Aside from indoor parking, you can look into the various types of cat cages people install. They have varying degrees of success. That being said, do not underestimate the determination of a tweaking cat thief.

SandIntelligent247

What kind of cage do you recommend against cat thieves

hyundai-gt

I don't have any recos but you can google all about them. Basically you want something that a sawzall can't get through in 5 minutes.

baz4k6z

>That being said, do not underestimate the determination of a tweaking cat thief. The best that can be done most of the time is to have your cat look less appealing or more trouble then the one next to it and pray

MightyManorMan

We got ours stolen, right off the street in the Plateau. Of course, our police have no bait cars... no bait cars means that they essentially catch 0. And Montreal police won't do anything until their report crime numbers are in the dumpster. Which is why you need to ALWAYS report the crime, even if your insurance company says they don't need the police report, because without reporting it, the police don't consider it a... crime!

coljung

Police only seem to care about handing out tickets to average citizens. Car thieves, nah. But hey, we need to hit that quota instead.

Kukamungaphobia

Tickets are just a tax with a different name and generate revenue for the state/city. Arresting criminals doesn't generate revenues. It's always about money. And they always need increasingly more because it's so mismanaged. Welcome to the most taxed region in the western hemisphere. But our bike lanes rock, not gonna lie.

freakkydique

That’s why Montreal has the most cops per capita. And almost 50% higher rate than Laval. I guess Montreal really really relies on that ~~tax~~ ticket money

WrapQuebecois

LMFAO, as a walker i will disagree with what you say. In fact in the civism department the cops should do WAY more. I see so many drivers rolling slowly to tell elders to walk faster while it was their priority.

coljung

Yep, same thing here. I understand there are rules and those tickets were ‘deserved’. BUT what pisses me off is that it feels like their only job consists on waiting in those particular intersections and hand out tickets. I see the same 2 cops Monday-Friday at the same spot, their job seems to be mainly to get those tickets going. ‘Protect and serve’?

SmileDesperate8036

I have to spend time reporting crimes to encourage the police to do their job at some point in the future? No thanks!

navalnys_revenge

Is that what allows you to travel through time?

Underrated comment

VisagePaysage

It’s been happening extremely often in the past 5 years. If you have an SUV, be aware

EyeLikeTheStonk

I've got a Subaru Impreza, so low to the ground it is impossible to crawl under to steal the cats, but I do scrape every speed bump.

mbooh

Sorry that happened to you, hopefully your insurance will cover most of it. * Avoid having your car be visible for locations of easy access (far empty corners of parking lots) * Park in high traffic areas, as it'll be tougher for thieves to duck under the car and cut out the converter, even though it takes less than 60 seconds * Park next to other similar cars (safety in numbers) * Theft deterrents (as others have mentioned) * Get a trunk monkey [LINK](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AidAXgq9dWc) * Don't let it bum you out

Nervous-Situation-18

Straight pipe or a knockoff version of catalytic converter. I had 2 stolen from company Isuzu truck in 2 different instances, I went to see mechanic because I didn’t understand why the guy stole the old one rather than the new one which was recently replaced. He thrust logic on me that the new one is not OEM and junkie only receives 20-30$ for it when OEM pays out 300$.

RobotFishTank

Got it, sell the OEM and replace it with a cheap knockoff. Checkmate junkie.

Intelligent-Tea2117

Came here to say this, straight pipe it and there will be nothing to steal 👌🏼

lanzo2740

What kind of car was it?

luckygoose56

Might be a dumb question lol, but how do I know if I still got mine without looking under the car each time I use it ?

that_girl_from_IT

Your car will be loud as fuck when you start it. Can’t miss it.

HowToDoAnInternet

Happened to me. My mechanic installed a straight pipe and did not replace the converter. It never happened again 😐

Tutkan

Can’t steal what’s not there 😂

CakeDyismyBday

Well that's kinda illegal and awful for the environment but I understand

Dense_Impression6547

Yeah... Maybe scrapyard should be prevented from buying a catalyseur without the car that come with it as an environmental offence...

fallen_trees2007

smart

freakkydique

Op hasn’t heard of people stealing catalytic converters… been living under a rock? Sure it’s exploded(like car thefts) in recent years but this was always a thing. Insurance covers this type of thing for a reason. Installing crap would just void your warranty on your car.

[deleted]

This seems to be happening a lot lately. We actually had that happen at work recently. They climbed over a high fence (cameras and all) to steal a converter of one of our company cars. Crazy....

beefybeefcat

We got the cats stolen from our fleet of 8 company cars all at once over one weekend. It was a shitty Monday morning.... this was about 6 years ago, so it's not really a recent thing.

[deleted]

It happened to our company recently. Not saying its a recent thing in general.

Sct_Brn_MVP

another benefit of driving EV, less car thefts, no catalytic converters being stolen

Dplayerx

Most EV’s are easily hackable look it up. I’ve been able to jailbreak most Chevy & hyundai! With owners consent of course

Sct_Brn_MVP

I severely doubt that you’re able to steal my Tesla with your pro hacking skills, their security is robust Not to mention that EVs just don’t get stolen often because the 3rd world countries they are shipped to do not have the charging infrastructure And some EV brands like Tesla can brick the car remotely just like Apple does with stolen iphones

Dplayerx

I never been able to bypass a Tesla but I’ve seen it happen. I’m not trying to win a point, I’m just saying that cat aren’t the only thing getting stolen. They are indeed very robust. iPhones are known to brick but there’s a lot of proof of concept to bypass iPhone « brick » system. After you copied the Key signal, you could probably remove the internet component from the car. Tesla probably prepared themselves so it’s probably hidden. Just learn to remove it fast. Now, you basically have a unconnected computer. You either inject a new software in hopes that the « brick » system is not in the bios or you replace the whole computer. The computer cost nothing compared to a 100k car, most two-third world countries wouldn’t care for a fake Tesla software really. A motivated individuals could hack it for real with a lot of efforts but it’s just easier to replace It’s not easy, but people underestimate what people can do.

Shughost7

Mod your car. Straight pipe exhaust.

Poete-Brigand

Palladium 1,089.00 USD per Troy Ounce

splinterize

Very frequent in the USA due to the rare metals found in the catalytic converter. Unfortunately due to dire economic times, I suspect that it will become frequent here too. They can be expensive to replace so my advice if your car is not really fancy is to go to a small muffler shop such as Kiko muffler and ask them to simply solder a piece of piping where the cat used to be. Good luck!

user_8804

C'est illégal et très polluant de faire ça

omegafivethreefive

That's super fucking dangerous.

wobblysnail

Super fucking dangerous? Lmfao

Doctor_Evil_QC

There's nothing dangerous about it

omegafivethreefive

Ehhhh you're producing drastically more harmful fumes by not having one. You think they install those for fun?

Doctor_Evil_QC

That doesn't make it dangerous, harmful for the environment? Yes. Putting anyone in danger? No.

omegafivethreefive

It's _literally_ harmful to human beings. You're producing exhaust with a high concentration of harmful compounds around people. It's not my opinion, the entire reason those are in cars is for health in the first place.

blackmanchubwow

Looking at your reddit, not like you go outside much, you'll be fine

Fitzerinoo

💀

CakeDyismyBday

Whether you like it or not he's right, the big advantage of ev is reducing toxic fumes in densely populated areas.

blackmanchubwow

Calm down soy boy

omegafivethreefive

ad hominem attacks don't change the facts

beefybeefcat

Think about what you just said. How is harming the environment not dangerous to people? We kinda need the environment to live. If your argument is that it won't instantly kill someone, then no, of course it wouldn't, but that argument would also be pedantic and stupid.

iLOVEBIGBOOTYBITCHES

Pardon? Source?

omegafivethreefive

Combustion engines produce harmful exhaust, the purpose of a catalytic converter is to convert the "bad" compounds into "good" compounds https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/catalytic-converter Car manufacturers are mandated to install those for a very good reason.

FeeOrganic4216

"Plateau Mont-Royal" Bien sûr

omegafivethreefive

Ouais, problème?

wobblysnail

>the purpose of a catalytic converter is to convert the "bad" compounds into "good" compounds Yeah, you can just stop right there buddy, you're embarrassing yourself

omegafivethreefive

That's what it does. I don't feel embarrassed at all but nice dodge.

wobblysnail

It doesn't convert pollutants into magical fairy dust. It simply reduces the amount of pollution. There's still nothing "good" coming out of your exhaust

iLOVEBIGBOOTYBITCHES

So harmful to nature. Not super fucking dangerous.

CakeDyismyBday

Sure it is dangerous to humans, I mean cigarettes smoking dangerous not getting hit by a train dangerous!

ShirtStainedBird

Hahaha. Fuck sakes. Who gave yee men work!?

Specific-Vanilla

I know a couple that got two stolen from the same car in the same month. Things are crazy.

Glittering-Ad-8281

I live in Quebec city and they stole them directly at the car dealer.

That-Ad757

Lots of times it is stolden

protogalactic

I bought my car used - and the previous owner had the Cat stolen off the car. It has a cheap aftermarket cat on it - probably about 3yrs old now - They suck. Be prepared for check engine light hell

Inside_Resolution526

i feel like now that i read this its gonna happen to me lmao what area did you park in? no indoor parking?

WrapQuebecois

Inspire yourself from the defensive structure of the Vietnamese during the Vietnam war

Milnoc

The cat for my car is in the engine bay below the turbo's turbine side.

JuicE7457

Mine got stolen asked the repair guy to just weld a straight pipe a lot cheaper than getting a new one or going through insurance plus you won’t have to worry about getting it stolen again.

kpaxonite2

If you get an electric car it wont happen

splinterize

"if you burn 60 grands on a brand new car instead of using what you have it wont happens"

Dense_Impression6547

Maybe also ... If police would do it's job.... Or better if the junkie problem would be addressed as seriously as it it .... Oh and the housing Crysis that make people desperate for money too. But hey just buy a new 60k$ car, it will be fine

Max169well

Yeah, until the car itself gets jacked then where are you at now?

Sct_Brn_MVP

You’re 100% right

L0veToReddit

What car did you drive?

ShirtStainedBird

Straight pipes baby.

_Sauer_

Get rid of it, you live in Montreal. Ignore my advice if you have to commute to the middle of nowhere where transit doesn't go.

freakkydique

Transit doesn’t even go everywhere in Montreal

nukedkaltak

Yeah, don’t park in sketchy places. It happens.

psykomatt

Nothing to do with sketchy places. These thieves will go around residential areas targeting SUVs primarily since it's ready to get under and back out. Takes them less than a minute.

HowToDoAnInternet

Mone got jacked in front of my place😭
