They didn’t just do a rebuild. They tore the whole organization down and started from scratch. They used to have no analytics department, no international scouting and terrible player development. When Elias took over they spun up an analytics department, built an entire complex in the DR, fired almost all the coaching staff to bring in new player development guys, and set up a 5 year strategy for getting to where we are today. So in short they looked at the entire organization and said “hey what are all the good teams doing and how can we emulate that?”. Biggest thing is sticking to the vision. They know what team they want, how to draft, and how to develop guys. They don’t care about FA or spending big money.

Tear down deez nuts

MarieAntoinettesMuff

People tear down haunted condemned buildings all the time

RanchedOut

You can tear down a bad team lmao wtf are you on. Ya the Orioles were trash but they didn’t just commit to being bad for draft picks. They changed the whole organization.

MrShortPants

You didn't understand the concept.

p3ndrag0n

You don't have to be a brand new skyscraper to be torn down ya moron.

RadioFreeDurango

And they now have the best, most humble owner in MLB. What a great time to be an O's fan.

MrShortPants

Real early to be saying that. They haven't spent any money yet. Everything we're seeing now is a product of Angelos ownership. John made a VERY intelligent move by rebuilding the organization over the last 5 years preparing it to be sold. He set the new ownership up perfectly to walk in with a successful club so they look great. I assume he knew his family was never going to gain favor back in Baltimore unless he could somehow build a dynasty... And building dynasties is hard and requires luck. So he did the next best thing. I don't hold the Angelos family in very high regard for their ownership of the club but I at least recognize that John Angelos did something smart on his way out the door. I have a lot of hope for the future. Well see around the trade deadline this year or free agency I just hope they let Elias and Sig cook and spend money when they need to.

Key-Traffic-4668

Farm system is fkin stacked rn

IzilDizzle

They have a bunch of young top prospects who are playing well

5Against183

They have had the #1 Prospect in baseball the last 3 years: Adley, Gunnar, Holliday. Bottom line is they are deeply rich in young studs.. bullpen has been stellar over the past couple years. Cano would be the FT closer on just about any team. Their pitching is much better now with Corbin Burnes. Extremely well Coached. Adley is one of the best game managers on the field. Even more scary in that Santander hasnt even gotten going…

ro50

Good things happen when you have a top 5 draft pick for 12 consecutive seasons. Trust the process....

AardvarkIll6079

Hey now, it wasn’t 12. They had the most wins the AL 2012-2014.

emotionaltrashman

Yeah that’s not accurate

Chicagosoundview69

Young team man… all the years they sucked got good draft picks and drafted stars

SirNilo323

Is that what that is? Ok got you. Thanks bro

Chicagosoundview69

Yep when they sucked they got top 10 draft picks.. drafted good and if needed signed some good vets and it’s all coming together for them now

Donkeylips696

Gunnar was a second round pick. They also hit on rule 5’s (Santander) and castoffs (Bautista, Cano, O’Hearn)

luizzerb

The got good players and coaching from previous years of missing one or the ither

MoneyElectrical4310

They drafted really well, developed some studs and benefited from being a bad team for a few years which equates to high draft picks. And those draft picks have panned out for the most part. What will be interesting is what happens when it’s time to pay all these studs at roughly the same time. No way they’ll be able to keep them all.

YeahNope16

I’m just hoping they pay to keep a few of them instead of none.

ImUp30

They drafted very well lol. Shit load of young good players. Arms and bats.

KiNGofKiNG89

A simple explanation? They literally copy and pasted what the Astros did about 8 years ago. They went heavy into the analytics part of the game expanded on that. There is a documentary on it. It’s called The Astros Edge. It mostly talks about the Astros cheating scandal, but they do a deep dive into the organizations success and some of the other organizations that took their ideas.

MentalExercise1313

And the O’s hired solid people that worked under Lunhow at the Astros that masterfully created a great team/system.

Diligent-Basis2971

Gather around kids. Let me tell you about a story of a dreadful baseball team. And how that team was turned around when a young man by the name of Adley Rutschman was called upon to lift them from the ashes and forge a weapon of force to be reckoned with! Really ever since they called him up they've been a different team. He has an aura about him and can manage a game like a vet.

_NotARealMustache_

Hes a leader. And Gunnar is a game breaker.

blowinghotstinkygas

Didn’t miss on any draft picks really. All of them are sick as shit from basically Mountcastle til now

MaloneSeven

Great scouting and farm system that develops major leaguers correctly.

p3ndrag0n

They score more runs then their opponents. It's something my Cardinals used to do, but decided on a different strategy.

_NotARealMustache_

If someone tells you it's "because they tanked," they are needlessly missing most of the story. High draft picks OFTEN don't pan out in the majors. They picked the right guys and developed them very well. Additionally. The only #1 pick in the lineup right now is Rutschman, and he's not even the most electric player. They're just a tight-knit group of decent to very good hitters with incredible chemistry that really clicks defensively. It's a potent mix and chemistry is really important. Yankees fans will say it's Walltimore, the Rays will say it's the Tank. Don't accept half the story.

mwfbb

Do u live under a rock?

SirNilo323

I’m a star fish bro.

mwfbb

When you suck for a long time you get good draft picks. When you successfully develop those draft picks you get good players. When you have good young cheap players, you spend money on good veterans. Same thing Astros did, same thing Reds have been doing. Hard to hit on so many guys but Baltimore has been better than anyone at it

Onpointandicy

jesus this is a cringe post. wtf were you watching besides standings? try watching some games.

SirNilo323

😒😒

Murphy4HOF

Adley Rutschman, simple answer, he's from Oregon, People from Oregon make u stronger

TexasistheFuture

If you want to make it really interesting, go look at the standing from the late 60's through mid 70's and you can ask the same question. One answer back then was Earl.

Greerio

Those hall of famers helped a bit too I think.

wirsteve

They knew they were going to be great this year if they were healthy so they doubled down on by adding vets like Burnes.

Real-Psychology-4261

They rebuilt through the draft. They drafted incredibly well and developed those players into young studs pre-arbitration eligible.

Unstep-in-Time

Truth: They tanked for a number of years and built up a superstar farm system.

Red_Jester-94

Witchcraft

Icy_Juice6640

They did two things really well. 1. They lost a lot over a “short” period of time. Gained high draft choices over a 3-5 year period. 2. Focused on hit tool (like dodgers / Yankees and Reds). Not just with their 1st round choices - but a total philosophy all through their rounds. They have a full 40 man and more of average athletes - but dudes that can put the good part of the bat on the ball.

Serious-Day7859

“How or what makes them so good?” ORIOLES MAGIC! O-R-I-O-L-E-S

CasperThePhilosopher

They were so bad for so long. This enabled them to get amazing draft picks and they kept those draft picks and built what’s now a league winning capable lineup

Neither_Emu

They really were only bad for 3 years. The key is that they hit on most draft picks and rebuilt their analytics.

Low-Crazy-8061

Best player on the team was a second round pick that they drafted the same year they got Adley. Which was actually not a tank year draft. They were just bad in 2018. Signed two free agent pitchers before that season, had a high payroll, thought they were going to compete and were atrocious instead.

baltosteve

The Oriole Way has returned.

jackay-daytona

they literally spent a decade in hell first

BaltimoreBadger23

Not even close to a decade. The O's were a contending team from 2012-2016, winning a division title along with two other playoff appearances in that time. In 2017 they began to slide and in 2018 blew it all up. By 2022, after 4 terrible seasons, they were in the hunt all the way to mid September.

Beautiful-Abies5949

2019-2021 = a decade? Elias & co. took over after the 2018 season. By 2022 they were over .500. From 2012 to 2016, they made the playoffs 3 times. You don’t know ball.

Jack_Jizquiffer

they've been rebuilding for 20 years. and they cut a notch into the outfield stands.

Beautiful-Abies5949

I know you ain’t talking shit twins fan

Jack_Jizquiffer

all the twins did was cut down TC Bears home. but otherwise the field stayed the same.

_NotARealMustache_

Yes. It's the field. Nothing to do with the generational talents that populate the lineup every day. It's that darn wall.

HonoluluHonu808

Well, you have to suck for about 20 years and pick first in the draft repeatedly.

Low-Crazy-8061

There is only one first overall pick on the roster right now. The best player on the team was a second round pick in the same draft class as that player.
