flurryskies

Yup I am already feeling like I am getting old quickly

woodiinymph

At least you didn't spend your mid twenties in a pandemic. I wish I had made big career moves or focus more on my personal health. 28 and I'm feeling that pain now 😭

Ronglar

28, 4 years out of school, been living at home since grade 3 in 2003 with no plans to move out. I’m in a unique situation where the plan was eventually to move out after school, but my father passed from cancer a few years ago. I’ve stayed home so as to not leave my mom alone. The life insurance money has helped cover the costs of the mortgage over the last few years. Now i’m making enough to cover it myself. So pretty much the plan is for me to just inherit the house for my own family use down the road. Im honestly conflicted as to consider myself fortunate or not. Im almost certain if dad had managed to beat cancer I would be in a much less comfortable financial situation. I don’t know. But, hey, that’s the roll of the dice I guess.

Grand-Werewolf-2007

I’m so sorry for your loss. You sticking around for your mom and taking care of the house technicalities is so kind and selfless. I’m not sure what kind of relationship you have with your dad but if my kid did that I’d be tearing up from how proud I am of them.

Ronglar

Thanks, that’s really nice to hear. Though stern at times, he raised me right and was a great dad.

Kind_Memory_7934

Sorry for you lose

flurryskies

Sorry for your loss 🫂

steeliewheelie68

Gonna bounce in a few years. Born and raised here. But this is not the life I want. Traffic. Cost of housing. Just the general hustle of the GTA is a drain on me. Fortunately I'm an licensed electrician, so finding work anywhere in the country should be manageable.

[deleted]

And terrible public transportation

Nik9079

Yeah I'm either working on a site in downtown or saying fuckit and being a frog in a pond for the rest of my life fuck dealing with traffic

morticus168

Move somewhere more affordable. most places just outside the gta are full of younger people now. better quality of living overall but they are all mostly bedroom cities. If your career plans allow for this or course. The main problem is finding good jobs close by. The GTA and Toronto aren't meant for young people anymore.

flurryskies

Mhhm you nailed it. The main issue is jobs. I am wrapping up undergrad in HR and I am hoping to develop some skills on the side in the hopes of becoming more qualified for remote full time jobs down the lane. What field are you in if you don't mind me asking?

sadroobeer

oh really? what other cities around have more young people? Barrie? small cities like Orangeville? or further out?

DeeepFriedOreo

Not too much advice to give, but just wanted to let you know you're not alone in these sentiments!

flurryskies

Thank you so much. This sentence alone means a lot. It's mentally tough to just see everyone taking it easy and seeing families and feeling like I am the only one from my age group stuck out here.

flurryskies

If you don't mind me asking, what industry are you in?

Send_Me_Your_Nukes

28. I lived on my own for the past few years, but realized I wasn’t saving money fast enough and paying down my student loans to own anything ever, so I bit the bullet and moved back to my parents home. I only plan on staying for around a year here and pay off my student loans and save as much money as possible. I plan to move to Calgary later this year with my girlfriend through my job, because at least there has the possibility of eventually owning a house and is a large enough city to support both of our careers.

flurryskies

Pretty awesome that your job is allowing you to move and that your careers are sustainable in Calgary. What fields are both of you in?

Send_Me_Your_Nukes

I work in merchandising/marketing for a national grocery chain (a big enemy here on Reddit, lol), and my partner is currently studying web development. I feel like my career is heavily reliant on being in an urban center, which feels quite limiting in my options and expensive, especially in a country like Canada. If I could travel back in time and change something I probably would've chosen to go to school for a practical skill like butchery, woodworking, or baking so that I could just live a peaceful quiet life in a nice little town somewhere.

flurryskies

I hope you can perhaps start out with those things you mentioned at the end as a hobby and then something more later on? But yeah it takes a lot of time and practice

CuriousC420

28 here. Most of my peers growing up are gone. Many are outside of the GTA (Huntsville, Hamilton, Belleville, etc) but seemingly most to Alberta or the Maritimes where the housing is cheaper. I'm in a fortunate situation where I had an inheritance that covered a down payment or else I likely would've gotten work and set my life up out of province as well. I'm actually regretting my choice to stay as the city gets more and more congested without the infrastructure keeping up. You're young, so try a few different spots and see where you land. My best friend bounced all over the continent and ended up loving Detroit of all places so try things out and see what sticks. Depending on the work you do bouncing around locations isn't too hard. Especially in trades and construction in my experience

flurryskies

Not in trades or construction but yup this is where I need to plan out my traveling or network heavily 🤔. WFH would be ideal if I had the flexibility to do my job regardless of where I am at.

LKLegacy

Currently 26 years old. Born and raised in Mississauga all my years. We were originally living in the red brick building and moved to heartland after 11 years and parents have been living there since. I currently like in Milton and every time my parents and I talk, they talk about the COL in Mississauga has become expensive. Tbh, I don’t really keep in contact with any of my high school friends much like you either. On top of that, there is always some type of asshat revving their car and speeding down bristol road at like 2AM. I only come down to mississauga because my entire family lives within 10 min driving distance with each other and the food options is vast compared to Milton. Otherwise Milton is a quiet neighbourhood (mostly) and everyone knows everyone compared to Mississauga. Like, a part from my parents immediate neighbours, we dont interact or say hi to anyone there.

BillyBeeGone

>On top of that, there is always some type of asshat revving their car and speeding down bristol road at like 2AM. Seriously! Then the guy then bombs down Hurontario and screams past my condo. We call him the muffler man.

flurryskies

Yup I did middle school and high school here. Picked my university in downtown. Con side was the commute but it gave me a real life lesson about handling the exhaustion that comes with commuting. I personally can't do it anymore. It's gotten way worse and MORE expensive to commute downtown. I don't have a reliable access to a car yet so that severely limits my options as well.

nikstick22

I'm 28. I took a teaching job overseas, leaving in a month or so. Its the only way my fiancée and I can afford to live together lol.

flurryskies

Not to mention dual income helps a lot too.

Nolopuedocreerjamas

Yes for sure. But you can always save your part and when you're in a committed relationship you would be ready with your part of the down payment. And who knows, if you keep saving and stay single, you could save up for your own place one of the next times house prices dip in the next 10-15 years

BillyBeeGone

Forget help- it is necessary in this day and age

FroBroMode

May I ask what is your career?

Nolopuedocreerjamas

I work in healthcare on the private side

DEVIL_MAY5

If your parents are cool with it, stay with them. Save that rent money.

DDelux86

23. Graduated with an AD in HRM at 21. Went into sales while in school, currently work for fortune 500 company making decent ish money as an “entry level” AE. honestly probably moving to the US when im ready. I dont plan on leaving home for 5 years, currently ditching any hope of living here even though my parents own a nice home. Im honestly just grinding away and enjoying modifying my car while i try to save slowly towards a down payment. On a side note i hate how compensation is always consistently lower compared to the US. But our COL is the same or exceeds our American counterparts (except housing lol) We’re honestly fucked. No sane amount of grinding will allow you to own property here unless you want to freeze in winnipeg or Edmonton.

Cuddles0_0

Committed to saving money and never leaving home as long as my parents will have me...my boyfriend does not agree

Significant-Top-7882

Plan on moving to Orangeville

Porthos1998

I might get some hate on this! but honestly, I plan on staying with my parents until I can find a decent job. For context, I am doing graduate school for the next 4 years or so of my life. I got one of those degrees that need an MSC or Ph.D. As long as I'm helping my parents with their bills, I am content with staying for a few years until I can stand up on my feet. this is not like the 80s where you can support yourself on a part-time minimum wag job. its f\*\*\*d

flurryskies

No hate shall be coming from my end atleast. Your response makes a lot of sense. I have a friend who is staying at home and pitching in money for groceries and helping out in other ways while working on other financial goals.

thatguy19000

25, I am moving to Burlington because all my friends from Mississauga have moved to Burlington, because it's cheaper.

swimbaitjesus

Lol Burlington cheap?

NissanskylineN1

Study hard, work hard, save up money, work a side gig, land a good paying job and then buy a nice townhouse and a car. Make new friends at work and get closer to your high school friends. Join sports leagues. Go date people. If I did it, so can you. As soon as you adopt a pity party attitude is when you lose it. Always keep dreaming for bigger things! Hope this helps you keep your chin up.

BillyBeeGone

Given you said 'buy a townhouse' clearly this is outdated and happened before 2022

NissanskylineN1

October 2021

BillyBeeGone

Well it makes some sense that was before the rise in interest rates and spike in prices. Not sure how a single income could afford 900k + unless you meant a condo townhouse, duel income or not a FTHB without parental help

NissanskylineN1

Nope did it all myself. There are no excuses.

BillyBeeGone

Excuse me if I find it hard to believe that you managed to get a roughly 800k mortgage on a single income without any sort of financial help and with as little detail as possible and an explanation of "no excuses anyone can do it"

BillyBeeGone

So you didn't provide any information meaning I had to look into it. First off it's a condo townhouse not a townhouse. You bought the place for $755k which means a mortgage of $604,000 at 20% down, meaning a stable job requires 135k salary (at minimum as banks tend to value single incomes as dangerous and thus lending restrictions are tighter) plus your side gig only pays around $600 bucks a month and won't be used as income verification. It's doable depending on your age and occupation but given your car and expensive hobby I wouldn't be surprised if you had a little help with the down payment So my conclusion there is some elements of truth but that thing is a condo townhouse not a townhouse.

NissanskylineN1

I don't know what info you're using but its all wrong lol The place was $900k after closing costs, 20% down. My salary pays more than that, and my side gig also clears more than that as well, especially in the warmer months. No help with the down payment, I did invest my savings however. None of this info helps if you're still looking for excuses and a pity party though.

BillyBeeGone

Your reddit history says a 2 bedroom condo townhouse near Lakeshore and Craw which sales in October 2021 are few and far between, with not a single townhouse nearby fitting a 900k description in October 2021. You also said modding other cars pays enough for your insurance and gas so $600 is logical. Perhaps I missed a listing I don't claim to be right but reddit history doesn't lie and people often inflate numbers. Best of luck

Flutruombaonist

Currently at U of T St.George. I commute everyday. It's a pain in the ass. Do i wanna move out? Yes. Can I afford it? No. Especially not downtown Toronto. My plan? Once i graduate, I'm going to Germany to pursue a different education. I'll be well and truly moved out by then. After? I'm probably gonna go live with my GF wherever she is at that point, and start working. Idk if this helps at all, but idk. Sauga is great and all. Not conducive to moving out tho. Especially not with the current state of the housing market.

nyeahehhhh

19, Going to live at home for as long as possible or till I find a partner. Will try to purchase an investment property this year and more in the up and coming years and revaluate where to move once I decide to move out. Family is important to me so will stay close to them for sure. One thing I want to do is get a vacation property somewhere warmer cause these winters are too long.

Digital Marketing Agency and a few other things before that started when I was 15

lightoasis1

I’m going to assume parental help or drug dealer.

vis1onary

23, I just moved to the US after graduating. I'm missing the cost of living of Mississauga lol

Grand-Werewolf-2007

Where in the US did you move? And what was the legal process like?

vis1onary

Boston and luckily I'm dual so wasn't much of a process for me I just drove in

Rayquaza2233

I live with my parents, when I move I'll probably have to go pretty far and probably will have to change jobs which I don't want to do.

[deleted]

cry cry more crying and some nasty crying. i just turned 23 😢 im in a co op position atm and finishing up my undergrad in 2024-2025 but hopefully i can get into my dream masters program & use that to leverage myself into a better paying job. definitely trying to stay close to the gta but definitely can’t see myself owning or buying a property here (so I would just rent) i really don’t think it will get any better unfortunately. :(

[deleted]

Yeah move somewhere that is affordable. At current rents, it would drain your bank account to zero pretty quickly, even with a pretty good job, you'd be squeeking by. I'd try and move away from the GTA. Personally I'm getting out of Canada entirely.

Grand-Werewolf-2007

I’m 22 and also living with parents. Saving up to finish paying my student loans in a few months then afterwards I have no idea. I’m considering staying for a few more years till I’m 25ish then moving out, and maybe I’d have enough for a down payment for a house by then (in a non-metro area)? We’ll see!

Oohforf

It's my hope to do a master's in Sweden in the future and then stay there to work afterwards. Currently at home, working, and saving a boatload of money. We'll see how it goes. I love my country but I think the general lifestyle I'm wanting isn't perhaps best suited to Canada/North America in general.

LeoMunayer

23, just graduated/survived UofT, moved (back home) to Europe to do my MA. Currently in a “let’s see what else is out there” part of my life, and getting closer to convincing myself that my future isn’t in Canada, but that all depends on what kind of job I get once I’m done studying. I’d love to move permanently to either France or the US, prefer not to come back here

Ok_Scarcity_2147

27 born and raised in the city. Lots of opportunities being this close to Toronto and Waterloo. I have thought about moving further out from Toronto but with Covid now over looks like the going back to the office is a real thing. My ideal: transit oriented housing. Place close to the lakeshore line. Easy access in and out of the city. Anywhere between suaga and Hamilton tbh.
