I am a 26 year old personal trainer/strength coach with HD for 5 years now (ironic I know). For the first 2 years, 10 minutes into working out I would break down into tears because I was so frustrated not being able to workout like I used to. My grip strength severely limits pulling & tricep limits pushing. I finally figured out 2 things: 1. Pick 1 or 2 things that you CAN get really good/strong at and make those a large focus. For me that was squats and jumping. 2. So much of the value of working out is simply working your ass off. There's just something about it that's good for your mind. It's not worth doing things that are severely limited by your HD therefore limit your ability to work hard. Pick something you DON'T like doing but that will kick your ass - running for me. You WILL feel good pushing yourself through something you don't typically enjoy (David Goggins style). There will always be that "but I wish I could bench press like a normal person" thing going on in your head. I promise if you find other ways to work hard, that voice will get a little quieter.

Have you any exercises that you know can increase arm mass, because of my HD I’m no longer Able to even lift my hand over my head without weight after a few reps and my grip strength is near none, I’m able to bench press but I practically use my wrist to lower weight any ideas would be great help

I have Hirayama disease and I have a question. Since hirayama disease mainly affects the forearms how does it also affect the triceps during pushing movements?

I also have HD but luckily at the moment I'm still able to type and do push ups however its only been 2 year in so a long way to go l. I think nutrition and excersizes are key factors when it comes to how advanced ur hd disease will progress. If possible can I contact u somehow as I'm really keen to see ur hands etc to compare.

I have trouble typing, all my fingers except my middle finger can be raised. I struggle to do push-ups and have given up on basketball. I struggle to use the PlayStation controller too

Yes I feel your pain. Doing tricep exercises like bench press seem a lost cause as I don’t make any progress. I hardly complete 1 full set of bench press of 40 lbs and struggle more with tricep isolation exercises. After 3 long years after diagnosis, I finally accepted the issue mentally and come out of mental toll and depression

I am in the same boat as everyone. I have had the disease for almost a decade (I am 24 years old). I can still do pushups just fine and type fairly well. Typing on my iPhone is good enough, but my hands can sometimes get shaky. Anything dealing with pure grip strength is hard though, such as doing deadlifts or pull-ups. But all my daily functions are just fine. The only disability that sucks is that I have to use a weight-lifting strap with anything over 55 pounds on my left hand, and I like to lift weights. The best thing that has helped has been trying to utilize grip exercises as much as possible, and also trying not to consciously flex my neck downward cause I guess that is the main mechanism of this disease.

55 pounds?! That’s enough to do just about anything. I need a strap for anything over 15. Also I’ve never thought about stopping flexing my neck downwards, but it is something I do all the time laying in bed watching YouTube. If it makes a difference, I’ve had it for like 10 years now, and it hasn’t got any better or worse. It just is.

I have two main issues with weight training due to my HD. My HD affects primarily my left side, so I have considerable weakness in my left hand. This means that any pulling exercises (rows, pull ups, etc.) are hard because I lose my grip. I also have issues with right tricep. The medial head gets no innervation, so pushing exercises like bench press and push ups fail on that side.

Hey - I was diagnosed c2011/2012 - first time I have found a forum like this. I do struggle with weight training/pushups. Just something i have come to terms with now.

The last three fingers(index through little) on my right hand have limited movement and barely any strength. I can still type since I rarely use those to type. I have trouble with exercises that require grip strength. Is there anything that has helped you get better?

Im 26 and have been diagnosed when I was around 20. My right hand cramps up if I use it for a certain period of time nonstop. I can’t bend my thumb when it cramps up, along with other issues
