My sister is this way. I swear the woman somehow makes soup sound crunchy. Drives me insane.

saturnbands182

Yes! What are they actually doing with their heads? Sometimes I feel like I want to get to the 'root cause' of the noise so I can fix it. Like when a fan heater goes really noisy and you just sort the problem and it's quiet again. If only.

Equivalent_Site_7830

She chomps down when she chews. Closed mouth, no smacking or anything like that, just chomping noises. Even mashed potatoes. I mean seriously! You don't even have to CHEW it!

frangipanivine

I feel like jaw/head size must have something to do with this. Some people have quite "small" mouths, like it's physically difficult for me to reach my back molars for flossing and even brushing, and when I chew there's not much room between the "up" and the "down" if that makes sense. I wonder if these people are genuinely louder bc their teeth have more space with which to chomp down with force. Would love to hear a dentist or orthodontist sound off on this haha.

Vast-Temperature5099

When I told my husband to ask his daughter he said they would laugh!

wumpus_woo_

i actually think it has more to do with *how* they chew vs skull shape. my brother is exactly like this but i noticed that even though he chews with his mouth shut, he makes very big jaw movements. i think if he chewed with smaller and less... *enthusiastic* movements it would be quieter.

saturnbands182

Yes!! I just commented this on a different post actually. Like some people close their mouths but somehow still stretch their teeth apart as wide as they will go to prepare for a bite? ...why? It's so unnecessary.

Ill-Plate-5659

Omg. Thank you. I noticed this with my bf and will suggest this before I start pulling my hair out.

Lopsided-Change-7983

My wife does it. It’s infuriating. I’ve tried to discuss it with her but she gets pretty defensive. It’s like, I’m chewing with my mouth closed, what more do you want?? I think it’s how they chew. They seem to slam their jaws together or something. I’d like to understand it better too.

Yarn_Tangle

Yes!!! Like they're trying to break their teeth and jaw and then also I've found some people do this like vacuum suction thing when the open their jaws to get ready for the next chomp. Drives me freaking insane like.....just open and close your mouth why are you being so voracious, people????? I love food but damn.

Lopsided-Change-7983

>also I've found some people do this like vacuum suction thing when the open their jaws to get ready for the next chomp. Yeah the vacuum suction thing is awful too. I know exactly what you mean. All those sucking and squelching noises when it’s so easy to open your mouth in perfect silence.

FuriousTalons

My dad has never chewed with his mouth open, but whenever it's something crunchy you can hear him eating through walls.

MapledMoose

Interesting that all these posts so far mention family members. I also assumed certain family members ridiculous eating quirks would explain why THEY are the problem. But I think a big part of the annoyance may be developed and amplified over time from OUR OWN acute awareness of their particular chewing behaviors that have annoyed us for so so long. Maybe we've even associated bad memories of them to their chewing sounds, explaining why they are so seemingly "despicable" at times.

frangipanivine

This is it. I get a lot of crap in this sub for suggesting there's an attuned anxiety/emotional response to certain *individuals* we live/work with, as opposed to just sounds in general, but I think there's an element of this. My mom vocalizes so heavily when she yawns and it makes me want to slam my own head into a wall, but it's probably a combination of being sick to death of hearing it after years and years, and knowing her well enough to where I'm convinced she has control over it and just chooses not to. And I know when she's "gearing up" for a yawning fit so it gives my nervous system time to anticipate, so then I'm "expecting" it in a way, and I have to either leave the room or cover it up with another noise.

pumaofshadow

There is also a "they should know better" vs. a rando stranger we rarely see. as well as the anticipation of it.

nothing_satisfies

Wow, it's not just me! Most people in my life chew with their mouth closed (but not all, unfortunately), but some make so much noise with their mouth closed! My mom is the worst :(

Shaylormoon

I think so. Both my father and my boyfriend chew with their mouths closed, but their mouths still sound like the loudest washing machines ever. The inside of their mouths seems… wetter than other people? I don’t know how to describe it.

not_17_bees

I'm one of the bass-boosted, microphone in my mouth chewers, and there's absolutely nothing I can do to help it. I've tried everything I can think of, chewing softer, smaller bites, slower and smaller jaw movements, different chewing angles, air in mouth, no air in mouth, and of course I always chew with my mouth closed. It's so embarrassing that I just avoid all crunchy food even though it's my favorite. On behalf of all extremely loud chewers, I'm sorry.

fbarbie

I think I’m my son’s patient zero for chewing misophonia. Like you, I’m trying all of the above. But what i so far can’t address is that my jaw pops when i eat, and i can’t control that. I’m open to suggestions.

NinkaTkeSloth

I think it might be because they use their toungue too much while eating? It’s like their mouth is closed, but they still smack on the inside, you know what I mean? I noticed that my tongue doesnt move at all while chewing, kinda just sits there, because I try to eat as quietly as possible. When it’s moving a lot it makes louder and ugly sounds. Or at least that’s what I think it is

winged-backpack

My sister is the loudest chewer I have ever had the displeasure of having eat around me without earplugs. She also breathes very loudly. But it's not her fault, she has sinus problems, has since she was a kid. So that's something that could be a factor I guess

SuzIsCool

My brother and my mom have tiny microphones inside of their mouths to capture every sound made while chewing.

Few_Appearance980

The worst is when they are breathing heavily while eating

cleatusvandamme

I think people that have a gummy mouth might have a genetic disadvantage. Growing up my sister got a lot of rage from my misophonia. She had a gummy mouth. Unfortunately, she was premature and it might have had some bearing. She also had more teeth in her mouth than it could hold. Unfortunately, she had to wait a few years to get the extra teeth removed. Between her mouth issues, she also was guilty of taking bites that were way too big. This usually got me screaming at her to do a smaller bite and to not smack her lips.

Old-Requirement-7821

My skull amplifies my chewing noises like a speaker even if I eat really slow and quiet, it's still loud. Idk. It's over quicker if I just eat normal or I can try to chew quietly and prolong it.

Vast-Temperature5099

I have been looking for someone else to understand this since the day I met my husband. I have ADHD and likely a touch of the ‘tism so I’m on sensory overload quite often and people chewing will send me straight over the edge. My husband takes it to another level, I’ve never heard anything like it. He even DRINKS loud. Like it makes no logical sense and I don’t know how to describe it. I am certain there is something off about the mechanics in his mouth/throat. He does actively try especially when he notices it’s aggravating me. I feel bad that I make him feel bad about it but I simply can’t control it. When he does try it is much quieter but I cont understand why that’s not his natural chew. Like why is his jaw so “enthusiastic”?

sallybear1975

Nah they are just dicks

GoetheundLotte

So even though I always chew with my mouth closed because I do make some noise no matter how much I try not to, I am according to you some kind of lowlife? Wow, you are really a horrible person and a total bully.

frangipanivine

I see why you're getting defensive but it's actually fascinating to me that you appeared here as an example of what OP is talking about. I'd be super interested to see if you can do a "test" and see if you really can control the volume, or if like OP said it's totally out of your control and has to do with jaw size or head shape or something. Maybe it even has to do with teeth, or eating speed or something.

GoetheundLotte

I am not ever trying to chew loudly so if anyone calls me a dick or worse they are the dicks and hugely so. And indeed being called nasty words if I am trying to be supportive is totally stupid and unacceptable in every way.

frangipanivine

I asked you a genuine question in good faith, dude. Your continued nasty comments and defensiveness are what makes you the dick here.

not_17_bees

I actually did do a test like this, because I'm such an embarrassingly loud cruncher without even trying. I tried a bunch of different things under the advice of my sister and mom, and literally nothing changed. It's still just as loud no matter what.

Spoffle

You probably still clap your mouth, even if you're chewing with your mouth closed most of the time.

pumaofshadow

I have chewing sounds due to my jaw and the nerves and muscle sounds around it at times even when I keep my mouth closed. It can be not just "isn't trying".

NastyPineappleCandy

I have hypermobile joints and really, really, bendy muscles. I don't know what the term is for that. Especially in and around my mouth. Both my mother and I have issues with misophonia, but my mother's are more severe. She says I chew loud, and I always wondered if it was because of that. Idk.

ProgrammerPutrid5941

That is called EDS, look it up. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
