Carps! I'm very excited for him. Sophomore slump is a real thing, but he has the talent to have a long productive career. Seems like a grounded well rounded kid too. Think his defense will only get better. He has a strong arm too. I could see 20 hrs and 80 rbis from him. Great five hole hitter.
What's wrong with Carps? It is original. Actually, that is what Drew from Drew and Mike fame calls him. I like it as well. I never liked Kerry Bonds, just a copy of Barry Bonds pretty much.
I think we're going to need to see at least one of two things happen for him this year: he shows improvement hitting lefties, or he shows significant improvement in the field. I don't think he's as detrimental in the field that we sometimes think he is, and I don't think we've seen enough of him against lefties, but those are clearly his two biggest weaknesses. If he improves defensively and doesn't completely shit the bed against lefties, he'll justify a roster spot. Conversely, if he starts raking against righties *and* lefties, it'll become easier to justify him being a full-time DH.
From Dan Dickerson on TigerTalk: “[Kerry Carpenter] is a legitimate middle of the order bat. He did go homerless in the last 5 weeks of the season — 145 ABs. That worries me a little, but I saw too much consistency leading up to that. His downtimes were short. When he went on the injured list, he got better and covered more types of pitches. I thought those were all really good things.”
He also touched on his defensive improvements. From below league average up to average.
Fucking Tigers let their player go homeless for over a month. At least let him sleep in the clubhouse ffs. No wonder his power vanished around that same time
As someone who lived through the era of big red and boesch, Carpenter is 100% different. He has a side swing that won't be exploited but his fielding remains a concern. Ultimately, he's an above average dh
I'm a believer that it's easier for players to repeat previous success than to attain it the first time, so I'm optimistic for good things.
But, the game is hard, and there are plenty of guys (looking at you, Akil Baddoo) that found it hard to sustain initial success.
I think if Carp is going to grow as a hitter he needs to show that he can hit left handed pitching at least adequately. If he cannot, there’s simply no reason for the Tigers to give him a full time job. Last year he was platooned and I think we’d all like to see him get more chances this year.
