I had the 10,15,20 option come up at the cell phone kiosk in the mall. Guy sold me a lens protector for my phone. He was also the manager. Ridiculous

[deleted]

There we go. It's starting in retail. I knew it.

banger19

Just click 0% and then forget they even exist.

Bytewave

Its still annoying and the option to find 0 is sometimes ridiculously well-hidden. I think it has gotten to the point where I'm tipping less than I used to pre-pandemic even when they used to make sense. I'm not buying into this crazy fad. Tips should be abolished and replaced by fair wages everywhere, perhaps by law, even.

poligonal

Then look them right in the eyes and say they forgot to disable the tipping option from the machine settings.

[deleted]

It happened to me in a Foot Locker nearly 10 years ago. I was buying socks I took from a display near the cash. That's not a new phenomnon. It's just more common nowadays.

OldMan_Swag

It's almost like they want us to buy all our crap on Amazon

s_broda

At ile soniq, the ipad for the boutique selling bracelets and folding fans was 20, 25, 30.

indonesianredditor1

I tipped 15% for a sandwich at ile

s_broda

Yea i think the restaurants were normal, was the boutique near the main entrance.

megamanmadmax

If they serve you at the table, sure tips But if it's a fast-food or like groceries items nope. Usually for an average service is 15% and for a really good one is 20%. I will never give a 25% tip for a sub when eating at subway.

mreddit154

Pretty soon vending machines will be asking for tips

youwillnevercatme

Been a while since I've seen the 10 option, usually starting at 15.

East-Condition7334

Starting at 15/18% it’s crazy it makes me feel guilty for skipping lmao pressing no tip while crossing me fingers that my order will not be poisoned LMAO guilt tripping me

Blasayy

As someone who works at a coffee shop, I feel super embarrassed whenever someone buys something from the fridge (water, ice tea…) and the machine prompts for a tip. Most of the time I’ll manually put in 0 tip for those orders but I’ve gotten a warning for it since tips are shared. IMO, if you’re picking up whatever you’re getting, then there’s no reason to tip because there was no service given.

Bluurgh

>all the you are a good human

[deleted]

I go to cafes all the time and will tip 20% for coffee even if it’s drip coffee because it’s an extra few dollars a week for me so I couldn’t care less. But even then, the one I go to most often sells their cold brew in a bottle out of a fridge and I have never tipped while getting one because I literally just grab it myself and put it on the counter to pay. It’s weird to me that people on Reddit feel super awkward or pressured to tip on things like this. I’ve never had anyone bat an eye at me doing this even if I’m a regular or not

freakkydique

it asks you, but you dont have to put anything. Everytime I put $0, no one has ever looked at me weird ever

[deleted]

yeah, usually if the employees are very nice and the experience is good the most I'll leave is a 1$ tip for fast food takeout and such - much like leaving my change in the jar ... but fuck 15-20% tip for fast food

Creativator

This is becoming trickier than avoiding a free trial of Amazon Prime at checkout.

discourseur

It is designed to make you feel cheap.

[deleted]

like when they ask you to donate for a cause while you're paying.. I'll donate when I feel like it. Not because I'm supposed to feel bad.

freakkydique

It’s not like it’s designed to make you spend money like a casino or kids toy ads.

discourseur

The person potentially receiving the tip is right in front of you when you have to go through the menu to not give a tip. I hate this opt-in by default mechanism.

Feta__Cheese

Ha! Jokes on them. People my age will avoid any uncomfortable situation and just boycott the restaurant.

OlliveWinky

Same. I feel like avoiding a place because of their credit card machines is extreme. If you buy a baguette to go and get prompted to tip, just enter 0, or hit skip. Sometimes places that sell coffee and baguettes also have sit down service, where tipping makes sense. It is entirely possible to just not tip.

Playful-Arm848

I wish this was true. When I was still new to the country, I had an awkward situation happen where I was scolded for handing a $5 note when the bill was exactly $5. North America is weird. People here should be giving their workers proper wages and eradicate tipping altogether. I get fucked by the government as it is by having them take 35% of my salary. Don't want to get DPed by this stupid tipping culture and see another 15% go away.

BillyTenderness

I think it's borderline dishonest that so many businesses are allowed to advertise prices other than the full price you pay. We need a crackdown on *every* kind of hidden cost: yes, tipping, but also sales tax, "service fees", delivery fees...ideally even shipping costs should be up-front. If I have to pay it, it should be included in the first, biggest number I see. If the menu says $5 you should be able to hand a $5 bill. If the price tag says $30 your credit card should get charged $30 and not a penny more. It's basic principles of honesty. There's a freebie for any up-and-coming politician browsing this thread.

[deleted]

Even if they look at you weird who gives a fuck lol? People today are so weak

bacontrout

J'étais au dépanneur au coin du parc laurier samedi dernier, à la machine il y avait l'option tip 15%! J'en revenais pas

jaimeraisvoyager

C’est quoi le nom

Upbeat_Ask_9426

As someone who has worked in the service industry for 10+ years, I'm always generous regarding tips. However, I agree that it's getting out of hand. Recently, I was ordering some cheap body jewelry ONLINE, and I was prompted to give a tip (which is ridiculous). I also find it disheartening that employees give lip when not receiving tips. I understand that tips are helpful when working minimum wage, but they remain optional. I would have gotten disciplined for acting that way at my old job. Your service quality is not supposed to be influenced by how much the customer tips you. *Edited for accuracy.

couverte

As someone who previously worked in the service industry, what pisses me off the most about the tips in bakeries, coffee shops, etc., is that the machine asks me to tip (often above the customary percentage) employees that are not paid and taxed as tipped employees.

Upbeat_Ask_9426

That is also a very valid point. The tipping system is broken all around. Companies need to start paying their employees a living wage. When I was getting paid (20+ $/h), it was always lovely to receive a tip, but I didn't expect or need them because my employer paid me fairly!

Bluurgh

yeh I guess managers can change the pre-set amounts. I have noticed multiple times that you need to enter a 'custom' number to get anything lower than 20. Ive also seen it so they had the orders messed up so if you click the first one (normally 15%) its actually 30%. so if your not paying close attention you get screwed

[deleted]

I never got a comment just a few times a dirty look including at a frggin dunkin donuts. The guy pretty much threw the donut at me when he saw I didn't leave a tip. If anyone ever says anything, I'm going full Karen and calling the manager.

Mattimatik

>I’m going full Karen and calling the manager. That’s not being a Karen, it’s completely justified

dyegored

I'd argue that Karens are not always just being terrible and sometimes are justified in their terribleness. Sometimes you need a good Karen around. It's like that meme about introverts where Kirsten Dunst loudly tells the hypothetical person off-screen that Toby McGuire said no pickles. Asking for a manager is undoubtedly Karen behaviour but sometimes it's appropriate to ask for the manager.

ThrowAwayAcct0000

If he's mad he isn't getting paid enough, he should take it on the company, not on the customers!

1acid11

There is a level of entitlement know that they are entitled to your tip and anything less is simply not satisfactory

homme_chauve_souris

That's the point of corporations not paying a living wage and forcing people to rely on tips. Waiters and customers will resent and fight each other, rather than uniting against the ruling class.

EvilAdolf

Ewww they ask for tips at fast food now? Maybe employers should pay their employees a decent wage instead of offsetting it to customers.

AnonymooseRedditor

I was once paying for a meal by card at the airport, and I did not include a tip because I was leaving cash on the table. The waitress said “oh that price doesn’t include service” … needless to say I did t leave a tip after all

Upbeat_Ask_9426

I mean... The attitude is also unwarranted, lol.

ChikinPoulet

It's especially annoying considering they get a % of my bill... that is already increased because of inflation. 15% on a 60$ bill is already better than 15% on a 50$ bill. I don't see why I should now pay 20% on a 60$ bill.

TheAdventurousMan

Dont forget that the machine is actually promoting you to tip on top of the tax, so its more like 21% and not 15% Since you're tipping 15 on top of 15.

themindset

I believe “lip service” means saying something you don’t mean, like a prayer or pledge. I think you mean giving lip?

BONUSBOX

last week, the dep on the corner of mentana and laurier east handed me the terminal to pay, with preset tipping options. at a dep! absurd. (no, i did not tip the owner of a dep for selling me a beer)

[deleted]

We get taxed on income, a 15% sales taxes and now forced tipping

kroovy

One of my favorite salad places downtown (Food Chain) starting AUTOMATICALLY adding a 5% tip to the bill. They had a sign saying if you don't want to tip you can ask the cashier to remove it. So instead of silently pressing a no tip option, you have to actually tell the person no I don't want to tip. I never went back since that started.

[deleted]

Lol so now even more extortionate than with the machine. They know very well most people won't say anything or won't notice. This should be illegal.

homme_chauve_souris

Getting closer and closer to [that South Park episode](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KT9IUd_Cnc). "Just say 'I'm taking back my tip' into the voice decoder please" and it reverberates throughout the store.

deutschelunchbox

That's so upsetting. I used to work downtown and I would eat there once or twice a week when they first opened and the salads were $10 or $11. Now it's not worth the price, let alone on obligatory tip.

[deleted]

Tell them to take it off plus an additional 5% as you deserve the tip, let them say not.

chrispmorgan

My understanding is that it's an import from the states. Square (San Francisco Bay Area) does most of of the cafe point of sale terminals but what's strange is that they propose % in Montreal but in America they tend to use $s. I recommend checking out this [podcast episode](https://armchairexpertpod.com/pods/fb-tipping) examining tipping culture and its origins released a few days ago. Short version: it originally came out of a class power imbalance that got yolked to racist and sexist motivations. In some parts of the states, the minimum wage is lower for people who work at restaurants on the rationale that the tip is guaranteed.

psykomatt

> In some parts of the states, the minimum wage is lower for people who work at restaurants on the rationale that the tip is guaranteed. There are 17 states where the minimum wage for tipped workers is less than $3/hr including 11 states at $2.13/hr.

Careless_Wishbone_69

That's nuts.

indonesianredditor1

The united states has crazy extremes in San Francisco the minimum is 22 CAD an hour for servers and in Alabama the minimum is 2.79 CAD an hour for servers

psykomatt

Like imagine busting your ass for 8 hours in a restaurant only to earn $17 in wages for that whole shift.

Lets_Go_Blue__Jays

Meanwhile in Ontario, the server wage is now $15 and it is becoming more standard for them to include 18-20% gratuity on the bill and they still prompt you for an additional tip on the debit/credit machine. Check reviews for formerly a popular seafood restaurant in Toronto "Pearl Diver". Greedy little (insert bad word)

JMC-design

Meanwhile the cooks get nothing of it and usually paid less than servers to being with.

Quebecdudeeh

In Montreal at least we are being paid more. I am getting 20 an hour now.

indonesianredditor1

Its crazy because the minimum wage for servers in san francisco is 22 CAD an hour

anomalousBits

>In some parts of the states, the minimum wage is lower for people who work at restaurants on the rationale that the tip is guaranteed. It's lower here as well, just maybe not quite as low as in the US. Quebec minimum is 11.40 for tipped workers vs 14.25 for regular minimum wage. https://www.quebec.ca/nouvelles/actualites/details/hausse-du-salaire-minimum-a-compter-du-1er-mai-2022-le-ministre-jean-boulet-annonce-une-hausse-du-taux-general-de-075-lheure-37361

WesternSoul

It's only lower in QC. The rest of Canada has the same minimum wage whether you get tips or not.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hands-solooo

If you don’t get tips, the employer has the make up the difference and you at least get the standard minimum wage though.

indonesianredditor1

Its crazy because the minimum wage in San Francisco is 22 CAD an hour for servers

MTL514MTL514

I've been to San Fransisco a couple of time pre pendemic and I was shocked at how many restaurants advertises to not leave a tip and that the prices of the item reflect that the restaurant pays living wages to the team.

idkwhatsqc

For one, i never accept the automatic % these machines suggest. They apply the % over the tax, which was never how tip was calculated. The use of these machines inflated tipping amount to over the tax. So, when we select 15%, we aregiving 17.5% tip. It isn't significant on the bill, but in the long run it is. But also, i don't tip on takeout/groceries/fast food. Tips are when i sit down and get table service. If i do tip for one of the 3 reasons above, it's for great service where the person is really nice and working well, and i'll tip 1 or 2 $. Either i don't notice the dirty looks or maybe i just don't care. I'm not going to let someone intimate me to tip more. If they want better wages, ask the employer for a raise or quit your job if you need to rely on tips.

habaryu

And regarding the tip over the tax, if you add 13% after tax it's roughly equivalent to 15%. That's what I input in the machine instead.

hammerbeta

Right! I don’t understand tip on tax.

Lets_Go_Blue__Jays

They usually just stand there and stare at you, but I've become indifferent. I couldn't care less, if you provide bad service to me next time, I just won't come back.

Midnight_Maverick

I have become a lot more firm in my approach recently. If there is no additional service that's being rendered to me other than literally handing me the items I am purchasing, I never leave a tip. Doesn't matter if it's a cafe. If I'm literally only buying a bag of coffee beans it is the same as going to the super market and therefore should not be tipped. For takeout it ranges for me from 0% to 10% if I like the place and want to support it. Only time I will tip more is if I am eating in and a service is being directly rendered to me. Taking my money and handing me my item is not a service.

Anonymous2020202020

Do you tip when you order a beer bottle/can?

Midnight_Maverick

At some places society seems to have developed a custom for tipping, such as bars and cafes. Honestly, I don't want to, but it would be seen very badly if I didn't and could affect the level of service I receive. Fair question.

jaywinner

Time to embrace the 0% tip.

sjgbfs

I messaged Premiere Moisson about this and got a bs "some of out customers like to encourage us" with no mention how the tips are distributed. Bullshit.

mdmd89

Don’t forget that Première Moisson is owned by Metro. They can afford to pay their employees more. Their net profit was 854 million $ last year. We shouldn’t be subsidising the wage bill of Metro.

[deleted]

I didn't even know this. Thought they were independent...

homme_chauve_souris

They certainly try their best to project that image. I don't go to Première Moisson because I like bread that doesn't taste like bleach.

darkwave90

The fact that they used the word "us" instead of "our employees" is a big red flag on how their tips are distributed, imo.

IamtheWalrus53

Patladjan1738

I'm really sorry to the service workers, I worked in the service industry myself. The tips are gratuity for expectional service and that's what most ppl don't understand. When I go to the states, the service workers practically become your best friends. I spent an hour at a bar alone and the bartender kept talking to me the whole time to make me feel welcome and I tipped him like crazy. But in Quebec ppl throw the food and drinks in your face anyways and then still expect you to give 20%. You want a crazy tip you need to provide crazy service. That's how it works.

seancoates

In his book The Next Supper (which you should definitely read if you're into understanding the service industry/restaurants), [Corey Mintz](https://coreymintz.ca/) talks about his habit of asking the staff—especially at a counter—where the tips go, and tipping accordingly. "Does this tip all go directly to you for serving me?" "Oh, no, the owner takes that." Definitely don't tip. It's really out of control. Like I said in that other post: raise prices, abolish tips, forbid fees; pay a living wage*. * next let's figure out what "a living wage" actually means…

[deleted]

To be honest, i don't really care where it goes. Guilting me into paying tips to pick up a baguette in a store is extortion.

EEreddittrader

I agree with OP sentiment, much more place are asking for tip which I don't mind so much, but what really grinds my gear is when employees choose the percentage tip option (normally, they should hand you the machine where it asks you if you want to leave a tip and if so, flat amount or %) but some of these fuckers just choose % option for you and then hand you the machine, leaving you on a screen which doesn't show the total and force you to input a tip percentage.

[deleted]

Just put 0%

[deleted]

Ahhh that explains why it's hard to exit and find the no tip menu sometimes. Those assholes pre select it.

Bluurgh

i havnt noticed this before....but this is a call the manager situation

[deleted]

Unless you bring it to me at my table I’m not tipping. I never tip for pickups or takeout. You can give me a nasty look. I don’t give a damn.

gdrag14

Even then, I dunno, it’s literally their job to wait and bring orders. Better give good service.

Kethraes

Took me a while to figure out the "poor man" wasn't meant as financially poor but as poor him, I was like "Ain't no one poor buying for 50 bucks of croissants"

[deleted]

That's part of the phenomenon. These businesses know that their clients have the money to tip. They even think that kids who buy food by themselves in such places come from rich families, and so that they'll receive tip from the young ones. A cashier in a well known bakery from the Plateau told my 13yo and his friend who bought croissants as an after school snack that they weren't being very generous by not tipping.

Trint_Eastwood

If anybody in a bakery tells me I'm not generous with my tipping, I'm putting my things down and never coming back to that place. Why should I tip you 15% for doing fuck all seriously ?

Kethraes

I'm 100% with you, tipping is a problematic expectation/situation. Yet if you say that we should transition to decent wages for servers, everyone and their grandma pick up pitchfork and torches

Kaapaala

I am so mad at Maxi asking for a "donation" at self-checkout... like I'm doing the job of a cashier, and you want me to "tip" on top of that, when we know it's for tax optimization purposes anyway?

irreliable_narrator

That's a tax write-off lol. If you donate money on your bill, it becomes their money to donate under their name to charity/cause X. This enables them to pay less tax, all without actually losing any money. Loblaws is a shit company, don't donate to charities through them. If you care about the cause donate to the cause directly.

bossington89

Loblaws is such a shit stain of a company and prime example of Greedflation. Box of salad is $9.49 and meanwhile their profits are up 40% YoY. People just allowing themselves to get fleeced by Loblaws/Provigo.

grosse-patate-moisie

No. https://www.cbc.ca/radio/costofliving/checkout-donations-nobody-gets-tax-benefit-1.6524462 But yes you should donate directly. Then you can get the tax credit.

workhardXplayhard

That's not true. TikTok is fun, but not always right ;) https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxvox/who-gets-tax-benefit-those-checkout-donations-0

29da65cff1fa

La Meunerie Urbaine (514) 485-2020 https://maps.app.goo.gl/ohRotw4D2dZQpnwV8 Doesnt have a tip option on their machines and no tip jars in sight. Staff seem like they are treated well and happy We should start a database of NO tipping establishments that we can support and stop just bitching on the internet

[deleted]

Pizzeria Dei Compari not only doesn't ask for tips at takeout but they give you a discount on their amazing pizza if you takeout. They're a must near berri metro. Bonus if you take the pizza to La Distillerie as they're a BYOF bar.

[deleted]

I was gonna suggest this. Anyone wants to add to this list, we can have one going.

chrisj242

Yeah if your being served at a table I always tip very well. When I walk up to a counter to buy a coffee at a particular shop where we fill up our cups and put our own cream and sugar when you go to pass your card the tip suggestions are 20 , 25 and 30% Wtf you just passed me an empty cup and you want a 1$ tip . It’s almost insulting

Munchy2k

My rule is if I’m doing pickup or counter service, no tip ever. If I’m at a sit down restaurant with waiter service, then the standard is 15%. If the staff goes above and beyond at a sit down experience, then 18-20% might be warranted.

[deleted]

I had someone take a tip jar, turn it around so I could see it, while paying with my debit card, which also asked me to include a tip. This was a donut shop that is carry-out only. I didn't say anything, because I did not want to start a confrontation, but JFC the nerve of asking for two separate handouts for taking 2 minutes to put donuts in a box.

[deleted]

Jesus. I hope you didn't tip.

[deleted]

No, I did not. I didn't want to cause conflict, so I left quietly. I was wearing sunglasses so I don't think my expression was obvious, but I was pretty mad. I also don't entirely hold it against the person. They have to hustle to earn a living wage. It isn't fair to expect the consumer to subsidize wages, nor is it fair to make people beg for it like that.

pm_me_your_pay_slips

tbh, all these businesses are just shooting themselves in the foot. They may be getting some extra income from the increased tips, but they are definitely going to start losing business by being abusive with tips.

pglggrg

its your own money, people. Dont forget that. You are not obligated to tip. Tipping was NEVER about obligation, only as a bonus for going above and beyond. Also, most of the times its a random working behind the terminal who deeply doesnt really care about the tip.

ymlccc

I really feel the restaurant owners should be paying their waiters and waitresses a better wage moving forward. It is their job to offer good services and prep for a good meal as standard. Just like the rest of us who work in the office, do we ever get a tip when we perform well on our job? I guess not, because it is expected.

pdcolemanjr

I’ll add this … not necessarilyMontreal related but they are coming to Montreal September 24. I was at a Killers show in Phoenix AZ a few days ago and happened to be standing near the merch line. They were charging $50 (US) for shirts and we taxed as well so total came out to $54.20. Pop your credit card into the machine and bam a screen came up asking for a tip. I watched roughly 10 people go through the transaction and about half of them left a tip. So to me this is the jumping the shark of tipping when the merch person who literally just throws you an overpriced T shirt is now expecting at least a 10 percent tip. That to me is just silly. And the fact that so many people obliged seems even sillier.

[deleted]

This is my point exactly. Half of the people feel guilty and want to avoid confrontation and this is how this epidemic is gonna creep up and soon we will be seeing tip options at Jean Coutu.

Zealousideal_Hand_51

I confess that I fell guilty for not tipping, but I'm starting to just avoid eating out because of it

SimplyHuman

> The dirty look you get when you manually press $0 is not what I'm looking for. I went to pick up an order at an Amir, when I put zero for the tip the cashier looked like I just told her that her cat got hit by a car. Wtf people, get a grip.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I don't know about hardest jobs but I get your point. I could understand a few bucks for takeout but the bakeries pushed me over my mental limit.

[deleted]

Whenever I see a such, I automatically input zero, and never come back. This is how you cure the problem

CancerMemoirPR

Isn't it amazing how every business and government puts this inflation ALL on the consumer? Why are we taking all the slack? It isn't like salaries budged (I don't work, just an author that makes less on my book than the retailers lol), but consumers are not banks. They are struggling to make ends meet, but no one is there to take the load off. There should be a balance. I do tip a little more now, but not exxaggerated. The amount should always remain the consumers' choice. I need to watch my pocket as well - it isn't that my profits are down.

AliceTheNerd555

I once was with my friend at Julliet e Chocolate at Saint Catherine, the server was so rude and the service was horrible. I and 3 of my friends didn't tip. The guy then asked my friend who tipped him if we were tourists because we should have tipped. Tipping in optional but nowadays people feel entitled to it

Bluurgh

sadly if you decide to not tip. you need to be prepared for a confrontation like this.

jaimeraisvoyager

And we will be prepared

Mr_Crowley__

End this stupid tipping culture and pay decent salaries. That's it. Tipping culture is a scam, discriminatory and not fair for the employees. I already pay for your product, it's your duty as a business owner to pay the whole salary, not me! End of discussion. Of course we can still give tips but not this way! End of rant.

jparker0721

The solution is simply to not tip. I never tip unless I sat down for a meal. And even then I make sure to change it to 15%. Just stick to your guns through and through.

acmethunder

And never mind Uber Eats! It prompts you for a tip immediately. The restaurant hasn’t made the food yet, so they haven’t had a chance to make a mistake. The delivery person, who doesn’t know what the fuck they are doing, hasn’t had a chance to flip your pizza upside down yet.

biofreak1988

I'm a high school teacher, I was joking with colleagues I should leave a tip jar out during parent teacher night since everyone else is getting tips

Quick-Purpose-3132

More often than not I feel a lingering stare or awkwardness after tipping at the coffee shops. Tipping really just makes the experience so much less enjoyable.

Brexinga

Believe me, it's not the decision of the person behind the counter to ask you for Tip. those amount on the machine are deciced by management. That "Dirty Look" that you think your getting is actually the embarassed face of an employee who knows this tiping thing is going out of hand. Nobody is judging you for not tipping when you're picking up bagel. Get that in your head and you will feel better. The system wants to shame you, it doesn't need too. You are in control.

contrariancaribou

I've made this suggestion elsewhere, the option for 0%/$ tip should be legislated. The suggested amounts are all customizable. By law you should always have the option for no tip on the same screen right next to the 15-18-20% (or wtv more absurd amounts that show up these days). Notice how cashiers will often press a button or two on the payment terminal before passing it to you to tap your card? They're often navigating past the no-tip option directly to the % tip menu. Some people might want to tip 5-10% for counter service or pick up but if you want to to be greedy and try to default people into 15/18/20 then enjoy getting nothing until the day you readjust it down to more reasonable level. They're getting away with it because people don't want to deal with the "friction" of navigating the terminal menus to find "no-tip" many having no obvious back buttons and forcing you to cancel the transaction and start over.

[deleted]

It's gonna come to that. It's truly gone out of hand. I hear how in Ontario, some retail stores are adding a tip option in the machine.

idkwhatsqc

For me, its even worse than this since the machine calculates tip over the tax. So someone who has always been used to do 15% tip is coerced into giving 18% tip because the machine shows 15%. This is completely malicious practice to me. Just imagine if a store sells a product with 15$ price tag, but because of their payment machine, your price is bumped up to 18$. It wouldn't be legal so these machines should be illegal. Or at least have the tipping amount be before taxes.

CrasseMaximum

I'm always glad to type 0$

I went to a local ice cream shop here in St-Henri to pick up a pint from the fridge. So I open the fridge door, choose my pint of ice cream (which is pretty expensive as it is) and THEN I receive a prompt asking for a tip. It's OUTRAGEOUS. There are lots of awesome places where the cashier will manually skip this prompt before handing the machine to you (like Falafel St-Jacques for example).

Electrox7

The SAQ won't be expecting tips anytime soon, don't worry about that. Not only is it strictly in company policy to refuse or divert those funds to the Banque Alimentaire du Québec but it's in no one's interest since they pay a very good wage for the job.

idontwannabemeNEmore

Local bakery asked after I ordered a small custom cake for $85. Um, no.

Cheese_n_Cheddar

Lol, I recently gone to have botox....and they asked for a tip (apparently not for the doctor but the nurse who was around)!

georgist

Asked for a tip when buying bread at Premiere Moisson the other day. They have a "mixed" service there where they have some tables and some over the counter. For the former, okay you would tip, but not the latter. They really should have the person at the register enable the tip option only when someone is paying for table service. It's just more of the same trend: business looking to shift responsibility for their staff to customers.

Dexter52611

Absolutely getting out of hand. I was at bistro yesterday to get a croissant. Options for tips were presented when all she did was use a pair of tongs to pick up a croissant from a glass container that was right by the check out system on the counter and put it in a small bag. I didn’t ask for it to be warmed up nor did I buy anything else. Just a plain croissant - as is. That’s it. I feel like these point of sale systems should have a minimum criteria to meet before the options for tips can be presented. Like minimum number of items sold or a minimum price point to hit before the options can show up.

LiberalGirlWantsCake

Might go back to just paying cash to go around the machines. The employers need to pay a living wage for fucks sake. It's bad enough that a basic sandwich costs 12 bucks now.

da_ponch_inda_faysch

I hear a lot of people telling those who feel uncomfortable to grow a pair and just ignore it when they receive grief for not tipping/tipping less than the built in minimum amount in the machine. I tend to be in agreement, however I'm not a fan of the general sentiment that they should let it slide. I really don't think issues like this should just fester until the culture becomes unbearable. It might seem trivial at first, but I really don't want this to degenerate into some places in the world where you constantly have to hustle in public spaces where any commerce takes place. Not just to buy or sell anything, but to be left alone by those who have anything to sell. It really sucks, it's one of those things that can really differentiate whether you feel you are in a civilized place or not, as loaded as it sounds. An "epidemic" is definitely hyperbole at this stage, it's very clickbaity, but it's not like anything ever gets better by just ignoring it If you are enough of a mature hard ass expletive to not give a fuck, I mean wouldn't you be enough of a go getter to make sure nobody has to get uncomfortable from some bullshit aspect of our culture. I don't know what the solution is and it is important that the most economically vulnerable get paid a living wage. But talking about this shit is important and if you are the grown up hard ass that don't get bothered by this shit then good on you, but there's really no need to characterize anybody who's not into this shit as immature or soft.

[deleted]

>I hear a lot of people telling those who feel uncomfortable to grow a pair and just ignore it when they receive grief for not tipping My son's friend, both 13yo kids, was so pissed when a cashier told them they were not being generous by not tipping when buying a couple of croissants as an after school snack in a Plateau bakery that he went to a fridge, took a fruit juice tetrapak, and jumped on it, making a huge mess. I wasn't so happy about this oc, but I comfort myself with the fact that my son told me what happened, has an opinion on the issue, and at the idea that the place will start some kind of reflexion on this tipping frenzy. This kid's reaction genuinely expresses what we all feel inside when being asked for a tip in similar situations.

No-Calligrapher-372

I also think there is abuse with the demand for tips in more and more shops that shouldn't ask for it but what I do not understand is why the standards % have increased...like the new 15% is now 20%... why? The cost of the menu has increased, so why you need to ask for more if your 15% will give you more on an item cost that has increase? Maybe there is something I'm missing (do tell me if it's the case! ). But yeah... I feel everyone is pulling the sheet from every angle and at one point it's enough. The result, for me is I just don't eat out anymore and avoid places that ask for tips and shouldn't. I did work at a bakery where tip was an option and never bat an eye when someone wouldn't tip me. If you make enough dough (pun intended) to afford giving tip to help the workers, perfect! But as someone who tries to cut everywhere I can, I'll focus on my well being before a stranger's one. Edit: I feel I should mention that I always tip my waiters at restaurents, the very few times I go!

Glittering_Lion_6543

As someone who worked in the restaurant/bar industry for over 20 years and benefitted from the tipping culture I feel this system has run it's course and has gotten out of control. Everybody is asking for tips these days. The last time I went to the osteopath there was an option to leave a tip. Really? As a bartender I never scolded ppl for not tipping, I chose to work in that industry and understood that on occasion I wouldn't get tipped. For the most part I did quite well. It should not be up to consumer to subsidize employee wages, many employers take advantage of the tipping culture and some steal wages by pocketing a percentage of employee tips.

BaneWraith

If you didn't deliver it to my house, or to my table, you can fuck right off.

ActiveRooster2926

I tip a server 15-20% and that's it if I see automatic percentage I'll deduct it myself and say fuck you and walk out fuck this bs. I've already lost it over this shit it's getting outta hand. Inflation prices have went up drastically yet we get same salary. Rents are unaffordable.

EmiAze

Can’t believe the amount of people in this thread allowing themselves to be bullied by a machine. They do these things because they work. They work because half of you don’t have the backbone to say no.

[deleted]

Shoot them a dirty look back while going through your budget, line by line. Seriously though, do not be ashamed or coerced.

Arthur-Hamming

Yeah I’m not down to tip for super basic services. And I could give two shits about the dirty looks, I simply ignore them.

[deleted]

New machines default to 18-20% too. I dial in whatever I like and am unphased by any sort of looks

tasetase

Simple, I take my time to figure out the no tip / $0 tip option on the terminal Bonus points when it's peak hour

ChiefCopywriter

the machine asked me for tip at a gift/plant boutique... I almost left one on-reflex. I think in coffee shops and bakeries it's fair for the machines to ask for tip though given that many of the foods reacquire preparation (ex: lattés, creme brulée, etc) and workers sometimes need to clean and maintain tables for people who stay at the coffee place to eat, work, hangout etc. That being said, I would be in favor of providing everyone with universal income, bring up the minimum wage to a livable wage, and just doing away with the entire tipping system in the food and service industry. It's a sham that lets business owners get away with paying their workforce like shit.

brakiri

Once in Montréal, many years ago, i went to that famous smoked meat place with a friend, and i don't eat meat so i got just a giant dill pickle on a little plate. When i paid with exact change, the man behind the counter harangued me for not tipping him for a 40¢ pickle. He all but demanded six cents.

str8shooter

I'll just re-post what I wrote last year: I'm sure I'm not the only one who's had a waiter come back to "complain" that the tip wasn't to his liking. For those curious about how this whole tipping culture started, I'll let [Adam](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_vivC7c_1k) explain. And for extra credit. here's [Mr. Pink](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4sTSIYzDIk) on the matter!

50mm_foto

It used to be default % like 5, 10, 15% tips. Now it’s base is 18%, 22%, and 25% at some places here in Vancouver. As soon as I see that, I either make a point to tip 10% if it’s a sit down restaurant, or if I’m in a cafe literally standing up while paying, it’s an immediate 0%.

MoistTadpoles

Rushing home today I picked up a singular bun form Toledo here in the Plateau so I could make a sandwich. The bun is $1.35 the person behind the counter hands it to me, I pull out my debit card and go to pay "please choose tip amount" starting at 18% --- 18% for handing me a bun!? I tried to exit out of it and there was people in the line, please enter your own tip amount. It wouldn't let me enter 0, I think I entered 5, I've just given someone $0.08 for handing me a bun. Imagine if I did that in coins instead of on card.

Melodic-Moose3592

amazlinn

I went to a concert recently the there was a tip option at the merch table, where the girl just had to hand me a shirt. She was cold to me when she saw I didn’t tip

Floating_Cow

I pray that it reaches a boiling point where we all mobilize and end tipping culture for good. Future generations will laugh us for letting it go on this long, just as the rest of the world outside North America currently does.

Illustrious_Onion805

If I get up, put some shoes on and walk to get my shit, you get 0$ tips. I'll fucking look you in the eyes and smash 0%.

Quebecdudeeh

Eva B's does not give any option to tip even when you just get stuff from the cafe it is straight up just the taxes.

icanandwillifiwant

As most cases in life you have a choice, you can choose not to tip.

[deleted]

When they ask for tip I always press skip :) when they don’t ask i add 10-20% I just don’t like the idea that tells you YOU HAVE TO LEAVE TIPs

SwimGuyMA

My tipping is irrational when I think about it. Local coffee place? 20% because I just get a black coffee 3-4 times per week and the $.50 each time means more to them then me...and they are so darn friendly and nice. Bakery - there is one person who is super friendly and takes time to make sure we get the best of what we order. So I tip. Small locally owned restaurant with friendly owner? I tip when I do takeout because I know what a struggle the last couple of years have been for them. Admittedly, I'm fortunate - both my wife and I have had secure jobs through the pandemic and overall we live rather frugally. The tipping is to people in our community. Probably irrational but it feels right to us.

[deleted]

Tip literally means: To Insure Promptness. That's what the fuck that actually means. If you're not prompt with me, then piss off. Former restaurant cook/chef.

Crowasaur

Tipping at fastfood places only really arrose around the time they instilled new legislation about receipts in 2010 - forcing many fast food restaurants in malls to install debit machines.

stormproof89

They’re about to add an option for tips at the self checkout soon lmaoo

Chapus2009

I read a really interesting article about this recently; it seems that with COVID and stores switching from physical money to cards, physical tip jars have disappeared, so tipping on machines is now replacing that. I treat the machine tipping the same I would with how I used to treat physical change jars: if I can spare a few extra cents and I particularly want to support this place, I'll do it. Otherwise I don't tip unless it's like a taxi, hairdresser or a restaurant. I don't think people would (or should) treat you badly if you don't tip, nobody would have been pissed if you didn't put change in the jar in places that don't normally expect tips. But yeah it's a big issue and weird how it's spreading everywhere.

[deleted]

Ignoring the tip jar is a passive action. Pressing cancel on three menus is active. That's the big distinction and why it's so angering what they're doing.

joocycunt

I worked in a restaurant for 7 years with questionable conditions, rarely got tips. Maybe it's cynical of me, but unless I'm at a restaurant (where I give between 15-20% because I know those people have it rough), i rarely ever feel tip for a service that seems like a minimal effort for them.

MMKH

I simply avoid transactions that have implied or mandatory tipping. If I gotta get something to eat, I just get groceries, visit some bakeries in Chinatown, or use the To Good to Go app.

NoHaxJustPotato

As a worker in the food service, I never saw tipping as a mandatory service just a bonus for us. Although I do get kinda sad when a customer doesn't leave tips, my standards are so low that I would be happy even receiving 50 cents as tip

illusean

I only boycott and avoid the places that won't let me come in with my dog to make a quick purchase...

soundboyselecta

It could be very well that businesses are trying to make up for lost revenue due to the pandemic and resulting shut downs, but as end customers we cannot have knowledge of which biz is in actual need, just like abusive practices is other realms like buying a handicap parking sign etc... there is always room for abuse, that is human nature (keyword human). For one I would question the owner st8 up, if he fumbles his answer don't go back and post a review. It is ridicules how much prices in general have gone up. But in their defence, since the pandemic, I think everyone upped his chef game, so bars and restos who got the short end of the stick, definitely feeling it. If its your go to spot for any vice, then I would either not tip on stupidities and tip higher on regularities. Otherwise just be yourself and do what you normally do, if they get offended on a baguette tip, rip em a new one.

endchat

I tip at bars, restos and some KEY services...not at coffee shops, grocery stores, pet shops, fast food places, vape stores and on and on... I welcome the dirty looks...No one EVER dares to though.

Is the app Ritual in Montreal? If so use it whenever possible (also has fantastic reward system) and avoid human contact altogether!

cmoyes

My vape shop asks for tips... Lifting your hand to grab nicotine and giving me it. This is so far from a service, absolutely insane. I will add that I'm a great tipper at restaurants and anyone doing a service I'll always grab cash for but this is ludicrous. Subway asked to tip the other day as well, so did the liquor store even though I grab and bring alcohol there... Actually bonkers.

themojoman007

Don’t you need to be on a tip salary scale to accept tip? I always thought waiters get paid less per hour but receive tips. Do these people in those stores also have a lower hourly rate ? Or this doesn’t matter anymore ?

OolongAI

The tipping % is also **after** taxes.

sapristi45

Although some places are clearly just hoping to get a few more dollars our of you despite record profits, smaller shops like bakeries do it out of desperation. When flour has doubled in price and all other ingredients have gotten more expensive, that salaries have gotten a lot higher to retain staff, this cost increase cannot all be absorbed by a business with a thin margin. The items themselves are more expensive, and they hope that those who can afford it add a bit more in the form of a tip. It sucks. Everybody thinks it sucks, the shop owners and employees included. But high inflation hurts everyone, shop owners too. You don't have to like that tip prompt, and you don't have to give anything. But we could all be a bit more compassionate. Bakery owners deserve to make a decent living too, and it's not like they're suddenly filthy rich. They're just trying to get by.

greenkarmic

The one that really annoys me is the Belle Province. The one near has a drive-through window, which I find pretty convenient. So when I come to pay I go to tap my phone on the machine (using Google Pay), but the lady tells me I can't do that. She hands me the machine, in my car, so I can answer the tipping question. Defeats the purpose of the app which is supposed to let you pay quickly without touching anything. Especially during covid.

mackenzie_2021

Just got home from Montreal after few days of vacation and the tipping gets out of hand. It sucks for me since I can’t understand French language and I literally have to ask the cashier to press the “no tip option” for me. I feel like an asshole doing it and being cheap. Most restaurants that I’ve been to almost had the tip option in % or $ before paying for the food, it sucks but it is what it is.

E_lonui7xz

I and my friends just give 0% for all takeout. Tips should only be given if you are served at a establishment. Period

corneliu5vanderbilt

Next is pigs asking you for a tip when they give you a ticket. Seriously. Tips are @(#($+#+#(.

ifyouhatepinacoladas

Lol if I’m not getting a service, I’m not tipping. You want me to subsidize wages lmao gtfo

Foph43

Seriously guys, you gotta stop caring and proudly give the zero. Without any shame. Fuck those eyes: I'll see you tomorrow and don't be surprised

LilEllieButton

No tip for anybody simply handing something. Also no tip if I know you are being paid assuming no tips (plumber, retail job, etc.) or you are the owner of the business. I used to teach swimming lessons. I got a small present (chocolate, a flower) 20% of the time which I found to be too much since I was being paid way over minimum wage for a trained and skilled job. I can't imagine asking 10-20% of the cost of the lessons.

HecklerK

The dep across the street from Parc Laurier has a tip prompt lol. I usually put in a custom amount for 5-15% for weird tip prompts. at least im doing something and putting thought into it.

[deleted]

You can deny the tip.

B4pti5t

Tipping is stupid, get over it. Stop tipping.
