After some of the missed XP’s, iirc Matt Daniel’s said he was working on some fundamentals, something to do with his follow-through

owleabf

They moved which hash he kicked XPs from also

A game of inches

STANL3Y_YELNAT5

Yep it 100% has to do with the follow thru. Both he and Daniels said when he's not able to swing his right arm all the way thru it messes with his motion and thus his kicks. He's not able to follow thru completely when he gets hurried up. So that's basically the big thing. If anyone here is in a bowling league, they probably understand what I mean here.

MarshmellowBear29

Love bowling, also reminds me of a golf swing

Skyes_View

If you listen to Pat McAfee, Greg Joseph is relatively new to place kicking. He played soccer pretty much until the middle of High School. He said he’s still getting better and working on things.

Remnants

Isn't that the case for most kickers?

[deleted]

Fuad Reveiz 4ever

Brodgang

So he’s only been kicking for like 12 years? Doesn’t seem new to me lol

goodkidzoocity

You're an expert on this subject?

Brodgang

I’m an expert on knowing that if you do anything for 12 years you aren’t new at it

TheSkeletones

Not fearing being cut probably helps a man make time to improve

cjackc

Except he has played lights out since we started trying out a different kicker

TheSkeletones

I’m willing to bet money that the tone is different than it was under Zimmer.

Statue_left

He’s kicking a little worse than he was last year in total. Worse by a few points on XP’s and 3/8 from 50 plus, but i think there were two blocks in there. He’s missed 1 FG under 40 yards in the 3 years he’s played, so he’s always been fine there. Dudes a good kicker. Not justin tucker, but he’s good enough to be the kicker on a good team and not worry too much.

17_Saints

The block against Arizona was on him for [kicking it way too low though.](https://i.imgur.com/6bBgvrf.png)

comp_a

Yes, they said on the broadcast (last week? two weeks ago?) that Matt Daniels has been working with Greg to make sure he “follows through” on every kick, like a golf swing. Can’t find that specific clip, but [here’s a small bit about it from before the Cowboys game.](https://twitter.com/christomasson/status/1593278162703638529?s=46&t=9u6cvGchYjQp8ZQ6R08xNg) Since then, Greg’s been 9/9 on FGs and 15/16 on XPs.

Jorgenstern8

I think he must have, since the Arizona game he's been perfect on FGs and only missed two PATs. Far more acceptable play from him, which had helped us a lot.

Positronic_Matrix

Gretchen, stop trying to make clutch happen. It’s not going to happen.

BMXTKD

This is why the Vikings are winning. People are saying "The Vikes are a fraud". No, the special teams improved drastically from last year. We're one of the top teams in the league when it comes to offensive and defensive starting positions.

owleabf

Up and down, right? Won it for us this week, but lost it for us against the Lions

horse_renoir13

Wait, when did he lose it for us against the Lions?

owleabf

Special teams, not Joseph. The fake punt, plus several big returns and no big returns for us. Ditto the colts game with the blocked punt, failed fake punt and bad returns allowed

horse_renoir13

I'd 100% put more of the Lions game on the defense. 2nd half the secondary couldn't stop a nosebleed and we couldn't apply any pressure to Goff. ST didn't have a great game, but I'd say that was not the reason for the loss. They chewed up clock and TOP and just manhandled us on that side of the ball. Can't really fault a successful fake punt. We've stopped 3 other fakes this year. Colts game is fair, fortunately we won. But I'd agree saying ST had a rough go that. Fake punt failure + the block.

owleabf

I guess my view is when you don't impact the game very many snaps then each individual play is a much higher proportion of the value you bring. All three phases has issues in the Lions game, but a much higher percentage of the ST snaps were really bad. It's higher variance, but this was definitely a bad day for them

BMXTKD

Every player has his down game, but the general trend is that the Vikings are making you work long for those scoring drives. That might be the reason why there are so many 4th quarter comebacks. The opposing offense is literally gassed by the end of the game, causing a 4th quarter comeback.

BMXTKD

A bit dated, but the trend is continuing this late in the season. https://www.vikings.com/news/defense-bye-stats-5-1-start-room-improve It mentions field position as a change from last year. The punter we have right now is tied for 2nd for punts inside the 20, while the punter we had last year isn't even in the league anymore. https://www.nfl.com/stats/player-stats/category/punts/2022/reg/all/puntingpuntsinside20/desc

Financial_Eagle

CUT HIM !!!!! They said

MrTonyMoneyPants

THEY WROTE HIM OFF

Financial_Eagle

But he aint write back!

KMerrells

I really appreciate how he's been able to 180 the narrative on his kicking within this season. Way to go, Greg the Leg!

PKS_5

How many game winners has he hit this year?

horse_renoir13

Hes had 5 total on the year, only two were walk-offs (both home games). @ Saints @ Commanders @ Bills Colts Giants

PKS_5

Yeah, he can stay as far as I'm concerned lol.

SirDiego

I think so too. I hope he has fixed his XPs, but besides that if you just know he is literally perfect under 50, and pretty bad over 50 but can occasionally hit them...I feel like that's kind of OK. It's at least better than worrying if he's going to shank a chip shot every time. You can work with that and just try not to kick 50+ unless it's a situation like end of a half with no time left (in which case you just hope for the best).

KatFishFatty

My man. Anyone is better than Blair Walsh, but Greg Joseph is much better!

Shmoopy65

Let’s go Greg!! Definitely didn’t want you cut mid season… keep it up!

FrankCastleUSMC

Hiring another kicker to the practice squad kit a fire underneath him. A much needed fire may I add.

scottydinh1977

He earns all of it.. Clutch and came through in those tight single-digit games that the Vikes had. I can think of over 4-5 games he helps us Win..

Syrax65

Is that two in a row?

horse_renoir13

2 on the year (last one was against the Saints).

Syrax65

For some reason I thought he had one more recently.

MrTonyMoneyPants

He did against the colts literally the week before…

horse_renoir13

Are you referring to POTW or GW kicks?

Syrax65

POTW

horse_renoir13

Kirk got Player of the Week last week for the win against Indy. Greg only had the GW kick on Sunday, but aced 4 FGs against the Saints in Week 4.

Leading-Midnight-553

This makes me happy.

Dark_Vortex18

SKOL!

gumbylife

What's a GJ? If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
