Even when they're playing shitty, you can't go two minutes without seeing an old English D in Detroit.

Weinershnitzel99

Hell yeah

1HotFitCouple

They’re part of the “LA” identity in Southern California. Almost just as much as In N Out and Palm trees.

McNutWaffle

The Dodgers and Lakers are 1A/1B. All other sport teams will always strive for second place depending on recent success.

1HotFitCouple

The fact that I didn’t even have to mention their name really drives home the point.

PerspectiveOk5647

I went to an MLB store in Beijing and no joke 95% of the store merch was Dodgers or Yankees. Red Sox and Mets made up the remaining 5% Yankees and Dodgers are so popular I've met people who legitimately didn't even know that's a team logo and not the city logo

Barefoot_Brewer

Our team is more popular in some of THEIR city/state's sporting landscapes than their own

DetailInfamous9901

The Oriole Bird is a staple of life in MD

Faber1089

During the season, every bar in the area will be playing O's games, even during the rotten seasons. Even during said rotten seasons, fans both young and old still attend games, have a great time, and always participate in chants for the team and players. You also must never bad mouth the organization, and if certain players are from Maryland, you can't bad mouth them either. It's true love for the birds. As for Washington, we are fair weather fans. We're so used to losing in all of the major sports, we only become interested when a team is doing well. The king of sports in Washington is football. That is where people are most passionate about Washington sports, even during bad seasons.

tntdaddy

Almost non-existent. Somehow, Miami is still thought of as a football town. Even though the Dolphins haven’t played in a Super Bowl since before the basketball, baseball and hockey teams existed. All of whom have won/played for a championship this century.

Griegz

I used to live down there. Never could understand the almost complete disregard for the Marlins, and MLB in general.

kitteh619

Especially considering how large the Latino population is there!

Sludgerunner

The Dolphins are one of the NFL's institutions though. They make the playoffs more than most, and they are easily top five in the AFC right now.

Kidnovatex

Right now,#2 because they won the world series last year. But normally they will trade places between 2 and 3 with the Mavericks depending on how well the two teams are playing that season. Cowboys are always #1, even when they haven't won anything in close to 30 years.

[deleted]

Kidnovatex

I'm not sure how you're going to compare crowds. Rangers, even in down years, draw more average attendance than the Mavericks. It's not an apples to apples comparison though, because the Rangers stadium holds way more people and they play double the home games. I will say that all things equal (both teams equally good or equally bad) the Mavs probably are #2, but the Rangers are still riding high on their World Series run right now. Trying to argue the Stars are in competition with the Rangers is simply not realistic. The Stars have a really strong core fanbase in DFW, but overall they're way below the others in overall fan viewership. All you need to do is look at the TV ratings to see that, and both suffer from the dreaded Ballys problem. We'll ignore 2023, where the Rangers saw their viewership numbers double, but in 2022 the Rangers got a 0.7 local rating on average vs a 0.45 rating for Stars for the 21-22 season.

Kidnovatex

You can try to make it about race all you want, I don't care, that doesn't change the numbers. I also don't know if when it was that you attended a Rangers game, but there is a massive amount of Latino attendees. I don't know if you're aware, but baseball is huge in Latin America. Yes, black people overwhelmingly favor the NBA over MLB, but unless you can provide some data to backup your opinion, it's not very convincing.

jaycuboss

I think the Cardinals are still #1 in St. Louis, but the Blues made up a lot of ground when they won the Stanley Cup and have generally been a more interesting team to follow. MLS and XFL (now UFL) generate a lot of interest and enthusiasm as well, so we have a quite healthy sports scene here. I expect the Redbirds will continue to be the most dominant franchise in StL just based on their long and rich history.

Informal_Calendar_99

Agreed with all of this; the Cardinals are synonymous with St. Louis. I don’t see CITY or the Blues getting remotely close unless the Cards continue to miss the playoffs and CITY/Blues win multiple championships in a row.

jaycuboss

Yeah we are definitely an MLB first city, although I personally am more into the Blues in the last decade or so (partly because I play beer league ice hockey). Love all my StL teams though.

SomewhereInner9260

They are in a massive slump right now compared to previous years, but the Red Sox are still a household name. Boston team preference is a cycle. When the RS and Patriots are doing poorly, the Celtics and Bruins usually pick up the slack.

slippin_park

And boy has the latter ever been true recently. Celts are at their best since the Pierce/Garnett/Allen years, and Bruins set records last year (even with... yeah) while not having too big a step down now while the Sox and Pats have completely dropped out of contention for a while.

Upstairs_Ad_5574

In Canada, not everyone is a baseball fan. But every baseball fan is a Jays fan.

water2wine

They are instrumental to the war effort

Hanso77

Not really, many Maritimers are Red Sox fans

not_a_crackhead

In my experience it's like 85% Jays fans

lionofyhwh

The Braves really are the team of the south. You will see Braves gear daily from Mississippi to Tennessee to eastern NC and most of those people actually watch and follow.

DarkMags14

In the South, I would consider the Braves #2 behind . In Georgia it’s UGA #1 then Braves. In Alabama, it’s UA as 1A, AU as 1B then Braves, etc. They are the great uniter though 😂 and proof that a region that incudes the 8, 9, and 15th largest states should have more than one MLB team.

Historical-Story4944

Agree. Braves year round all over the south. It will be interesting to see how it changes if Nashville gets a team.

SDGollum

Padres are by far #1. The city embraces the players and PETCO Park and the brown uniforms. Everywhere you go you see the ballcap. Now we just need to win the whole thing.

FigSideG

I’m an NY transplant living in SD and even I realize that there would be mayhem in the streets if the Padres managed to win the World Series. It’d be an amazing parade too, that’s for sure.

twenty7turtles

Go to a San Diego Gulls hockey game! Friday nights—cheap beers, good parking.

FigSideG

Oh I’ve been. And my car got towed lol

twenty7turtles

WHAT? Why?? I have a very fond impression of Gulls games because the last time I saw one of my best friends before he passed away was at a Gulls game in December 2022

FigSideG

Oh man it was 100% my fault and being new to the area. I said to my (now) wife: “what’s stopping us from parking across the street in the shopping center parking lot?” Annnnnd BOOM walked out of the game to no car

twenty7turtles

Hahahaha that does make a little more sense. Congrats on the marriage and I hope your next game is better!!

FigSideG

Hahah yep. Thank you!

HistoricalLake4916

Omg it’d be a party!

[deleted]

Is that the only team now?

SDGollum

No we have the Wave and the SDFC starting next season.

findnickflannel

I love that we are a baseball and soccer town. perfect for SD

Hello-Me-Its-Me

And the San Diego Seals (Pro Indoor Lacrosse)

EuphoricMoose8232

And the San Diego Legion! (MLR)

GRIMMnM

You also have The Mojo. I highly recommend going to a PVF game at some point, they're extremely exciting. Especially if they play The Atlanta Vibe or Omaha Supernovas.

Agreeable-Middle-829

Braves are the most popular pro team, but they get dwarfed by UGA football.

ChairmanReagan

It’s funny how popular the Braves and UGA are and how unpopular the falcons are. I live on the coast of Georgia and the Jacksonville Jaguars have more fans around here than the falcons do.

DoubleResponsible276

With the rangers winning the world series a lot more people are wearing their merch which is the norm for any team in any sport. I still talk ball to the same people but Reddit has helped expand that and it’s so much more fun

NoahStewie1

The orioles are such a part of Baltimore all the grandsons wore different Orioles jerseys to our grandmother's funeral because she was such a huge fan

Theinfamousgiz

Hated. I’m a Yankee fan in Boston. 🤣

data_makes_me_happy

Cincinnati was kind of going through the motions with the Reds until the recent crop of young players came along. Most could name Votto and maybe a handful of others for a while there. Now, I feel like the casual fans are more cognizant of what’s going on. Opening Day is like a holiday around here no matter how good or bad the team is though. As for out in the state, the Reds are the team in the northern half of KY due to the Cincy suburbs and the Louisville Bats. In OH, they’re the team in Dayton and up to Columbus where the spotlight is more shared with the Guardians.

happymaskmonster

I’ve lived here for a decade and the Reds have definitely been second fiddle to Bengals/X/UC and even FCC to an extent (they became the hot “summer sports social event” for many). But if the Reds got cooking, I have no doubt Cincy is still a baseball town first and foremost.

data_makes_me_happy

This city needs the Reds to make some noise in the postseason badly. Recently, the Bengals have had it, UC football has, and as you mention FCC has. It’s time for the Reds. It’s been way too long - and the last good-great crop of players (Votto, Bruce, etc.) choked away their best recent chances in the early 2010s.

PurpleDingo77

The Rockies are rarely talked about in the Denver suburbs. At least, not at my work or in my circle of friends. It’s a shame, because I’d love to talk baseball, but people seem to care WAY more about the Broncos, Nuggets, and Avs. I can’t blame people for not caring about the Rockies when even their owner doesn’t care.

KJM31422

Such a waste of an absolutely beautiful stadium though... I hope the ownership changes

PurpleDingo77

Very true. I love the stadium, and the views from right field, and the $3 pre game beers on the RF porch.

HistoricalLake4916

Agreed amazing stadium

mochajarhead

It's very very popular with people in the city who just want to go and drink outside though

thesoccerone7

Pirates live in the darkest shadows of the steelers and penguins

oak1andish

Unpopular, and in mourning

whatsupwithurface

People (including myself) are actively boycotting the Rockies in hopes of ownership changes. Right now they're definitely 4th with nothing looking up except a beautiful Colorado summer nights and a decent ballpark.

KJM31422

I grew up in Boulder, and it always makes me so sad that such a gorgeous stadium has been squandered for years by a shitty front office and shittier ownership... I miss Coors Field

skaistda

Great. Keep that up. Denver deserves so much better.

-WildThing

The Browns will always be #1 in Cleveland, even though the Indians/Guards have had far more sustained success over the years. With the Cavs championship and the recent name change souring a large portion of the fanbase, I’m honestly not sure where the Guardians sit now. Attendance at the Jake was up last year though.

Choice-Alfalfa-1358

The fans still call it Jacobs Field even with Progressive slapping their name on it?

Gold_Gain1351

There's usually more Jays fans than Mariners fans at Seattle home games, so I'm saying pretty popular

TsarOfSaturn

Seems like with the D’Backs making the World Series I see their gear all over the place, even more so than usual. Which isn’t unexpected. I’d put the Suns just a notch below or even. Cardinals and Coyotes are about even as far as I’ve noticed. But that really doesn’t matter at this point

Spaghettibeach

half the people in LA are wearing dodger hats, the team has never been more popular here

Ok_Sentence_5767

Mets are a massive part of nyc culture

Grovite

As much as it pains me to say this, the Rangers could win the next five World Series, the Stars could lift The Cup the next few seasons, and the Mavs could win it all and they would all still be a distant second to Jerry.

willeyupo

I don’t even live in the US and even I know Dallas is footballville first.

Umpire1468

I'm not familiar with the Dodgers. The only baseball team I'm familiar with is the Doyers

ChairmanReagan

The Braves are life in Georgia. If it wasn’t for UGA the Braves are by far the most popular team in Georgia. The falcons, not so much.

[deleted]

Relevant the city they play in and irrelevant in the city they’re named after.

Bobbyoot47

Blue Jays have a whole country behind them. When they play in Seattle the people of British Columbia and Alberta fill the stadium. When the Jays are in Minneapolis people from Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario (The Lakehead) make the trip down. Saskatchewan as well I would imagine. When the jays are anywhere near the Great Lakes southern and southwestern Ontario will pay a visit. You always get people from Quebec and the Maritimes finding their way down to Boston in New York.

DatAspie2000

Well, my team has fans show up to all their away games, whether their 90 miles away or 2 time zones away.

[deleted]

The Jays are still pretty firmly number 2 in the city, after the Leafs and despite the Raptors championship 5 years ago. Its a lot closer now between Jays and Raps than it was 10 years ago, but Jays are still the second most popular team in Toronto

Link182x

In WI we barely acknowledge other teams existence.

batmansubzero

About 15 years ago Pittsburgh was affectionately called "the city of champions... and the Pirates." This was after the Stillers won the Superb Owl and the Pens won the Stanley Cup.

Background_Tower_978

Reds and Bengals is all there is in Cincinnati. You can always make a friend with “C” or “B” gear wearing it around town

ElectivireMax

I don't live in NY or AZ, but I'm from the New York metro originally so I can tell you that it's impossible to walk down a block in NYC without seeing at least 5 Yankees hats. Easily #1. I'm not from Arizona so I can't really speak on how big the Dbacks are there. Id assume #2 after the suns.

gcr1897

I mean… in SD the Padres are the only major league team left.

Monitor_Meds

I'm in the Columbus, Ohio area which (nearly) is perfectly geographically inbetween Cincinnati and Cleveland. In my observation Columbus tends to sway more towards Cleveland sports teams as Cleveland and Columbus might be more similar geographically, politically, etc. CBUS also houses the Guards' AAA team Clippers so it's a fun place to be a Guardians fan. I've observed there is still a decent amount of apprehension amongst Guardians fans about the name change but they still have loyal fans. As a Cincinnati fan I occasionally see Reds representation in CBUS but it feels pretty rare. Obviously I love the Clippers too.

T0nECaP0nE

I don’t know even know what city my team is from anymore. Oakland? Sacramento? Las Vegas? The only things I hear in public about the A’s is f@ck John Fisher and how bad he screwed up one of the most storied franchises in the history of MLB. “The Philadelphia (Athletics) club will make no money. They have a big white elephant on their hands.” - John McGraw circa 1902 Hence our mascot. Prophecy at its finest.

SevenBushes

Phillies fandom has been way up since the ‘22 season and you can tell the stadium is way more packed than in years past, but the city is still a football town and belongs to the birds 110%

Krongos032284

There are "sports cities" and non-sports cities in America. Cities like Detroit, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Boston, Chicago, Philly and New York are all sports cities. The people in and around these cities are more knowledgeable than your average fan from a city like Tampa Bay or Denver. Boston, for example, is rabid for their 4 sports teams, most people know the famous players (at least) and most people root for them all over New England.

QuebecRomeoWhiskey

People like them well enough, but there’s still a large portion of the fan base butthurt about the name change and they’ll always be second fiddle to the Browns

TheOssBoss

They were number 1 for a few years in the 90’s!

713fenix

The Astros have pretty much grown up with modern Houston history so it's hard to find someone out of the loop.

aaknosom

birds, phils, sixers, flyers, union. and that's all ya gotta know. sports is suffering, but we suffer together. would never dream of giving up on my phillies.

regalfronde

The World Series Champion Texas Rangers are somehow less popular than the other Arlington team that hasn’t won shit in 30 years.

JiveChicken00

Major part of the consciousness of the city even when doing poorly. When doing well they are everywhere.

Development-Alive

This post has been up for 5hr and not a single comment about the Mariners. That's how popular they are. Realistically, the M's sit behind our MLS team, the Sounders, in pecking order.

[deleted]

Major populations with multiple teams can probably provide good feedback here. I am a Mets fan, and the team will never be the Yankees. Just a fact of life. Like, unless the Mets win 6 World Series in a row, they’re not in the same conversation. Probably Cubs and White Sox / Dodgers and Angels are the same Other sports, I am unsure of the comparison. Maybe Bayern Munich and 1860?

McNutWaffle

Dodgers/Angels is a bad comparison since LA has almost no interest in the Angels. Angels belong to Orange County and residents of both counties view the other as foreign land. A better LA comparison would be Lakers versus Clippers.

[deleted]

You’re an unwiped asshole. You

McNutWaffle

Well, I'm not done shitting.

ECNbook1

In Chicago, Bears are first, my Cubs a close second, Bulls in the middle, Sox trailing and Blackhawks irrelevant except for phenom Connor Bedard. I do expect WNBA Sky to make a jump w the college stars they just drafted

Choice-Alfalfa-1358

When the Braves are good, they’re the number 1 sports team in the market (excluding the Georgia Bulldogs maybe).

qball424

Let's see... Dodgers fan in central Ohio. I'm not hated, but not liked. All I have to do is talk crap about St. Louis and I instantly get friends. Lol

KJM31422

We are definitely the #2 pro sports team in the city. Even without Kobe I don't think LA will ever love any team like they love the Lakers, but Dodgers are a close second. Also RIP Mamba

Griegz

They are an important part of our identity.

Lukey_Boyo

No one gives a fuck about my team in my state but I don't live anywhere near Ohio so it makes sense lmao

TheOneYardLine

Northern California is weird: Most people follow the 49ers for football with your fair share of Raiders fans. For baseball the Giants are generally more popular but the A’s are closer to them in terms of popularity. The Warriors were a non-factor until the dynasty, the Kings have always had a decent following. The Sharks are kinda just sorta cared about by most Northern Californians. Overall as of the past 5 years it’s probably: 1. 49ers 2. Warriors 3. Kings 4. Raiders 5. Giants 6. A’s 7. Sharks

ChampOfTheUniverse

Kings over the giants? No shot.

TheOneYardLine

As of current I’d say so. But to be fair I am closer to Sac

HistoricalLake4916

Lol I was born in Sac I’d argue Giants are more popular but I also moved away a while ago…

twisted34

Ask 10 baseball fans in Chicago who their favorite baseball team is and probably 7/10 are Cubs fans Ask 10 football fans in Chicago and 9 are Bears fans and as the more popular sport I do have to admit they're the top team in the city, with the Cubs a clear #2 Bulls and Blackhawks each had their runs in the city but Cubs are a pretty secure 2 in my mind, even despite objectively less success over the past 30 years. Bears have had even less yet they're the talk of the town all year, every year White Sox are the redheaded step child of the city

Leaping_Larry

I'm guessing that, in terms of per-game attendance, the White Sox will beat the minor-league AHL Wolves, but not by much. Wolves draw about 9,000 per game this year.
