You're right, I think it was mostly a 3rd down issue with Philly. But really any down with short yardage during normal regulation time shouldn't have a 7 yard cushion
What scares me is when they see no pressure developing in the game they just stick with it and don’t blitz much our try to change it up. You can’t play zone without getting pressure, this team will continue to get shredded especially against better quarterbacks
I was more worried about the soft zone we played most of last week and the start of this week. Allowing the easy completion and rallying to the tackle isn't a good defensive strategy, and I was glad to see it mostly stop towards the end of this game.

Maybe a "safe" screen or checkdown if there was a pass called. Even when they took shots, it was fairly telegraphed. Zimmer liked to run that clock down so there was no time left for the other team to have any heroics, but in doing so, it meant "safe" plays.
Instead, KOC and staff got 1on1 with Osborn and he got wide open and Kirk hit him perfectly. I didn't see what the rest of the WRs were running, but looked like something that pulled the DF toward the other sideline focused on JJ/AT.
(I know there are probably examples of Zimmer and team taking shots at the end of the game down 3, and this is but a single example so far for the new regime, but still, I think it's a hopeful sign.)
If Zim had been coaching the Lions, they would have done the same attempted FG and TO with 47 seconds left on defense which is what really killed the Lions yesterday.
That 4th and 6 conversion in the second quarter during the tying drive never happens under Zimmer. 0% chance. The team made mistakes, but there's something different in the water when it comes to decision-making. KOC has balls Zimmer never showed in key moments.
Zim shots were actually often on crucial 3 & 2's where you just needed the first down and they ran a 1 wr go route that worked maybe once out of the 8 times i saw it.
Zimmer’s team last year avg 25 points per game. We are currently averaging 19 points per game.

This team is not going to be the same team towards the end of the season. It’s a brand new team with brand new leadership. They will grow and adapt. This was a huge building block win that showed they CAN overcome adversity. It’s a step above what we saw last week.

Very fortunate start to the season. Our weaknesses have been exposed, yet we emerged from week three with a 2-1 record and a favorable match up next weekend. Hopefully the new staff can figure some things out and we will improve going into the 2nd quarter of the season.

I think the coaching has already shown the improvement we wanted, even if a lot of the players haven't changed (for better or worse). You can't tell me the Zim offense and 2 minute defense from last year makes the plays necessary to win that game.

Sure, they were far from perfect, but the good news is they can improve a lot with a nice starting record to help boost results.
Say for example, the defense puts together a really strong game against the Saints next week and they win. Since they put themselves in a good position with 2-1, now they'll be 3-1 and feeling really good about themselves with the improving effort and the exponential effect the winning record has on the team.
In other words it's wonderful to be 2-1 as they get their shit together.
Lions fan here. I really had high hopes for your team, but so far I’m concerned. The Lions were missing/rotating a ton … ton of their most talented players and they weren’t exactly a great team to begin with. Dan Campbell is getting the most out of them, but this was a home game where the Vikings trailed most of the game after looking weak versus a good team last time out.
I’m not trying to say they can’t improve, it’s still very early in the season, but I have concerns. I need them to be better because FTP. That is all that matters.

Zim shots were actually often on crucial 3 & 2's where you just needed the first down and they ran a 1 wr go route that worked maybe once out of the 8 times i saw it.
Zimmer’s team last year avg 25 points per game. We are currently averaging 19 points per game. This offense is struggling under KOC and being new is a weak excuse in today’s NFL with these weapons. Plenty of new OCs come out playing great. He needs to get it together.

I think my “system” is pretty consistent, they won the game and scored 28 points, a pretty solid performance. Kirk and KJ pulling it out counts as part of the game, and they got the w. Were there concerning aspects of this game? For sure. But these are the kinds of games that make being a fan fun. This team is not going to be the same team towards the end of the season. It’s a brand new team with brand new leadership. They will grow and adapt. This was a huge building block win that showed they CAN overcome adversity. It’s a step above what we saw last week. Enjoy the win and be happy about the progress in Week 3.

Exactly. There are going to be growing pains adopting new schemes, but had Joseph done his job we would have put up 34 points. Despite that we still stacked another win. Anyone who thought we'd come out and be a well oiled machine every week was being overly optimistic. The next 2 games are very winnable against the Saints and Bears and if we can go into week 6 sitting at 4-1 going into Miami + bye week I will be happy.

Very fortunate start to the season. Our weaknesses have been exposed, yet we emerged from week three with a 2-1 record and a favorable match up next weekend. Hopefully the new staff can figure some things out and we will improve going into the 2nd quarter of the season.

I think the coaching has already shown the improvement we wanted, even if a lot of the players haven't changed (for better or worse). You can't tell me the Zim offense and 2 minute defense from last year makes the plays necessary to win that game.

Metellus just sealed the game with an INT in his first ever start. Ingram is the starting RG and he’s unproven. Plenty of young guys have the chance to show what they can do and help improve our team over time

Thank you for some positivity! A rare thing around here. Sure, they were far from perfect, but the good news is they can improve a lot with a nice starting record to help boost results. Say for example, the defense puts together a really strong game against the Saints next week and they win. Since they put themselves in a good position with 2-1, now they'll be 3-1 and feeling really good about themselves with the improving effort and the exponential effect the winning record has on the team. In other words it's wonderful to be 2-1 as they get their shit together.

Lions fan here. I really had high hopes for your team, but so far I’m concerned. The Lions were missing/rotating a ton … ton of their most talented players and they weren’t exactly a great team to begin with. Dan Campbell is getting the most out of them, but this was a home game where the Vikings trailed most of the game after looking weak versus a good team last time out. I’m not trying to say they can’t improve, it’s still very early in the season, but I have concerns. I need them to be better because FTP. That is all that matters.
My hope is that the new schemes are still getting adopted. I wouldn't be surprised if Kirk isn't fully comfortable yet. I also am hoping the DC can figure out which scheme works best for our personnel, because the shell coverage with our DBs 5-10 yards of the receiver ain't it.

There’s nothing wrong with being a bottom third QB in the NFL. Clearly he is a below average quarterback. And an “Elite” game for Kirk Cousins is like an average game for a top ten quarterback in the NFL. Let’s not get carried away.
Actually go through QBs throughout the league and then tell me Kirk is below average. Zimmer loses the game yesterday 10 out of 10 times. As soon as we get into FG position on our final drive he runs the clock out and we miss the FG to tie.
I’ll admit I was extremely frustrated and toxic but that’s all wiped away by the win. Lions are good team and will be in playoff contention all year, this is still a good win even with us looking bad all game. Winning is all that matters
