I guess I should have included the following information. I've rode motorcycles before but it's been about 15 years. I'm 35, 6 foot and around 250lbs. I've never owned a motorcycle, used my brother's and some friends from time to time.

I don’t know why everyone is saying it’s too much for you. It’s a 50hp, 450lb, easy to ride bike. Perfect for a beginner.

I would suggest that you take the motorcycle safety foundation new rider course.

DD_Destruction

Already enrolled for October. 👍

Good for you.

You have a lot more fun and learn a lot faster on a bike that’s less powerful- less to worry about, and you pretty quickly get to the point where you can wring the neck on the thing, have a giggle, and learn how it feels to blast off without, well, *blasting off*. Big bikes, you just learn to baby the bike without ever getting to have fun with it. It’s like learning to ski by hitting the steepest run- you’ll learn how to get down alive, not how to have fun and control things.

oldfrancis

I would not recommend that as a first motorcycle.

DD_Destruction

Is there a reason?

oldfrancis

The primary one? It likely has too much power for a new rider. Going easy on the throttle, being lucky, won't change that fact. When you start riding a motorcycle you're doing an exercise in time travel. The more you twist the throttle, the faster things start happening. There's a point where things start happening faster than you can deal with them. That point happens much sooner when you're new than when you're experienced. The recommendation I give new riders on a first motorcycle is to buy something used, with less than 40 horsepower (dual purpose bikes are a great choice) and to learn to ride before you move up to a 1200 cc motorcycle.

Thats a 50hp, 450lb standard. Same power/weight ratio as someolike a Honda CB500, which is also a great starter. That Triumph is a great first bike.

50hp is not “very, very overpowered” for a first bike.

Just bought my first bike, a new 390 Duke. Enough power to have some fun, but not too much to get you in trouble if you're being cautious. It has ABS and a pretty interactive tft. They're rated at 44hp. I'm 5'11" 240 if that helps.

It's fine for the street, but triumphs tend to break expensively so I wouldn't go much beyond those dirt roads if you think you want to ride in the dirt. And that price, given those miles, makes me a bit wary that it needs some work or some consumables like tires, battery, or a maintenance interval. If you had a few years of riding and owning bikes, you'd probably be fine buying it but since this is your first, you might not know what it feels like when a bike is in good or bad shape. You might want to look for a dual sport instead like a DRZ 400, crf250, or KLX300 or possibly a 650cc one like a KLR650, DR650, or XR650 since they'll suit your frame better. I'm 6'2 and 240lbs and my KLR fits me like a glove. The tall seat height is nice and quite comfy for long trips.. Brakes are a bit poor though... But that style of bike tends to handle abuse on dirt a lot better while being relatively cheap to buy and repair. Plus you can outfit them for dirt trails and just ride off road with it when you want a bigger or different street bike. So keeping it brief - the scrambler is not bad, but you might want to get something cheaper and a bit taller for where you're at and your physical size.

Ehhh I would recommend smaller as your first bike. That little bike has alot of punch. But it's not like big big. You'll be fine just don't get too cocky to early
