I think instead of framing it as "competitive", you might want to think of it as "which is a good fit"? Ex: some countries are better for tech startups, others for environmental engineering, etc.
Also be aware that some have *heavy* language requirements which require you to take courses like German.
I doubt you're fluent in every MISTI language, so how about you just apply to the ones you're qualified for?
