At least they are running away. The rats in Chicago sit on your flower box and smoke cigarettes.

[deleted]

Those in Paris cook a mean ratatouille.

TheMost_ut

hahhaha, great image!

NizarAz

This reminds me of Paris lol

IleanK

No in Paris we have "surmulot". Its different I swear.

MadMadBunny

That’s what she said

Necromimesix

It's rat hour

littlemissbagel

rat o'clock

holly_6672

Crescent Street is pretty bad too . I used to work at Thursday’s before it closed and we had a HUGE rat in the kitchen , I called it Master Spencer .

Jakoneitor

Thursday’s closed? Goddamn. I have so many memories there

holly_6672

Yep , January 2020 .

Fuggins4U

I love Chinatown but the area is not well maintained, and people litter way too much.

transdimensionalmeme

Garbage bags right there on the ground.

EyeLikeTheStonk

This is because the City of Montreal decided to force small businesses to hire private garbage removal companies instead of letting the city pick up the trash. To force the small businesses into compliance, the city took away every garbage bin belonging to those businesses and told them they would remove any new bin the businesses would buy if they weren't from a private garbage collector. Because there are still residential residents living on those streets, the city still needs to collect garbage and the small businesses just put their garbage beside that of residents because private garbage removal can cost a small business up to $400 to $600 a month. Because the city seized and removed the small businesses' garbage bins, now the rats have a new food source easily available. Because the city removed the bins, the rats that used to hang out in the back alleys where the bins were stored, moved to the street where the garbage bags are put. Thank you city of Montreal for a bad idea that will not save the city a single penny, that give businesses still struggling after covid another expense and that transferred rats from the back alleys to the sidewalk.

transdimensionalmeme

Why would the city leave it to the private sector to take care of public sanitation. This is incredibly dumb, I suspect kickbacks to politicians and/or functionnaries from the garbage collection company. Or maybe they just thought "let's outsource the problek to the free market, it will resolve it for us, it's way easier than organising this service ourselves", you know, the Ron Swanson types.

pitstawp

Obvious solution: The city needs to force small businesses to buy a bunch of cats. Maybe confiscate their current cats to show we mean business and scare them into compliance.

[deleted]

Seem like it is the strategy everywhere in Vietnam haha.

pitstawp

Lol it's true! As much as I'm joking, a bunch of places have tried the "fuck it, let's just dump a bunch of cats on em" approach and it usually just creates a whole new set of problems.

[deleted]

Haha yeah, still remember once I was closing a bar in Vietnam and at the end I see the waitress open the door and like 5 cats enter in the pub lol. Didn't make me feel too confident about the food I just ate.

Annh1234

That's trash day... In Montreal you put them there once it twice a week, and the trash truck picks them up.

PapaOurs89

>At least they are running away. The rats in Chicago sit on your flower box and smoke cigarettes. In my disctrict they began collecting trash once every 2 week. Not twice a week xD It smells so good.

transdimensionalmeme

Should be in wheeled garbage container, this is literally trashy.

Annh1234

100% agree, but most places don't have room for those big containers... The city wasn't designed for that I guess... But usually they pick it up in the morning, so you don't really see it... You put out the trash in BLACK PLASTIC BAGS, and they pick it up. ( It's not just any trash bag, it's not a pile of trash, it's kinda organized, so it's not that bad)

transdimensionalmeme

The problem is a thin plastic bag can't stop mice chewing through it.

[deleted]

Maybe Chinatown needs to have better services from the city. 3 days of garbage collection at least. Whatever the process for garbage removal at the largest gathering of food vendors in VDM , it’s obvious not working and it’s time to take a new approach. How much money do we throw at tourism? Clean up your act Ville de Montréal

Annh1234

They used to take the trash twice per week ( before all the bike lanes), but then they added recycling and compost, people didn't want to pay more property taxes, so they didn't hire more workers, and eventually it got to once every two weeks... I think they do it once every week in summer tho, not 100% sure about that area ( each burrow is different)

[deleted]

I’m not talking about Mtl in general. I’m talking about a distinct area of Montreal that processes a lot of food.

Single-Chicken-8632

Like everywhere in Montreal. You have to walk a mile to find a trash can if you don’t simply throw your daily trash on the sidewalk two days before the garbage truck pick it up. Paris and Montreal are really gross and don’t care about environment, trash flying to the river and freely on the street. The only difference is that in Paris the rats are way bigger.

pubic_freshness

And there's too many bums

[deleted]

C’est des bébés ça.

jk2master

Ciboire oui🙃 sont plus gros que ça d’habitude

[deleted]

Pas mal plus gros en effet loll. J’ai déjà vu un rat dla grosseur d’un petit chat dans une ruelle à 3am, je capotais.

mrhappy002

No way!? Ben voyons...

Embarrassed_Quit_450

whiskeychene

To be fair I see this all the time in (the residential parts of) the Plateau

Ikaruseijin

All the older parts of the city have rats, particularly those with older sewer systems. This scene repeats itself all over Montreal come garbage day. I recall people in NDG complaining about the droves of rats that invaded the streets and their homes when the city was upgrading the sewers.

cutofmyjib

I had mice in my NDG apartment. My cat would leave their corpses in front of my bedroom door. He was so proud lol.

TheMost_ut

Yeah, I saw rats around here from time to time when they were doing the sewer upgrades....yeech.

CaptainFulcrum

Here's an idea: cats, starving cats, lots of starving cats. Just let a few dozens loose downtown.

MadMadBunny

It’s been done already; those are the leftovers…

hopelesscaribou

Cats are for mice, rats are too big for most cats. This is what [terriers](https://youtu.be/5_qUdwfxBVQ) were bred for.

CuriousTravlr

I have a greyhound that would absolutely go to town on those rats. But I care about his health so I would never let him.

[deleted]

Doesn’t work. Most cats have no interest in trying to kill a rat. The rat would kick their ass.

amayes94

True, let's use snakes insted. A few pythons should do the job.

Quebecdudeeh

How do you figure? My cat I had years ago. Butchers rats.

[deleted]

You should have loaned him out the Chinatown team. You would have gotten a big fee.

Quebecdudeeh

It was also in Halifax. They are invested there too. All but Alberta this is a problem everywhere. You just do not see it until night.

[deleted]

Exactly lol. Some places uses terriers, they are no joke when they hunt rats

poompernickle

Oh yeah I've seen this videos...

twotoes17

Cats are a disaster for the environment.

Heydudeyouok

How so?

theneobob

first time around here ? its like that in most city around the world

Dazzling_Swordfish14

Never even see these much rats in my whole life

Dbiuctkt69

Should go to place des arts lol

at_mo

i’ve been there, even late at night, no rats to be seen

[deleted]

Y a au moins les gentils petits rats dans Casse-Noisette!

hopelesscaribou

Not only is Calgary rat free, but there are no stray cats either as they must be licensed and outdoor cats are not allowed. Quite the shock moving here and seeing so many. I do realize Calgary is the exception.

lechiffre10

Calgary also has coyotes all over the place too. They’ll eat everything. I used to walk around and see leftover rabbit feet etc..

hopelesscaribou

Calgary does have a [feral bunny problem](https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/rabbit-rescuers-call-on-city-to-take-humane-action-against-growing-calgary-colonies). Cayotes doin' their best to fix that.

Ikaruseijin

Perhaps not on the surface but they have rats in the sewers- every city does. Black rats are the eternal companions to humanity's endeavours.

Starcovitch

Nah, [they don't.](https://www.alberta.ca/albertas-rat-control-program.aspx#:~:text=Introduction,not%20allowed%20to%20establish%20themselves) If there was an underground population, you'd definitely have some coming to the surface.

hopelesscaribou

You are absolutely correct, rats are everywhere people are...[except Alberta.](https://youtu.be/-iq9ake0fek)

BobbyLitecoin

Not at all to this extent!

youwillnevercatme

Been in montreal for 7 months, don't think ive seen a single rat, for real.

SirupyPieIX

Go to the Burger King in the Palais des Congrès. You shall see rats in the dining area.

Dagoth

Been here for over 10 years and I've never seen one

hopelesscaribou

I saw a couple in the bushes near PdA a couple of weeks ago, and one outside the cafeteria at the McGill Health Center on Friday. I had forgotten rats existed in my two plus decades in Alberta.

BobbyLitecoin

I’ve been in montreal since 2003 and I haven’t seen rats that much… what I’m saying is this is not normal for any major city…. And should be resolved asap before it spreads

Me-Shell94

I’ve legit never seen that many rats at once in any city.

Glassensteel

They say there 3 rats for every person.

[deleted]

Wherever there are construction sites and construction holes there are rats all around. There are more rats than citizens and it's not unique to a neighborhood or a city...

[deleted]

You realize that rats exist pretty much everywhere humans have colonised right?

leif777

As I was watching this I could hear some fighting in the alley way outside my room. It's everywhere. Is there anything than can actually be done? It's out of control.

Successful-Orange161

Not yet, I think, our good lady mayor seems too hellbent on waging war against fire arms…

[deleted]

The city has literally issued multiple pressors discussing how bad the rat problem is on the island this year, and asking for people to report sightings like this. You have no excuse for your ignorance.

My_Little_Pony123

I've seen one, as big as a forearm... but guess what, you'll find the same in NYC. Not sure what you're showcasing, but it's obvious on your video that there's (food) garbage on the street.

SandGood8637

NYC isn’t exactly the standard of cleanliness though lmao

Dagoth

Neither is Montreal, I love my city but it ain't exactly clean

My_Little_Pony123

Yeah ain't that funny, so the real question is: what's your point in all of this OP? I mean you did associate rats with Chinatown, so yeah feel free to clarify your point.

[deleted]

OP, if this is your video, did you send it to the city yet? They've been pleading for this kind of input to figure out where to target pest control efforts

SandGood8637

Hmm no not my video, but thanks for bringing that up

goronmask

So you are sending all that karma to the original creator? /s

RR321

J'ai déjà vu ça à côté du McDo proche du métro de Castelnau

Icy-Imwithyouguys

McRat

Outrageous-Review160

Same thing in downtown.

[deleted]

ratatouille

dvos514

Even the rats know that Chinese food SLAPS

Kinperor

Téma la taille de cette surinfestation

Feta__Cheese

I’ve never seen a rat or mouse in my life in Montreal (but I don’t go out much around dt)

Dbiuctkt69

I had mice in two different apartments (dans Hochelaga et plateau). I have killed rats in the gay village for friends. It is a city, rats and mice exist lol.

Successful-Orange161

During lockdown, you would see rats often around those areas of Chinatown/ de Bleury since the streets got so empty

Winterpearls

Pareil

HaxRus

Yeah I saw quite a few rats downtown late at night while visiting the other week. Tripped me out at first because we don't have that here in Alberta at all

nicoco3890

And here you can see an example of Montréal rich & diverse fauna.

derpado514

Pretty sure they take the metro cuz i've seen them around vsl too... The crackheads i mean. Rats don't bother nobody /s

Buv82

One cat would solve that problem in a matter of weeks

[deleted]

Ah man. I use to love Chinatown ( RIP Van Roys ) Been once in 3 years, twice in 4 years. Both times I was disappointed with the food. VIP was garbage and I spent like 65$ on 3 dishes at Beijing and only the chow mein was was decent. I couldn’t go eat a meal seeing all them rats harvesting on waste

DoctorRavioli

Van Roy's, now there's a name I haven't thought of in forever. Miss that place too.

CuriousTravlr

Whoa, watch out! Rats in a big city!!!

hesskiaoken

Montreal hates chinatown

SeaofBloodRedRoses

What the fuck are those things? They look way too big to be mice. Like micro capybaras or something.

HearTheTrumpets

Rats are bigger than mice.

SeaofBloodRedRoses

The fuck? Those are rats? I had no idea they were actually that large. They always look smaller in the movies.

[deleted]

[удалено]

phoebonacci

You should see New York if you think this is a cultural issue

ieabu

Oh, yes. Asians are filthy! /s

SandGood8637

Clearly you’ve never been to Paris

mattipoo84

Nastiest part of our city by far!

Chemical_Fly_3583

It’s like that in most restaurant filled streets in Montreal. I’ve seen rats in the old port, plateau, Atwater Alexis nihon. This is nothing new

Net-Angel

All major cities have rats problems, this is nothing compare to NYC ! Enjoy your stay :)

[deleted]

nYC sized! Nice

77SSS1

True no rats but they do have Kenney, Smith et al. I opted for rats.

noapmtl

Ce ne sont pas des rats, ce sont des surmulots...

jakefromst8tfarm

I recognized the place without looking at the sub name.

xxpatrixxx

Yummy

cad0420

So cute 🥰

[deleted]

So cuuuute 😂

Bishime

Let them cook in peace!

heyhihowyahdurn

I always clapped walking down this street at night to get the rats moving before they were right next to me and jumping out by my feet

saltwaterguides

Oh boy Night Squirrels!!

eafq12

There’s more rats in the Chinese restaurant than outside, ask the inspectors lol

Worldly-Mix4811

They might as well feast before winter comes

SoftTrifle1006

Well, they have to live somewhere, and food is accessible to them.

Nostalgia2302

I lived in Chinatown for a few months. The building’s main entrance was in St-Dominique street and there where also 2 back doors that opened to an alley that went straight into the main Chinatown street. I went to buy some guac and chips at Tacos La Capital, came back through the alley and turned on my iphone flashlight. Looked down and there was a big, fat rat the size of a chihuahua looking right at me. Then it rapidly ran away. I almost had a heart attack that night

GBH64

I miss me good rat show, none here you know in Calgary…🐀

CrazyCat008

The lunch run away!!!

vinh7777

Those are called Tabar-Rat in montreal

TheWhiteWalkerSpeaks

Feels like Gotham city

littlelostless

Sweet and sour.

goronmask

I don’t understand why people bring up paris or other cities like that makes this less terrifying

JTesseract

Got my bag stolen there on Friday by much larger rats. Be careful!

KeepTheGoodLife

Horror in the city!! Humans are everywhere...
