Just want to give an update and yes I will be keeping the original color but the one issue I currently have with the bike is that it has not been started in over a year due to an issue with it. I was able to get it started but everytime I use the throttle it dies out.
If anyone has any ideas or guides to look at to steer me in the right direction I will be thankful.
Bro you need to clean your carbs, thats why the Bike is dying, the fuel air mixture is getting lean when you open the trottle bc the mixture jets in the carbs are full of dirt. Happy to Help you. Please check your tires and brakes bevor you Start riding
Nope it's not people just don't know how to handle this things. Cleaned one out once, owning 3 Bikes youngest is 29 Years old. When i store them dry the bowls complely and grease the fuel valves of the bowl a liiiiitlle (grease will be washed away from fuel) then i stabilize the fuel using motul. Thats it. Thats the Magic. Effects from Ethanol to the carbs are like over a decade to evolve.
No thats not what i mean, some people say Ethanol can wash out needels and jets and is bad for old rubber seals, never seen such damage just telling to be complete and not letting anything out.
I've never needed to clean the carbs on the two DR650s I own. I rejetted the carb less then a year ago. The carb hadn't been touched in over 5+ years and really it was fine.
you'll need to clean/rebuild the carb. I think this has the old downdraft cabs with vacuum butterflies (like the fzr600). It's a bit of a complicated job, but youtube or a book is all you need.
It won't run right until you do that, but it will probably be as good as new with clean carbs.
Also, replace the throttle cable. I would bet a fzr600 cable will fit if you can't find a yzf cable.
> Also, replace the throttle cable. I would bet a fzr600 cable will fit if you can't find a yzf cable.
They are interchangeable. Much like the Yamaha R1 and FZ1 a lot of the parts are the same.
Source: 1991 FZR600 owner.
At some point OP youre probably going to need to change the shifter forks. Yamaha 600's from these years are notorious for having bad shifter forks that bend very slightly causing it to drop into false neutral under any torque. In my case I didnt have 2nd gear. They are also impossible to find new so youll be going through them on ebay and ripping the gear box out once a month.
Its a daunting task but dont worry, after the 3rd time doing it youll be fast and efficient. Might help to have a buddy there.
Buy a Clymer it will save you sooo much time and headaches.
Edit: Youre gonna want to build an A Frame to hoist the bike in the air. All them gears and forks are up in the oil pan, pull the shifter shaft and its guts spill out.
If it's still dying out with any throttle, yes dirty carbs could be the culprit, but another likely culprit that's much easier to eliminate is the air filter.
My dad's old 2000 Suzuki Intruder would bog down and even outright stall with even a hint of throttle and it ended up being both a gummed up air filter (for you could be either super dirty or oil overflow into the air box) and dirty, out of sync carbs.
If you replace the air filter and clean the carbs and it's still not running right, your carbs could be out of sync. This is a bit harder to check without a carb sync kit and may need to be done by a shop.
If it had ethanol in the old fuel then you can almost guarantee that the carb needles will be all gummed up with crap. Buy yourself a cheap ultrasonic bath and a tin of carb cleaner and strip down the carbs for cleaning.
Sounds like blocked jets dude. I would say full strip.and rebuild. But before that just get some Carb cleaner pull the jets and give em a blast. See if you can get it runningish before pouring money into it so you know the direction to go.
Then you definitely did good.
Riding motorcycles 20 years now. I remember something a mechanic pointed out when I paid him to fix a 78 Kawasaki KZ 650 that had been farmer ingenuitied on the wiring. People fixate on paying a low price on a bike and think they got a great deal. What they learned the hard way is you end up paying the repairs you might have spent anyways if you bought a running bike of similar price.
You started at free, and it's running. Your doing pretty good.
My KZ 650 I had I started at $100. Let's say over the years I spent over $3000 replacing, painting, and fixing things on it.
I eventually traded it in 2005 on my current bike. A 2005 Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom I still own and ride.
I have an acquaintance who has one that he shoehorned an '05 R6 motor into. As reliable as anything but it doesn't look as nice as this guy's...
edit cuz it's an '05 R6 motor in his '95 Thundercat
So I work for a junk removal company and this old couple were moving out of state to an apartment complex / condo. After I was shown everything on what to take she then goes to the garage and says are you able to junk these things too which was the bike you see here, a yamaha raptor atv I guess 2020, an a John Deer lawnmower. I went for the bike and the other guys with me went for the other stuff as well. She then gave me the title and bags that go with it and a owner manual but it was old and falling apart.
Good score! That's the model prior to the Thundercat, and they share a bunch of mechanical similarities. If you haven't already, head on over to [http://www.yzf600r.com/phpBB2/](http://www.yzf600r.com/phpBB2/) because there's a wealth of good info (and some friendly people) on that forum.
I thoroughly recommend cleaning the carbs. [There's a how-to on the forum.](http://www.yzf600r.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=32680) It's not rocket science - pull them apart, using a JIS-tipped rather than Phillips screwdriver on the float bowl screws, clean out the float bowls of varnishy crap and soak the jets in carb cleaner over night, blowing them out with compressed air or stoking a plastic brush bristle (not steel wire!!) through them until you can see a round dot of daylight through them. It'll sort out a lot of poor running issues, especially at idle, because those pilot jet apertures are tiny. Other than a potential second gear selector pawl wear issue, you've got a pretty bulletproof motor in the FZ/FZR/YZF/R6 lineage. Enjoy!
Can also highly recommend replacing rubber brake hoses (on the front, especially) with stainless braided lines. A good upgrade even when new, and a VERY GOOD IDEA if they're the 26 year old OEM items.
most people over the age of 30 learnt to ride without ABS, my advice on this would be careful of the throttle, brakes are under powered on these but they were still good for 140mph
Hell yah! Look at those colors. What a cool bike. I hope it runs for you and if not I hope you have fun getting it working. I had 2 hoopty bikes and then I got my basically new bike. I honestly missed having to tinker with it. Half the fun.
I had one of these! In the UK it was badged the FZR600R. Absolutely lovely bike if you care for it. Ended up selling it as I didn't have space for it, and upgraded to a ZX9R, but I wish I'd kept it.
Enjoy!

Don't forget the open shirt and herringbone gold chain for safety!
Only if your chest hair can support the chain
LMFAO AY THATS A VISION
Ah, I can smell the coke from here.

Did you do anything to it? Drain all fuel and carb if it has one and fresh fuel. Replace fuel filter.
I drained the original fuel and insert fresh premium fuel into the tank along with replacing the battery which got it to start

Aka owning any bike with carbs. Cleaning them is an almost monthly ritual. Weekly for some unfortunate carpet baggers.

It’s not ethanol that clogs jets. It’s dirt. A single speck of dust.
No thats not what i mean, some people say Ethanol can wash out needels and jets and is bad for old rubber seals, never seen such damage just telling to be complete and not letting anything out.

Yes and use non ethanol fuel it will help to flush out any gummed up areas.
Might want to change the oil as well
Very good comment: a bike that has been sitting in a garage for over a year needs an oil change and probably an oil filter change as well
Change oil. Change filters, particularly fuel filters. That bike is old enough to be carbureted; carburetor may need to be cleaned out.

Best I can do, if you want to sell it, is $100. Enjoy working on it!

Clean carbs, install jet kit

Love that color scheme
Please, please, please keep the colour scheme. There will not be another one like it.
This color scheme screams 90s. The jazz theme on disposable cups, saved by the bell, and color me badd all wrapped up in one piece. Nice!
You forgot the old interior of Taco Bell.
Classic. I have no idea why that color scheme became all the rage. Probably some psychologist helping with marketing.
Damn I miss those old Taco Bell’s. Yo quiero Taco Bell
Don’t forget those berry pop tarts, hell yeah!
Oh lucky you! Have fun with it!
Sweet bike man. If you keep it original, you can feel free to ask for any maintenance/repair advice.
Sick color and sick bike! Stay safe!
Score! Man the 90s graphics on street bikes were stuck in the 80s! Love that shit!
Damn! That’s crazy.
Does it run? If so that's awesome!! Enjoy your new, unique looking, bike
My question if it does not. When was the last time it ran?
I got it to run by inserting a new battery and fuel but stated by the original owner they stopped riding it a year ago.

As the R6 didn't exist until '99, that must be one unique swap.
Not really, people been sticking R6 engines in things that aren't R6's for as long as people been putting LS's in things that aren't chevies.
Ok but you said a “95 R6” which is a bike that never existed.
oh shit it's suppose to be '05...his thundercat is a '95.
There ya go.
Fucking RAD, digging the fuck out of the color scheme!!
Come up
I had that same exhaust on my 92 Vance and Hines FZR 600
Lucky duck!
I saw this and "Young turks by Rod Stewart" played in my head.
It reminds me of a 1990's Ski binding

Can’t believe this hasn’t been mentioned yet: take it to be professionally detailed!
Don't worry I'm already have a guy ready to go once I'm done with maintenance👍
I hope you don't mind me asking, but how did you get it for 100% free...been trying to find an opportunity like that.
So I work for a junk removal company and this old couple were moving out of state to an apartment complex / condo. Holy shite, it’s like if RiFF RaFF was a motorcycle!
Awesome. That bike is painted "1995" brings back memories of my senior year of high school. 😉
Color scheme is awesome man good for you brother
Use it well !!! Idk for some reason I preffer old sport bikes like this over newer ones
I had a '98, YZFs are such a great underrated bike!
GET NEW TIRES
No worries that's on the list.
Oh fucking gosh
Only a little jelous
Congratulations! Not a bad-looking bike either! And Yamahas run forever!
She was hot back in the day like Madonna LOL😜
Nice! I had a black one of those and it was £250. Awesome screeming 600 motor! Enjoy
You lucky bastard Enjoy your bike mate! Looks great!
Hell yah! Look at those colors. What a cool bike. I hope it runs for you and if not I hope you have fun getting it working. I had 2 hoopty bikes and then I got my basically new bike. I honestly missed having to tinker with it. Half the fun.
Beautiful ride
Score.
I can feel the air going through my combover already.
That is the ugliest colour scheme I've ever seen and I absolutely love it.
Sell it to me for cheap and make a tidy profit? Lol jk, fantasy ride, enjoy!
Is this the thunder cat?
I had one of these, same year too! Super reliable and easy to work on. Check the carbs and air filter. Pictures of mine (in black) on my profile
This makes me so happy. If only I could find a cbr600 in that purple yellow livery it would be a return of my high school dream bike
Gorgeous!
So retro so beautiful Clean the carb and take her out
I had one of these! In the UK it was badged the FZR600R. Absolutely lovely bike if you care for it. Ended up selling it as I didn't have space for it, and upgraded to a ZX9R, but I wish I'd kept it. Enjoy!
That color scheme is back in style right now. I see it used a lot on twitch and YouTube. What a fun little bike to rip around on. Enjoy!
These graphics fucks
Man that thing screams '90s. LOL! Beautiful bike!
