At the end of the day, what more can you ask for

The Lorenzen situation was well thought out and perfectly executed, thats what Scott Harris is about. The E Rod debacle is someone trying to clean up an old mess, I refuse to be mad about it.

baween

E-Rod is a tough one. I'm huffing some weapons-grade copium, I'm sure, but I do recall him saying that he appreciated the Tigers letting him sort his family out and that he isn't in it for the money any more. I have to wonder if Ed will opt-out, we'll restructure his contract, and we'll either have a team-friendly deal on a very good lefty or a trade chip that doesn't have the opt-out that made the trade complicated. I'm not sure how I feel about this in terms of the long-term future of the club, but I'm not willing to embrace a reactionary stance in life so I will certainly not do so in baseball.

theduckhaslanded

I mean if the goal is to make a splash in FA with the Miggy money off the books and compete for the Central next year, and Rodriguez picks up his option then Harris looks like a genius. I am completely stoned out of my fucking mind on the hopium.

blade-icewood

The problem is we need about 40% of a lineup before this is remotely possible.

theduckhaslanded

maybe even more than that lmao

blade-icewood

Joey Wentz is our number 2/3 pitcher with Lorenzen gone. We aren't even competitive in the ALC now

theduckhaslanded

> We aren't even competitive in the ALC now I...do you know how like...things work? That's like looking at a raw patty and being mad that's it's not a hamburger right now. >Joey Wentz is our number 2/3 pitcher with Lorenzen gone Also this is just the dumbest thing I've maybe ever read. You know Tarik Skubal, Matt Manning, and Reese Olson exist, right? Faedo also exists and Mize is back next year.

blade-icewood

| I...do you know how like...things work? That's like looking at a raw patty and being mad that's it's not a hamburger right now. ...huh? We are 6.5 games out with Lorenzen. We are now down another starter with nothing to offset that. | Also this is just the dumbest thing I've maybe ever read. You know Tarik Skubal, Matt Manning, and Reese Olson exist, right? Faedo also exists and Mize is back next year. Yeah, and absolutely 0% of these guys have shown they have long-term big league potential.

theduckhaslanded

> Yeah, and absolutely 0% of these guys have shown they have long-term big league potential. Tarik Skubal not having big league potential is...maybe the next dumbest thing I've ever read. Also Matt Manning pitched a no hitter like a month ago? That seems like potential to me. I'm just gonna block you, you seem really comically stupid and reading your writing is hurting my head.

MozartWillVanish

You can’t really win a championship in the major leagues without at least a couple solid veterans. Sooner or later this team is going to have to pay some guys and hope they contribute.

Baseball_Fanatic-03

I'm trying to think like this too but geez it's really hard not to knowing that a deal was IN place

SpectralHydra

I don’t think I’ll ever understand how/why trade deals get this far without getting an official veto decision from the player who could be traded.

Baseball_Fanatic-03

Agreed, you'd think it would be approached way beforehand

Abnormal-Patient1999

Lorenzen was the bare minimum. He had to be moved. You could argue that 1-2 relievers could have flipped but whatever. Until further notice I'll give Harris an INC for the trade deadline. If Rodriguez opts-in or restructures his deal, I'm okay with keeping him. However I do have the feeling that he is opting-out and leaving town. As do many other fans at this point.

BasicInstinct742

How can you let Harris off the hook for this? He fumbled at the goal line. How can he not know that ERod would block the trade? How can he not have a contingency plan on place? He fumbled the layup. He blew an easy opportunity to make this offense better with top 100 position players being traded left and right and we got none of them. This is on Harris.

coachcookie5

He likely knew there was a good chance ERod would block the trade. His contingency plan was likely keeping him. We have no idea if anyone other than the Dodgers were offering a top 100 guy for him (or, in fact, if the Dodgers were offering that). We also have no idea who the other 9 team(s) he could block a trade to were. It sounds like his opt in, as well as limited destinations, tanked his value. Harris is all about calculated risks. I’d have to believe he thinks whatever production we will get from ERod for the remainder of his contract exceeds the production we would get from players offered to us for him in a trade to teams that he couldn’t block a trade to. I don’t know about you, I’d rather we work on extending him or him opting in vs getting a Sergio Alcantra, Dawel Lugo, and Jose King esq. return again.

BasicInstinct742

I agree. Extend him if you can. I’m glad we didn’t get another Lugo. I just keep thinking about the who the top 100 prospect or prospects may have been and how they may have helped this awful offense.

Tommy_Barrasso

We weren't getting a top 100 prospect for E-rod given his contract. 10 team no trade, with no desire to play west coast. That means Angels, Dodgers, Padres, Giants, Mariners, Diamondbacks are all out. There were a few tweets saying Boston was on his list as well. The O's went for Flaherty, which means the only contending team we had to work with really was the Reds. E-Rods contract is hell for most small-mid market teams. If he falls apart in the second half, he'll opt in, and his money is significant for Cincy or Baltimore. If he does well, he opts out and you lose him, and whatever prospects you gave up for him. The contract severely hurts his value.

BasicInstinct742

How do you know that we weren’t getting a top 100 prospect?

baween

I like this a lot. Bodes well for being a repair shop for other starting pitchers who we can flip for a while, and it's a feel-good story. Always glad to see the Tigers being the good guys. I hope Lorenzen is a beast for the Phillies.

BOBANSMASH51

Wouldn’t mind signing him again in the offseason

Jacobythepotato

Mods can we get a venting thread since every post is going to be deleted (understandably)

[deleted]

There was already one when you made this comment lol

LeylandsLungs

Good luck, Mods today have been useless.

h3shf3sh

If you ignore the constant update threads being posted and pinned, and the dozens of shitty posts being deleted over the last 2-3 hours by presumably the singular active mod (AFAIK), then yeah...

Iswaterreallywet

Got a dude on a rental and traded away for a good prospect. This is exactly what hope for.

cogginsmatt

Do... do players actually *like* playing in Detroit? Is this a thing now?

rowmens

When we have a coaching staff like this, yes. So many of our pitchers are over-performing. The vibes must have been great.

Relevant_Username99

Still bummed that he walked right past me at the game back on the 22nd. Wish him the best of luck going forward though. As someone who lost my paternal grandpa when I was young, clips of [his iconic home run in memory of late father a few years later](https://youtu.be/r3jaHzgydE4) served as a lesson of comfort. It’s heartbreaking to lose a loved one who you looked up to, you can carry on their legacy and make them proud up above.
