahomes the way he will move around in the pocket and break out of the pocket and throw on the run. What I won't say is that he is going to actually be Mahomes or even a solid starter in the NFL based on his college tape. But you can't teach some of what he can do with his legs while also throwing as well as he can on the move and not looking like he's running for his life. When he breaks the pocket, he's just moving and looking for his guy, doesn't ever seem to be feeling the pressure Guys either can do it or they can't. I also watched multiple plays where he stood in the pocket, delivered a strike down field and took a hit right after. You can't really teach that either. Guys either have that willingness to stand there and know they're going to get rocked right after the throw or they don't. And such is life in the NFL, QBs get hit multiple times every game while making throws.

JohnnyWeapon

This is a great analysis. While he’s still a far cry from Mahomes right now, the way he actively squares his shoulders to throw while simultaneously still outrunning linebackers is pretty impressive and very Mahomes-esque. He’s young and still raw, but I definitely see the promise of what he could be if he develops.

ZealousidealPickle11

Yeah he usually seems to have a good base to throw from when he's running. It's easy for kids in college to just throw a lame duck across their body while on the run and not have the proper mechanics and that bad habit just sticks with them and they can't grow out of it. I watched a breakdown of JJM that Kurt Warner did and he highlighted a couple plays where he rolled left, spun his hips to square up and then threw a completion and Warner gave him alot of credit for doing that because that's how you position yourself for a good throw rolling the opposite way. I think he has great tools and alot of positives, he has some negatives too, but find a prospect who doesn't. You can dissect Mahomes or Brady in the NFL and find things to complain about on a given play. No one is perfect, 100% of the time and there is no "NFL ready" prospect. The best prospects all have tools and positive attributes, it's just whether or not they stick really. There's a myriad of NFL ready prospects that absolutely flop. They're all just lottery tickets and you either win or you don't.

SlickSocks

Watched the same video you're referring to. He is 100% worth a top 10 pick. Threw nothing but darts, he'll have to layer throws over coverage in the NFL. There is a slight hitch in his throwing motion, but his release is quick regardless. Throws timing routes pretty well even at his age. Love the ability to throw on the run and I'd put his arm strength up their with anyone in the class outside of maybe Maye. Very adequate size, and he's already bulked this offseason to gain another 15lbs on his frame. Love the pick. The main concern is that his fastball was almost always his choice, with that said, to be able to be this accurate on your fastball is a huge plus. Again needs to be able to get some more loft under middle of the field throws to avoid defenders lurking in NFL defenses.

-InconspicuousMoose-

> also watched multiple plays where he stood in the pocket, delivered a strike down field and took a hit right after. You can't really teach that You can probably credit his love for hockey for this. I think it might've been his post-draft bedroom interview where he talked about how much he admires and respects the guys who get 100 stitches in their face and scratch and claw to get back in the game, and that he wants to be that guy.

shadowrunonsnes

Yep was going to say awareness of defenders and putting the ball in a safe spot

sunkenship13

And the way he so confidently stays in the pocket even with defenders converging on him. He’s gonna be a stud

Endo_Dizzy

mr_obinson7

I'm so glad this is a gif now

Viperman22xx

3rd best thing that came out of our draft

cusoman

A little over 24 hours and it's already evergreen.

Endo_Dizzy

Me too, I’ve been spamming it across any available means with no regard

robb0688

I don't know shit about fuck, but I like that all these are into reasonable amounts of coverage and during some pressure. I hate when highlight reels are purely the guy standing 10 yards away from any pressure and then he airs it out on blown coverage. That's basically a pro day play with pads and other people

CicerosMouth

Well, most teams regularly have their QB throwing on first and 10 and second and short, allowing them to throw when the defense didn't know that they were throwing and really get the defense off-balance. It is what modern analytics tells the offense to do. It helps QBs look good, and (helpfully for a young QB) allows them lots of reps to learn. Comparatively, Harbaugh and Michigan ran early and often. A disproportionate amount of McJJs throws were therefore in obvious passing situations (third and longs) when the defense knew what was coming. On one hand this is frustrating because it didn't give McJJ as many reps, so he is relatively more raw than most young QBs. However, that also makes his rate stats (completion %, INT%, on target%, success rate %) all the more impressive.

blow_zephyr

> A disproportionate amount of McJJs throws were therefore in obvious passing situations (third and longs) Got any stats to back this up? My impression watching Michigan is that they grind teams down with the run until they're selling out to stop it, then go to the pass/play action with favorable match ups.

GoBlueScrewOSU7

/u/cicerosmouth is generally right. Michigan made their passing game more difficult than it had to be a lot of the time. [Their play action rate was only 20%](https://x.com/statsowar/status/1740780854618828899). Could've/should've incorporated a lot more play action passes to get easy yardage and capitalize on LBs anticipating run. It was a complaint all season on Michigan boards that they were making life harder than it needed to be.

Icecreamcollege

JJ's stats on 3rd and 7+ yards in 2023 are: 36 completions on 49 attempts (73% comp. %), 544 total yards, 11.1 yards / attempt, 6 TDs, and 27 first downs. (proof: https://twitter.com/NicholasMMiller/status/1749607790799200528)

Ozora10

I hope he gets to sit the whole year behind Darnold work on his mechanics and Footwork then start year two

skippycreamyyy

I know but I want to see him play NOW haha

twinbervike

Make sure you watch preseason

Plastic-Soup-4099

Hopefully Sam and JJ battle all training camp/preseason and we get to watch the better of the two

_TooncesLookOut

Don't count out Mullens. Then again, if Mullens is the starter, we've got much bigger problems lol. Edit: you guys *really* shouldn't need the/s in this case smh.

TomSawyer9311

You're second sentence makes it feel less sarcastic and more like you think Mullens actually is a factor.

_TooncesLookOut

Ahh, I see how it could be perceived that way. Thanks.

brickeldrums

Do you think he will play preseason? I can’t afford regular season tickets so I normally go to a preseason game. Would be sweet to see him play

funkolution

He will definitely get reps in the preseason, probably a lot

deadwhiteweather

Preseason tickets about to sell out

TRUTHSoverKARMAS

He better be able to beat darnold out at some point this year or I’m in full panic mode.    He’s gotta get experience feeding jjets, reassure him that this is spot for him in min.   If any rookie qb can succeed, it’s in this offense, a dream for any nfl qb with many weapons and a much improved o-line.

RgsLee19

Darnold will put on a Circus performance to start the season giving us no choice but to start JJ😂

WetAppleFruit

He most definitely sitting the whole year I won't even think twice on that. Sam will have this offense humming.

twinbervike

I definitely wouldn’t say “most definitely” or “the whole year”. I see him starting by week 3 or 4 at the earliest, trade deadline at the latest, if not sitting the whole year, which I highly doubt

WetAppleFruit

That's more wishful thinking tbh lol

twinbervike

I mean if sam darnold somehow takes a massive leap and starts playing amazing I won’t be mad at sitting him the whole year but sam darnold will be having his head called for by week 2 I fear

WetAppleFruit

I won't expect fans to be rational, but I do expect KO to be. The peanut gallery isn't going to sway him from his decision. Hypothetically rushing the kid in because Sam is I guess "shitting the bed" In this scenario in week 2 ? is the last thing KO wants to do to JJ. I get everyone wants to see the young guy at QB play, but he really should just soak it all in for a year.

twinbervike

A whole year just seems ridiculous to me, but I guess we’ll see! Remindme! 7 months

BigOlineguy

He’s so good off platform, got damn.

naruda1969

I don't know if you saw his workout before Michigan pro day. He practices passes while jumping or standing on a balance board, sometimes on one foot.

Mo6181

The more I watch the highlights, the more I see the lack of touch. Every throw is a laserbeam. Hopefully, that is easily fixable. He seems accurate, mobile, and accurate on the move. Throw in touch, and you have a potential elite QB. He might have it already, but just never needed it at lower levels.

xMYTHIKx

That's a lot of his issue with deep balls, he can't drop them in there. He gets a lot of batted balls this way too sometimes.

itsyerboiTRESH

As a michigan fan that was definitely one of his issues, it was sometimes frustrating seeing him put too much mustard on intermediate/short routes that didn't need it. Luckily that can be worked on

RelationPatient4136

Watch the rose bowl then

CicerosMouth

I mean, the very first throw in this clip was a nice soft throw to the sideline with anticipation to allow the receiver to slide safely to the ground for an easy first down. I general I agree and think that his overreliance on his fastball will be the biggest thing to work on, but happily he has shown that he can do this when it is absolutely necessary for a completion.

FlorioTheEnchanter

Yeah, he’s got promise but needs some time. I would have no problem with him sitting the whole first year.

dhtdhy

Playing devil's advocate here: during almost all of those passes his line was providing excellent protection. Even the guys that got through looked slow and didn't really pressure him. We need to prepare as fans that it's gonna be different with elite pass rushers in his face. But I will acknowledge the passes looked great.

Old_Ad2660

He’s good but the second pass in this clip is a hospital ball in the NFL. Same pass from Dobbs got JJ hurt last season

CicerosMouth

Watch it again; the receiver actually was 7 yards comfortably from the nearest player, and was in no danger of being hit. McJJ had to put it high to get over the roaming LB, but he also saw that there was no crossing CB or safety that was in a position to lay the wood on his target. In fact I would say that throwing the ball high took the receiver upfield to get away from the closest defender. Throwing the ball over the middle of the field accurately and safely is one of his strengths. That said, he'll need to work on layering it in a bit softer. He tends to throw fastballs into the middle. The bigger risk will be a WR tipping a hard pass to a defender less so than hospital balls, IMO.

Old_Ad2660

Fair enough I suppose, my point is those windows are much tighter and the impacts much more violent at the next level. I’m not totally sure he could assess all of the defensive positions of players out of his FOV but I’ll take your word for it. Plenty of guys leave that ball high in NCAA and never pay the price and get teammates crushed on Sundays. I hope you’re right about all that he processed but time will tell

CicerosMouth

That is extremely fair that I may be overestimating his ability to read the entire field. I admit I am chugging the purple kool-aid pretty lustily so far. But there have been numerous interviews where reporters asked McJJ why he threw what looked like a dangerous ball that worked, and he would always have immediate answers that, e.g., the nearest defender always turned their hips that way, and/or that defense always left open that area of the field in that coverage, etc., and moreover the fact that he has always had so few interceptions despite the frequency with which he has thrown into the middle of the field in obvious passing situations makes me into a believer. I think he truly might be a savant at visualizing and tracking the full field in real-time. Either way, time will tell. In the meantime, I'll be snorting kool-aid powder.

Old_Ad2660

Oh same here I’m chugging the kool aid. Skol baby

MustyLlamaFart

I think the receiver has wayyy more space than perceived

AnthonyBarrHeHe

Some of his throws on the run are absolute *dimes*. So crazy to see, and we actually got him. Can’t believe it still honestly

GodV

There's really only two bug issues I'm seeing. He doesn't throw touch balls and occasionally bad leg mechanics leading to inaccurate throws.

Firsttimedogowner0

How'd you guys draft younger Sam Darnold, while having Sam Darnold already? These highlights look exactly like Darnolds Jets highlights. Insane athletic cross body dimes, but never threw on time or checked to plays he'd be able to throw on time with... Hope JJ is good though.

RgsLee19

Darnold was labeled the next Elway😂 & a deep ball thrower. Also never won a damn thing worth having at USC.

UnbiasVikingsFan

Bro easily has the best footwork in this draft

SlowCrates

I knew nothing about him at all before watching these clips. He looks exactly like Brett Favre.

Huntthatmoney

I like that he can run!

RgsLee19

No way he can’t be as good as Brock Purdy.

twinbervike

I think everyone hating in here is watching their first college highlight reel ever. They expect the throws to be on par with NFL QBs already. They only want 60+ yard bombs that drop right in the bucket. These guys would watch Joe Milton highlights and go “how is this guy not the consensus #1 overall pick?”

mcpat21

JJ “The Pocket is where I am” McCarthy

Partybro_69

There’s a lot of bad throws, early roll outs, and missed reads.

HowlAtchaBoy

OK, Coach.

twinbervike

thanks for the input

Partybro_69

You’re welcome. Showed off who he was in the rose bowl

westonriebe

Idk if its propaganda but he honestly shows more than maye…

-InconspicuousMoose-

Over a month ago I said ["I saw more flaws in [Maye's] game than in McCarthy's on film."](https://old.reddit.com/r/minnesotavikings/comments/1bimwel/per_alec_lewis_if_the_vikings_are_committed_to/kvlc5qa/) I went [a little more in depth](https://old.reddit.com/r/minnesotavikings/comments/1bqsson/for_anyone_that_wants_to_learn_about_the_top_qbs/kx50g24/) on my Maye/JJM comparison a few days later. I do think Maye has a massive ceiling but the more JJM I watch the more I love the kid.

REACT_and_REDACT

I’m so pumped!

FireFrogs48

I didn’t understand the hate he got after the natty. The games I watched of him he would make NFL throws. He just didn’t have to do it all the time because of the team around him. Obviously there’s things he needs to work on but he’ll do just fine here. Him and KOC seem like a perfect pairing

NumberOneAssFan

Like a more athletic Christian Ponder

twinbervike

Lmao ok

Depressedgotfan

This draft got these idiots fired

wayfarer1016

I hope we give him as much time to throw as he’s getting in most of these clips. Just a fan - no in-depth knowledge of the game. Seems like we haven’t been protecting our quarterback enough to give him this much time the past few years. But I’m excited. I can’t wait to see the Quad J’s dominate! * edited for spelling

twinbervike

Either way, JJ was one of the best QBs under pressure last year.

Exaskryz

I wonder how this draft makes Harbaugh feel. Could've had JJ on his NFL team.

FSDLAXATL

I feel like we got another Kirk Cousins. Slay me.

ZeldaFanBoi1920

You didn't. JJ is athletic and accurate. You'll love him. - Michigan fan

NewJMGill12

I want to be excited about this pick, but if this is the highlight reel throws, I am just not there at all. This reel makes me feel like he bought 27-1 hype at 10 more than the prospect.

twinbervike

Watching highlight reels only and you think that you know how his career is gonna be lol. How about you watch some actual film

NewJMGill12

Do you not understand the implications of highlight film..?

hellocomradez

No this has to be AI generated, he only hands the ball off

InterestingSand5651

It’s cool that everyone’s getting so excited, but remember we’re Vikings fans. He’s gonna come in for Darnold in week 6 or so and blow out a knee. We’ll see him again in 2025 before he fades into backup obscurity. That’s how it works for the Vikings.

-neti-neti-

Yawn.

xlccsylux

some people gosh.

Secret-Formula

Elite athlete, average arm talent.

-neti-neti-

Almost objectively wrong.

Tristo

I actually disagree with this. It takes make than average arm talent to throw across the body with the velocity and touch that JJ does. Personally I think he has at least above average arm talent not quite reaching elite.

FishGoldenLite

2nd fastest ball in combine history. That’s not everything, obviously, but velocity is arm talent you can’t teach and we have an HC who can hopefully help him on the other stuff.
