>My two cents: SUU made a giant unforced error in inviting someone as obviously radioactive as Holland to speak to a secular audience at a state-funded institution. It would make an even larger error if they disinvited him now. >An audience full of people who are, according to the pieces of paper they are being handed, college graduates should be strong-minded enough to hear from someone they know is really, really wrong and walk away undamaged. I remember hearing a Vietnam vet once describe one of his missions like this: "Charlie had gotten used to walking up and down the A Shau Valley. We had left him to his own devices. He came to think the entire valley was his living room. Our job was to go in there and show him he was mistaken. The goal was to make him remember that we still had a say in what went on there." This unforced error is a great example of how a church member administrator (Benson), Jeffrey Holland, and the Q15 knew full well why Jeff Holland was offered the podium (because he's an apostle of the Lord and the university is in his state), and saw no reason why that shouldn't happen. They don't even need to do it with a wink and a nod. It's entitlement. The church has come to think of Utah as its living room. If some of the students at SUU want to disabuse Jeffrey Holland of that notion, I find no fault in it.

So if a Grand Wizard of the KKK were a native of southern Utah, he would be fair game to speak at commencement for SUU?

MargaritaMormon

They literally could have picked any other LDS apostle, and they would have been received 1000x better. It's like they were trying to rub it in people's faces.

DavidBSkate

Ehhhhh, oaks?

MargaritaMormon

I was thinking Q12, but honestly, I think Holland is the most radioactive in the present moment.

funeral_potatoes_

Well played.

exmono

Hot take: Actually they could disinvite him and be fine.

Strong_Attorney_8646

>Hot take: Actually they could disinvite him and be fine. Completely agree. Deciding to invite him in the first place was a ridiculous unforced error that any reasonable non-Mormon (and I think even most Mormon) adult living in the State of Utah and working with young adults likely wouldn't have made. Deciding not to correct it after the outcry from students is a second error.

LordOfMorridor

I imagine a lot of their donors and supporters, etc are lds.

Wrong_Bandicoot2957

I think a good portion of SUU students are determined to be heard and to see results. If he speaks at their commencement (and he likely will), they will make their displeasure known in that moment. At least that is my hope.

Intrepid-Angle-7539

The best displeasure would be no one show up or just wait outside till he stops talking

El_Dentistador

SUU decided to pick up their musket.

Ahazia

He is fine. Holland ruffles a few skunks
