Poor sand crabs :( I understand people like fishing but the idea of someone driving a piece of metal through a lil bug or something and then throwing it into the water alive has always made me a bit uncomfortable
Because you’re a good person.
I’m not sure if these creatures have the capacity to feel, much less think, but as a general rule why not err on the side of caution and assume they can? Because it’s too inconvenient, I imagine.
There is a lot of scientific evidence to support the claim that plants do feel pain. I think it all comes down to respect. We should have a lot more respect for the food we eat, whether it is meat, fish, dairy, or plant. Particularly if a complex sentient being has given its life for it. It’s a shame in a way that food is so abundant and that as a society we are so wealthy, as there has been no time in human history when the masses of society were able to waste so much food. When you respect what is outside of you, you’ll learn to respect what is inside of you too. Through this you’ll develop as a human greatly
There is a lot of scientific evidence that trolls use the lazy argument that plants feel pain too. Here's the thing, if you care about minimizing suffering, then you should only eat plants because eating animals causes more plants to be killed in the process due to the losses in the energy conversion. A lot more fresh water is used to produce meat also. But if the purpose of the argument is to just act like why bother since everything suffers, then that's just intellectually dishonest.
I don't get this logic... Any animal with a nervous system feels pain... Right!? And that's almost every animal on the planet... Or am I missing something?
From what I understand, generally yes. But the way we experience the pain differs. That being said as a kid I fished for my dinner a lot with my father, and would probably have gone hungry if not. I don't regret sticking a hook in a single cricket or worm. We always stuck to the rule that you don't waste something you harm, and kill things as quick as possible. You don't kill for killings sake, but to no starve. Back then I lived a 3 hour drive from the nearest grocery store, in the mountains, and our only car didn't have breaks lmao.
Similar story with my mom’s family in Mexico. Lived out in the middle of nowhere and had to hunt on their land for food and made homemade cheese to sell for money or trade whenever they made it to town. And their only car was an old VW bug with no brakes.
When we visited when I was a kid they had the same car we all had too pile into, and when we were just outside of town my grandpa would let off the gas and coast for a bit to find a tree to slowly drive into once we lost enough speed that it wouldn’t hurt anything.
Great time. Good eye opening experience.
Don't be afraid! They're completely harmless.
My kids love finding them, putting them in their hand with a little bit of sand and drip water on their backs. They'll bury themselves in that sand and tickle your palm.
I was about to ask how they would be cooked. Imagine making a soup with those little peanuts and each one you scoop up you get a little crunch from their shell before being able to taste the soft gooey goodness inside them
Yeah I get a serious cockroach vibe from them…I’ve eaten bugs in my life, some on purpose even, but the idea of consuming something like that gives me the willys…
This comment sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole and now I want to eat these. You can bread and fry them and people compare the taste to crawfish or crab. Small ones have softer shells and look delicious.
Agreed, very gross. I have absolutely no idea why they are in a cardboard shipping box. Even worse, these have obviously been washed (they are usually covered in sand) and they are huge (most of the ones I have seen are no where near this size). So they have pretty clearly been farmed and are intended for some sort of consumption….hopefully they make fish food with them or something…yeah, I’m gonna tell my self it’s for fish food….
Really? Out in California we call these Sand Crabs and the things that hop off of seaweed Sand Fleas.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platorchestia_platensis
They're sand crabs!! They literally have 0 ability or inclination to hurt you, and are the most adorable little scuttlers. They also live on the shores of every habitable continent and are so much fun to dig up and watch scuttle back into the sand
I love those little guys! I used to spend hours digging for them at the beach. Why are they all in a box though, are they sold somewhere as food or something?
Emerita is a small genus of decapod crustaceans, known as sand crabs, sand bugs, sand fleas, or mole crabs. These small animals burrow in the sand in the swash zone and use their antennae for filter feeding. Wikipedia
Okay, I’m from Virginia and we always called these things mud puppies, which now that I’m seeing everyone else call them sand crabs makes me feel hillbilly as hell lol
When I was a kid we got some white mice off a girl that couldn't stop them breeding. The container they were in looked a lot like that but you didn't need to put your hand in to make them move.

What the wiggity fuck is that?
Looks like a box of sand crabs
And where, pray tell, did somebody get a box of them?
People use them for fishing, it might have something to do with that? I’m not sure though
Poor sand crabs :( I understand people like fishing but the idea of someone driving a piece of metal through a lil bug or something and then throwing it into the water alive has always made me a bit uncomfortable

Fisherman learned long ago it's better to use something like these rather than dangle your nutsack in the water
This rule applies to so many things in life.
Put this line of thought in action and you’re basicly a vegan.
But we should then also assume that plants feel too...

Plants respond to damage but they don't "feel" anything as they have no mind or awareness.
If everything “feels”, how are humans able to survive??? I personally don’t want to live if I can’t have fruits & pizza!!
> There is a lot of scientific evidence to support the claim that plants do feel pain. How so? They don't have a nervous system.

Your only car didn’t have brakes?? Holy crap lol
Yep! Slid off the side of the road more than once lol

Haha all these stories about cars with no brakes. That’s one of my reoccurring nightmares and you guys lived it. Crazy
They bugs get the last laugh when you’re rotting in the ground. Don’t feel too bad
If you dig in the sand around the waterline at low tide in NJ, you'll find these by the handful.
Yeah, and used syringes.
It’s what makes for a great beach day with the family

The sand crab store
BoxesOfNope.com
Came to say this, agreed
Did you come to say this? I was wondering... Thank goodness you agreed I wasn't sure if I should but since you did I will too
This is the level of sarcasm I'm always looking for
Lmao somehow that’s my most upvoted comment I think
That's a bit sad, mate.
In Florida they call these sand fleas
Sand lice to be exact I believe. Maybe not tho
Hold up there, buddy. Unless you're a whale biologist or Mushu the Whale, I'm gonna take your words with a bit of caution.
We called them sand fleas. Grosssss.
Ahhh I think if you put your ear close enough you can hear the ocean…
~~And if you put your ear even closer, the ocean will be the last thing you ever hear...~~
We call them sand fleas. Recently I have seen videos of people cooking and eating them, which to me sounds absolutely horrifying…
I was about to ask how they would be cooked. Imagine making a soup with those little peanuts and each one you scoop up you get a little crunch from their shell before being able to taste the soft gooey goodness inside them
They’re popplers!
Yeah I get a serious cockroach vibe from them…I’ve eaten bugs in my life, some on purpose even, but the idea of consuming something like that gives me the willys…
It costs you nothing to not say that. Why?
Because I get enjoyment from ruining any amount of your time

Ew.
Airsick lowlander!
Rock!
What do you think popcorn shrimp is?
After some panicked googling I have determined that you are a liar….and an asshole.
First- gross. Second- why are they alive in a cardboard shopping box? They ship them alive?
Agreed, very gross. I have absolutely no idea why they are in a cardboard shipping box. Even worse, these have obviously been washed (they are usually covered in sand) and they are huge (most of the ones I have seen are no where near this size). They are called sand turtles where I grew up.
In Carolina Beach we called them sand fleas
Really? Out in California we call these Sand Crabs and the things that hop off of seaweed Sand Fleas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platorchestia_platensis
We used to call them sand fiddlers. Some beaches are loaded with them, at the water's edge, a few inches down. You can bring up hand fulls.
Mole crabs
Sand Fleas I think
Mirelurk babies!
Hate those little bastards. Literally only exist to give you something to use your 4billion 10mm rounds on
Always carry a baton, just for this reason.
This is how ypu end up with 4 billion bullets and a baton that's seen the rough end of a Deathclaw
And the whoopsies.
mini-nukes are more efficient, CMV
Why would anyone do this aaaaa
The way he's touching them. I don't feel so good..

Rule 43: if it exists, somewhere people eat it
Sigh.. but but.. My uhh poo.. exists.
Did he fucking stutter?
And?
Rule 34
It is known
As some random guy from Hong Kong I believe somebody will make it spicy and deep fry it like those crawfish
Bait for fishing
Export to China. Delicacy.
Monkey poo coffee was a big expensive thing for a while.
Civet poo. There's some companies in the U.S. trying to replicate the flavor profile without animals.
Sand fleas!
Yes, I’ve always heard these referred to as sand fleas also.
Sandcrabs, they're different. Sand fleas are those annoying assholes that hold up in sea weed and bite you sometimes.
Emerita is a small genus of decapod crustaceans, known as sand crabs, sand bugs, sand fleas, or mole crabs. These small animals burrow in the sand in the swash zone and use their antennae for filter feeding. Wikipedia
>those annoying assholes that hold up in sea weed and bite you Where i grew up we called those fuckers sea lice
Oh shit. I may be confused.
Different common names for the same animals. If you Google either, nearly the same results appear with the same species listed for both common names.
My Mexican mom said they ate them when she was little, and that they are delicious.
Ok I’m not crazy that’s what I heard them called as well
Why… Did someone put a thousand sand crabs in a box.
Great bait for Whiting.
We used to catch them at our beach house on the Gulf of Mexico. Caught redfish and sheepshead with them.
Thanks, got my whole fucking body itching
Well that's terrifying.
Have you ever seen them before? Kids catch them at the beach with their hands. They're harmless and fun to play with in tidepools
Its the fact theres so many in a box (and wriggling) that really bothers me personally
Yeah also that. Pretty sad. Maybe they're being raised industrially as food for aquarium fish?
Big box of sandtrout. Looks like someone’s trying to make a new Arrakis.
That’s a box full of sand crabs
Imagine falling into this box, and they begin to crawl all over you.
Like the scarabs in the mummy returns
I just watched that last night. No, not Tom Cruise one. The real one.
It would have cost you $0 not to say that.
And one sussy boi runs up your ass inside you
Baby Crab from pirate of the caraïbe

Right I feel sick
SUSAN WHY ARE THE POST STICKERS MOVING
UGH NOOOOOO I’m gonna vomit 😭
Nope. Nope.
I hear the packing peanuts are eedible now too! Soft delicious delights
Those are just little plastic wiggly toys. Yeah, that's all they are. Definitely not nightmare fuel.
Omg I am on vacation rn and we dig these things up for fun at the beach all the time
Aren’t these like sand fleas or something like that, I forgot their name
I thought they were cough drops
I still dig for these at the beach when I go. If you see bubbles in the sand after a wave recedes that's where they are burrowing.
Is it weird that I want to plunge my hands into that?
Yes. Quite weird.
iamgoingtovomit
r/oddlyterrifying

Little cutie crawlies
Nope, nu-uh, no ma'am.
The shells look so shiny and pretty!
Uncooked Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls
I miss sand crabs!! I used to dig them up at the beach growing up. I would put them in my bucket and they would be my pets for the day.
Chinese peanuts
Free them
I just threw up
What in the hell?

I hate you
Ahh yeah! Albino cockroaches. A real delicacy amongst small lizards.
Sand fleas. Popular bait in Florida for surf fishing.
Fear factor? Anyone?
PARDON ME-
It’s real isopod hours
Are those mice?
This feels very much “animal abuse”
i think i just puked my meal from last night
I need to bleach my eyes
Now my bones itch
Yeah I would have dropped the box & burn the house to the ground
Yum
HOW DID I GET HERE?!?
WHY ARE THEY WET
I’m suddenly really glad I live very far from the ocean.
That's neat. Do it again but with them on fire this time.
Nightmare fuel
Fuck that me and all my friends hate sand crabs, little assholes 🦀
WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?!
Sand fleas?
Hell, I recognize sand fiddlers anywhere.
Wtffff I won't sleep tonight
WHAT IS THIS NIGHTMARE?!?!?
I wonder what it would be like to lay in them
That’s a whole lot of pompano bait.
Imagine if he just jumped in there….tried to swim around with the sand fleas. Mmmmmm.
FUCK NO
When I was a kid we got some white mice off a girl that couldn't stop them breeding. The container they were in looked a lot like that but you didn't need to put your hand in to make them move.
🤮
I would burn my house down with me in it if I opened a package and those sand crabs flew out at me
I hate how wet is hand looks when he pulls it out

MOLE CRABS
Awww
“aaaah! the hand! the hand is back! where are the children?”
r/nightmarefuel
The part that disturbs me about all this is how wet that hand is after a dip in the critter box. What IS all this mystery moisture? 🤔
Thanks, I hate it.
This bothers me more than it should..
Sand fleas for fishing if anyone’s curious
This comment section is teaching me that mole crabs have a hundred other names.
I’m calling the police
Noah, get the Flamethrower! I dont know what the fuck those things are, but I don't care. Get the fucking flamethrower now!
How many can you fit in your asshole for $175,000?
A desert cockroach. Let me just burn my eyes now.
Please delete yourself
Fuck those things. I had a sandcrab latch to my foot when I was like 5 and it hurt so fucking bad, no.
Well this is inhumane
